Despite the widespread application of periphytic diatoms to water quality assessment at a regional level, there is no standard
European sampling protocol or associated assessment metrics. Furthermore, relatively little is known about the uncertainty
in the results of such assessments. One of the objectives of the European project for the Standardisation of River Classifications
(STAR) is to improve and standardise diatom assessment methods. An extensive diatom ring test, together with an audit of the
project results, provided a better understanding and quantification of the uncertainty in quality assessment of running waters
using diatoms. The variation in multimetric analysis shows that the choice of site and substrate for sampling, the inter-operator
differences in diatom taxonomy and the counting techniques are the primary sources of uncertainty. To some extent, this variation
also reveals the robustness of specific metrics in relation to the sources of uncertainty. Of the three most common substrate
types tested (stone, macrophyte and sediment), macrophytes emerge as the most preferred substrate for diatom sampling when

We examined vertical migration and colonisation patterns of stream macroinvertebrates within the substratum of an Apennine
creek in NW Italy. Macrobenthos was sampled at three depths in the streambed (0–5, 5–10, 10–15 cm) by means of artificial
baskets filled with natural substratum. We placed 42 traps (5×5×15 cm), i.e. 21 top-opened (T-traps) and 21 bottom-opened
(B-traps), each composed of three overlapping baskets (high-H, medium-M and low-L), to evaluate differences in the vertical
movements. We also collected Surber samples to compare interstitial assemblages with streambed communities. The multilevel
traps yielded 42 taxa, compared with 60 taxa in the natural riverbed. Interstitial traps were rapidly colonised; both taxa
richness and organism number increased during the 42-day study period. We found active migration in both vertical directions,
but there were more invertebrates in the top-opened traps than in the bottom-opened traps. In the T-traps the most colonised
baskets were those placed at the H level, while in the B-traps the L level baskets were more rapidly colonised. The interstitial
assemblages differed markedly from the streambed communities in both composition and functional organisation, with more collector-gatherers
and predators in the interstitial zone and more filterers and scrapers in the natural riverbed. In Apennine lotic systems,
the interstitial zone is an important habitat for stream macrobenthos, although it may not be used by all species. 相似文献

Previous studies on recovery in hyporheic communities have found that communities rapidly return to pre-disturbance levels.
However, most of these studies have concentrated on small floods or ones with short return periods. I studied the impact of
a large 1 in 6 year flood on the hyporheic community at 2 sites in the Hunter River, a large coastal river in New South Wales
with a mean daily flow of 15 m3 s−1. The flood peaked at 1270 m3 s−1 and afterwards invertebrate densities at the 2 sites were 83 and 67% less than they were before. Recovery to pre-flood densities
was slow but was aided by increases in the oligochaete and cyclopoid populations. At Site 1, there was a boom in oligochaete
and cyclopoid numbers 61 d after the flood, but the communities resumed their pre-flood densities by Day 139. Recovery at
Site 2 took 139 d. Most groundwater taxa (stygobites) living in the hyporheic zone did not recover from the disturbance when
compared to non-stygobites. Apart from Microturbellaria and the harpacticoid Parastenocaris sp., numbers of all stygobite taxa continued to decline after the flood, becoming absent after 61 d. The poor recovery of
stygobites is probably due to their adaptations for survival in the relatively stable groundwater environment. This study
shows that hyporheic communities are sensitive to large bed-moving floods and supports the hypothesis that ecotonal species
with a strong affinity to one ecosystem can be poor at recovering from disturbances that occur in an adjacent ecosystem. 相似文献

