The effect of simulated rainfall frequency on the pathogenicity of Pratylenchus zeae and P. brachyurus was studied in four greenhouse experiments. Corn and grain sorghum were watered at different intervals during predetermined cycles to create a gradient of water-stressed plants. Each experiment included nematode and uninoculated treatments. Growth reaction of plants to different frequencies of watering was significant but was not affected by the presence of nematodes. Pratylenchus zeae numbers differed among watering regimens on corn but not on sorghum. Numbers of P. brachyurus did not differ among watering regimens on corn or sorghum. Both lesion nematode species were harmful to corn, but sorghum increased plant growth in response to P. brachyurus. It is concluded that water stress is not the only environmental factor that influences the pathogenicity of these two species on corn and sorghum.  相似文献

Summary The effects of red and blue light on the orientation of cortical microtubules (MTs) underneath the outer epidermal wall of maize (Zea mays L.) coleoptiles were investigated with immunofluorescent techniques. The epidermal cells of dark-grown coleoptiles demonstrated an irregular pattern of regions of parallel MTs with a random distribution of orientations. This pattern could be changed into a uniformly transverse MT alignment with respect to the long cell axis by 1 h of irradiation with red light. This response was transient as the MTs spontaneously shifted into a longitudinal orientation after 1–2 h of continued irradiation. Induction/reversion experiments with short red and far-red light pulses demonstrated the involvement of phytochrome in this response. In contrast to red light, irradiation with blue light induced a stable longitudinal MT alignment which was established within 10 min. The blue-light response could not be affected by subsequent irradiations with red or far-red light indicating the involvement of a separate blue-light photoreceptor which antagonizes the effect of phytochrome. In mixed light treatments with red and blue light, the blue-light photoreceptor always dominated over phytochrome which exhibited an apparently less stable influence on MT orientation. Long-term irradiations with red or blue light up to 6 h did not reveal any rhythmic changes of MT orientation that could be related to the rhythmicity of helicoidal cell-wall structure. Subapical segments isolated from dark-grown coleoptiles maintained a longitudinal MT arrangement even in red light indicating that the responsiveness to phytochrome was lost upon isolation. Conversely auxin induced a transverse MT arrangement in isolated segments even in blue light, indicating that the responsiveness to blue-light photoreceptor was eliminated by the hormone. A study was initiated to determine the number, chromosomal location, and magnitude of effect of QTL (quantitative trait loci or locus depending on context) controlling protein and starch concentration in the maize (Zea mays L.) kernel. Restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis was performed on 100 F3 families derived from a cross of two strains, Illinois High Protein (IHP), X Illinois Low Protein (ILP), which had been divergently selected for protein concentration for 76 generations as part of the Illinois Long Term Selection Experiment. These families were analyzed for kernel protein and starch in replicated field trials during 1990 and 1991. A series of 90 genomic and cDNA clones distributed throughout the maize genome were chosen for their ability to detect RFLP between IHP and ILP. These clones were hybridized with DNA extracted from the 100 F3 families, revealing 100 polymorphic loci. Single factor analysis of variance revealed significant QTL associations of many loci with both protein and starch concentration (P < 0.05 level). Twenty-two loci distributed on 10 chromosome arms were significantly associated with protein concentration, 19 loci on 9 chromosome arms were significantly associated with starch concentration. Sixteen of these loci were significant for both protein and starch concentration. Clusters of 3 or more significant loci were detected on chromosome arms 3L, 5S, and 7L for protein concentration, suggesting the presence of QTL with large effects at these locations. A QTL with large additive effects on protein and starch concentration was detected on chromosome arm 3L. RFLP alleles at this QTL were found to be linked with RFLP alleles at the Shrunken-2 (Sh2) locus, a structural gene encoding the major subunit of the starch synthetic enzyme ADP-glucose pyrophosphorylase. A multiple linear regression model consisting of 6 significant RFLP loci on different chromosomes explained over 64 % of the total variation for kernel protein concentration. Similar results were detected for starch concentration. Thus, several chromosomal regions with large effects may be responsible for a significant portion of the changes in kernel protein and starch concentration in the Illinois Long Term Selection Experiment.  相似文献

Zea mays (Z. mays) is one of the main cereal crops in the world, and it′s by-products have exhibited medicinal properties to explore. This article intends to review the chemical compositions and pharmacological activities of by-products of Z. mays (corn silks, roots, bract, stems, bran, and leaves) which support the therapeutic potential in the treatment of different diseases, with emphasis on the natural occurring compounds and detailed pharmacological developments. Based on this review, 231 natural compounds are presented. Among them, flavonoids, terpenes, phenylpropanoids, and alkaloids are the most frequently reported. The by-products of Z. mays possess diuretic effects, hepatoprotective, anti-diabetic, antioxidant, neuroprotective, anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, plant protection activity, and other activities. This article reviewed the phytochemistry and pharmacological activities of Z. mays for comprehensive quality control and the safety and effectiveness to enhance future application.  相似文献

