Three areas of the Indian River Lagoon, Florida (USA) were surveyed to show seasonal changes in the distribution and biomass of macroalgae and seagrass. Acoustic seafloor discrimination based on first and second echo returns of a 50 kHz and 200 kHz signal, and two different survey systems (QTCView and ECHOplus) were used. System verification in both the field and a controlled environment showed it was possible to distinguish acoustically between seagrass, sparse algae, and dense algae. Accuracy of distinction of three classes (algae, seagrass, bare substratum) was around 60%. Maps were produced by regridding the survey area to a regular grid and using a nearest-neighbor interpolation to provide filled polygons. Biomass was calculated by counting pixels assigned to substratum classes with known wet-weight biomass values (sparse algae 250 g m− 2, dense algae 2000 g m− 2, seagrass 100 g m− 2) that were measured in the field. In three study areas (Melbourne, Sebastian Inlet, and Cocoa Beach), a dependence of algal biomass on depth and season was observed. Seagrass most frequently occurred in water less than 1 m deep, and in November, seagrass beds tended to be covered by dense algae that also extended up- and downstream of shoals in the Lagoon. In March, the pattern was similar, with the exception that some areas of previously dense algae had started thinning into sparse algae. Macrophyte biomass was lowest in May in the Melbourne and Cocoa Beach study areas, with the opposite situation in the Sebastian Inlet study area. In May, seagrass areas were largely devoid of dense algae and most algae accumulations were sparse. In August, dense algae covered large areas of the deep Lagoon floor while shoals were largely free of algae or had only sparse cover. We suggest this summer pattern to reflect moribund algae being washed from the shallows to deeper channels and from there being removed from the lagoonal ecosystem either through tidal passages into the open ocean or by degradation and breakdown in situ. The differences between the study areas indicate high spatial and temporal variability in biomass and distribution of macrophyte biomass in the Indian River Lagoon.  相似文献

Hydrogen sulfide, produced by sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB), is one of the most potent malodors emitted from anaerobic swine waste storage systems. However, little is known about the prevalence and diversity of SRB in those systems. The goals of this study were to evaluate the SRB population in swine manure storage systems and to develop quantitative, real-time PCR (QRT-PCR) assays to target four of the SRB groups. Dissimilatory sulfite reductase (DSR) gene sequences were obtained from swine slurry stored in underground pits (43 clones) or in lagoons (34 clones). QRT-PCR assays were designed to target the dsrA gene of four novel groups of SRB. Sequences of dsrA clones from slurry samples grouped with those from three different cultured SRB: Desulfobulbus sp. (46 clones), Desulfovibrio sp. (24 clones and 5 isolates), and Desulfobacterium sp. (7 clones). However, DsrA sequences from swine slurry clones were generally less than 85% similar to those of cultured organisms. SRB from all four targeted SRB groups were detected in underground waste storage pits (6.6 x 10(3)-8.5 x 10(7) dsrA copies mL(-1) slurry), while only two groups of SRB were detected in lagoons (3.2 x 10(5)-2.5 x 10(6) dsrA copies mL(-1) slurry). To date, this is the only study to evaluate the phylogeny and concentration of SRB in any livestock waste storage system. The new QRT-PCR assays should facilitate sensitive, specific detection of the four novel groups of SRB in livestock waste storage systems.  相似文献

Diel and seasonal variations in abundance, population structure, biomass and production rate of the harpacticoid copepod Euterpina acutifrons were studied in the Cananéia Lagoon estuarine system, São Paulo, Brazil. Zooplankton samples were collected at 4-h intervals during multiple 24-h periods, from February 1995 to January 1996. Copepodites and adults of E. acutifrons were present in the plankton throughout the year (temperature, 18.6–29.4 °C; salinity, 4.5–33.0 psu; chlorophyll-a concentration, 1.32–20.42 g l–1). Abundance of E. acutifrons showed considerable diel variations. On most sampling dates, higher abundances were recorded at times when salinity was higher. Biomass varied from 0.044 ± 0.046 (daily mean ± SD) to 5.264±3.425 mg C m–3. The estimated production rates (minimum ± SD–maximum ± SD) were 0.034±0.035–4.95±3.25 (Ikeda-Motoda model), 0.035±0.036–5.123±3.347 (Huntley-Lopez model), and 0.016±0.017–2.101±1.372 mg C m–3 d–1 (Hirst-Sheader model).  相似文献