Type-specific reference conditions that describe sites with no or only very minor anthropogenic disturbances are a basic requirement
of the European Water Framework Directive. The reference condition approach implies a previous determination of criteria acceptable
for the definition of near-natural stretches. In this paper, a methodology based on selection and validation procedures is
applied to a Portuguese watershed to guide the identification of reference sites. The methodology consisted of three phases:
(1) a preliminary site inspection through the use of maps, available data and an extensive screening field campaign that resulted
in the selection of 52 potentially undisturbed small- and medium-sized rivers stretches, ranging from 43 to 1069 m in altitude,
with catchment areas between 4 and 641 km2 and representing siliceous and calcareous riverbeds; (2) a detailed site selection based on ten pre-defined criteria involving
physical/social/biological attributes that indicated catchment land use changes and alien vegetal riparian species as major
human impacts; (3) a site validation procedure involving detailed investigation of benthic macroinvertebrate communities,
riparian vegetation, in-stream habitat quality and chemical parameters that showed riparian wood-related problems as a major
restriction to validate a stretch as a near-natural site. Only about 12% of all investigated river sites, accounting for 600 m
of all 5200 m studied, could be considered as near-reference stretches or sites retaining essential natural functions. Selection
and validation procedures can identify different sites as reference, which reinforces the need for applying both procedures.
The results presented can help to accomplish the requirements of the EU – Water Framework Directive by selecting reference
sites as the first step to establish biological reference conditions and, simultaneously, to form a basis for nature conservation
strategies.

Cultural transmission of ethnobotanical knowledge in a rural community of northwestern Patagonia, Argentina 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
In the present study we analyzed medicinal and edible plant utilization in Cuyin Manzano, a small rural population located
near the Andean forests of Argentina. We also studied where and when plant knowledge was learned, who the principal transmitters
were, and how people were taught. The participants were interviewed individually and at random, by means of a semi-structured
questionnaire. Interviews were carried out in 16 families in order to examine the present use of wild plants. The inhabitants
of Cuyin Manzano cited 87 plants: 63 medicinal and 24 edible species. They mentioned on average 31 ± 10 species per person.
Similar patterns of plant use were found in young and old people alike, irrespective of gender. Learning about useful plants
took place at an early age as a result of family tradition. This local knowledge is acquired and taught “by doing,” and is
mostly transmitted vertically through family dissemination. Wild plant learning implies the acquisition of plants' physical

Divergent selection on flowering time contributes to local adaptation in Mimulus guttatus populations 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The timing of when to initiate reproduction is an important transition in any organism's life cycle. There is much variation in flowering time among populations, but we do not know to what degree this variation contributes to local adaptation. Here we use a reciprocal transplant experiment to examine the presence of divergent natural selection for flowering time and local adaptation between two distinct populations of Mimulus guttatus. We plant both parents and hybrids (to tease apart differences in suites of associated parental traits) between these two populations into each of the two native environments and measure floral, vegetative, life-history, and fitness characters to assess which traits are under selection at each site. Analysis of fitness components indicates that each of these plant populations is locally adapted. We obtain striking evidence for divergent natural selection on date of first flower production at these two sites. Early flowering is favored at the montane site, which is inhabited by annual plants and characterized by dry soils in midsummer, whereas intermediate (though later) flowering dates are selectively favored at the temperate coastal site, which is inhabited by perennial plants and is almost continually moist. Divergent selection on flowering time contributes to local adaptation between these two populations of M. guttatus, suggesting that genetic differentiation in the timing of reproduction may also serve as a partial reproductive isolating barrier to gene flow among populations. 相似文献

Models of hybrid zone dynamics incorporate different patterns of hybrid fitness relative to parental species fitness. An important but understudied source of variation underlying these fitness differences is the environment. We investigated the performance of two willow species and their F1, F2, and backcross hybrids using a common-garden experiment with six replicated gardens that differed in soil moisture. Aboveground biomass, catkin production, seed production per catkin, and seed germination rate were significantly different among genetic classes. For aboveground biomass and catkin production, hybrids generally had intermediate or inferior performance compared to parent species. Salix eriocephala had the highest performance for all performance measures, but in two gardens F, plants had superior or equal performance for aboveground biomass and female catkin production. Salix eriocephala and backcrosses to S. eriocephala had the highest numbers of filled seeds per catkin and the highest estimates of total fitness in all gardens. Measures of filled seeds per catkin and germination rate tend to support the model of endogenous hybrid unfitness, and these two measures had major effects on estimates of total seed production per catkin. We also estimated how the two willow species differ genetically in these fitness measures using line cross analysis. We found a complex genetic architecture underlying the fitness differences between species that involved additive, dominance, and epistatic genetic effects for all fitness measures. The environment was important in the expression of these genetic differences, because the type of epistasis differed among the gardens for above-ground biomass and for female catkin production. These findings suggest that fine-scale environmental variation can have a significant impact on hybrid fitness in hybrid zones where parents and hybrids are widely interspersed. 相似文献

