Preliminary investigations with ethanolic (EtOH) extracts from five Nigerian plants show that extracts of Piper guineense Schum and Thonn (Piperaceae), Cedrela odorata L. (Meliaceae), Dennettia tripetala G. Baker (Annonaceae) and Aframomum melegueta (Rosch) K. Schum (Zingiberaceae) in artificial diets significantly reduced larval growth of European corn borer (ECB), Ostrinia nubilalis Hubner, at a concentration of 1000 ppm (0.1%). An extract of Xylopia aethiopica (Dunal) A. Rich (Annonaceae) was ineffective. When the extracts were subsequently incorporated into artificial diets at 300 ppm and offered to neaonates, larval mortality increased in the order A. melegueta (13%), D. tripetala (13%), P. guineense (27%), and C. odorata (48%). Larval and adult emergence periods increased with increasing concentration of P. guineense, C. odorata and D. tripetala indicating a toxic response. Nutritional indices for habituated third instar larvae with the two most promising plant extracts, P. guineense and C. odorata, showed that the efficiencies of conversion of digested food (ECD) was significantly reduced at 300 ppm suggesting a postdigestive toxicity of the extracts. P. guineense and C. odorata extracts show the best potential for development as botanical insecticides.  相似文献

We compared above-ground allocation patterns in mature shrubs of Banksia hookeriana from three 13-year-old populations, growing on nutrient-impoverished sands to determine whether C (dry mass) could be a substitute for mineral nutrients (N, P, K, Ca, Mg and NA). The percentage of reproductive structures to total above-ground growth (reproductive effort; RE) was integrated over nine successive reproductive cycles. Only 0.5% of above-ground dry mass was allocated to seeds compared with 31% to total RE. Allocations of N (24%) and P (48%) to seeds, and N (44%) and P (65%) to RE were much higher. Allocations of K, Ca, Mg and Na to seeds (<1–3%), and RE (21–35%) were closer to that of dry mass. Relative allocation (RA) is defined as the proportion of a nutrient element allocated to a structure relative to its dry mass. RA of P to seeds was 91 and N was 44, but for K, Ca, Mg and Na ranged from only 6 for K to<1 for Na. Thus P, and to a lesser extent N, provide a much more sensitive measure of the relative cost of reproduction than C in this nutrient-limited system.  相似文献

Complete 18S ribosomal RNA sequence data from representatives of all extant pteridophyte lineages together with RNA sequences from different seed plants were used to infer a molecular phylogeny of vascular plants that included all major land plant lineages. The molecular data indicate that lycopsids are monophyletic and are the earliest diverging group within the vascular land plants, whereasPsilotum nudum is more closely related to the seed plants than to other pteridophyte lineages. The phylogenetic trees based on maximum likelihood, parsimony and distance analyses show substantial agreement with the evolutionary relationships of land plants as interpreted from the fossil record.  相似文献

Cysteine endopeptidases, SH-EP from Vigna mungo and EP-C1 from Phaseolus vulgaris, act to degrade seed storage protein during seed germination. Using transgenic tobacco plants, expression of SH-EP and promoter activity of the EP-C1 gene were analyzed in transgenic tobacco plants. The promoters of the two genes in tobacco seeds showed germination-specific activation, although post-translational processing of SH-EP and regulatory regions of promoter of the gene for EP-C1 were found to differ between leguminous seeds and transgenic tobacco seeds.  相似文献

Ch3, an endochitinase of 32 kDa present in Castanea sativa cotyledons, showed in vitro antifungal properties when assayed against Trichoderma viride. The characterization of a cDNA clone corresponding to this protein indicated that Ch3 is a class Ib endochitinase that is synthesized as a preprotein with a signal sequence preceding the mature polypeptide. Bacterial expression of mature Ch3 fused to the leader peptide of the periplasmic protein ompT resulted in active Ch3 enzyme. A plate assay was adapted for semi-quantitative determination of chitinase activity secreted from cultured bacteria, which should facilitate the identification of mutants with altered capacity to hydrolyse chitin.  相似文献

In vitro culture of barley calluses has been used to produce plants with increased glyphosate tolerance. Calluses from immature embryos of barleyHordeum vulgare L. (Jeff) were cultured on Murashige and Skoog medium with 10-6, 10-5, 10-4, 5×10-4, 10-3, or 10-2M glyphosate for one, four or thirty months. Plants were regenerated from calluses maintained in glyphosate medium at 10-6, 10-5 or 10-4M for four months, at 10-5 or 5×10-4M for one month and at 10-5M for thirty months. The progeny of each regenerated plant was analyzed for response to glyphosate. Some progenies showed increased tolerance to glyphosate.  相似文献

