Muscles are multi-functional structures that interface neural and mechanical systems. Muscle work depends on a large multi-dimensional space of stimulus (neural) and strain (mechanical) parameters. In our companion paper, we rewrote activation to individual muscles in intact, behaving cockroaches (Blaberus discoidalis L.), revealing a specific muscle's potential to control body dynamics in different behaviours. Here, we use those results to provide the biologically relevant parameters for in situ work measurements. We test four hypotheses about how muscle function changes to provide mechanisms for the observed control responses. Under isometric conditions, a graded increase in muscle stress underlies its linear actuation during standing behaviours. Despite typically absorbing energy, this muscle can recruit two separate periods of positive work when controlling running. This functional change arises from mechanical feedback filtering a linear increase in neural activation into nonlinear work output. Changing activation phase again led to positive work recruitment, but at different times, consistent with the muscle's ability to also produce a turn. Changes in muscle work required considering the natural sequence of strides and separating swing and stance contributions of work. Both in vivo control potentials and in situ work loops were necessary to discover the neuromechanical coupling enabling control.  相似文献

Behavioral thermoregulation of New Zealand sea lions (Phocarctos hookeri) was studied at a male haul‐out ground at Papanui Beach, Otago Peninsula, New Zealand. The proportion of time spent by sea lions in each of five postures (prone, curled, oblique, ventral‐up, dorsal‐up) and also with the number of flippers exposed or tucked (hind and fore) at different black‐bulb temperature (Tbb°C) ranges was recorded. Use of prone and curled postures (0–1 flippers exposed) declined as Tbb increased, suggesting that these are adopted to conserve heat; oblique and dorsal‐up postures (3–4 flippers exposed) use increased with Tbb indicating a role in heat dissipation. The transition between heat conserving and heat dissipating postures occurred at about 14°–20°C (Tbb). Both foreflipper and hind flipper exposure increased with Tbb and the trends were similar, but overall hind flipper exposure was 89% of foreflipper exposure. The results show that surface area of flippers exposed to air is largely controlled by postural adjustment. The increase in flipper exposure with Tbb provides evidence of behavioral thermoregulation and that flippers are major sites for heat loss in the New Zealand sea lion, as observed for other otariid species. Nonpostural thermoregulatory behaviors such as flipper waving and sand flipping increased with Tbb, and may provide additional means of dissipating heat. Total body surface areas of six sea lions ranged from 1.72 to 3.39 m2 (curvilinear length range from 1.60 to 2.35 m), and total flipper surface area averaged 22.7% of total body surface area. As otariids do not employ their hind limbs for aquatic propulsion, their role in behavioral thermoregulation may provide an explanation for the relatively large size of the hind flippers of the New Zealand sea lion.  相似文献

Biomechanical model assumptions affect the interpretation of the role of the muscle or joint moments to the segmental power estimated by induced acceleration analysis (IAA). We evaluated the effect of modeling the pelvis and trunk segments as two separate segments (8 SM) versus as a single segment (7 SM) on the segmental power, support of the body, knee and hip extension acceleration produced by the joint moments during the stance phase of normal walking. Significant differences were observed in the contribution of the stance hip abductor and extensor moments to support, ipsilateral knee and hip acceleration, and ipsilateral thigh and upper body power. The primary finding was that the role of the stance hip moment in generating ipsilateral thigh and upper body power differed based on degrees of freedom in the model. Secondarily, the magnitude of contributions also differed. For example, the hip abductor and extensor moments showed greater contribution to support, hip and knee acceleration in the 8 SM. IAA and segment power analysis are sensitive to the degrees of freedom between the pelvis and trunk. There is currently no gold standard by which to evaluate the accuracy of IAA predictions. However, modeling the pelvis and trunk as separate segments is closer to the anatomical architecture of the body. An 8 SM appears to be more appropriate for estimating the role of joint moments, particularly to motion of more proximal segments during normal walking.  相似文献

