We report morphology and microstructure of the stromatolites of the Ganjingzi Formation in southern Liaoning. Sedimentologic and morphologic analyses indicate that the lower stromatolite mounds formed in a transgressive succession, while the stromatolite columns in the more complex upper biostrome changed vertically from dispersed growth to dense clumping. Biostratigraphic analysis shows that the stromatolites in the Ganjingzi Formation are similar to those from coeval strata in the Xuzhou-Huainan Region and in southern Jilin. Comparisons of the morphotype genera of stromatolites and the sedimentary setting between different areas, imply that sea-level was fluctuating in the east of the North China Craton (NCC) during the Ganjingzi interval and that the transgressions were beneficial to stromatolite growth, as indicated by the increased number of stromatolites in the study area. 相似文献

Acetaldehyde and ethanol are usually thought to be produced in plant tissues as a mechanism to tolerate hypoxic conditions. We have found acetaldehyde and ethanol to be common in the vascular cambium and in the transpiration stream of trees. In nonflooded trees, acetaldehyde and ethanol concentrations averaged 130 and 40 μ M in the cambium and 130 and 50 μ M in the xylem sap, respectively. Ethanol concentrations in the transpiration stream and the cambium increased to as much as 5 m M upon flooding. Ethanol concentrations in the vascular cambium of Populus deltoides could not be eliminated by placing logs from nonflooded trees in a pure oxygen environment for as long as 96 h, but increased by almost 3 orders of magnitude when logs were exposed to low external partial pressures of O2 . These results suggest that the vascular cambium was not hypoxic, despite the presence of acetaldehyde, ethanol and the enzymes for their synthesis. 相似文献

Multiple sightings of a distinctive but unidentified species of beaked whale have been made in the eastern tropical Pacific. The unidentified whale has two color morphs: a conspicuously marked black and white form (judged to be larger), and a uniformly gray-brown form. Maximum length estimates have been 5–5.5 m. Other features include a relatively flat head, with a small, distinct melon; a moderately long beak; and a low, wide-based, triangular dorsal fin. On most animals the trailing edge of the dorsal fin is only slightly falcate and often appears straight. On the black and white morph, a broad white or cream-colored swathe originates immediately posterior to the dorsal surface of the head and runs posterio-ventrally on either side of the animal. The prevalence of scarring on the black and white animals suggests sexual dimorphism and that these larger, more conspicuously marked animals are adult males, while the smaller, browner, unscarred animals are females and young. Possibilities for identification include: 1) a well-marked race of a known Mesoplodon sp., 2) Mesoplodon (Indopacetus) pacificus or 3) an undescribed species. 相似文献

ABSTRACT Our objective was to determine whether there were subpopulations within the eastern population of tundra swans (Cygnus columbianus columbianus) wintering along the mid-Atlantic coast. Movement rates between regions were substantial enough to result in continual mixing of wintering birds. Thus, we were unable to identify distinct subpopulations based on exclusive use of specific wintering areas. The paper presents vegetation and climate reconstructions for Eemian and Early Weichselian in Central Europe based on detailed pollen data of the Klinge section. The sediments exposed in this profile were accumulated from the Saalian termination up to the Early Weichselian glaciation. A succession of forest communities, typical for the Eemian interglacial has been recorded. Pollen data indicate some oscillations during the very end of the Eemian (biozone E7). The climatic reconstructions show the heat supply rising gradually from the beginning of the interglacial to its middle part. A long-term cooling trend in January temperature was reconstructed for the second half of the interglacial. The difference between the optimum (zone E4b) and Pinus-Picea-Abies zone (E6) amounts to 4 °C, during the Pinus zone (E7) the temperature further decreased by 8 °C. The new family Aquaumbridae is described based on distinct morphological characters and supported by a molecular phylogenetic analysis. Aquaumbridae is similar to Nidaliidae, Nepththeidae and Alcyoniidae in having arborescent colonies and lacking axis structure or stolons, but differs from them in having very different sclerite composition and having conspicuous transparent jelly-like lobes. Phylogenetic analysis of two mitochondrial genes, ND2 and mtMutS, strongly supports its placement in a separated clade. Herein we describe Aquaumbra klapferi sp. nov., gen. nov. in the new family. The organisms were obtained from the seamounts, ridges and canyons out of the insular shelf of Isla del Coco, Costa Rica, down to 400 m depth. The new species represents the first discovery of a soft coral in an eastern Pacific oceanic island, and provides hints of the biodiversity of the largely unexplored deep waters of the tropical eastern Pacific. 相似文献