In order to explain and predict yield losses caused by European corn borer larvae, Ostrinia nubilalis Hbn. (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae), a mechanistic model was proposed to describe cavity appearance, their lengthwise extension, and their within-plant distribution. It integrates main dynamical processes of larvae: mortality, development and within-plant distribution. After its estimation and test under field conditions in 1988 and 1989, its validation, based upon X-ray photographs, is presented. This method allows cavity appearance and lengthwise extension to be followed without damaging the plants. This study confirms the relevance of the damage model and the rate of cavity lengthwise extension estimated with it.  相似文献

A hitherto undescribed virus, termed rottboellia yellow mottle virus (RoYMV), affecting Rottboellia cochinchinensis (syn. R. exaltata, itch grass) at Ibadan, Nigeria, was investigated. RoYMV virions are isometric, c. 29 nm in diameter, and sediment homogeneously at 114s. In isopycnic CsCl gradients, RoYMV virions band sharply at a buoyant density of 1.379 g cm-3, but in Cs2SO4 gradients, virions band at two zones, at the densities of 1.300 g cm-3 and 1.325 g cm-3. Treatment with EDTA at pH 8.0 reduced the sedimentation value of RoYMV to c. 87s and rendered it susceptible to proteinase-K, SDS and NaCl. The apparent molecular weight of RoYMV coat protein was c. 27 000. Virions encapsidate a single-stranded RNA of mol. wt 1.4 × 106 Da. Besides R. cochinchinensis, RoYMV was mechanically transmissible only to maize (Zea mays). No reaction occurred when RoYMV was tested against antisera to 44 isometric plant viruses (belonging to 12 groups), including several that affect Gramineae. RoYMV exhibits striking similarities with other viruses belonging to the sobemovirus group, and it is tentatively designated as a new member of the sobemovirus group.  相似文献

The difference spectroscopy technique has been utilized to investigate the temperature-induced spectral changes in mesophyll and bundle sheath chloroplasts of maize ( Zea mays L. cv. Ganga-5) in order to assess the role of different pigment-protein complexes in the manifestation of temperature effect on the chloroplast membranes. Cooling and heating of both mesophyll and bundle sheath chloroplasts resulted in absorbance difference (AA) bands at similar wavelengths but the degree of absorb-ance changes were significantly higher in bundle sheath chloroplasts. For example, upon cooling to 7-8°C, positive AA bands were observed at 440, 490 and 680 nm in mesophyll chloroplasts and at 440, 495–500 and 680 nm in bundle sheath chloroplasts but the absorbance change at 680 nm was ca 2% in mesophyll chloroplasts, whereas it was ca 5% in bundle sheath chloroplasts, which have a lower content of light-harvesting pigment-protein complex. The role of chlorophyll-protein complexes was further investigated by monitoring the temperature-induced spectral changes of mesophyll and bundle sheath chloroplasts isolated from lincomycin-treated maize plants where lincomycin selectively inhibits the biosynthesis of specific chlorophyll-protein complexes. Results indicated that depletion of certain pigment-protein complexes in mesophyll chloroplasts made them more susceptible (a ca 4% vs ca 2% absorbance change upon cooling and a ca 6% vs ca 4% absorbance change upon heating) and less tolerant to temperature variation (a 76% vs 39% reversibility during ambient→Cooling→ambient temperature cycle). The data indicate that pigment-protein complexes play a significant role in protecting the chloroplast membranes against temperature variation.  相似文献

Abstract. The activities of five active-oxygen scavenging enzymes were compared for cold-lability and three were compared for chilling induction in two Zea genotypes of contrasting susceptibility to photoinhibition during chilling. Activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD, EC 1.15.1.1), ascorbate peroxidase (APX, EC 1.11.1.11), monodehydroascorbate reductase (MDHAR, EC 1.6.5.4), dehydroascorbate reductase (DHAR, EC 1.8.5.1), and glutathione reductase (GTR, EC 1.6.4.2) in leaf extracts from plants grown without chilling stress were assayed at 19°C and 5°C. Enzymes from the chilling-susceptible Z. Mays cv. LG11 had lower specific activities at 5°C than did enzymes from the chilling-tolerant Z. diploperennis, except for MDHAR where no significant differences were observed. The activities of SOD and APX from Z. diploperennis were double those of Z. mays at both assay temperatures. Monodehydroa-scrobate reductase and glutathione reductase activities in both species were reduced by 63–78% at a 5°C assay temperature. The dehydroascorbate reductase (DHAR) showed the greatest low-temperature lability losing 96% (Z. diploperennis) and 100% (Z. mays) of its activity at 5°C. To examine possible chilling-induced changes in levels of enzyme activity, plants of both Zea genotypes were transferred to growth chambers at 10°C at moderate light intensities. Glutathione reductase activity was found to increase within 24h in Z. diploperennis, but it decreased slightly in Z. mays. MDHAR activity decreased by 50% in Z. diploperennis but showed only a transient increase in activity in Z. mays.  相似文献
