In sexual reproductive systems, the number of sexes is generally binary, viz. male and female. Several theoretical studies have shown that the evolution of this system is possibly related to cytoplasmic DNA, including deleterious cytoplasmic symbionts. When organisms are infected by a symbiont that is transmitted vertically to offspring via gametes, the exclusion or degeneration of the latter may evolve as a characteristic of those organisms. If this necessarily results in the elimination of organelle DNA in gametes, a reciprocal preference between individuals, one transmitting organelles and the other not, may be favored. In this theoretical study, factors affecting such an evolutionary process, in which the symbiont is considered as a parasite infecting vertically, horizontally and naturally, are considered. In addition, host individuals are assumed to recover from the infection to some degree. According to the analysis, a binary sex system can evolve only when uninfected and infected host individuals co-exist in a single host population. This condition can be satisfied only if natural infection occurs. Although recovery from infection has both positive and negative effects on binary sex evolution, the latter is promoted only when natural infection exists. Accordingly, if natural infection does not exist, the evolution of binary sex system is unlikely with respect to deleterious cytoplasmic symbionts, in absent of heterozogotic advantage in vertical transmission.  相似文献

1,4-Benzoquinone, coenzyme Q 0 and Q 10 were reacted with a series of hydrogen donors in the ESR cavity in the presence or absence of UVA irradiation. The signals of the radicals generated from the hydrogen donors or of those of the semiquinones were detected. The reaction mechanism was interpreted by a hydrogen atom transfer instead of the usual electron transfer mechanism on the basis of the redox potentials of the reactants and the Marcus theory. The hydrogen atom transfer is explained by the excited triplet state of quinones, which, on the basis of quantum mechanic calculations, may be reached even under visible light. In some cases, hydrogen atom transfer was also observed without irradiation, although to a lesser extent.  相似文献

Stepping-stone models for the ecological dynamics of metapopulations are often used to address general questions about the effects of spatial structure on the nature and complexity of population fluctuations. Such models describe an ensemble of local and spatially isolated habitat patches that are connected through dispersal. Reproduction and hence the dynamics in a given local population depend on the density of that local population, and a fraction of every local population disperses to neighboring patches. In such models, interesting dynamic phenomena, e.g. the persistence of locally unstable predator-prey interactions, are only observed if the local dynamics in an isolated patch exhibit non-equilibrium behavior. Therefore, the scope of these models is limited. Here we extend these models by making the biologically plausible assumption that reproductive success in a given local habitat not only depends on the density of the local population living in that habitat, but also on the densities of neighboring local populations. This would occur if competition for resources occurs between neighboring populations, e.g. due to foraging in neighboring habitats. With this assumption of quasi-local competition the dynamics of the model change completely. The main difference is that even if the dynamics of the local populations have a stable equilibrium in isolation, the spatially uniform equilibrium in which all local populations are at their carrying capacity becomes unstable if the strength of quasi-local competition reaches a critical level, which can be calculated analytically. In this case the metapopulation reaches a new stable state, which is, however, not spatially uniform anymore and instead results in an irregular spatial pattern of local population abundance. For large metapopulations, a huge number of different, spatially non-uniform equilibrium states coexist as attractors of the metapopulation dynamics, so that the final state of the system depends critically on the initial conditions. The existence of a large number of attractors has important consequences when environmental noise is introduced into the model. Then the metapopulation performs a random walk in the space of all attractors. This leads to large and complicated population fluctuations whose power spectrum obeys a red-shifted power law. Our theory reiterates the potential importance of spatial structure for ecological processes and proposes new mechanisms for the emergence of non-uniform spatial patterns of abundance and for the persistence of complicated temporal population fluctuations.  相似文献

We develop a probabilistic model for the binding of a small linear polymer to a larger chain. We assume that we can approximate the energy of interaction of the two chains by summing the pairwise interactions between subunits. Because the energy of interaction between a pair of subunits can depend on neighboring subunits, which we assume vary along the chain, we assign the pairwise energies of interactions according to a specified probability distribution. Thus we develop a statistical model for the binding of two molecules. While such models may not be appropriate for studying the interaction of a particular pair of molecules, they can provide insight into questions that deal with populations of molecules, such as why do MHC molecules bind peptides of a certain size? Here we analyze in detail the special case of a heterodimer binding to a polymer.  相似文献

The forward diffusion equation for gene frequency dynamics is solved subject to the condition that the total probability is conserved at all times. This can lead to solutions developing singular spikes (Dirac delta functions) at the gene frequencies 0 and 1. When such spikes appear in solutions they signal gene loss or gene fixation, with the "weight" associated with the spikes corresponding to the probability of loss or fixation. The forward diffusion equation is thus solved for all gene frequencies, namely the absorbing frequencies of 0 and 1 along with the continuous range of gene frequencies on the interval (0,1) that excludes the frequencies of 0 and 1. Previously, the probabilities of the absorbing frequencies of 0 and 1 were found by appeal to the backward diffusion equation, while those in the continuous range (0,1) were found from the forward diffusion equation. Our unified approach does not require two separate equations for a complete dynamical treatment of all gene frequencies within a diffusion approximation framework. For cases involving mutation, migration and selection, it is shown that a property of the deterministic part of gene frequency dynamics determines when fixation and loss can occur. It is also shown how solution of the forward equation, at long times, leads to the standard result for the fixation probability.  相似文献

Human and animal trails on steep hillsides often exhibit dramatic switchbacks and shortcuts. Helbing et al. have recently examined the emergence of human trail systems on flat terrains while Minetti and Margaria established the effect of gradients on human metabolic efficiency. In this paper we use these ideas to develop a semi-quantitative theoretical model of the behaviour of humans moving on a terrain with relief. The model determines the direction of movement by minimising metabolic cost per unit of distance in a desired direction. The structure of the theory resembles the Landau Theory of Phase Transitions, much used in theoretical physics. We find that both hairpin bends (switchbacks) and shortcuts appear as efficient strategies for downhill walkers, while uphill walkers retain switchbacks. For weakly inclined slopes, the best strategy involves walking directly uphill or downhill. For sufficiently steep slopes, however, we find that the best strategy should undergo a transition to a broken symmetry solution corresponding to the switchback trail patterns typical of rugged environments. The critical slope at which this transition takes place should be less steep for uphill and downhill walkers. The theory should be amenable to empirical investigation. Amongst other applications, this model will enable us to generalize the work of previous authors to real landscapes, eventually permitting the reconstruction of ancient patterns of movement in archaeological landscapes.  相似文献

2-Indolcarbohydrazones 128 were synthesized and evaluated for their α-glucosidase inhibitory potential. A varying degree of inhibitory potential with IC50 values in the range of 2.3 ± 0.11–226.4 ± 6.8 μM was observed while comparing these outcomes with the standard acarbose (IC50 = 906.0 ± 6.3 μM). The stereochemistry of ten (10) randomly selected compounds (1, 3, 6, 8, 12, 18, 19, 23, 25 and 28) was predicted by Density Functional Theory (DFT). The stability of E isomer was deduced by comparing the calculated and experimental vibration modes of νCO, νNC and νCH (CH in NCH-R). It was observed that except compound 18, all other compounds were deduced to have E configuration while molecular modeling studies revealed the key interactions between enzyme and synthesized compounds.  相似文献
