Darwin's concept of progress was an economic one, with the accumulation of adaptations having a strong analogy to technological innovations. This interpretation makes it easier to understand his differences with Lamarck and others whose views he considered metaphysically objectionable. It also clarifies his relationship to Malthus and such features of his theory as the episodic nature of evolutionary change. His position is consistent with modern theories of biotic invasions and long-term evolutionary trends. It also accords well with current efforts to produce a synthesis between biology and economics.  相似文献

The distinctness of the Anomopoda and the polyphyletic nature of the so-called Cladocera are emphasized.An attempt is made to reconstruct the ancestral anomopod, which probably lived in Palaeozoic times. This task is facilitated by the availability of detailed information on extant forms, which includes functional as well as purely morphological considerations and enables us to understand the means whereby complex mechanisms were transformed during evolution. The genusPittosporum includes about 160 species. Four species ofPittosporum occur in the Bonin Islands, and all of these are endemic to the islands. Electrophoretic studies of the four endemic species,P. tobira, from the Japanese mainland, andP. lutchuense var.denudatum from the Ryukyu Islands, were used to determine the origin and speciation pattern of the endemic species. 259 individuals were sampled from ten populations. Twenty loci in nine enzyme systems were resolved and used to calculate the gene frequencies for each population. A low genetic diversity was observed in three of the Bonin Island species, as is reported for other oceanic island plants. The exception,P. boninense, has the largest population size and widest distribution. A dendrogram generated by the UPGMA method shows two clusters. One consists of only the Bonin endemics, suggesting a monophyletic origin for these species.  相似文献

Islands present both a diversity and a stability paradox. They are often highly species-poor but have considerable biological interest in terms of extraordinary endemic genera and taxonomically isolated groups. They appear to be stable, as in some cases these organisms have persisted for many millions of years, and having an oceanic climate, extreme climatic events may be comparatively rare. However, when subject to extrinsic (anthropogenic) disturbance they do not appear to be stable, but often suffer catastrophic ecological change. These apparent paradoxes are resolved when it is realized that all these features are consequences of the same island characteristics: biotic isolation and oceanicity. As a result of these two characteristics, far oceanic islands are quantitatively different from continental systems in the nature of their ecological processes, which appear to give rise to an extreme punctuated equilibrium model of evolutionary change. Endemics may be ancient relict endemics displaying prolonged stasis and persistence, or products of adaptive radiation representing rapid punctuational events. A process-based definition of a relict endemic (palaeoendemic) is one whose founding lineage (i.e. the original continental source taxon) has not left any descendents. A corollary of this definition is that the time of divergence between an endemic and its continental sister-group should predate the colonization of the island by the now endemic lineage. An example is Dicksonia arborescens which has been on St Helena for at least 9 Myrs and no longer occurs in the likely source area of Africa. These relict endemics, frequent on islands, are important as the last remnants of tranches of biodiversity that have vanished elsewhere. Island conservation strategies require an integrated understanding of both sides of the diversity and stability paradox so that both island processes and island organisms can be conserved.  相似文献

Intracellular production of active oxygen in the brown alga Fucus evanescens C. Ag. was studied by measuring the capacity for in vivo conversion of 2′,7′-dichlorohydrofluorescein diacetate (DCFH-DA) to the fluorescent dye 2′,7′-dichlorofluorescein (DCF), both in emersed and immersed seaweeds. Algae were incubated in seawater containing DCFH-DA under a range of conditions, and it was also possible to load algae with DCFH-DA and then follow subsequent DCF production in emersed tissue. DCF formation was linear for at least 2 h in both darkness and light, with the rate of formation increasing with the light level. DCF formation was temperature dependent. It also increased when algae were treated with H2O2 or methyl viologen (paraquat), which disrupts photosystem 1 electron transport and increases O?2 production. Exogenous catalase reduced in vivo DCF production, presumably by lowering cellular concentrations of H2O2. Hydrogen peroxide was released into the seawater by illuminated algae resulting in external dye conversion to DCF. However, this does not interfere with in vivo measurement of DCF by loaded, washed algae because DCF leakage appeared to be negligible. Internal DCF did not affect photosynthetic oxygen production relative to untreated controls. Overall, our data suggest that DCFH-DA is a potentially very useful probe for studying active oxygen metabolism in seaweeds subjected to environmental stresses.  相似文献

