Phytoremediation is a technology to clean the environment from heavy metals contamination. The objectives of this study are to threat Pb contaminated wastewater by using phytoremediation technology and to determine if the plant can be mention as hyperaccumulator. Fifty plants of Scirpus grossus were grown in sand medium and 600 L spiked water in various Pb concentration (10, 30 and 50 mg/L) was exposed. The experiment was conducted with single exposure method, sampling time on day-1, day-14, day-28, day-42, day-70, and day-98. The analysis of Pb concentration in water, sand medium and inside the plant tissue was conducted by ICP-OES. Water samples were filtered and Pb concentration were directly analyzed, Pb in sand samples were extracted by EDTA method before analyzed, and Pb in plant tissues were extracted by wet digestion method and analyzed. The results showed that on day-28, Pb concentration in water decreased 100%, 99.9%, 99.7%, and the highest Pb uptake by plant were 1343, 4909, 3236 mg/kg for the treatment of 10, 30, and 50 mg/L respectively. The highest BC and TF were 485,261 on day-42 and 2.5295 on day-70 of treatment 30 mg/L, it can be mentioned that Scirpus grossus is a hyperaccumulator.  相似文献

A quantitative method to assay accumulated polychlorobiphenyls (PCB) in Rhodotorula glutinis is described which avoids any interference of extracellular adsorbed compounds. This method is based on a prior appropriate treatment of the cells before the extraction of derivatives by supercritical CO2 and GC analysis. The prior treatment consists in a double fixation of the samples with glutaraldehyde and osmium tetroxyde. After this fixation process the elimination of the extracellular PCBs can be achieved by washing the fixed yeast cells with organic solvents.  相似文献

This article presents the first attempt to quantify the levels and distribution pattern of endosulfan, an organochlorine pesticide in surface water, sediment and fish ( Chrysichthys furcatus and Tilapia zilli ). The samples were collected from three stations (Ovwian, Ekakpamre and Ovu) of Warri River in the western Niger Delta of Nigeria in 2006 during the dry and wet seasons (January–August). A total of 96 samples made up of 24 samples each for water, sediment and fish were analysed in this study. The pesticide levels were analysed using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC model CECIL 1010) to elucidate its distribution in various environmental compartments. The ranges of concentrations of the pesticide in the matrices were: 0.01–9.23 μg/l (water), 0.06–11.98 μg/gdw (sediment), 0.01–15.06 μg/gdw ( Chrysichthys furcatus) and 0.01–1.80 μg/gdw ( Tilapia zilli ). From this result, decreasing order of occurrence of the pesticide is as follows: fish > sediment > water. The concentrations observed in fish ( Chrysichthys furcatus ) were higher than the levels observed in sediment and water suggesting bioaccumulation of the pesticide by the fish. Spatial variations occurred with downstream stations having statistically higher concentrations in all matrices at P  < 0.05. Seasonal variations occurred with higher concentrations in dry season for water and sediment only, while the fish species had higher concentrations in the wet season. The observed values of endosulfan were above the ecological bench marks (0.02 μg/l) recommended by Nigeria Environmental Protection Agency and European Union. They were also relatively higher than those in previous studies on the Nigerian environment, an observation that calls for regular monitoring of the Niger Delta water bodies.  相似文献

Plants in the family of Cucurbitaceae family are known to up take organochlorines. This study was designed to screen seven cultivars of the Lagenaria siceraria species of the Cucurbitaceae family to determine their capacity to remediate heptachlor- and heptachlor epoxide-contaminated soil. The seven Lagenaria cultivars were grown in contaminated and uncontaminated Molokai soil for 13 weeks. The results showed that all the plants tolerated heptachlor and heptachlor epoxide at levels of 0.169 and 0.376 μg/g, respectively, in the soil and were able to bear a limited number of immature fruits during the short study period. All seven Lagenaria cultivars showed some ability to up take heptachlor epoxide into their vines with bioaccumulation factors varying from 1.0 to 5.2. The two contaminants were not detected in the fruits and heptachlor itself was not detected in the vines. The mean concentrations of heptachlor in the soil of all the pots including the no-plant control were not significantly different from that in the initial soil, which might be due to the gradual release of the soil soil-bound heptachlor residues. In the soil, all pots showed a significant decrease for heptachlor epoxide as compared to the initial level, but there was no significant difference between the no-plant control pots and the planted pots of six of the seven cultivars. The local Hyotan cultivar showed the largest decrease, from 0.376 down to 0.050 μg/g dry soil, and was the only cultivar showing a significant difference in the soil heptachlor epoxide concentration with the no-plant control.  相似文献

Phytoremediation is thought to be the most sustainable wastewater treatment option for developing countries. However, its application is often limited by unavailability of suitable candidate species. In the present study, the potentials of Limnocharis flava, Thalia geniculata and Typha latifolia for remediation of heavy metal contaminated wastewater with a constructed wetland system were evaluated. The wetland consisted of three treatment lines each planted with sufficient and equal number of a species. Duplicate plant and water samples were collected bi-monthly and analyzed for Fe, Cu, Zn, Pb, and Hg using the atomic absorption spectrophotometer over a six month period. Bioaccumulation rates generally increased over time and varied among plants for these metals, with Fe (456–1549 mg kg1 roots; 20–183 mg kg?1 shoot) being the most sequestered and Pb (1.2–7.6 mg kg?1 roots; 1.55–3.95 mg kg?1 shoot) the least. Translocation factors differed among the species but generally remained stable over time. L. flava showed potential for hyperaccumulating Hg. Removal efficiencies varied for the studied metals (~ 20–77 %) and were generally related to metal uptake by the plants. These results demonstrate the suitability of the species for phytoremediation, and the usefulness of the technique as an option for improving irrigation water quality in Ghana.

