Abstract Soil waterlogging decreased leaf conductance (interpreted as stomatal closure) of vegetative pea plants (Pisuin sativum L. cv. ‘Sprite’) approximately 24 h after the start of flooding, i.e. from the beginning of the second 16 h-long photo-period. Both adaxial and abaxial surfaces of leaves of various ages and the stipules were affected. Stomatal closure was sustained for at least 3 d with no decrease in foliar hydration measured as water content per unit area, leaf water potential or leaf water saturation deficit. Instead, leaves became increasingly hydrated in association with slower transpiration. These changes in the waterlogged plants over 3 d were accompanied by up to 10-fold increases in the concentration of endogenous abscisic acid (ABA). Waterlogging also increased foliar hydration and ABA concentrations in the dark. Leaves detached from non-waterlogged plants and maintained in vials of water for up to 3 d behaved in a similar way to leaves on flooded plants, i.e. stomata closed in the absence of a water deficit but in association with increased ABA content. Applying ABA through the transpiration stream to freshly detached leaflets partially closed stomata within 15 min. The extractable concentrations of ABA associated with this closure were similar to those found in flooded plants. When an ABA-deficient ‘wilty’ mutant of pea was waterlogged, the extent of stomatal closure was less pronounced than that in ordinary non-mutant plants, and the associated increase in foliar ABA was correspondingly smaller. Similarly, waterlogging closed stomata of tomato plants within 24 h, but no such closure was seen in ‘flacca’, a corresponding ABA-deficient mutant. The results provide an example of stomatal closure brought about by stress in the root environment in the absence of water deficiency. The correlative factor operating between the roots and shoots appeared to be an inhibition of ABA transport out of the shoots of flooded plants, causing the hormone to accumulate in the leaves.  相似文献

The plant growth regulators, gibberellic acid (GA3), ethephon and chlormequat chloride (CCC) were sprayed on young lettuce, cauliflower and bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) plants, which had either been given or not been given a mechanically-induced stress (MIS) treatment. MIS was applied by brushing the plants with paper for 1.5 minutes each day. GA3 increased extension growth of bean and leaf length of lettuce in unbrushed plants as much as in brushed ones. CCC and ethephon were less effective at reducing the height of brushed bean plants compared to unbrushed ones. The effects of CCC on the growth of cauliflower and lettuce plants was not influenced by brushing, whereas unbrushed plants responded more readily to ethephon than did brushed ones. The effects of CCC on growth were generally similar to those of MIS whereas the effects of ethephon were in many ways different to MIS.The results are discussed in relation to the use of PGR and MIS treatments for modifying plant growth.  相似文献

Excised young intact stigmas plus ovaries of Crocus sativus L. were cultured on Linsmaier-Skoog media supplemented with either a cytokinin or an auxin alone or in combinations. Benzyladenine and kinetin at concentrations of 0.1, 1, and 5 mgl-1 supported growth, and crocin was biosynthesized in the stigmas in vitro. Auxins had little effect. Young excised single stigmas or half ovaries were also cultured so as to form stigma-like structures in order to explore a possible new approach to industrial production of the spice, saffron. On Linsmaier-Skoog and Nitsch media supplemented with kinetin at concentration of 1 or 5 mgl-1 and alpha-naphthalene acetic acid or indole-butyric acid at concentration of 0.1 or 10 mgl-1 in combinations, stigma-like structures appeared directly and indirectly (through meristematic tissue), grew and matured. The maximum number of structures were 75 per half ovary. Summary The microdistribution of diploid and tetraploid plants of Dactylis glomerata L. was examined and related to their immediate environment in several sites in central Galicia, where morphologically indistinguishable individuals of both ploidies grow in sympatry. The two related cytotypes differed in habitat preference. Diploids were mainly confined to the low-density forest-floor habitat in woodlands of mostly ancient origin, whereas tetraploids were widespread in varied habitats but clearly predominant in open areas, particularly in disturbed anthropic sites. The in situ comparison of plant performance showed that where plants of each ploidy were more common they produced more tillers, panicles and seeds. This habitat preference closely reflected differences in life-history characteristics. The tetraploids had an early and short flowering time almost always completed before the aestival drought, whereas the diploids began to flower several weeks later and flowered throughout the drought. Comparisons along artificial gradients of soil water availability and light transmittance indicated that the cytotypes had distinct physiological requirements which probably originated in metabolic and more general genetic differentiation and could be directly attributable to ploidy. Habitat differentiation increases the species' colonizing ability. It also amplifies divergence in reproductive strategy between diploids and tetraploids, which reduces ineffective crossing between cytotypes and thereby permits them to coexist in sympatry. The effect of hybridization at the polyploid level on the differentiation between cytotypes was assessed from the recent introduction of a foreign tetraploid entity into the study area. Hybridization between the two distinct tetraploids was found to increase habitat differentiation between the diploids and the tetraploids, but the major part of this differentiation is probably attributable to ploidy itself.  相似文献

