Questions

Rhododendron ponticum subsp. baeticum is an invasive shrub of growing concern in continental Europe, but little is known about its impact on native plant communities. Here we ask: do environmental conditions differ between forest stands invaded by it and uninvaded stands? Do these differences correlate with R. ponticum's cover? Are these differences associated with differences in taxonomic and functional diversity of vascular plant species of the herb layer? Can these vegetation changes be explained by the sorting of certain life-history traits by R. ponticum-induced environmental changes?

Location

Several forests invaded by R. ponticum in the French Atlantic domain.

Methods

We recorded vegetation composition and a number of environmental variables in 400-m2 plots that were established in 64 paired forest stands (32 invaded vs 32 uninvaded). We compiled traits from existing databases. We computed several metrics of taxonomic and functional diversity. We compared environmental variables and diversity metrics between invaded and uninvaded stands. We used correlation and regression analyses to relate them with R. ponticum's cover. We ran RLQ and fourth-corner analyses to explore the relationships between R. ponticum invasion, environmental variables, species traits, and vegetation composition.

Results

Independent of its abundance, R. ponticum invasion was associated with lower light arrival at the forest floor and increased litter thickness. Concomitantly, species richness and diversity and trait diversity were reduced. The major driver of species assemblages was soil pH, which strongly interacted with the invasion gradient. R. ponticum did not sort species according to traits associated with shade tolerance and thick-litter tolerance. However, tree and shrub saplings were more abundant in invaded than uninvaded stands, at the expense of graminoid and fern species.

Conclusions

As R. ponticum becomes the dominant shrub, it exerts new selection forces on life-history traits of extant species, mostly via reduced light availability, increased litter thickness, and physical competition, thereby reducing taxonomic and functional diversity of the herb layer, without impeding tree and shrub self-regeneration, at least in the short term.  相似文献

Regional regulation of glutaminase by phosphate and calcium was examined in the temporal cortex (TCX), striatum (STR) and hippocampus (HIPP) from adult and aged male F344 rats. Phosphate-dependent glutaminase activity in adult rats was significantly lower (35–43%) in the HIPP (100 and 150 mM) and STR (150 mM) compared to PAG activity in the TCX. Phosphate activation in aged rats was 50–60% lower in the HIPP at concentrations greater than 25 mM compared to the aged TCX or STR. PAG activity in the TCX and STR was unaffected by age, but was significantly reduced (30–50%) in the HIPP from aged rats at phosphate concentrations of 25 mM and greater when compared to adult rats. In adult rats at concentrations of CaCl2 above 1 mM, PAG activity was significantly lower (60–75%) in the STR and HIPP when compared to the TCX. In aged rats, PAG activity (1 mM CaCl2) in the HIPP was significantly less (50%) than STR PAG activity in aged rats. Diminished PAG activity was seen only in the TCX (2.5 mM; 32%), and the HIPP (0.5 mM; 25% and 1 mM; 38%) at higher calcium concentrations compared to adult. Phosphate-independent calcium activation of PAG occurred in the HIPP but not in either the TCX or the STR. Addition of phosphate resulted in a synergistic activation of PAG in the STR and TCX, but not in the HIPP. These findings suggest that PAG is regionally regulated by phosphate and calcium, and this regulation is impaired in aged rats. Effects of DSP-4 on noradrenaline (NA), 3-methoxy-4-hydroxyphenyl glycol (MHPG), serotonin (5-HT) and 5-hydroxyindole acetic acid (5-HIAA) levels and on beta adrenoceptor binding kinetics (Bmax and KD) in rat hippocampus, cortex and hypothalamus were studied between 24 hours and 14 days after systemic administration. Beta adrenoceptor numbers in hippocampus and cortex, but not in hypothalamus, were significantly increased after DSP-4. No significant changes in KD values were observed in hypothalamus, but significant increases in this parameter were measured in hippocampus and cortex. NA and MHPG levels were significantly decreased in all three brain regions, but MHPG/NA ratios were increased in hippocampus, decreased in cortex and unchanged in hypothalamus. Very prominent increases in 5-HIAA levels were observed in all three brain regions, but only at one day after DSP-4. The greatest increases in 5-HIAA levels occurred in the hippocampus, but this effect of DPS-4 appeared to be slightly diminished by pre-treatment with fluoxetine. 树皮是维管形成层以外的所有组织,其功能性状是反映植物生态适应策略的重要研究对象。为了揭示亚热带山地乔、灌木小枝树皮功能性状特征及其关联性,采用独立样本T检验和标准主轴回归方法对武夷山19种常见木本植物小枝树皮的主要功能性状的基本特征及其相关性进行了分析。结果发现:(1)树皮厚度、树皮密度与树皮含水量在乔、灌木之间无显著差异,其均值分别为(0.78±0.06)mm、(0.58±0.03)mg/cm3和(155.07±14.16)%。树皮碳(C)、氮(N)、磷(P)生态化学计量特征在乔、灌木之间差异也不显著,C、N、P平均值分别为(492.43±4.25)mg/g、(8.90±0.74)mg/g和(0.61±0.06)mg/g,树皮C∶N、C∶P与N∶P平均值分别为60.76±4.17、905.53±67.36与15.19±0.84。(2)树皮性状之间存在关联,其中树皮厚度与密度、密度与含水量均呈异速生长关系,而树皮厚度与含水量、氮含量与磷含量均呈等速生长关系。乔木树皮碳含量和磷含量间、灌木树皮密度和氮含量间均呈异速生长关系,乔木与灌木各性状间关系差异不显著。结果表明...  相似文献

