A criticism of Zeeman's (1975) general theory of developmental organization, with special reference to amphibian embryogenesis, and based on a mathematical theorem using catastrophe theory to model the process of differentiation, leads to the conclusion that the model itself is not a rigorous scientific theory. Catastrophe theory in itself offers no new insight, merely a modelling of concepts of continuous organization, of process. These concepts are of considerable interest, but the claim that the theorem proves the necessity for primary waves in development is spurious.  相似文献

Modern anthropogenic modifications to aquatic environments, specifically hydrodynamic alterations, play a major role in cyanobacterial bloom potential. In shallow-water ecosystems, salinity is a driver of microbial communities and increases in salinity may facilitate the bloom potential of competitive cyanobacteria. This study investigated the osmotic response and mortality rate of a persistent bloom-forming (18 months) cyanobacterium, Cyanothece sp., isolated from Lake St Lucia (South Africa), after sudden hypo-osmotic shock. Laboratory experiments were performed with Cyanothece sp. cells to observe osmotic responses and to determine mortalities during salinity reductions. In general, Cyanothece sp. cells conformed to the external medium at all salinity levels used in the treatments, reducing their intracellular osmolality in response to salinity downshifts. There were limits to this, however, as successful downshift was not observed during the freshwater exposure treatment. Highest mortality rates occurred in cultures that were grown at high salinities (i.e. 180, 240 and 300 units), as well as in treatments with large salinity downshifts (e.g. 120 salinity unit reduction and direct freshwater exposure). Cyanothece sp. has been shown to sustain bloom status for long periods. Its ability to tolerate high salinities and respond to sudden salinity downshifts is an important factor in its bloom success. However, it is still susceptible to reductions in salinity that may occur due to heavy rainfall and floods, which highlights the importance that freshwater plays in the bloom ecology of a persistent bloom-forming halotolerant cyanobacterium, as freshwater inputs markedly influence the physiology of the cells and their survival ability.  相似文献

Concentrations of relaxin, prolactin, unchromatographed estradiol 17β (E) and progesterone (P4) were measured in serial samples of inferior vena caval blood, in three pigs, during late pregnancy, and parturition. Maximal relaxin concentrations occurred 60 to 24h before parturition, and ranged from 60 to 286ng/ml. Prolactin concentrations increased from 12.5ng/ml, 48 to 36 hours before parturition, to between 79 to 184ng/ml. At the time of the relaxin surge, E levels were high, and P4 concentrations were decreasing, thus raising the EP4 ratio. A surge in prolactin concentrations followed upon a decline of P4 to less than 10ng/ml, coinciding with the increase in relaxin concentrations in 2 gilts, and following the surge in relaxin in the third. Udder development occurred near the time of increased relaxin concentrations. ‘Milk let down’ followed maximal relaxin and prolactin concentrations in two gilts, and the increase in prolactin, rather than the increase in relaxin concentration, in the third.  相似文献

A new euglenoid genus and species, Tetreutreptia pomquetensis, is described from winter waters of Maritime Canada. This phototrophic species is characterized by four emergent heterodynamic flagella, two about the length of the cell and two less than one-half this length. Tetreutreptia pomquetensis has features in common with species of Eutreptiella while it differs in several respects from any of the described species of that genus. It could be assigned to the order Eutreptiales or Euglenamorphales sensu Leedale or the order Euglenales sensu Farmer. This new alga has a narrow range of temperature tolerance; it grows best from 0° to 7° C and dies at temperatures above 10° C. The optimum salinity for growth was near full-strength seawater. Growth conditions for the alga define the conditions whence this species was isolated.  相似文献

Poly d/[3H]A-r5U/ type of synthetic models of bacteriophage DNAs containing thymine analogues were prepared by DNA polymerase and tested for stability against nucleases /r was a n-alkyl group from methyl to pentyl/. The 5-pentyluracil-containing copolymer was found to be most stable: 50 % degradation with pancreatic DNase, spleen DNase, snake venom phosphodiesterase or micrococcal nuclease required 3–15 times as much time as that of poly d/A-T/.  相似文献

Mires with attributes similar to the patterned fens of boreal continental regions have recently been reported from northern Scotland. This paper reports on the vegetation and water chemistry of 18 of these sites. Most of the 18 mires displayed remarkable uniformity in their vegetation, with Carex lasiocarpa being a main character species. Major variation of plant communities is associated with microtopographical niches, similar to those found on ombrotrophic mire systems and secondarily with pH and conductivity of surface waters. Nine vegetation noda are described and compared with existing phytosociological associations and National Vegetation Classification (NVC) communities. The dominant Sphagnum - Carex communities are intermediate between the Oxycocco-Sphagnetea and the Caricion lasiocarpae and are thus difficult to assign to existing associations or to NVC communities. Although there is a large variation in pH of surface waters (3.9–6.6), mean measurements for terrestrial and aquatic communities are 5.12 and 5.51 respectively. pH levels are comparable with poor fen systems elsewhere in Britain and slightly higher than patterned fens in continental regions of Europe and North America. The vegeta-tional and chemical attributes of these sites therefore confirm the existence of true patterned fen systems in the British Isles.  相似文献

An adenylate cyclase (EC r.6.1.1.) was found in cell-free extracts of several Nocardia species. The enzyme from Nocardia restricta has been specially studied. It is a membrane enzyme which exhibits a strong specific activity, one hundred times greater than that of mammals. It has an optimal pH of 8.5 in Tris buffer and an absolute requirement for divalent ions, Mg++ or Mn++ (Mn++ ions are the most efficient). The kinetic properties of this adenylate cyclase are similar to those that could be expected of an allosteric enzyme having, as a substrate, the ATP-Mg++ complex and, as an activator, free Mn++ ions. Ca++ ions are activators: they set up the maximum velocity without modification of the KM. GTP is a competitive inhibitor (KI = 5.10(-5) M). Fluoride ions have no detectable effect on activity. Non-ionic detergents, Lubrol WX and Triton X 100, are inhibitors of the enzyme which has been partially solubilized by repeated freezing and thawing, following by brief ultra-sonic treatment. Catalytic sites are not modified after the solubilization, but cooperative effects between moles of substrate ATP-Mn++ are diminished: the KM becomes smaller and the sigmoidal shape of the curve v = f (ATP-Mn++) is attenuated.  相似文献
