The effects of three steroid hormones on the agonistic behavior of female Aequidens pulcher have been evaluated. Testosterone, estradiol, and cortisol were tested using an immersion technique to minimize trauma, and we also examined metyrapone, a blocker of cortisol biosynthesis. Two different experimental protocols were employed, the first investigating agonistic interactions within groups of fish, and the second examining the responses of isolated fish to models and mirrors. Differences between replicates were small, and both protocols supported similar conclusions. Each of the three hormones produced a characteristically different spectrum of behaviors when compared to the controls. Testosterone increased agonistic behavior in all experimental situations, while estradiol had a generally opposite effect; this may reflect the natural modulation of behavior by hormones during the reproductive cycle of A. pulcher. Cortisol also had distinct behavioral effects; available evidence suggests that this steroid increases submissive components of agonistic behavior, and that observed increases in some aggressive components are an indirect consequence, dependent upon the feedback of social information received by each fish. Metyrapone treatment greatly reduced all agonistic behaviors, groups of fish forming shoals typical of juveniles. This was not reversed by replacement therapy with cortisol, which suggests that metyrapone affects behavior by an alternative, possibly toxic, mechanism.  相似文献

Freeze-fracture and thin sections of lobster abdominal fast flexor muscle were used to study the morphology of the sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR) and T system of crustacean muscle. Tannic acid mordanting, which can result in a dense black deposit in the T system lumen, was used to distinguish T system from SR membranes. Ferritin was also used as an extracellular tracer to confirm the tannic acid method. The T system consists of an extensive network of flattened sacs which fills most of the space between the mycfibrils and is in close contact with them. The SR also appears as flattened sacs, sometimes with fenestrations. There is extensive junctional contact between the SR and T system. Quantitative estimates of the volume and surface area of the membranes show that the T system has about 50 % more surface area than the SR. The intramembrane particle (IMP) density of the PF face of the T system is about 1100/ μm2 membrane, while the IMP density of the PF face of the SR is about 4800/ μm2 membrane. In morphology, extent, and IMP density, the T system of lobster abdominal fast flexor muscle appears (AFF) adapted to provide at least part of the Ca2+ for muscle activation and the transport system for relaxation.  相似文献

The specialized cell types and two distinct regions of the adult Rhodnius prolixus cement gland develop from a simple pseudostratified epithelial tube during the 20–22 days of the fifth stadium. Feeding initiates the first phase, proliferation. Cells round up and divide tangentially to the lumen. Following the proliferation phase, differentiative mitoses occur and differentiation, resulting in secretory units (consisting of a ductule, gland cell and cuticular lining), ensues in the distal region. Ductule morphogenesis occurs without pseudocilia, thus differing from other insect glands. The complex changes in cell shape and interaction occur during development of the secretory unit. The secretory cell and end-apparatus develop from a double cell unit at the base of elongating ductules. The inner cell produces a complex end-apparatus of epicuticle that mirrors the microvillar pattern and then it degenerates. The ductules are lined by cuticulin and inner epicuticle while the central gland lumen has a layer of endocuticle as well. The epithelium of the proximal region remains simple producing the thick corrugated cuticle characteristic of the adult secretory duct. The mesodermal covering forms a thick longitudinal striated muscle layer that adheres to the epithelium via desmosomes.  相似文献

Glycogen was detected in the proventriculus of the tsetse fly, Glossina morsitans morsitans, by ultrastructural, histochemical, and biochemical methods. This organ contained ten times or more glycogen on a dry weight basis than was found in the thoracic muscle. Proventriculi of male tsetse contained less glycogen than those of females belonging to the same age group and in teneral flies the amount of glycogen was about 50 per cent lower than in mature, fed flies of the same sex. Although the thoracic muscle of tsetse flies was considerably lower in glycogen than that of blowflies the amounts in the proventriculus of mature females of the two insect species were almost equal. It is suggested that this carbohydrate store may supply the energy required for secretory processes.  相似文献

The effectiveness of the "Estes operation," which was developed to correct fertility problems in humans suffering from tubal incompetence, was studied using rabbits. The ovaries of mature does were surgically transplanted into their uteri and the effects of this altered state on reproduction, host tissue and graft tissue were appraised. Animals with transplanted ovaries showed normal breeding behavior, but the only pregnancies resulted when does that had received heterotransplanted ovaries also retained their own ovaries in situ . Young produced in those pregnancies were shown to have originated from ova ovulated from the host's normal ovaries. Transplanted ovaries disappeared from the uterus, either by resorption or expulsion, within eight weeks if they were separated from their pedicles but were retained if left attached to their pedicles. Presumably the difference reflects the state of vascularization. Scar tissue developed at the junction of ovary and uterus, and the endometrial epithelium became continuous with the germinal epithelium of the ovary. The uteri receiving pedicled ovaries retained their normal size. Those of ovariectomized does were about half the weight of normal uteri and those of ovariectomized does receiving unpedicled ovaries atrophied to a size about half those of the ovariectomized does. When intact does received heterotransplanted ovaries in their uteri, those uteri hypertrophied to approximately twice the size of normal uteri. The effects of transplanting ovaries to the uterine lumen, as reported here, could explain the poor pregnancy success rate in humans and the complete failure to achieve pregnancies in any other mammalian species by use of the "Estes operation."  相似文献