The hyporheic zone and its interactions with coarse surface sediments is increasingly reported by aquatic ecologists because the water exchanges between surface and subsurface are important factors for the understanding of the ecosystem functioning. However, the hyproheic oligochaete assemblages have received less attention than other assemblages such as crustaceans. In addition, studies investigating the incidence of pollution in watercourses have mostly focused on the benthic zone and have neglected the hyporheic zone. Some examples are given from an unpolluted glacial river (Roseg), polluted plains rivers (Moselle, Rhône) and a protected wetland in an urbanized environment. The hyporheic zone kept the memory of past and present incidences of pollution, in particular when downwellings of polluted surface waters to the hyporheic zone predominated. The Active hydrologic Exchange Describers between surface and subsurface (AED oligochaete species) were the same in the glacial river Roseg, the rivers Rhône and Moselle and the urbanized wetland. The predominance of pollution-tolerant species like Limnodrilus hoffmeisteri was observed in polluted groundwater as well as in polluted surface coarse sediments. Moreover, the urbanized wetland exhibited a high species richness, suggesting that the hyporheic zone is a reservoir of species. The oligochaete communities enable biologists to simultaneously assess the pollution incidence, the permeability of coarse habitats, the water exchanges between surface and subsurface, and give an approximate measure of the metabolic activities in the sediments. Consequently, the simultaneous study of surface and hyporheic oligochaete assemblages is of great interest when considering the ecological functioning of watercourses and the incidence of pollution inputs. 相似文献

Risk-based methods promise improved decision-making for managing of contaminants, such as salinity, sediments, nutrients, and toxicants, that can adversely affect the ecological condition of aquatic ecosystems. Two aspects of ecological risk assessment (ERA) and management—stakeholder involvement and more quantitative approaches to risk analysis—are particularly challenging. Stakeholder involvement is crucial both in the risk assessment process and the development, acceptance, and implementation of a risk management plan. Additionally, a number of quantitative approaches (particularly Bayesian approaches and multi-criteria decision-making) have been identified as having the potential to include expert-based inputs into risk-based decision-making. These offer promise for better inclusion of stakeholder knowledge and preferences into the decision-making process, and for improving the links between stakeholder inputs and potential risks to the ecological condition of the system. A major challenge for ecologists and natural resource managers is to make the ERA process more quantitative. Most ERAs conducted to date have been qualitative assessments that suffer from a number of deficiencies, the most serious being the lack of transparency and a reliance on subjective judgments. This article argues that the most productive way forward may be to use Bayesian methods to couple existing process-based models, empirical relationships based on good data, and expert opinion, to make the analysis of ecological risks more robust, consistent, and repeatable. 相似文献

Understanding how animals interact with their environment is critical for evaluating, mitigating and coping with anthropogenic alteration of Earth's biosphere. Researchers have attempted to understand some aspects of these interactions by examining patterns in animal body mass distributions. Energetic, phylogenetic, biogeographical, textural discontinuity and community interaction hypotheses have been advanced to explain observed patterns. Energetic and textural discontinuity hypotheses focus upon the allometry of resource use. The community interaction hypothesis contends that biotic interactions within assemblages of species are of primary importance. Biogeographical and phylogenetic hypotheses focus on the role of constraints on the organization of communities. This paper examines and organizes these various propositions about species body mass distributions and discusses the multiple competing hypotheses, how their predictions vary, and possible methods by which the hypotheses can be distinguished and tested. Each of the hypotheses is partial, and explains some elements of pattern in body mass distributions. The scale of appropriate application, relevance and interpretation varies among the hypotheses, and the mechanisms underlying observed patterns are likely to be multicausal and vary with scale. 相似文献
