Adaptations to particular stresses may occur only in populations experiencing those stresses or may be widespread within a species. Nickel hyperaccumulation is viewed as an adaptation to high-Ni (serpentine) soils, but few studies have determined if hyperaccumulation ability is restricted to populations from high-Ni soils or if it is a constitutive trait found in populations on both high- and low-Ni soils. We compared mineral element concentrations of Thlaspi montanum var. montanum plants grown on normal and high-Ni greenhouse soils to address this question. Seed sources were from four populations (two serpentine, two non-serpentine) in Oregon and northern California, USA. Plants from all populations were able to hyperaccumulate Ni, showing Ni hyperaccumulation to be a constitutive trait in this species. Populations differed in their ability to extract some elements (e.g., Ca, Mg, P) from greenhouse soils. We noted a negative correlation between tissue concentrations of Ni and Zn. We suggest that the ability to hyperaccumulate Ni has adaptive value to populations growing on non- serpentine soil. This adaptive value may be a consequence of metal-based plant defense against herbivores/pathogens, metal- based interference against neighboring plant species, or an efficient nutrient scavenging system. We suggest that the Ni hyperaccumulation ability of T. montanum var. montanum may be an inadvertent consequence of an efficient nutrient (possibly Zn or Ca) uptake system.  相似文献

Migration of wild and cultivated juvenile honmoroko Gnathopogon caerulescens of from the spawning and nursery areas in Lake Biwa were investigated, both in the Ibanaiko Lagoon and its outlet to Daido River, using beam‐trawl surveys in 2013 and 2014. The study demonstrated migration of G. caerulescens from a nursery lagoon toward Lake Biwa after the juvenile stage. These findings appear to be the first direct evidence for migration of an exclusively pelagic cyprinid species from a littoral nursery to a pelagic adult habitat in a large deep lake.  相似文献

The potential contribution of early spring feeding conditions in the Arctic to clutch size variation was examined in a population of Lesser Snow Geese Anser caerulescens caerulescens. Behavioural observations were combined with energetic analyses of food material to derive an estimate of the energy budgets of pre-laying and laying females. Food intake of females between arrival on the breeding grounds and incubation was considerable; estimated energy gains in this period were in the same magnitude as the cost of one or several eggs. The pre-laying period spent on the breeding grounds can thus be energetically beneficial rather than costly. Accumulation of resources for reproduction in Snow Geese is a continual process including the breeding grounds, and nutrient limitation after arrival in the Arctic cannot sufficiently explain the environmental component of clutch size variation. The timing of migration and follicle development is such that clutch size decisions are sometimes made during the late stages of migration and some-times after arrival. In the latter case food conditions on the breeding grounds may greatly influence clutch size; in the former case they may still influence readjustments of clutch size after the initial decision. The universal negative correlation between clutch size and laying date in Snow Geese can be explained by negative fitness consequences of late hatching, which outweigh the benefits of delayed laying and further nutrient accumulation. Food shortage on the breeding grounds may sometimes be a secondary factor contributing to seasonal clutch size decline.  相似文献

Thlaspi caerulescens is a metallophyte that is able to hyperaccumulate Zn. In the present study the subcellular compartmentation of Zn was investigated in roots and leaves of this species by means of X-ray microanalysis. Leaves accumulated higher average Zn concentrations than roots. In roots of plants exposed to 10 μM Zn, Zn concentrations in the apoplast were similar to those in vacuoles, while in plants treated with 100 μM Zn considerably higher Zn concentrations were detected in vacuoles than in the apoplast. In epidermal and sub-epidermal cells of leaves of plants from both treatments, Zn mainly accumulated in vacuoles and, to a lesser extent, in the apoplast. In vacuoles from plants exposed to 100 μM Zn, high Zn concentrations were associated with variable amounts of P, Ca and K. In leaves, the highest Zn concentrations (13,600 μg g?1 d.m.) were found in globular crystals present in many vacuoles of epidermal and subepidermal cells. Smaller deposits with a variable Zn concentration between 1,000 and 18,300 μg g?1 d.m. were observed in the epidermal and subepidermal cells of roots. Both the high Zn/P element ratios found in the crystals and the absence of Mg indicate that, in contrast to other plant species, myo-inositol hexaphosphate (phytate) is not the main storage form for Zn in Thlaspi caerulescens.  相似文献

The practical applicability of heavy metal (HM) phytoextraction depends heavily on its duration. Phytoextraction duration is the main cost factorfor phytoextraction, both referring to recurring economic costs during phytoextraction and to the cost of the soil having no economic value during phytoextraction. An experiment is described here, which is meant as a preliminary feasibility test before starting a phytoextraction scheme in practice, to obtain a more realistic estimate of the phytoextraction duration of a specific HM-polluted soil. In the experiment, HM-polluted soil is mixed at different ratios with unpolluted soil of comparable composition to mimic the gradual decrease of the HM content in the target HM-polluted soil during phytoextraction. After equilibrating the soil mixtures, one cropping cycle is carried out with the plant species of interest. At harvest, the adsorbed HM contents in the soil and the HM contents in the plant shoots are determined. The adsorbed HM contents in the soil are then related to the HM contents in the plant shoots by a log-log linear relationship that can then be used to estimate the phytoextraction duration of a specific HM-polluted soil. This article describes and evaluates the merits of such a feasibility experiment. Potential drawbacks regarding the accuracy of the described approach are discussed and a greenhouse-field extrapolation procedure is proposed.  相似文献

