  1. Realized trophic niches of predators are often characterized along a one‐dimensional range in predator–prey body mass ratios. This prey range is constrained by an “energy limit” and a “subdue limit” toward small and large prey, respectively. Besides these body mass ratios, maximum speed is an additional key component in most predator–prey interactions.
  2. Here, we extend the concept of a one‐dimensional prey range to a two‐dimensional prey space by incorporating a hump‐shaped speed‐body mass relation. This new “speed limit” additionally constrains trophic niches of predators toward fast prey.
  3. To test this concept of two‐dimensional prey spaces for different hunting strategies (pursuit, group, and ambush predation), we synthesized data on 63 terrestrial mammalian predator–prey interactions, their body masses, and maximum speeds.
  4. We found that pursuit predators hunt smaller and slower prey, whereas group hunters focus on larger but mostly slower prey and ambushers are more flexible. Group hunters and ambushers have evolved different strategies to occupy a similar trophic niche that avoids competition with pursuit predators. Moreover, our concept suggests energetic optima of these hunting strategies along a body mass axis and thereby provides mechanistic explanations for why there are no small group hunters (referred to as “micro‐lions”) or mega‐carnivores (referred to as “mega‐cheetahs”).
  5. Our results demonstrate that advancing the concept of prey ranges to prey spaces by adding the new dimension of speed will foster a new and mechanistic understanding of predator trophic niches and improve our predictions of predator–prey interactions, food web structure, and ecosystem functions.

  1. Animal behavior is elicited, in part, in response to external conditions, but understanding how animals perceive the environment and make the decisions that bring about these behavioral responses is challenging.
  2. Animal heads often move during specific behaviors and, additionally, typically have sensory systems (notably vision, smell, and hearing) sampling in defined arcs (normally to the front of their heads). As such, head‐mounted electronic sensors consisting of accelerometers and magnetometers, which can be used to determine the movement and directionality of animal heads (where head “movement” is defined here as changes in heading [azimuth] and/or pitch [elevation angle]), can potentially provide information both on behaviors in general and also clarify which parts of the environment the animals might be prioritizing (“environmental framing”).
  3. We propose a new approach to visualize the data of such head‐mounted tags that combines the instantaneous outputs of head heading and pitch in a single intuitive spherical plot. This sphere has magnetic heading denoted by “longitude” position and head pitch by “latitude” on this “orientation sphere” (O‐sphere).
  4. We construct the O‐sphere for the head rotations of a number of vertebrates with contrasting body shape and ecology (oryx, sheep, tortoises, and turtles), illustrating various behaviors, including foraging, walking, and environmental scanning. We also propose correcting head orientations for body orientations to highlight specific heading‐independent head rotation, and propose the derivation of O‐sphere‐metrics, such as angular speed across the sphere. This should help identify the functions of various head behaviors.
  5. Visualizations of the O‐sphere provide an intuitive representation of animal behavior manifest via head orientation and rotation. This has ramifications for quantifying and understanding behaviors ranging from navigation through vigilance to feeding and, when used in tandem with body movement, should provide an important link between perception of the environment and response to it in free‐ranging animals.

The allometric relationships between canine base area, first molar and summed molar crown area, and the glabella–opisthocranion distance, and the direct allometric relationships between canine and molar size have been established in five primate taxa. Separate sex and combined sex ‘intraspecific’, and ‘interspecific’ regression and ‘best fit’ allometry coefficients were computed. This analysis showed that for any increase in glabella–opisthocranion length, the rate of increase in canine size exceeds the rate of increase in molar area, and ‘best fit’ solutions indicate that canine base area is positively allometric when related directly to molar crown area. These results were compared with data available for the ‘gracile’ australopithecine, A. africanus, and two ‘robust’ australopithecine taxa, A. boisei and A. robustus. The differences in canine and molar size which occur between the ‘gracile’ taxon and the two ‘robust’ taxa do not correspond to any of the trends in the comparative allometric models. Data on glabella–opisthocranion length for the fossils, meagre though they are, show that while the proportional increase in molar crown area between the taxa corresponds to comparative allometry models, the reduced canine size in the ‘robust’ taxa is against comparative allometric trends. These results indicate that, at least in terms of canine/molar proportions, the differences between the ‘gracile’ and ‘robust’ australopithecines are not merely allometric and may indicate significant dietary or behavioural differences.

Selectivity in the consumption of plant matter from the natural habitat by the tropidurid lizard Liolaemus lutzae, endemic to the beach habitats of restingas of southeastern Brazil, and the differences in the qualitative properties of the plants consumed were studied in the Barra de MaricÝ restinga, Rio de Janeiro State. The diets of 180 lizards were analysed and the plant species present in the stomachs and their frequencies were recorded. Only four of the 19 species which occur on the beach (Phylloxerus portulacoides, Althernantera maritima, Ipomoea littoralis and I. pes-caprae) were consumed by the lizard and their frequencies in the stomachs differed from that of occurrence. Analysis of the composition of the leaves of the 13 most abundant plant species indicated that the plants consumed by the lizards had the highest contents of water, total nitrogen, total sugar and the lowest amount of gross fibres. Thus, it appears that L. lutzae is not a generalist herbivore, but feeds selectively on those plants in its environment that are most easily digested and assimilated.