The restoration of the Atlantic sturgeon Acipenser oxyrinchus in Lithuania started in 2011. Two rivers (Neris and ?ventoji) were chosen for reintroduction in the Nemunas river basin based on historical data and ecological conditions. Since 2011, more than 116 thousand of sturgeon juveniles have been stocked in Lithuania. In order to achieve successful population restoration, it is vital to evaluate the efficiency of performed artificial stocking. Analysis of post‐stocking survival, migration patterns, predation pressure, fisheries‐related mortality and possible aggregation zones are all important to understand the main threats and prepare possible mitigation measures necessary for population establishment during the initial phase of restoration. Therefore, conventional and radio tagging studies were performed during the initial restoration phase in Lithuania. Atlantic sturgeon downstream migration was divergent in summer and appeared to have no significant associations with fish size, river quality or hydrophysical parameters, but in autumn migration speed and even survival in small rivers seemed to depend on flow velocity and water discharge. The distribution of recaptured tagged juveniles coincided with dominant currents in the Curonian Lagoon and Baltic Sea. Some tagged specimens migrated long distances, with two sturgeons from Lithuania being caught in Estonian and Finnish territorial waters at up to 800 km from their release site. Tag recapture analysis and mortality rate of tagged fish clearly indicate that annual fisheries‐related mortality exceeds the required threshold of 5% for population establishment. High survival in rivers indicates that the main threat for a successful sturgeon reintroduction program is commercial fishing in the Curonian Lagoon and Baltic Sea coastal zone.  相似文献

Crassostrea virginica, the eastern oyster, is a native foundational species that inhabits coastal and estuarine ecosystems along the western Atlantic seaboard. Introduction of C. virginica into estuarine areas with limited or no extant populations is gaining popularity as a pro‐active approach for improving estuarine water quality and creating natural wave breaks for shoreline stabilization. Adult oysters, grown by 113 community members under their private docks, were collected and deployed at three county‐owned sites along the Indian River Lagoon within Brevard County, Florida. In this shallow, warm‐water estuary, replicate treatments deployed at each site included bagged adult oysters collected from gardeners in fall 2014, bagged adult oysters from spring 2015 gardeners, bagged blank (clean) shell, and empty plots (control). Prior to deployment, morphometric data (shell length, weight) were collected on all gardened oysters. Morphometric data were then collected quarterly for all surviving and recruited oysters for 18 months. Our monitoring timeframe was sufficient for assessing survival of gardened oysters, but likely not sufficient to understand recruitment patterns. In areas with no recruitment and limited gardened oyster survival, regular enhancement with live oysters would be needed for long‐term success. In areas with natural recruitment, the blank shell treatment was most successful. Lessons learned from this study include: (1) need for better tracking of abiotic variables (e.g. salinity) where gardening occurred, (2) role of seasonality in initial post‐deployment survival, even in a warm‐water estuary, and (3) importance of pilot studies prior to large‐scale gardened oyster deployments.  相似文献

Smooth cordgrass (Spartina alterniflora) is a foundation species that naturally occurs along the Atlantic coast of North America and is often used in restoration due to its extensive rooting capacity and ability to halt erosion. Clonal species, such as S. alterniflora, are easy to rear for transplant, but using a predominantly asexual species for restoration may lead to genetically depauperate populations. We (1) identified if genetic diversity was maintained during restoration; (2) determined if genotypes from the native populations were genetically distinct from the restored populations; and (3) evaluated if current efforts limited the number of multiple copies of the same multilocus genotypes (MLG) within restoration sites along the shorelines of the Mosquito Lagoon (ML), Florida, United States. All objectives were addressed where only one representative of an identical MLG was retained within each population. We found that allelic richness (p = 0.618) and expected heterozygosity (p = 0.527) did not significantly differ between restored and natural populations. Furthermore, pairwise FST estimates between naturally occurring populations ranged from 0.021 to 0.178, while estimates ranged from approximately 0 to 0.084 among restored populations. When we evaluated differentiation between natural and restored populations, average FST was 0.087. Finally, we found that higher numbers of samples with multiple copies of the same MLG occurred in restored populations (31.4–55.9% of samples per population) compared to natural populations (0–11.8% of samples per population). Overall, we found that current restoration efforts in the ML are effective at maintaining natural levels of genetic diversity.  相似文献