为了解药用植物菥蓂(Thlaspi arvense)在紫外线(UV-B)辐射增强下生长及响应规律,以2月龄菥蓂幼苗为研究对象,在自然光照基础上人工增补3.26 μW·cm-2(T1)和9.78 μW·cm-2(T2)2种不同辐射强度处理,以自然光照下生长的菥蓂幼苗为对照,研究菥蓂幼苗中光合指标和叶绿素荧光参数、光合色素(叶绿素a和b)含量、渗透调节物质(丙二醛、可溶性蛋白、可溶性糖和脯氨酸)含量、抗氧化酶(超氧化物歧化酶、过氧化物酶、过氧化氢酶和抗坏血酸过氧化氢酶)活性和总黄酮、总酚和黑芥子苷等次生代谢产物含量对不同UV-B辐射强度的响应。结果表明:2种辐射强度下净光合速率、气孔导度、蒸腾速率、胞间二氧化碳摩尔分数、最大荧光(Fm)、PSⅡ最大光化学效率(Fv /Fm)和PSⅡ潜在光化学效率(Fv /Fo)均随辐射强度增大而降低;叶绿素a和叶绿素b、可溶性蛋白、可溶性糖和脯氨酸等渗透调节物质、超氧化物歧化酶、过氧化物酶、过氧化氢酶和抗坏血酸过氧化氢酶活性、总酚和黑芥子苷等次生代谢产物含量均随辐射时间增加呈现先增加后降低的趋势,而总黄酮含量则呈逐渐增加的趋势,在辐射未期与对照差异显著(P<0.05)。根据研究结果综合分析,在不同辐射强度下,菥蓂通过提高总黄酮和总酚含量的合成、可溶性蛋白和可溶性糖的积累,以及叶绿素含量、超氧化物岐化酶、过氧化物酶和抗坏血酸过氧化氢酶活性的增加,抵抗紫外胁迫对其造成的影响,进而菥蓂表现一定的抗性和对逆境环境的适应性,这为菥蓂抗逆性培育和进一步利用提供理论基础。  相似文献

Thlaspi arvense, a wild species from the Brassicaceae family, was shown to have a higher level of freezing tolerance than either of its close relatives, the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana or the crop Brassica napus (canola). Over 600 clones were sequenced from a subtractive cDNA library generated from cold treated T. arvense tissue, establishing that T. arvense shared significant sequence identity with both A. thaliana and B. napus (90–92%). In light of the strong sequence similarity between T. arvense and A. thaliana and to exploit the available genomics resources for Arabidopsis, the efficacy of using long 70 mer oligonucleotide whole genome Arabidopsis microarrays was tested for T. arvense. Gene expression in T. arvense leaf tissue during the very early stages of cold acclimation (or cold stress) was assayed at three time points and compared to an untreated control. This analysis highlights some of the difficulties and benefits of using cross-species microarray analysis. The data suggested that T. arvense responds in a similar fashion to cold stress as the model plant A. thaliana. However, for a number of genes quantitative differences in the level and timing of expression were identified. One of the most notable differences suggested that sulphur assimilation leading to the increased production of the methyl donor S-adenosyl-methionine was playing a role in the response of T. arvense to cold stress. The two main features of plant hyper-accumulator species are the massive translocation of heavy metal ions to the aerial parts and their tolerance to such high metal concentrations. Recently, several lines of evidence have indicated a role for nicotianamine (NA) in metal homeostasis, through the chelation and transport of NA-metal complexes. The function of transport of NA-metal chelates, required for the loading and unloading of vessels, has been assigned to the Yellow Stripe 1 (YSL)-Like family of proteins. We have characterized three YSL genes in Thlaspi caerulescens in the context of hyper-accumulation. The three YSL genes are expressed at high rates compared with their Arabidopsis thaliana homologs but with distinct patterns. While TcYSL7 was highly expressed in the flowers, TcYSL5 was more highly expressed in the shoots, and the expression of TcYSL3 was equivalent in all the organs tested. In situ hybridizations have shown that TcYSL7 and TcYSL5 are expressed around the vasculature of the shoots and in the central cylinder in the roots. The exposure to heavy metals (Zn, Cd, Ni) does not affect the high and constitutive expression of the TcYSL genes. Finally, we have demonstrated by mutant yeast complementation and uptake measurements that TcYSL3 is an Fe/Ni-NA influx transporter. This work provides therefore molecular, histological and biochemical evidence supporting a role for YSL transporters in the overall scheme of NA and NA-metal, particularly NA-Ni, circulation in a metal hyper-accumulator plant.  相似文献