This study documents odontometric variation in four populations of related genetic background. It is found that the transplanted populations of Cuanalan and Saltillo have undergone significant microdifferentiation in tooth size relative to the two home valley populations. The extent and direction of this microdifferentiation is seen as reflecting differential amounts of admixture from African and European sources in demographic subunits of the two transplanted populations. The dental variables found to discriminate significantly between populations are the same variables predicted to be evolutionarily labile by Butler's Field Theory. Principal component analysis confirms the presence of morphological fields in these data and supports the position that each class has a stable tooth, with stability decreasing with increasing distance from the key tooth. The importance of hybridization in determining which variables significantly discriminate between populations is confounded by the effects of development of the dentition in morphogenetic fields. These data suggest the odontometric data provide an adequate, if somewhat conservative, base from which to evaluate microdifferentiation of human populations.

Summary The transverse velocity profiles of the anterograde flow of particles on the cell surface and around it are approximately parabolic. The peak velocity is recorded close to the membrane and the descendent arm of the profile is viscosity-dependent. It indicates that the extracellular forward flow is probably generated by a forward movement of the fluid fraction of the membrane itself. The retrograde component of extracellular movements is manifested by particles kept on the cell surface by adhesion, which behave exactly as the ectoplasmic layer on the opposite side of the membrane,i.e., they probably reflect the movement of that fraction of the surface material which is attached to the cortical microfilaments. In the longitudinal profile, the velocity of anterograde flow rises from the tail to the front of amoeba, but is generally related to the effective cell locomotion rate and not to the movements of any intracellular layer. Around the cells deprived of any attachment to the substratum, which cannot locomote but manifest vigorous intracellular movements, the anterograde flow ceases at least along 2/3 of their lenght. It persists, however, around the frontal fountain zone, where other particles still move backwards together with the retracted ectoplasmic layer. This indicates that the role of the forward flow of and on the cell surface is to compensate for: (1) the increase of the surface area in the frontal regions due to locomotion, (2) the withdrawal of a part of material which is hauled back by the retracting cortical layer. A comprehensive scheme of the velocity distribution within the different layers of a moving amoeba and around it has been constructed on the basis of present and earlier data.Study supported by the Research Project CPBP 04.01 of the Polish Academy of Science.I dedicate this paper to Professor K. Patterns of approximal wear in cheek teeth of a Romano-British population
The approximal surfaces of premolars and molars of 376 adult British-Romano skulls were examined for wear facets. The type of wear was designated as convex, concave, sigmoid, or flat, and the degree was categorised on a three-point scale. Concave wear facets were more frequently seen in the older age groups, but the type of wear was similar on right and left sides. Taking all teeth together or as individual tooth types, concave wear was significantly more likely on mesial rather than distal surfaces. The degree of wear was age related and similar on right and left sides in both males and females. It is suggested that the distribution of concave facets may be related to movements between adjacent teeth.

Simultaneous collections of drift and organisms moving either upstream or downstream in association with the substrate were made using a specially designed sampler. Samples were taken in a diel series along a transect across the study riffle of a Colorado foothills stream on six dates over an annual cycle. In addition to longitudinal movements, taxonomic composition and diel periodicity were evaluated. The insect-dominated fauna showed a net downstream displacement. Only the caddisflies Helicopsyche borealis and Hesperophylax occidentalis exhibited net upstream movement, primarily a result of low drift frequencies. The taxonomic composition of moving invertebrates differed from that of the benthos. Drift resembled downstream moving substrate-associated invertebrates in composition, but differed from that of the upstream directed fauna. Taxa collectively exhibited four types of diel patterns: 1) similar downstream (drift and substrate-associated movements) patterns, which generally differed from the upstream pattern; 2) similar benthic (upstream and downstream) patterns, which differed from that of drift; 3) aperiodic patterns; and 4) independent patterns for each type of directional movement. Analysis of size classes based on head capsule width for the mayfly Baetis tricaudatus showed significantly smaller size in stationary individuals compared with moving individuals in the population and revealed that nymphs moving during the day were smaller than those moving at night.

A hinge-bending domain movement has been postulated as an important part of the catalytic mechanism of phosphoglycerate kinase (PGK) (Bankset al., 1979). In order to test the role of the flexibility of a putative interdomain hinge in the substrate- and sulfate-induced conformational transitions, alanine-183 was replaced by proline using site-directed mutagenesis. The maximal velocity of the Ala 183Pro mutant, measured at saturating concentrations of ATP and phosphoglycerate (5 mM and 10 mM, respectively) and in the absence of sulfate ions, is increased approximately 21% in comparison to the wild type PGK. TheK m values for both substrates are essentially unchanged. The effect of sulfate on the specific activity of the Ala 183Pro mutant and the wild type PGK was measured in the presence of 1 mM ATP and 2 mM 3-phosphoglycerate (3-PG). A maximum activation of 70% was observed at 20 mM sulfate for the mutant enzyme, as compared to 130% activation at 30 mM sulfate for the wild type PGK. These results demonstrate that the increased rigidity of the putative hinge, introduced by the AlaPro mutation, does not impair catalytic efficiency of phosphoglycerate kinase, while it appears to decrease the sulfate-dependent activation. The differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) studies demonstrate an increased susceptibility of the Ala 183 Pro mutant to thermal denaturation. In contrast to one asymmetric transition observed in the DSC scan for the wild type PGK, withT m near 54°C, two transitions are evident for the mutant enzyme withT m values of about 45 and 54°C. Using a thermodynamic model for two interacting domains, a decrease in the free energy of domain-domain interactions of about 2 kcal was estimated from the DSC data.
