The15N abundance of plants usually closely reflects the15N abundance of their major immediate N source(s); plant-available soil N in the case of non-N2-fixing plants and atmospheric N2 in the case of N2 fixing plants. The15N abundance values of these sources are usually sufficiently different from each other that a significant and systematic difference in the15N abundance between the two kinds of plants can be detected. This difference provides the basis for the natural15N abundance method of estimating the relative contribution of atmospheric N2 to N2-fixing plants growing in natural and agricultural settings. The natural15N abundance method has certain advantages over more conventional methods, particularly in natural ecosystems, since disturbance of the system is not required and the measurements may be made on samples dried in the field. This method has been tested mainly with legumes in agricultural settings. The tests have demonstrated the validity of this method of arriving at semi-quantitative estimates of biological N2-fixation in these settings. More limited tests and applications have been made for legumes in natural ecosystems. An understanding of the limits and utility of this method in these systems is beginning to emerge. Examples of systematic measurements of differences in15N abundance between non-legume N2-fixing systems and neighbouring non-fixing systems are more unusual. In principle, application of the method to estimate N2-fixation by nodulated non-legumes, using the natural15N abundance method, is as feasible as estimating N2-fixation by legumes. Most of the studies involving N2-fixing non-legumes are with this type of system (e.g., Ceanothus, Chamabatia, Eleagnus, Alnus, Myrica, and so forth). Resuls of these studies are described. Applicability for associative N2-fixation is an empirical question, the answer to which probably depends upon the degree to which fixed N goes predominantly to the plant rather than to the soil N pool. Differences in responsiveness to potential prey and pollen were tested in the facultative predator,Euseius tularensis Congdon. Following isolation without food for 16 h, adult female mites were observed with one of the following potential foods: pollen ofMalephora crocea (Jacquin) Schwantes,Scirtothrips citri (Moulton) 2nd instar larvae,Tetranychus pacificus McGregor nymphs and ♂,Panonychus citri (McGregor) nymphs and ♂,E. hibisci (Chant) larvae, andE. tularensis larvae. Responses were compared using the proportion of encounters that resulted in consumption. This proportion was highest when pollen was encountered, followed byS. citri andT. pacificus. Consumption was much lower in response toP. citri and congeneric larvae. WhenS. citri larvae were encountered a 2nd time, 1 to 2 h after the initial capture and consumption, responsiveness increased to a level equal to the response observed with pollen. These results suggest thatE. tularensis is a more effective biological control agent of citrus thrips (S. citri) than of citrus red mite (P. citri). 相似文献

The phytoseiid miteAmblyseius barkeri (Hughes) (=Amblyseius mckenziei Sch. & Pr.) was used for biological control ofThrips tabaci Lind. in 7 commercial glasshouses with cucumber (a total of 5780 m2). Predatory mites were introduced 3–4 times in densities ranging from 40 to 300/m2 at each release. In 6 of the 7 glasshouses, control of thrips was satisfactory throughout the growing season. Thrips densities
were kept below 15 individuals per leaf. In 1 glasshouse, thrips damage was seen on the fruits at densities of 25 thrips per
leaf, but the thrips population was quickly reduced and remained at low densities for the next 3 months.

The effect of 5 constant temperatures (10, 14, 17, 20 and 23°C) on the oviposition and longevity ofIlione albiseta was investigated. Most eggs were laid at 14–17°C and mean oviposition period declined progressively above and below 14°C.
There was no significant difference between oviposition rates or preoviposition periods at each constant temperature, but
the mean number of days between egg laying for each female was significantly greater at 10 °C than at 17, 20 and 23 °C than
at 20 °C. The percentage of infertile eggs laid ranged from 9.2% at 23 °C to 17.9 % at 20 °C and these eggs tended to be laid
at the beginning and end of each oviposition period. A possible association between sex ratio of the emergent adult and temperature
is also discussed.

The purpose of this study was to reproduce and extend an earlier investigation of the effects of human exposure to combined, 60-Hz electric and magnetic fields. This paper presents the neurobehavioral results. Thirty men participated in one training session and four testing sessions. Subjects were randomly assigned to two groups. The 18 subjects in Group I were exposed (9 kV/m, 20 microT) and sham exposed in two counterbalanced orders. In Group II, half of 12 subjects were exposed (9 kV/m, 20 microT) every session, and the remaining half were sham exposed every session. The study was doubly blinded. Measures of cardiac interbeat interval, event-related brain potentials, and performance were obtained before, during, and after exposures. As in the earlier study, exposure to the combined field resulted in a statistically significant slowing of heart rate, in changes in late components of event-related brain potentials, and in decreased errors on a choice reaction-time task. In addition, field effects on several other measures approached statistical significance. The physiological measures obtained during exposure indicated that effects were greatest soon after the field was switched on, and again when it was switched off. The data indicate that changes in exposure level may be more important than duration of exposure for producing effects in human beings. 相似文献

It has been suggested that oxygen free radicals (OFR) depress the excitation-contraction coupling in cardiac muscle. It is possible that a decrease in the cardiac contractility in the failing heart may be due to an increased OFR producing activity of polymorphonuclear (PMN) leukocytes. We studied the OFR producing activity (chemiluminescence) of PMN leukocytes from blood in dogs with heart failure due to chronic volume overload. The animals were divided into two groups: I) normal, (n = 10): II) dogs with mitral insufficiency (MI) of 6 to 9 months duration, (n = 10). Hemodynamic studies were done to establish the presence of heart failure. Blood samples were collected to measure PMN leukocyte chemiluminescence. There was a decrease in the cardiac index and index of myocardial contractility (dp/dt/IIP) and an increase in the left ventricular end-diastolic pressure in dogs with MI indicating left ventricular failure. The peak chemiluminescent activity of the PMN leukocytes in blood of dogs with failure was about four folds greater than that in the blood from normal dogs. These results suggest that there may be an increased OFR generation in dogs with volume overload heart failure. The decrease in the myocardial contractility in the failing heart might be due to an increase in the OFR produced by the PMN leukocytes. 相似文献

Successional changes of sessile organisms over about 3 years on concrete plates immersed at depths of 1.0, 2.5, 4.0 and 5.5
m in Nabeta Bay, Shimoda, Pacific coast of Japan, were investigated from their species composition, percentage cover, and
the structure, metabolism, biomass and maturity of the community for the purpose of verifying the hypothesis of succession
by Margalef (1968) and Odum (1969). The process of succession was divided into five stages from a cluster analysis based on
Horn's (1966) similarity in community structure. The five stages were characterized from dominant, species and 18 community
attributes in terms of structure, metabolism, biomass and maturity. With the advance of stages, two large-sized, long-lived
species, the kelpEisenia bicyclis and the oysterCrassostrea nippona, dominated; 18 community attributes showed a directional succession ending in a constant community structure, low community
metabolism, accumulation of community biomass except chlorophylla and an enhanced degree of community maturity. This directionality in succession of community attributes was valid for the
prediction of Margalef and Odum, despite a tendency for estimated daily energy budget to be more heterotrophic in such an
open system. From these results, it was suggested that the definition of succession by Odum (1969) should be interpreted as
the regularity in shift of dominant species, not individual species, and as the control of system by feedback mechanism developing