The present investigation aims to study the diversity of ciliates from different habitats in and around Delhi, India, and the correlation of this diversity with soil quality {agricultural lands (site 1 and 2), dump yards (site 3 and 4), sewage treatment plant (site 5), residential land (site 6), landfill (site 7) and barren land (site 8)}. Various physicochemical parameters of the different soil samples were studied and analysed for soil texture, interstitial water, pH, conductivity, total organic carbon, total organic matter, total nitrogen and phosphorous content, using standard protocols. Seventeen ciliate taxa belonging to four classes, seven orders, ten families, and 17 genera were recorded, with the maximum number of species (eleven) belonging to the class Spirotrichea. Ciliate diversity was highest at sites 5 and 6 and lowest at sites 1 and 2. Spathidium sp. was the dominant species in the conditioned land (site 8), while the ciliate Colpoda sp. was present in all the sites examined, showing the highest population density in the sewage treatment plant site (site 5). Statistical analysis showed that ciliate diversity was positively correlated to physicochemical parameters such as interstitial water, total organic matter and organic carbon, total nitrogen and total phosphorous content. Analyses of spirotrichs/colpodids (S/C) ratio and diversity indices implied that the habitat conditions of sites 1, 2, 3 and 8 are relatively unfavourable for soil ciliates to flourish; while sites 4, 5, 6 and 7 provided more favourable conditions. The ubiquity of ciliate distribution suggests their important role in the soil food webs and nutrient cycling, and their community structure and specific characteristics appear to be of major importance for soil formation. A full understanding of soil ciliate diversity and physicochemical parameters helps to inform best practice for improving soil quality as well as conservation practices for sustainable development and management of farms and cultivated lands. In conclusion, ciliate diversity serves as an important and sensitive bio-indicator for soil quality.  相似文献

In the present study effect of asiaticoside, on healing of skin wounds in Cirrhinus mrigala is reported. Skin wound, approx. 2 mm in diameter was excised using sterile disposable biopsy punch. Immediately after infliction of the wound, epidermis from wound edge starts migrating as thin sheet toward wound gap. Fronts of migrating epidermis gradually advance, and results in complete epithelialization of wound. Experiments were conducted for 30 days and fishes were divided into control, sham, vehicle control and asiaticoside treated groups. Immunohistochemical localization of proliferating cell nuclear antigen positive cells indicating cellular proliferation and caspase 3 positive cells reflecting apoptosis was carried out and their density at different post wound intervals in each fish group was analyzed. Significant increase in cellular proliferation as well as decrease in apoptosis in both epidermis and dermis in fish treated with asiaticoside compared to sham and vehicle control fish is observed at different intervals of wound repair. This suggests that in treated group healing of skin wounds in fish is enhanced than in sham and vehicle control groups. Asiaticoside treatment in healing of skin wounds would greatly be beneficial to fish farmers as it could protect fish from invasion of pathogens and check fish mortality.  相似文献

Male prairie deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus bairdii) were treated from weaning until 8 weeks of age with chemical stimuli from conspecifics or with control substances. Growth of the testes and seminal vesicles was retarded in males that were reared in contact with soiled bedding material transferred from cages of adult males. No additional inhibition resulted from the physical presence of an adult male either continuously or for 1 hr per day. Application of urine collected from adult males to the noses of young males retarded seminal vesicle growth. Removal of the olfactory bulbs of males at 3 weeks of age blocked the inhibitory influence of urine on sexual maturation. Exposure to urine from adult females did not alter the growth of the reproductive organs in young males. The ability of a male deer mouse to retard the sexual maturation of young male conspecifics (Bediz, G. M., and Whitsett, J. M., 1979, J. Comp. Physiol. Psychol.93, 493–500) appears to be a consequence of chemical stimuli excreted in its urine.  相似文献

Differentiation events accompanying the larval-adult ovarian transformation in Rhodnius prolixus can be divided into three phases: proliferative phase (unfed to 3 days post-feed or DPF), early differentiation phase (9–15 DPF) and late differentiation phase (16 DPF to moult at 21 DPF). Ovarioles remain morphologically larval until feeding initiates development. The unfed ovariole contains germ cells surrounding a central trophic core region with the ‘germarial lumen’ occupying the basal region of the tropharium immediately above the pre-follicular tissue. Mitosis of germ cells during the proliferative phase results in a progressive increase in tropharial size with no differentiation of tissues. Regional specialization within the ovariole marks the beginning of the early differentiation phase. A zone of oocytes is established at the base of the tropharium with nuclei containing synaptonemal complexes and condensing chromosomes. Nurse cell differentiation is characterized by nucleolar elaboration and nucleo-cytoplasmic transport, the cytoplasm becoming rich in ribosomes. Autoradiographic results suggest that functional nurse cell-oocyte divergence occurs concurrently with morphological divergence. Pre-follicular tissue is divided into apical and basal zones with apical zone differentiation occurring during early and late differentiation phases.  相似文献

在全球资源和环境危机下,物种和生态层面的宏观动物学研究已成为可持续发展的重要课题。本文基于英国自然历史博物馆和中国科学院动物进化与系统学重点实验室2009~2013年动物学领域研究进展的可视化对比分析,以揭示两机构近5年宏观动物学研究的现状、热点、差异以及未来发展趋势。分析发现,两机构在动物分类、系统进化与生物多样性等宏观动物学研究方向十分类似;作者聚类方面中国科学院动物进化与系统学重点实验室多侧重于中国昆虫纲研究,而英国自然历史博物馆研究的动物类群更具多样性且地区跨度更广;中国科学院动物进化与系统学重点实验室目前最主要的研究热点乃至未来相当一段时间的研究前沿仍为中国新物种的经典分类学研究;英国自然历史博物馆的研究热点则已转向中国和印度等发展中国家的新物种发现与描记,在经典分类学基础上的物种多样性和系统发育学研究则是英国自然历史博物馆宏观动物学的研究前沿。  相似文献