In this paper we present and analyze a nutrient-oxygen-phytoplankton-zooplankton mathematical model simulating lagoon ecological interactions. We obtain sufficient conditions, based on principal eigenvalue criteria – for the existence of periodic solutions. A decoupled model which arises in the high nutrient regime is then considered in further detail for gathering some explicit conditions on parameters and averages of exogenous inputs needed for coexistence. An application to Italian coastal lagoons is finally obtained by parameter estimation and comparison with real data. A biological interpretation of the mathematical results is also presented. This paper investigates the potential of remotely sensed data to map turbidity in a coral reef lagoon and to calibrate a numerical model of fine suspended-sediment transport. Simultaneous measurements of turbidity depth-profile and above-water spectral reflectance integrated according Landsat 7 ETM+ band 2 spectral sensitivity provide a linear regression relationship for the southwest lagoon of New Caledonia (r2=0.95, n=40). This relationship is applied to an empirically atmospherically corrected Landsat ETM+ image of the lagoon acquired on October 23, 2002. A comparison between Landsat estimates of turbidity and concurrent measurements at 14 stations indicates that the mean standard error in the satellite-estimated turbidity is 17.5%. The numerical model introduced in Douillet et al. (2001) is used to simulate the transport of fine suspended sediments in the lagoon in October 2002. A calibration of the erosion rate coefficient required by the model is proposed using in situ turbidity profiles and the remotely sensed turbidity field. In situ data are used to tune locally the erosion rate coefficient, while satellite data are used to determine its spatial zonation. We discuss necessary improvements in coupled studies of fine-sediment transport in coastal zones, namely relationships between turbidity and sediment concentration, integration of wave influence in the model, and correction of bottom reflection in satellite data processing.  相似文献

Oysters serve as keystone species and ecosystem engineers in estuaries due to their fundamental role of providing services to the surrounding environment and to humans. Globally, however, oysters have precipitously declined in numbers over the last century. To remedy this drastic decrease, many coastal areas have initiated oyster restoration projects. In the Indian River Lagoon (IRL) of Florida, where oyster loss was primarily the result of recreational boat wake dislodgment, researchers have put in place a unique method to supplement natural recruitment of oysters. This method consists of deploying stabilized shell attached to mesh mats. Larval oysters thus have substrate on which to settle and three‐dimensional reef habitats have been reestablished in historical footprints. This restoration project has proven to be successful, shown by 9 years of data collection on growth, recruitment, and survivability. In this study, we sought to determine the length of time required for newly restored oyster reefs to reach equivalent levels of genetic diversity as undisturbed, natural (reference) oyster reefs. Additionally, we determined if recreational harvesting impacted the genetic diversity of these reference reefs. Using nine microsatellite loci, we found that restored oyster reefs accumulated as much genetic diversity as natural reefs as quickly as 1 month after stabilized shells were deployed. We likewise found that harvesting did not impact genetic diversity in oyster reefs in the IRL. These results are encouraging, and are a valuable addition to understanding the importance of oyster reef restoration on the ecosystem.  相似文献

Salt marshes of the Indian River Lagoon, Florida (USA) were once prolific producers of mosquitoes. Mosquitoes lay their eggs on the infrequently-flooded high marsh surface when the soil surface is exposed. The eggs hatch when the high marsh is flooded by the infrequent high tides or summer rains. To control mosquito production, most of the salt marshes (over 16.200 ha) were impounded by the early 1970s. Flooding, usually by pumping water from the Lagoon, effectively controlled mosquitoes. However, impounding had a profoundly negative impact on the wetland plant, fish, and invertebrate communities. Isolation from the Lagoon cut off aquatic access by transient estuarine species that used the wetlands for feeding or as nursery area. In one study, the number of fish species dropped from 16 to 5 after impounding. Wetland vegetation within some impoundments was totally eliminated; other impoundments developed into freshwater systems. When tidal exchange is restored through hydrologic connection, usually by culverts installed through the perimeter dike, recovery to more natural conditions is often rapid. In one impoundment where wetland vegetation was totally eliminated, recovery of salt-tolerant plants began almost immediately. In another, cover of salt-tolerant plants increased 1,056% in less than 3 years. Fisheries species that benefitted the most were snook, ladyfish, and striped mullet. Over 1,500 juvenile snook were captured in a single 3-hr flood-tide culvert trap as they attempted to migrate into an impoundment. The zooplankton community rapidly returned to the more typical marsh-Lagoon community. Water quality and sediment sulfides returned to typical marsh values. Overall, reconnection enhances natural productivity and diversity, although water quality in the perimeter ditch, an artifact of dike construction, remains problematic.Earlier experiments demonstrated that flooding only during the summer mosquito breeding season provided as effective mosquito control as year-round flooding. In standard management, the impoundment is flooded in summer, then left open to the Lagoon through culverts the rest of the year. Culverts are typically opened when the fall sea level rise first floods the high marsh.Impoundment reconnection is being implemented by a multi-agency partnership. The total reconnected area is expected to reach 9,454 ha by the end of 1998, representing 60% of the impounded wetlands in the entire IRL system. One stumbling block is private ownership of many of the remaining isolated impoundments.University of Florida, IFAS, Journal Series No. R-05201.Harbor Branch Contribution Number 1152.Corresponding editor: R.E.
