Effect of hydration on the morphology of enzyme powder   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
We report the first direct images of the hydration of protein powders. Using an environmental scanning electron microscope (ESEM) we have taken a series of micrographs of a region of the enzyme (subtilisin) power whilst hydrating the sample. In addition, the sample has been viewed during exposure to toluene vapors. The ESEM is a remarkable new instrument that will have wide applicability in imaging of biological materials in their native environments.  相似文献

The utilization of gene technology and of new production technologies have made industrial enzymes with improved properties or better cost performance available. This has in turn opened important new areas of enzyme applications. The benefits to the customers are considerable: cost savings in the application process, improved product quality, and in most cases also a significantly reduced impact on the environment.

Gene technology offers several benefits to the enzyme industry. This technology enables the use of safe, well-documented host organisms easy to cultivate, the microbial production of enzymes of animal and plant origin, the realization of enhanced efficiency and high product purity, and also the production of enzymes with improved stability and activity.

Developments in production technology include advanced control methods, the use of expert systems, and the application of large-scale crystallization.

As case stories the development of a lipase and of a cellulase is described. The effect on environment of enzyme application and production is discussed.  相似文献

The North Sea, one of the most productive of the earth's seas and oceans, is also surrounded by some of earth's most densely populated and heavily industrialized regions. A growing number of signals are being received which indicate that this valuable ecosystem is increasingly under stress. This has generated a corresponding increase in concern over the steps to be taken to protect the North Sea. While there are divergent views on what constitutes an ‘ideal’ North Sea, there is a general recognition that any decisions that are made should be based on a good understanding of this ecosystem. The intention of this paper is to give an overview of what is presently known, and to identify areas where more studies are needed. A brief summary of the hydrography and the biota of the North Sea is given. Biotic and abiotic structure justify partitioning the North Sea into three ecologically different regions: southern, central, and northern. For the most part, neither the top predators,e.g. marine birds and mammals, nor the macroalgae and sea grasses are included in this overview.  相似文献

A fall population of the blackmargined aphid, Monellia caryella (Fitch) (Homoptera: Aphididae), was monitored daily for mortality caused by fungi and parasitoids. Three species of Entomophthorales fungi were found. Fungal-induced mortality was found to be correlated with minimum temperature. During the period when the minimum temperature was consistently above 8°C, fungal-induced mortality was positively correlated with the sum of hours of leaf-wetness on days 5, 6, and 7 before sampling. Parasitoid wasps killed fewer hosts than fungi and were not affected by environmental factors.
Résumé La mortalité quotidienne provoquée par des parasitoïdes et des champignons sur une population automnale de M. caryella Fitch (Homopt. Aphididae) a été suivie à Byron (Géorgie, USA), avec enregistrement de la température, de la pluie et de l'humidité des feuilles. 3 espèces de champignons entomophthorales ont été trouvées: Neozygites sp., Entomophthora planchoniana et Erynia sp. 54% des pucerons morts étaient contaminés par Neozygites et 46% par E. planchoniana. Seuls 2 pucerons avaient été tués par Erynia sp. Les taux de mortalité quotidienne par champignons s'élevaient après les périodes pluvieuses et d'humidité des feuilles. La mortalité due au parasitisme était inférieure à la mortalité due aux champignons et ne semblait pas liée aux conditions écologiques. La discussion porte sur l'importance de la mortalité provoquée par les champignons sur la dynamique de la population de pucerons.

Asexual reproduction is employed by species of Naididae during favorable environmental conditions. In species characteristic of aquatic habitats subject to rapid fluctuations in water levels and temperatures most individuals in a population become sexually mature, and there is degeneration of the alimentary tract, a shortened breeding season, and aclitellar formation of cocoons. Cocoon deposition allows a population to survive periods of environmental stress. Sexual reproduction predominates near the edges of ranges where stress conditions are more prevalent. Species that reproduce sexually in spring are intolerant of summer conditions, while those that breed in autumn are intolerant of winter. Species typical of environmentally stable bodies of water usually have a minority of the population mature at any time, an extended breeding season, and the ability to continue feeding while mature; thus, adaptations for survival in unstable habitats are lacking.  相似文献

The segregation of isozymes of peroxidase and acid phosphatase in progenies of crosses between large (L) and small (S and L6) flax genotrophs has been determined. The peroxidase isozymes segregated as expected on a simple Mendelian model with a dominant and a recessive allele and with the L genotroph being a homozygous dominant. All the peroxidase isozymes which differed segregated together, so the isozymes are controlled by either a single locus or closely linked loci. The acid phosphatase isozymes in the F1 were all L type, but the segregations observed in the F2 were not always consistent with a simple Mendelian model.  相似文献

The history and nature of the new environmental movement in the United States are reviewed. Since understanding of a social movement is enhanced by learning the views and perceptions of outsiders, the continuing debate between the environmental movement and its critics is examined. First, disagreements over the nature and the severity of the so-called environmental crisis are described. Second, the ideological differences between environmentalists and their critics are reviewed, particularly their contrasting views of man, society, nature, and economic growth. Finally, the political critique of the movement is examined, with attention given to the composition of the membership, the alleged superficiality of its proposed solutions to environmental problems, and the alleged discrimination against both poor people in the United States and the poor nations.  相似文献

An attempt is made to argue for a more dynamic view of huntergatherer population behavior in place of the largely static one that has been widely accepted. Following a review of how the concept of carrying capacity has been used in both huntergatherer and ecological studies, attention is drawn to the role of stochastic factors in producing fluctuations over time among populations that are small in size.
