The Liphook Forest Fumigation Project: an overview 总被引:2,自引:1,他引:1
The aim of the Liphook Project was to assess the effects of SO2 and O3, singly and in combination, on coniferous forest ecosystems. More than 4000 trees of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris), Norway spruce (Picea abies) and Sitka spruce (P. sitchensis) were fumigated for nearly 4 years using an open-air fumigation technique especially developed for the purpose. The technique eliminated artifacts due to chambers and enabled a variety of effects of the pollutant gases on forest ecosystems to be studied. Most symptoms of forest decline did not occur, but each species reacted in a different way to SO2 stress, providing no evidence for universal forest decline symptoms. However, some of the mechanisms hypothesized to underlie forest declines were observed as an effect of SO2 treatment, though others were not, notably any major effect of O3. The results are assessed against proposed regulatory standards (critical loads and levels) for the protection of forest ecosystems against pollution. 相似文献

An automatic system was installed for continuous analyses of ozone, sulphur dioxide, nitrogen monoxide and nitrogen dioxide in an experimental orchard with a canopy ofPrunus cerasifera plants in summer 1993. Air samples from three elevations (0.8 m, 1.6 m and 3 m above ground) were sequentially analyzed. Ozone concentrations above the canopy were usually higher than within the canopy; their relationships with stomatal resistance have been investigated. Sulphur dioxide levels were negligible. The stress sensitivity, determined in copper exposureexperiments and in survival in air tests, and thegenetic structure, measured by means of isoenzymeelectrophoresis, were assessed in populations of theBaltic clam Macoma balthica (L.) from itssouthern to its northern distribution limit, in orderto test the hypotheses that near the distributionlimit the clams would be more stress sensitive andwould have a lower genetic variability. Thepopulations in west and north Europe show a stronggenetic resemblance. The populations in the sub-ArcticWhite Sea are genetically slightly different, and showa low stress sensitivity. The populations in theArctic Pechora Sea are genetically very distant fromthe other populations, and show the lowest stresssensitivity. Near the southern distribution limit, inagreement with the hypotheses, genetic variability islow and stress sensitivity high. On the other hand, incontrast to expectation, near the northerndistribution limit, in the populations of the PechoraSea, the genetic variability was higher, thus notreduced, and the stress sensitivity was low comparedto all other populations. Expansion growth is limited if the difference between day and night temperature (DIF) is negative. Growth is also limited high salinity. Expansion growth of tomato seedlings was studied under day/night temperatures of 16/24°C and 24/16°C, and nutrient solution salinities of 3 and 15 mS cm-1 to ascertain whether interactions exist between the two stress forms. Water status was also studied in order to assess possible mechanisms of growth retardation. A significant interaction between DIF and salinity was found for all recorded growth variables. Hypocotyl length, plant height, leaf area and fresh and dry weight were lower at negative DIF than at positive, the reduction being greater at low salinity than at high. Increased salinity also reduced growth, more so at positive DIF than at negative. Growth reduction at negative DIF was accompanied increased shoot water and osmotic potentials. Pressure potential was unaffected DIF. Growth reduction at high salinity was accompanied reduced water and osmotic potentials. Pre-dawn pressure potential was increased at high salinity, whereas no effect of salinity on pressure potential at midday was found. The differences in effects on water status between the two stress forms may suggest differing mechanisms of growth retardation. 相似文献

The airborne fungal spore types were studied in different libraries in Delhi, using an Andersen sampler and a Burkard personal
sampler, for culturable and non-culturable fungi respectively. The concentration inside the libraries, before and after the
agitation of books, were compared with outside air. The major contributors to the library air areCladosporium, aspergilli/penicillia, smuts andAlternaria, varying from 50 to 14%. Some fungi (Cladosporium, Alternaria, smut,Penicillium chrysogenum andnigricans) showed seasonal occurrence, corresponding to their occurrence in the extramural environment. Aspergilli/penicillia,Drechslera, Curvularia andAspergillus flavus had a significantly higher concentration (P<0.01) inside the library, and recorded a significant increase in concentration after agitation of books. We examined the kinetics of airborne levels of mite allergen particles in a house by combined use of an indoor Burkard air
sampler and immunoblotting. Airborne mite allergens collected on the Burkard sampling tape were transferred onto a nitrocellulose
membrane, reacted with mouse monoclonal anti-mite allergen (Der pI) antibody, then treated with alkaline phosphatase conjugated anti-mouse IgG. Finally, the blotted allergen on the membrane
was reacted with BCIP/NBT phosphatase, and purple spots visible by the naked eye were produced. The shape of the spots was
observed under a microscope, and the spot area was measured by an image processor. This technique might be useful for analyzing

Summary Three cultivation systems were compared. In one system the alders were grown hydroponically. In the two other systems the alders were planted in gravel and either given water and nutrients at intervals or the nutrient solution was continuously supplied. Alders continuously supplied with nutrients and water showed a significantly more rapid growth, higher biomass production and higher nitrogen content than did alders given nutrients and water at intervals or alders hydroponically grown. Alders continuously supplied with water and nutrients had a constant RE (relative efficiency of nitrogenase) of about 0.80 throughout the experimental period while alders supplied with water and nutrients at intervals showed a slight decrease in RE at the end of the experimental period. Summary The lungs of 12 mice, half of which were exposed to continuous 0.5 ppm nitrogen dioxide for 3 weeks, were explanted in culture,
and the instances of macrophage congregation were quantitated according to numbers of target cells involved, categories of
congregation from three to 11 or more, numbers of macrophages participating in each category for the total cultures, and the
influence of delaying explantation for 24 and 96 hr. A total of 9042 macrophages and 2140 epithelial and spindle target cells
were counted in the outgrowths from 306 explants. The incidence of macrophage congregation (or numbers of target cells) was
greater for the cultures from the NO2-exposed animals, both with respect to total incidences between groups (p→0), and the 0-hr (p<0.001) and 24-hr (p<0.01) culture
subgroups. In addition, the values for T3 to T6 macrophage congregation were individually and consistently greater for the exposed animal group. Postmortem interval stress
at 96 hr appeared to result in large colonies, but they were reduced greatly in number. Also the incidence of macrophage congregation
fell by 28% as compared to 0-hr and 24-hr subgroups.

The physico-chemical characteristics and possible formation mechanisms of negative air ions are considered. It was found that the products of oxygen and nitrogen negative ionization reduce ferricytochromec and nitroblue tetrazolium, and that these reactions were inhibited by superoxide dismutase. The interaction of negatively ionized oxygen with water led to hydrogen peroxide accumulation, which was inhibited by tetranitromethane or catalase.