Summary Genes homologous to the mammalian mitochondrial NADH dehydrogenase subunit genes ND4L and ND5 were identified in the mitochondrial genome of the filamentous fungus Neurospora crassa, and the structure and expression of these genes was examined. The ND4L gene (interrupted by one intervening sequence) potentially encodes an 89 residue long hydrophobic protein that shares about 26% homology (or 41% homology if conservative amino acid substitutions are allowed) with the analogous human mitochondrial protein. The ND5 gene (which contains two introns) encodes a 715 residue polypeptide that shares 23% homology with the human analogue; a 300 amino acid long region is highly conserved (50% homology) in the two ND5 proteins. The stop codon of the ND4L gene overlaps the initiation codon of the downstream ND5 gene, and the two genes are contranscribed and probably cotranslated. A presumed mature dicistronic (ND4L plus ND5) RNA was detected. The postulated mRNA (about 3.2 kb) contains 5 and 3 non-coding regions of about 86 and 730 nucleotides, respectively; this species is generated from very large precursor RNAs by a complex processing pathway. Summary Laboratory data for the loss of root material by barley and field data for the growth of barley plants in Syria and in England have been combined to predict the amount of material lost by barley roots during a season, and to predict the resulting microbial biomass in the rhizosphere. The predicted microbial biomass C in the rhizosphere ranged from 10–34% of the total plant biomass C depending mainly upon the value used for rate of loss of root material. Total loss of root material predicted during a season in England constituted 7.7–25.4 percent of C fixed by photosynthesis. The major assumptions made in these calculations are considered, and the predicted values discussed in relation to reported values for soil microbial biomass, CO2 fluxes from soil and associative nitrogen fixation.  相似文献

In the developing peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.) kernels, the period between 15 and 35 days after podding (DAP) was identified as the active period of oil-filling. The period of active oil-filling was associated with a decrease in the starch, soluble sugars and proteins so as to make available the energy and carbon skeleton for the synthesis of oil. The oil content in the mature kernels decreased by 11, 12 and 25 per cent with Zn, S and Zn+S deficiency, respectively. In addition, proteins and starch content decreased significantly while that of soluble sugars increased slightly. The activity of malate dehydrogenase and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase also decreased due to Zn as well as S deficiency. The deficiency treatments resulted in a decrease in phospholipids, free fatty acids and triacylglycerols in mature kernels. Further the proportion of 16∶0 and 18∶2 decreased while that of 18∶1 increased in developing kernels.  相似文献

Five plant species were cultivated on a soil from the Neckar alluvial fan near Heidelberg (FRG) polluted by the emissions of a cement plant. Thallium, cadmium and lead concentrations in seedlings and mature plants were determined by atomic absorption analysis. AdditionallyBrassica napus L.napus was grown on soils containing 5 different concentrations of heavy metals, achieved by mixing two similar soils, from the same area but with different metal concentrations. Thallium and cadmium were shown to be taken up by roots whilst lead which was also absorbed, was deposited mainly on the plant surface. However during cultivation in the winter months, a remarkable deposit of lead via the roots was found. Thallium in the soil from a anthrorogen source was more available to plants than thallium of geological origin. During the lifetime of a plant concentrations of thallium and cadmium were always highest in the seedling. The decrease in metal concentration with maturity depended on the plant species and the element, but was not a function of the metal concentration in the soil.  相似文献

Maize (Zea mays L.) seeds differ in their relative tolerance to the anaerobic environment caused by flooding. Seed tolerance to flooding stress depends on cellular and metabolic processes since gross anatomical responses have not developed at the pre-emergence stage. The study reported here characterizes the activities of four anaerobic respiratory enzymes: pyruvate decarboxylase (PDC), alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), and malic enzyme (ME) in the flood-tolerant A632 and floodsusceptible Mo 17 inbred maize seeds during flooding at 10 and 25°C. Each inbred consisted of two seed lots possessing 95% and 75% germination levels. Flooding increased the activities of all four enzymes. However, no consistent correlation between anaerobic enzyme activity and flood tolerance was observed across genotype, seed quality and flooding temperature. The results indicate that it may not be feasible to use whole-seed anaerobic enzyme activities to predict maize seed performance under flooding stress. Summary Two diverse parents of upland cotton namely J.34 and I.C. 1926 were crossed. A comparison between biparental intermated progenies and F3 families indicated alteration of correlation coefficient between yield and halo length. The significant negative correlation in F3 population between these two attributes changed to a positive but non significant one in biparental intermated progenies. A change in correlation coefficients was expected due to breakage of linkage upon intermating. An increase in the correlation coefficients could also be expected when linkages are predominantly in the repulsion phase. It is suggested that intermating in early generations coupled with selection of desirable segregants may prove a useful method for improving yield and quality simultaneously.