Heat-shock proteins (HSPs), or so-called stress proteins may play an important role in cutaneous pathophysiology. HSPs are a group of highly conserved molecules that are expressed by all cells when subjected to heat or other forms of physical or chemical stress. The physiological roles of stress proteins are varied and are important in stress and nonstress conditions. They bind to other cellular proteins and participate in protein folding pathways during stress and also during the synthesis of new polypeptides. HSPs are also essential for thermotolerance and for prevention and repair of damage caused in DNA after ultraviolet exposure. Although HSPs are expressed in the skin in both epidermis and dermis, HSPs may influence many other cellular processes in the inflammatory and immune skin response. The RAD51 gene is a eukaryotic counterpart of the Escherichia coli recA gene which is involved in genetic recombination. Two distinct Xenopus laevis RAD51 cDNA clones (XRAD51.1 and XRAD51.2) were isolated from an oocyte cDNA library using the human RAD51 cDNA (HsRAD51) as a probe. Sequence analysis revealed that 98.2% of the amino-acid residues were identical between XRAD51.1 and XRAD51.2, and that both were 95% identical to HsRAD51. Both of the XRAD51 genes were expressed at a higher level in ovary and testis than in other somatic tissues, suggesting their involvement in meiotic recombination. The expression of XRAD51.1 was about eightfold in excess of that of XRAD51.2 in all of the tissues examined. Analysis of the rates of synonymous substitution in the coding sequences of the two XRAD51 suggests that these two genes diverged about 50 million years ago. The structural similarities of the XRAD51 proteins to RecA in E. coli and Rad51 in yeasts or vertebrates are discussed.  相似文献

A new insoluble polymer containing a Cinchona alkaloid derivative has been synthesized and used as chiral ligand in the heterogeneous enantioselective dihydroxylation of olefins. It is shown that the enantioselectivity of the optically active diols obtained from both aliphatic and aromatic substrates is always comparable to that observed in the homogeneous phase under the same reaction conditions. The three-dimensional X-ray structure of a complex of the potent neuraminidase inhibitor 4-guanidino-Neu5Ac2en and influenza virus neuraminidase (Subtype N9) has been obtained utilizing diffraction data to 1.8 A resolution. The interactions of the inhibitor, solvent water molecules, and the active site residues have been accurately determined. Six water molecules bound in the native structure have been displaced by the inhibitor, and the active site residues show no significant conformational changes on binding. Sialic acid, the natural substrate, binds in a half-chair conformation that is isosteric to the inhibitor. The conformation of the inhibitor in the active site of the X-ray structure concurs with that obtained by theoretical calculations and validates the structure-based design of the inhibitor. Comparison of known high-resolution structures of neuraminidase subtypes N2, N9, and B shows good structural conservation of the active site protein atoms, but the location of the water molecules in the respective active sites is less conserved. In particular, the environment of the 4-guanidino group of the inhibitor is strongly conserved and is the basis for the antiviral action of the inhibitor across all presently known influenza strains. Differences in the solvent structure in the active site may be related to variation in the affinities of inhibitors to different subtypes of neuraminidase.  相似文献

Thermolysin (Bacillus thermoproteolyticus neutral proteinase, EC 3.4.24.4) has been immobilized by radiation polymerization of hydrophilic and hydrophobic monomers, and its properties, such as enzyme activity, thermal stability and durability, have been studied. The activity of the immobilized enzymes increased with an increase in the hydrophilicity of the polymer matrix and with a decrease in monomer concentration. Immobilization with hydrophilic monomers increased the thermal stability of the enzymes, but the thermal stability of the enzymes immobilized with hydrophobic monomers was comparable with that of native enzymes. The durability of the immobilized enzymes was examined by continuous hydrolysis of casein; enzymes immobilized with a high concentration (90%) of hydrophilic monomers appeared to be stabilized and could be used for long times.  相似文献
