Diatom and water chemistry data from 35 wetland sites in western Kentucky were used to assess diatoms as indicators of ecological conditions in wetlands. The wetlands were affected by different degrees of acid mine drainage and agriculture. Canonical correspondence analysis indicated that the distribution of diatoms was highly correlated with conductivity and total phosphorus (TP), two variables commonly associated with acidic mine drainage and agriculture, respectively. Diatom-based inference models were developed for use as quantitative indicators of two important environmental variables in wetlands: conductivity and TP. Diatom-inferred conductivity and TP values were highly correlated with measured values. Cross-validation with jackknifing procedures suggested that high apparent r2 between inferred and measured conductivity was overly optimistic and should be treated with caution. Jackknifing-derived TP inference models performed poorly in predicting TP toward the ends of low and high TP concentrations. In general, the conductivity inference models based on plankton had better predictability than those based on epiphyton. Epiphyton-based inference models can predict TP better than plankton. Therefore, diatoms in planktonic and epiphytic assemblages could provide complementary information on ecological conditions. Our data suggest that diatoms can reflect major regional environmental gradients and therefore can be used as indicators of the ecological conditions in wetlands. Quantitative inference models with known predictive power can aid the development of realistic and ecologically sound biotic indices for this region.  相似文献

Most tools used to assess pollution impacts are based on structural, or less frequently, functional aspects of biotic communities. However, the application of measures that take a food web approach to understand the effects of stress on stream ecosystems offers a new perspective and promising insights. We assessed quantitative isotopic metrics, which describe characteristics of food web structure, as indicators of acid mine drainage (AMD) in 12 streams along a stress gradient and compared these metrics with traditional structural and functional metrics. The gradient ranged from highly stressed (pH < 3) streams with elevated concentrations of dissolved metals (Fe and Al) to moderately acidic streams (pH 3.6–4.9) with substrata coated in metal hydroxide precipitates and circumneutral reference streams. Key differences in food web structure were detected by the isotopic metrics. Specifically, fewer trophic levels and reduced trophic diversity characterized food webs in all mining impacted streams but the differences were not significant along the gradient. In contrast, most structural and functional metrics were significant predictors of AMD as stress increased. Therefore, our results suggest that isotopic metrics offer little advantage over traditional metrics in terms of detecting impacts for biomonitoring purposes. However, they do provide additional insights into how whole food webs are disrupted, and are likely to be more useful for guiding stream management and rehabilitation strategies.  相似文献

From the study of a raised bog complex in the former Bourtanger Moor in the northeastern Netherlands, which was formed between ca. 4500 BC and 1700 AD, it is clear that raised bogs are both very robust and vulnerable systems, which can develop within fairly broad climatological limits, but that they are also extremely sensitive to the effects of drainage caused by reclamation carried out by man. By means of good management, aimed primarily at restoring the typical ombrogenous hydrological system, in all likelihood it will be possible to develop the growth of raised bog in nature reserves suitable for this purpose, namely peat-bog relicts.  相似文献

The lower portion of Upper Three Runs, a woodland stream in central Pennsylvania, receives acid drainage from a strip mine. In 1974, the effect of this input on pH and benthic invertebrates was studied by Tomkiewicz & Dunson (1977). We sampled the same stations in 1986 and then treated the mine drainage with sodium carbonate for seven days in an effort to evaluate the short term colonization response of brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) and invertebrates. No differences in the pattern of pH and invertebrate distribution was found between the 1974 and 1986 results, although pH values and invertebrate densities were higher in 1986. Total number of invertebrates and number of taxa colonizing bricks during three pre-treatment time periods (8, 10, 18 days) did not differ from the single treatment period (7 days). However, two species of Baetis (Ephemeroptera: Baetidae) did increase in the treatment section during sodium carbonate application. The number of brook trout also increased in the treatment section, as compared to one pre-treatment estimate. These results indicate that motile species are able to respond within seven days, whereas, longer treatment may be required to produce community wide responses.Author to whom correspondence should be addressed  相似文献

The concentration of the C2–C5 carboxylic acids in the water column and sediment of shallow, eutrophic, drainage channels (Lewes Brooks, UK) were measured by gas chromatography. The concentrations of these acids were negatively correlated with dissolved oxygen. The highest concentrations of acetate (up to 200 M), propanoate (up to 38 M) and butanoate (up to 1.2 M) were measured during the summer in the water above the sediment, which became hypoxic during this period. Both acetate and propanoate concentrations declined at night. High concentrations of the acids were also recorded in reedbeds, which were also hypoxic. Only acetate was detected in the sediment pore water (up to 168 M). Natural acid mine drainage affects abandoned sulfide mines worldwide, causing hardpan formation and heavy metal leaching. Hardpans are characterized by very low permeability, thus representing a significant limiting factor for oxygen and water circulation in the rhizosphere. Our work shows the results concerning the gypsum biomineralization capability of a native Trichoderma harzianum Rifai strain in sulfide -rich hardpans. Two months after the fungal inoculum, hardpan clasts resulted, completely covered by T. harzianum mycelium, where newly formed gypsum crystals occur. Our study provided the first evidence about interaction between T. harzianum and sulfide -mineralized hardpans as well as about its influence on gypsum genesis.  相似文献

