We studied the summer home range and habitat selection of harbor seal pups tracked using VHF radio telemetry along the coast of central Norway in 1997 and 1998. Median fixed kernel home range of six pups tracked in 1998 was 10.4 km2 and the median core area was 1.2 km2 . One particular deep basin (>100 m deep) was highly selected, and extensively used by four of the pups, probably for feeding. An area adjacent to the deep basin also was selected, probably for haul outs. One pup spent most of the time in inshore, kelp forest areas. Shallow areas without kelp forest and exposed land were used least frequently, possibly because they did not provide suitable areas for feeding and to haul out. The seals hauled out more during calm wind and low tide than during rough wind and high tide. Seals seemed to haul out on intertidal rocks associated with islands, and alternated between several haul-out sites. We found no pattern in haul-out activity associated with age, time of day, air/sea temperature, cloud cover, or rainfall. In 1997, seven pups were tracked manually. These data were associated with methodological limitations, and they were used only to illustrate that these seals stayed mainly within the shallow, inshore, kelp forest area, indicating a possible difference in habitat use between years. 相似文献

Data from a diversity of sources are consistent with the hypothesis that the Grand Cayman anole, Anolis conspersus, is descended directly from Anolis grahami of Jamaica. Although the two species have remained morphologically similar, coloration in A. conspersus has changed considerably from that of its ancestor. The most dramatic difference is seen in dewlap colour, where A. conspersus has evolved a blue and highly UV-reflective dewlap from the ancestral orange-and-yellow colour state. In addition, variation in normal (non-metachrosis) dorsum coloration in A. grahami populations is limited to shades of green (olive, emerald, teal), whereas in A. conspersus dorsum coloration varies from green to blue and to brown. This increased colour variation occurs despite Grand Cayman being a small, relatively featureless island only 35 km in length. Results of this study suggest that ambient light differences associated with precipitation-related vegetation structure may have played an important role in the evolution of A. conspersus body colour variation. Evidence is presented to show how geological, ecological, and physiological factors could have interacted to select for a short wavelength-reflective dewlap from a long wavelength-reflective precursor following the colonization of Grand Cayman from Jamaica by A. grahami between 2 and 3 Mya. 相似文献

Taxonomic and systematic theory is hopelessly confused because the term character has nine different, previously confused, meanings. After a historical analysis, it is shown that some form pairs, one used in taxonomy (= operational identification of phenetic patterns of character x individual spread) and the other in systematics (= theoretical analysis of patterns of taxonomy). The phylogeny of the genus Rivellia Robineau‐Desvoidy was inferred from mitochondrial 16S ribosomal (r)DNA gene sequences of 13 Korean Rivellia species and six species representing other platystomatid genera and the family Tephritidae. We compared the inferred molecular phylogeny with the previously published morphological cladogram. As a result, the following phylogenetic relationships were recognized: (i) monophyly of the genus Rivellia; (ii) monophyly of the R. syngenesiae species group; (iii) R. depicta and R. apicalis (which were not previously placed in any species group) were recognized as a sister group of the R. syngenesiae species group; and (iv) monophyly of the R. basilaris species group was recognized to a limited extent. These results, even though geographically limited, provide a new insight into the phylogeny of the genus Rivellia. They clearly show the utility of 16S rDNA for phylogenetic analysis of the genus Rivellia. Additional study involving samples from different geographical areas will be needed to gain a better understanding of the adaptive radiation of this species‐rich genus. 相似文献

Abstract. In the former brown coal mining area of eastern Germany, now scheduled as a nature conservation area, an analysis of the spatial distribution of vegetation was considered as an important tool in landscape planning. Therefore a comprehensive vegetation survey by means of satellite imagery (Landsat-TM), airborne imagery (CASI), and ground-based methods, notably habitat mapping and vegetation sampling was carried out. With respect to the scales of resolution the classification results of the four methods are, to a certain degree, comparable. Differences in the outcome can be ascribed to the fact that methods of low resolution result in a discrete array of polygons whereas methods of high resolution depict a mosaic structure with an underlying, continuously changing gradient. Provided that the biological meaning of the remote sensing classification is known, a shift from single vegetation patterns to the landscape scale will be possible. Neither satellite nor airborne imagery is restricted to the purpose of mapping but may also serve for vegetation classification itself. 相似文献

Abstract. Using old military and cadastral maps and modern vegetation maps, the changes in land use over the past 230 yr were followed. The following maps were used: the military map from the second half of the 18th century, the cadastral map of the ‘Economic cadastral survey for regulation of land taxes’ from the first half of the 19th century, and a field map made in the 1980s. A vegetation map of the area was made on the basis of satellite images. We used basic classification techniques combined with extensive field inspections and aerial photographs. The output of this procedure was verified in the field. Additionally, a comparison of statistical data about land use categories is presented. It was established that the last remaining areas of inundated riverine forest disappeared 200 yr ago, and since then only minor changes in land use have occurred. 相似文献

The self-organizing tree algorithm (SOTA) was recently introduced to construct phylogenetic trees from biological sequences, based on the principles of Kohonen''s self-organizing maps and on Fritzke''s growing cell structures. SOTA is designed in such a way that the generation of new nodes can be stopped when the sequences assigned to a node are already above a certain similarity threshold. In this way a phylogenetic tree resolved at a high taxonomic level can be obtained. This capability is especially useful to classify sets of diversified sequences. SOTA was originally designed to analyze pre-aligned sequences. It is now adapted to be able to analyze patterns associated to the frequency of residues along a sequence, such as protein dipeptide composition and other n-gram compositions. In this work we show that the algorithm applied to these data is able to not only successfully construct phylogenetic trees of protein families, such as cytochrome c, triosephophate isomerase, and hemoglobin alpha chains, but also classify very diversified sequence data sets, such as a mixture of interleukins and their receptors. 相似文献