We checked on the supposition that the magnitude of postural reactions to an unexpected postural disturbance in upright stance in humans can be determined to a considerable extent by the level of background stiffness in the ankle joints. For this purpose, we estimated changes in the joint stiffness under different conditions of visual control; these values were estimated within the period of background body oscillations (i.e., before the beginning of a compensatory motor reaction) and compared with those in the course of postural reactions evoked by vibrational stimulation of the ankle (shin) muscles. Experiments were carried where the subjects stood with open and closed eyes (OE and CE, respectively) and while standing wearing spectacles with frosted glass passing only diffuse light (DL). In the course of the tests, the subjects stood in the usual comfortable vertical position (hereafter, standard stance) or in the same position but with the possibility to lightly touch an immobile object by a finger (stance with additional support). Such technique was used to weaken the effects of CE and DL on background sways of the body and to lead these sways close to the level typical of OE conditions. The joint stiffness was estimated using an approach based on frequency filtration of oscillations of the center of pressure of the feet (CPF) that allowed us to select signals proportional to displacements of the total center of gravity (CG) of the body and to calculate the difference between oscillations of the CPF and CG (a CPF-CG variable). The CPF-CG variable is proportional to the horizontal acceleration of the CG and, therefore, can be used for estimation of the changes in stiffness in the ankle joints. Under conditions of standard stance, the usual conditions rather similarly influenced both variables (CG and CPF-CG) in the course of both background body oscillations and a postural response. The examined variables were the greatest under CE conditions, decreased under conditions of perception of DL, and became smallest with OE. At standing with additional support, the dependence of the examined variables on visual conditions disappeared within the period of background body oscillations (before the beginning of postural reactions). In this case, the magnitude of oscillations of the CPF-CG variable under CE and DL conditions decreased to the level observed at standing under OE conditions. The magnitude of CG displacements induced by vibrational stimulations of the muscles remained, nevertheless, clearly dependent on visual conditions (the same regularities were observed as in the case of standing with no additional support). Thus, our findings demonstrate that the correlation between the characteristics of postural reactions in the upright stance and the level of ankle joint stiffness is not single-valued. Large eddy simulations (LESs) are performed to study the flow characteristics around two flight posture models of ski jumping. These models are constructed by three-dimensionally scanning two national-team ski jumpers taking flight postures. The drag and lift forces on each component of a ski jumper and skis (head with helmet and goggle, body, arms, legs and skis) and their lift-to-drag ratios are obtained. For the two posture models, the drag forces on the body, legs and skis are larger than those on the arms and head with helmet and goggle, but the lift forces on the body and skis are larger than their drag forces, resulting in high lift-to-drag ratios on the body and skis and low lift-to-drag ratio on the legs. We construct simple geometric models, such as the circular cylinder, sphere and thin rectangular plate, predicting the drag and lift forces on each component of a ski jumper and skis, and validate them with those obtained from LES. Using these geometric models, we perform a parametric study on the position angles of flight posture for higher total lift-to-drag ratio. The flight postures obtained increase the total lift-to-drag ratios by 35% and 21% from those of two base postures, respectively. Finally, LESs are performed for the postures obtained and show the increases in the total lift-to-drag ratios by 21% and 16%, respectively, indicating the adequacy of using the simple geometric models for finding a flight posture of ski jumping having a higher lift-to-drag ratio at low cost.  相似文献

Currently in the literature there is no consensus on which procedure for normalizing seated spine kinematics is most effective. The objective of this study was to examine the changes in the range of motion (ROM) of seated posture trials when expressed as a percent of maximum standing and seated ROM. A secondary purpose was to determine whether the typical maximum planar calibration movements (flexion, lateral-bend, and axial twist) elicited the respective maximum ROM values for each spine region versus postures with specific movement instruction. Thirteen male participants completed seven different movement trials. These consisted of the maximum planar movement trials, with the remaining four postures being combinations of specific lumbar and thoracic movements. Global and relative angles for the upper-thoracic, mid-thoracic, lower-thoracic, and lumbar regions were calculated and normalized to both a seated and standing reference posture. When normalizing both global and relative angles the standing reference appears optimal for flexion, twisting and lateral bend angles in all spine regions, with the exception of relative flexion angle in the mid-thoracic region. The maximum planar movement trials captured the greatest ROM for each global angle, relative lower-thoracic angle and relative lumbar flexion angle, but did not for all other relative angles in the upper-thoracic, mid-thoracic, and lumbar regions. If future researchers can only collect one reference posture these results recommend that a standing reference posture be collected for normalizing seated spine kinematics, although a seated reference posture should be collected if examining relative flexion angles at the mid-thoracic region.  相似文献