Water chemistry and benthic invertebrate communities were investigated at 37 sites on acid streams originating on the Stockton-Denniston Plateau, North Westland, New Zealand. The region is characterised by high rainfall and runoff, highly acidic soils and the presence of extensive coal measures that have been mined for over 120 years. Four groups of streams were identified: naturally acid plateau streams with clear water and very low conductivity; brown water (humic) streams with pH<4 and low conductivity; coastal plains streams with higher pH and conductivity; and streams contaminated by acid mine drainage. TWINSPAN and cluster analysis also grouped streams into four groups based on presence-absence of invertebrate taxa, the groups being similar to, but not identical to those based on physico-chemical factors. Diptera (mainly Chironomidae) were represented by most species in all site groups followed by Plecoptera in plateau streams, and Trichoptera on the coastal plain and where mine drainage occurred. Species of Orthocladiinae (Chironomidae), Plecoptera and Trichoptera were found at the most contaminated sites (pH <3, conductivity >900 µS cm–1, total reactive aluminium >25 mg 1–1). The leptophlebiid mayfly Deleatidium was found at 32 of the 37 sites, and some species of Plecoptera, Trichoptera and Chironomidae were also widely distributed. Our findings indicate that species tolerant of low pH (i.e., <4.5) are not confined to humic waters as has been postulated, but also occur in soft, non-humic waters where concentrations of labile, non-organically bound aluminium may be elevated.  相似文献

A field incubation technique with acetylene to inhibit nitrification was used to estimate net N mineralization rates in some grassland soils through an annual cycle. Measurements were made on previously long-term grazed pastures on a silty clay loam soil in S.W. England which had background managements of +/– drainage and +/– fertilizer (200 kg N ha–1 yr–1). The effect of fertilizer addition on mineralization during the year of measurement was also determined. Small plots with animals excluded, and with herbage clipped and removed were used as treatment areas and measurements were made using an incubation period of 7 days at intervals of 7 or 14 days through the year. Soil temperature, moisture and mineral N contents were also determined. Mineralization rates fluctuated considerably in each treatment. Maximum daily rates ranged from 1.01 to 3.19 kg N ha–1, and there was substantial net release of N through the winter period (representing, on average, 27% of the annual release). Changes in temperature accounted for 35% of the variability but there was little significant effect of soil moisture. Annual net release of N ranged from 135 kg ha–1 (undrained soil, no previous or current fertilizer) to 376 (drained soil, +200 kg N ha–1 yr–1 previous and current fertilizer addition). Addition of fertilizer N to a previously unfertilized sward significantly increased the net release of N but there was no immediate effect of withholding fertilizer on mineralization during the year in which measurements were made.  相似文献

Population genetic affinities of 261 European sculpins Cottus gobio L. across the Rhenanian-Danubian and the Rhenanian-Rhónian watersheds were assessed by horizontal agarose-gel electrophoresis of up to 20 allozyme systems (encoded by 29 genetic loci). Polymorphism Pmean= 0.0689 (range: 0.000-0.1379), and heterozygosity He(mean)= 0.0167 (range: 0.000-0.0507) indicated low genetic variability within local stocks from single streams. Significant genetic distances Dmean= 0.1917 ± 0.0336 (Dmax= 0.2407), based on differential fixation at 3–6 loci (Acp-1**, Pgdh**, Fh**, Est-1**, Gpi-2**, and Pgm-1**) distinguished populations from the Neckar catchment basin from those of the Hochhrein-Oberrhein and Danube basins. Differential fixation of alleles and pronounced genetic distances also separated sculpins of the Rh6nian tributary Doubs from Neckarian populations (Dmen= 0.2131 ± 0.0033; Ah**, Acp-1**, Fh**), of the Doubs from the Danube (Dmean= 0.2177 ± 0.0028; Gpi-2**, Pgm-1**, Pgdh**, Ah**), and of the Doubs from the Hochrhein-Oberrhein (Dmean= 0.1780; Pgm-1**, Pgdh**, Ah**). Genetic distances between streams within these drainages proved low (Neckar: Dmen= 0.0047 ± 0.0014, Danube: Dmean= 0.026 ± 0.0179, Rhine: Dmean= 0.0308). Screening of another 16 small-size samples consisting of 55 sculpins for nine diagnostic loci (Aat-2**, Acp-1**, Acp-2**, Ah**, Est-1**, Fh**, Gpi-2**, Pgdh** and Pgm-1**) confirmed the genetic homogeneity of sculpins within the Danubian and Neckarian drainage systems, but Neckarian sculpins were similar to those from the river Main. Populations from Hochrhein-Oberrhein resembled the Danubian stock but contained a decreasing frequency of ‘Neckarian’ markers when approaching the Danubian region. The genetic divergence between Neckarian, Danubian and Rhdnian sculpins suggests the existence of hitherto neglected taxa of anteglacial divergence.  相似文献

Methane (CH4) is the most important greenhouse gas next to CO2 and as such it contributes to the enhanced greenhouse effect. Peat soils are often considered as sources of CH4. Grasslands on the other hand are generally considered to be a net sink for atmospheric CH4. The aim of this study was twofold: (i) to quantify the net CH4 emission of intensively managed grasslands on peat soil in the Netherlands; and (ii) to assess the effects of grassland management, i.e. drainage, nitrogen (N) fertilization, and grazing versus mowing, on CH4 emission rates. Net CH4 emissions were measured weekly or biweekly for one year with vented closed flux chambers at two sites, one with a mean ground water level of 22 cm below surface and one with a mean ground water level of 42 cm. On each site there were three treatments: mowing without N application, mowing with N application, and grazing with N application. The dominating species was perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.). Net CH4 emissions were low, in general in the range of -0.2 to 0.2 mg CH4 m-2 d-1. In the relatively warm summer of 1994, consumption of atmospheric CH4 peaked at 0.4 mg m-2 d-1. On an annual basis, the sites were net consumers of atmospheric CH4. However, the consumption was small: 0.31 to 0.08 kg CH4 ha-1 yr-1. Effect of mean ground water level was significant, but small. There were no significant effects of withholding N fertilization for some years and grazing versus mowing on net CH4 emissions. We conclude that grassland management of intensively managed grasslands on peat soil is not a suitable tool for reducing net CH4 emissions.  相似文献