Luminol-amplified CL of whole blood phagocytes was studied in rats given 3 consecutive doses of 0.1 mg L-triiodothyronine T3/kg or in hyperthyroid patients, after stimulation by zymosan. In both cases, CL was significantly increased, in effect which was produced independently of the opsonization of the zymosan particles and markedly inhibited by azide. The in vitro addition of T3 or L-thyroxine (T4) to whole blood phagocytes from normal rats did not modify the opsonized zymosan-dependent CL, when assayed at the concentrations found in eutrhyroid subjects or in hyperthyroid patients. Administrations of propylthiouracil (400 mg/day for 2–3 months) to hyperthyroid patients reduced the CL response observed prior to treatment, to values comparable to those found in the euthyroid group. These data indicate that hyperthyroidism elicits an enhanced respiratory burst activity of whole blood phagocytes, probably related to adaptive changes induced by thyroid hormone on the mieloperoxidase-H2O2 system, rather than to direct actions of the hormone molecule or changes in the opsonic capacity of plasma.  相似文献

To examine the contribution of local versus extrinsic influences on postnatal development of cortical neurons, we compared the maturation of deep (infragranular) layer neurons in isolated slices of neocortex grown in organotypic culture to a similar population of neurons developing in vivo. All slice cultures were prepared from sensorimotor cortices of newborn mice (P0) and neurons in these cultures were examined at daily intervals during the first 9 days in vitro (DIV). The maturational state of neurons developing in vivo over this same time period was assessed in acute slices prepared from animals of equivalent postnatal age, P1–P9. Electrophysiological recordings were obtained from neurons in both cultured and acute slices, using Lucifer yellow filled whole-cell recording electrodes, enabling subsequent morphometric analysis of the labeled cells. We report significant changes in both cellular morphology and electrical membrane properties of these deep layer cortical neurons during the frist week in culture. Morphological maturation over this time period was characterized by a two- to three-fold increase in cell body size and total process length, and an increase in dendritic complexity. In this same population of cells a three-fold decrease in input resistance and changes in the action potential waveform, including a two-fold decrease in the AP duration, also occur. The degree of morphological and electrophysiological differentiation of individual neurons was highly correlated across developmental ages, suggesting that the maturational state of a cell is reflected in both cellular morphology and intrinsic membrane properties. A remarkably similar pattern of neuronal maturation was observed in neurons in layers V, VI/SP examined in acute slices prepared from animals between P1–P9. Because our culture system preserves many aspects of the local cortical environment while eliminating normal extrinsic influences (including thalamic, brainstem, and callosal connections), our findings argue that this early phase of neuronal differentiation, including the rate and extent of dendritic growth and development of AP waveform, results from instructive and/or permissive local influences, and appears to proceed independently of the many normally present extrinsic factors. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献
