Summary From spring 1997 to winter 2000, the composition and structure of epibenthic bivalve clusters and patches on a backbarrier tidal flat of the East Frisian Wadden Sea were continoously analyzed. The studied bivalve aggregates developed from intense and approximately simultaneous spatfalls of Mytilus edulis and Cerastoderma edule in 1996, after a severe winter (1995/96) with 64 days of driftice coverage. Spatfall occurred on a bare sandy tidal flat, whereas adjacent shell layers situated at the southern margin of the spatfall site were not colonized. Usually, such shell layers are the most common secondary hard substrates in the backbarrier area favorable for initial settlement of Mytilus larvae. The shell layers predominantly originate from erosion of former Mya arenaria and C. edule populations. So far, the studied bivalve aggregates are composed of approximately equal proportions of living specimens of both species, M. edulis and C. edule. The incorporated cockles were prevented from burrowing into the rediment by the coherent byssal mesh. In contrast to the results of previous studies, the great bulk of epibenthic living C. edule did survive for several years within the clusters. Therefore, the common terms ‘Mytilus banks’, ‘Mytilus patches’ or ‘Mytilus clumps’ may be too general and may erroneously imply a dominance of (or mono-specific composition by) M. edulis. In the fossil record, i.e. in diagenetically consolidated shell layers, the enforced epibenthic life-mode of C. edule and the remarkable species composition as well as the temporal development of the aggregates would not be recognizable.  相似文献

Discoveries first published in 1986 did not fit the de rigueur working hypothesis that the clocks governing tide-associated rhythms had a fundamental period of 12.4 h, a value equal to the average interval between successive tides on most coastlines of the world. To explain the results a dual-clock schema was fashioned that envisioned two clocks, strongly coupled together 180° antiphase, each running at a basic rate of 24.8 h (the interval of a lunar day), as the driving agents of tide-associated rhythms (details are given in the text). This elaboration has been named the circalunidian-clock hypothesis, a hypocorism used in some armchair ruminations back in 1973. In the decade since 1986, a goodly amount of evidence has been garnered that is consistent with this hypothesis—suggesting that first-call divination appears to have been visionary. Acceptance of this hypothesis leads to further cerebration that a 24.8-h clock, its circa periods in constant conditions, and other properties—which fully overlap with our perception of the circadian clock that drives daily rhythms—may indicate that circadian and circalunidan timepieces are not different entities. The known properties of both daily and lunar clock-types are compared and contrasted, and, with the exception of one feature (for which there is at least a philosophical explanation), it is concluded that the same clock that drives tidal rhythms could also motor daily rhythms, i.e., there may be no such thing as a 12.4-h horologue.  相似文献

We determined which sensory and motor nerves mediate orientation to flow in the marine slug Tritonia diomedea, and tested the hypothesis that the slug orients to water flow by comparing the intensities of water flow stimulation on each side of its body. Lesion experiments revealed which nerves carried information necessary for flow orientation. The lateral branches of Cerebral Nerve # 2 were the only cerebral nerves necessary for flow orientation. Cutting all cerebral nerves except the lateral branches of Cerebral Nerve # 2 did not eliminate flow orientation. Thus, the lateral branches of Cerebral Nerve # 2 were both necessary and sufficient (among the cerebral nerves) for flow orientation. Denervation of one side of the head by cutting Cerebral Nerves # 1–4 on one side did not eliminate normal flow orientation. We have revised our model of how Tritonia diomedea orients to flow to allow for this unilateral determination of flow direction. Unilaterally cutting Pedal Nerve # 3, which contains many pedal motor axons, reduced turning toward that side, but did not affect final orientation to flow. Summary This report presents the results of taphofacies analyses of shelly cheniers (mollusk-dominated lag-concentrations) from the tidal flats of northeastern Baja California, Mexico. The three generations of moderm (formed during last 70 years), submodem (younger than 1,500 BP), and subfossil (5,000–2,000 BP) cheniers can be distinguished by their position relative to the shoreline, their topography, and the radiocarbon-age of their shells. The generations differ in the duration and complexity of their taphonomic history. Sixty-one samples from nine localities were collected to test the utility of the taphofacies approach for studying chenier-type shell deposits. The three chenier generations, although all dominated by the bivalve molluskMulinia coloradoensis, differ significantly in their taxonomic composition due to taphonomic and/or biologic factors. The taphofacies analysis included 4,334 specimens ofM. coloradoensis described by nine taphonomic variables. Univariate analysis of those variables indicated that the shells that accumulated in the cheniers are little-affected by biological processes (bioerosion, encrustation), and moderately affected by physical processes (fragmetation, cracking, peeling, edge preservation). Only the luster features of shells (external luster, internal luster, and internal features) vary substantially and consistently with chenier age —a result of subaerial weathering. Multivariate taphofacies analysis discriminates the three generations of cheniers even when the poorly preservable luster variables are excluded from the analysis. This suggests that taphofacies discrimination is possible for fossil cheniers. The shells collected from the chenier surface have substantially poorer preservation than shells from the subsurface, indicating that taphonomic degradation in the chenier plain environment is a surface phenomenon. Chenier plain shelly assemblages are taphonomically distinct from assemblages formed in other marine environments: they have a very low frequency of macroscopically recognizable bioerosion and encrustation. The existence of preservable taphonomic differences between the cheniers that differ in their age (i.e., duration of preburial history), suggests that fossil lag concentrations may be useful in detecting incompleteness gradients along stratigraphic boundaries. A ‘taphonomic clock’—a correlation between a ‘time-sincedeath’ and shell preservation—was found only for luster features, taphonomic attributes that are unlikely to be preserved in the fossil record.  相似文献

A new species of poecilostomatoid copepod, Hemicyclops spinulosus, is described from burrows of the ocypodid crab Macrophthalmus japonicus in an estuarine mud-flat in Tokyo Bay. The new species can be distinguished from its congeners by a combination of the segmentation and setation of first antenna, the ornamentation of maxilliped and the modified seta on the first segment of the endopod of legs 1–4. Liquid ventilation using perfluorochemicals (PFC) offers clear theoretical advantages over gas ventilation, such as decreased lung damage, recruitment of collapsed lung regions and lavage of inflammatory debris. This paper presents the control of a total liquid ventilator (TLV) dedicated to ventilate patients with completely filled lungs with a tidal volume of perfluorochemical liquid. The two independent piston pumps are volume controlled and pressure limited. Measurable pumping errors are corrected by a programmed supervisor module, which modifies the inserted or withdrawn volume. Pump independence also allows easy FRC modifications during ventilation. The prototype was tested on eight healthy term newborn lambs (<5 days old).  相似文献

Synopsis Spatial distribution and feeding habits of the puffer fish,Takifugu niphobles, were studied to understand its mode of resource utilization in an intertidal sand flat at Tomioka in the western coast of Kyushu Island, Japan. The transect survey during high tides showed the presence of young puffers near the shoreline, while adults were mainly found in the offshore area of the sand flat. The gut contents analysis showed that although the young puffers foraged more frequently on organisms dwelling in the inshore area than the adults, both puffers fed mainly on the ghost shrimpCallianassa japonica inhabiting the entire sand flat. There was no apparent difference in the size of consumedC. japonica between the young and adult puffers. However, comparison of size structures of ghost shrimps in the field and in the gut contents showed that the young puffers foraged both from inshore and offshore areas of the sand flat, while the adults foraged mainly in the offshore area. This suggests that young puffers move more frequently over the sand flat with tides than adult ones. This pattern of trophic separation among size classes may reflect environmental features of the intertidal sand flat with large tidal fluctuations.  相似文献