The effects of an aqueous plant-derived smoke extract, octanoic acid and ethylene on germination of light-sensitive Grand Rapids lettuce seeds were investigated. The smoke extract brought about a concentration dependent increase in germination and a complete inhibition of germination at high concentrations. Octanoic acid could not induce germination. Ethylene at concentrations over 5 L L–1 increased lettuce seed germination, but not to the same degree as smoke. Aqueous smoke in combination with ethylene showed a synergistic effect on germination at suboptimal smoke concentrations. At high smoke concentrations the effect of ethylene was almost completely inhibited. Octanoic acid in combination with ethylene brought about a higher level of germination than with ethylene alone, but only at the highest concentration of octanoic acid tested (1 mM). Standardized hexane and dichloromethane-partitioned smoke extracts and octanoic acid were subjected to TLC separation. The R f -fractions in the smoke lanes showing activity in the lettuce seed bioassay did not correspond to the R f -value of octanoic acid. As aqueous smoke can withstand autoclaving and can be separated by TLC and HPLC without loosing activity it is unlikely that the activity of aqueous smoke is linked to ethylene. Some plants in arctic and alpine habitats have heliotropic flowers that track the sun. This results in a heating of the flower's interior, which may improve the possibilities for insect pollination and seed production. Here, I examine whether flower heliotropism in an alpine population of the self-incompatible Ranunculus acris L. (Ranunculaceae) enhances pollinator visitation and seed production. Flowers of Ranunculus acris tracked the sun during the day. Tracking accuracy was greatest during the middle of the day. The temperature elevation in flowers was negatively correlated with the flower's angle of deviation from the sun. Despite the increased temperature, insects did not discriminate among flowers on the basis of their angle of deviation from the sun, or tend to stay longer in the flowers aligned closest towards the sun. A tethering experiment was conducted on three groups of plants flowering at different times in the 1993 season and on one group the following season. Manipulation plants were constrained not to track the sun, whereas control plants tracked the sun naturally. Solar tracking had no effect on seed:ovule ratio, seed mass, or abortion rate in any of the groups. There is probably a very narrow range of weather conditions (cold, sunny, and calm) where flower heliotropism may enhance visitation rate to flowers and their seed production.  相似文献

We conducted three experiments to examine the influence of ultraviolet-B radiation (UV-B; 280–320 nm) exposure on reproduction in Brassica rapa (Brassicaceae). Plants were grown in a greenhouse under three biologically effective UV-B levels that simulated either an ambient stratospheric ozone level (control), 16% (“low enhanced”), or 32% (“high enhanced”) ozone depletion levels at Morgantown, WV, USA in mid-March. In the first experiment, we examined whether UV-B level during plant growth influenced in vivo pollen production and viability, and flower production. Pollen production and viability per flower were reduced by ≈50% under both enhanced UV-B levels relative to ambient controls. While plants under high-enhanced UV-B produced over 40% more flowers than plants under the two lower UV-B treatments, whole-plant production of viable pollen was reduced under high-enhanced UV-B to 17% of that of ambient controls. Whole-plant production of viable pollen was reduced under low-enhanced UV-B to 34% of ambient controls. In the second experiment, we collected pollen from plants under the three UV-B levels and examined whether source-plant UV-B exposure influenced in vitro pollen germination and viability. Pollen from plants under both enhanced-UV-B treatments had initially lower germination and viability than pollen from the ambient level. After in vitro exposure to the high-enhanced UV-B levels for 6 h, viability of the pollen from plants grown under ambient UV-B was reduced from 65 to 18%. In contrast, viability of the pollen from plants grown under both enhanced UV-B treatments was reduced to a much lesser extent: only from ≈43 to 22%. Thus, ambient source-plant pollen was more sensitive to enhanced UV-B exposure. In the third experiment, we used pollen collected from source plants under the three UV-B levels to fertilize plants growing under ambient-UV-B levels, and assessed subsequent seed production and germination. Seed abortion rates were higher in plants pollinated with pollen from the enhanced UV-B treatments, than from ambient UV-B. Despite this, seed yield (number and mass) per plant was similar, regardless of the UV-B exposure of their pollen source. Our findings demonstrate that enhanced UV-B levels associated with springtime ozone depletion events have the capacity to substantially reduce viable pollen production, and could ultimately reduce reproductive success of B. rapa.  相似文献

Pinus mutoi is described as a new species on the basis of a permineralized seed cone from the Upper Cretaceous of Hokkaido, Japan. The cone is at least 20 cm long and up to 6 cm in diameter, consisting of a cone axis and numerous cone-scale complexes that are arranged helically around the axis. Two winged seeds are borne on the adaxial surface of each ovuliferous scale. Each complex receives a single trace from the vascular cylinder of the cone axis. In the scale base, all the resin canals occur abaxially to the vascular strand. The spatulate bract of the fossil is unique to the specimen among the cones of both living and fossil Pinus. The central umbo, broad sclerotic cortex of cone axis, and absence of serotinous features of the fossil cone suggest affinity with the subsection Sylvestres of the section Pinus, subgenus Pinus. This is the first record of permineralized preserved Pinus cone from the Cretaceous of Eastern Eurasia.  相似文献