The Scoring and Ranking Assessment Model (SCRAM) was developed to serve as an analytical tool in chemical scoring and ranking of Great Lakes contaminants. The model provides an initial screening evaluation, based on minimal amount of data, of large numbers of chemicals to identify those chemicals that have the greatest potential to cause adverse effects. The SCRAM model is different from most screening systems in that it assesses uncertainty. The SCRAM model was used to score a list of contaminants existing or potentially present in the Great Lakes. Data on environmental fate properties, such as persistence and bioaccumulation potential and toxicity were compiled on selected chemicals. Uncertainty scores were also assigned based on incompleteness of the database. A score was calculated for each chemical and given a relative rank based on its persistence, bioaccumulation, toxicity, and uncertainty. The relative rankings of chemicals can be used as a decision-making tool to determine which chemicals need immediate research or monitoring based on their SCRAM score and the chemical's use and environmental loading.  相似文献

This study investigates the accumulation and distribution of nickel in Arundo donax L. parts to assess the potential use of this plant in phytoremediation of Ni-contaminated soils. The effect of ethylene diamine tetra-acetic acid (EDTA) and nutrient solution containing NPK on the plant was proped. A 35-day pot experiment was performed in the laboratory and the pots were irrigated with Ni-contaminated solution combined or not with EDTA and NPK. The growth of plants was evaluated at the end of the experiment. The accumulation of Ni was analyzed by atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS). The obtained results indicate that the plant was able to survive with high Ni content. The growth and the concentrations of Ni in the plant tissues were less affected. In the absence of the amendments, Ni was accumulated in the stems and leaves. However, the addition of NPK significantly reduced Ni concentration in the stems and leaves. The application of EDTA enhanced Ni uptake in roots. The translocation factor (TF) was greater than 1, which categorizes A. donax L. as a great candidate for Ni phytoextraction. A. donax L. is suitable for phytoremediation of Ni. This investigation contributes to the studies on the potential of phytoremediation technologies in Algeria.  相似文献

Effects of 2 toxicants, Mirex and Aroclor 1254, on Tetrahymena pyriformis strain W in axenic cultures were investigated. Mirex is a chlorinated hydrocarbon effective against the fire ant, and Aroclor 1254 is a compound structurally related to DDT and used extensively in various industrial processes. Both toxicants reduced growth rates and population densities of T. pyriformis grown at 26 C generally in proportion to concentrations of the chemicals, their effects becoming statistically significant (P < 0.05) at 0.9 μg/liter for Mirex and 1.0 and 10.0 μg/liter for Aroclor 1254. Ciliates exposed to the toxicants for 7 days concentrated Mirex 193 × and Aroclor 60 × as compared to the initial concentrations of these compounds. It is suggested that the chief effect of the 2 toxicants on populations of T. pyriformis and of similarly responding ciliates in nature would be to reduce the availability of these protozoa as food organisms and nutrient regenerators. The ability of the ciliates to concentrate the tested compounds would permit the toxicants to enter into and to be translocated through aquatic food chains. In this manner the compounds could exert toxic effects at higher trophic levels.  相似文献

Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) is a pesticide that was commonly used for decades worldwide. The use of DDT was banned in the 1970s and 1980s in Europe because of its high toxicity and persistence in the environment, bioaccumulation in living organisms and biomagnification through food webs. However, monitoring using both invasive and non-invasive methods has routinely reported the occurrence of DDT metabolites such as dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene (DDE) in wild birds, providing valuable information about the exposure to pesticides and potential differences between species and over time. Here, we analysed the relative proportion of DDE in the uropygial gland secretions of European Blackbirds Turdus merula from two localities in southern Spain. Given the negative effects of this pollutant on animal immunity, we also tested for associations between the prevalence of haemosporidians and the relative proportion of DDE in their secretions. Relative proportions of DDE varied between sampling sites and were higher in females than in males, regardless of their age. In spite of the potential immunosuppressive effect of DDE, haemosporidian infection was not associated with DDE presence.  相似文献

Abstract: The combined lesser scaup (Aythya affinis) and greater scaup (A. marila) population in North America has steadily declined from an average of 7.5 million breeding birds in the 1970s to an all-time low of 3.39 million in 2005. Bioaccumulation is widely known as the means of elevated levels of toxins in vertebrates. Our goal was to determine whether chromium and selenium were factors contributing to the continental scaup population decline by identifying wetlands used by scaup that potentially contain dangerous concentrations of chromium and selenium. We hypothesized that zebra mussels (Dreissena polymorpha) would contain the highest concentrations of selenium and chromium because they are filter feeders, whereas amphipods would contain the lowest concentrations because of their short life span. We collected zebra mussels, fingernail clams (Sphaerium transversum), chironomid larvae, snails (Gastropoda), and amphipods on randomly selected traditional lesser scaup staging and breeding wetlands. We found higher chromium concentrations in zebra mussels from Iowa, USA, than in those from Wisconsin, USA (P = 0.0074). In addition, selenium concentrations in zebra mussels from Wisconsin were higher than in those from Iowa (P < 0.0001). Higher selenium concentrations in amphipods were associated with sampled wetlands surrounded by developed land. Invertebrates with >5 μg/g selenium and >1 μg/g chromium are potentially hazardous for scaup. Chromium concentrations in Iowa were the highest for most species examined, whereas they were the lowest in Minnesota, USA. Based on our results, lesser scaup probably accumulate the highest concentrations of selenium on Lake Onalaska, Wisconsin, whereas they probably accumulate the lowest concentrations in Iowa. Waterfowl biologists are searching for explanations to the scaup decline; we propose chromium and selenium concentrations in amphipods and fingernail clams may be a factor.  相似文献