This study was conducted to analyze the unimpaired control of the trunk during walking. Studying the unimpaired control of the trunk reveals characteristics of good control. These characteristics can be pursued in the rehabilitation of impaired control. Impaired control of the trunk during walking is associated with aging and many movement disorders. This is a concern as it is considered to increase fall risk. Muscles that contribute to the trunk control in normal walking may also contribute to it under perturbation circumstances, attempting to prevent an impending fall. Knowledge of such muscles can be used to rehabilitate impaired control of the trunk. Here, angular accelerations of the trunk induced by individual muscles, in the sagittal and frontal planes, were calculated using 3D muscle-driven simulations of seven young healthy subjects walking at free speed. Analysis of the simulations demonstrated that the abdominal and back muscles displayed large contributions throughout the gait cycle both in the sagittal and frontal planes. Proximal lower-limb muscles contributed more than distal muscles in the sagittal plane, while both proximal and distal muscles showed large contributions in the frontal plane. Along with the stance-limb muscles, the swing-limb muscles also exhibited considerable contribution. The gluteus medius was found to be an important individual frontal-plane control muscle; enhancing its function in pathologies could ameliorate gait by attenuating trunk sway. In addition, since gravity appreciably accelerated the trunk in the frontal plane, it may engender excessive trunk sway in pathologies.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to quantify the load on the lumbar spine of subjects when they are asked to adjust from a slouched sitting posture into an upright posture with one of three different strategies: “free” (no instruction) and two coached patterns: “lumbopelvic” dominant and “thoracic” dominant. The activity of selected muscles and kinematic data was recorded from 20 volunteers while performing the three movement patterns to adjust sitting posture. Moments and forces at the lumbar spine were computed from an anatomically detailed model that uses kinematics and muscle activation as input variables.The lumbopelvic pattern produces less joint moment on the lumbar spine (on average 31.2 ± 3.9 N m) when compared to the thoracic pattern (43.8 ± 5.8 N m). However, the joint compression force was similar for these two patterns, but it was smaller in the free pattern, when no coaching was given (lumbopelvic: 1279 ± 112 N, thoracic: 1367 ± (125 N, free: 1181 ± 118 N). Lower thoracic erector muscle activity and higher lumbar erector activity were measured in the lumbopelvic pattern in comparison with the other two. In summary the lumbopelvic pattern strategy using predominantly the movement of anterior pelvic tilt results in smaller joint moments on the lumbar spine and also positions the lumbar spine closest to the neutral posture minimizing passive tissue stress. This may be the strategy of choice for people with low back flexion intolerance.  相似文献

Genetic diversity of 50 isolates of Neofusicoccum parvum, the predominant species of the Botryosphaeriaceae recovered from grapevines displaying symptoms of dieback and decline in New Zealand, was compared to that of isolates from Australia, South Africa, and California. The eight universally primed polymerase chain reaction (UP-PCR) primers distinguished 56 genotypes, with only four clonal pairs found. Seven main groups were identified in a neighbour-joining (NJ) tree with isolates from different regions and vineyards of New Zealand, Australia, and California distributed in different groups, indicating a high level of intra and intervineyard genetic variation. All of the South African isolates were positioned in a separate UP-PCR group, indicating that these isolates were less related to the other N. parvum isolates. When compared to fungi that reproduce sexually the genetic diversity and Shannon diversity indices were low (0.076-0.249; 0.109-0.367, respectively), genetic identity levels were high (0.76-0.95), and genetic distance levels were low (0.04-0.27). The large number of genotypes and the low number of clones in the New Zealand N. parvum populations may be explained by parasexual recombination as anastomosis was observed between nonself pairings. Pathogenicity tests using isolates from different UP-PCR groups inoculated onto either green shoots or 1-y-old grapevines detected virulence diversity, indicating intra and intervineyard variation between isolates, however, no correlation was detected between UP-PCR group and virulence.  相似文献

Understanding the evolutionary origins of hemispheric specialization remains a topic of considerable interest in a variety of scientific disciplines. Whether nonhuman primates exhibit population-level limb preferences continues to be a controversial topic. In this study, limb preferences for ascending and descending locomotion were assessed as a means of examining the hypothesis that asymmetries in forelimb bones might be attributed to asymmetries in posture. The results indicated that captive chimpanzees showed a population-level leftward asymmetry in descending locomotion but no group bias for ascending locomotion. The results are consistent with previous behavioral studies in captive chimpanzees as well as studies on skeletal asymmetries of the forelimbs of chimpanzees.  相似文献
