Water stress,temperature, and light effects on the capacity for isoprene emission and photosynthesis of kudzu leaves 总被引:21,自引:0,他引:21
Kudzu (Pueraria lobata (Willd) Ohwi.) is a vine which forms large, monospecific stands in disturbed areas of the southeastern United States. Kudzu also emits isoprene, a hydrocarbon which can significantly affect atmospheric chemistry including reactions leading to tropospheric ozone. We have studied physiological aspects of isoprene emission from kudzu so the ecological consequences of isoprene emission can be better understood. We examined: (a) the development of isoprene emission as leaves developed, (b) the interaction between photon flux density and temperature effects on isoprene emission, (c) isoprene emission during and after water stress, and (d) the induction of isoprene emission from leaves grown at low temperature by water stress or elevated temperature. Isoprene emission under standard conditions of 1000 mol photons·m-2·s-1 and 30°C developed only after the leaf had reached full expansion, and was not complete until up to two weeks past the point of full expansion of the leaf. The effect of temperature on isoprene emission was much greater than found for other species, with a 10°C increase in temperature causing a eight-fold increase in the rate of isoprene emission. Isoprene emission from kudzu was stimulated by increases in photon flux density up to 3000 mol photons·m-2·s-1. In contrast, photosynthesis of kudzu was saturated at less than 1000 mol·m-2·s-1 photon flux density and was reduced at high temperature, so that up to 20% of the carbon fixed in photosynthesis was reemitted as isoprene gas at 1000 mol photons·m-2·s-1 and 35°C. Withholding water caused photosynthesis to decline nearly to zero after several days but had a much smaller effect on isoprene emission. Following the relief of water stress, photosynthesis recovered to the prestress level but isoprene emission increased to about five times the prestress rate. At 1000 mol photons·m-2·s-1 and 35°C as much as 67% of the carbon fixed in photosynthesis was reemitted as isoprene eight days after water stress. Leaves grown at less than 20°C did not make isoprene until an inductive treatment was given. Inductive treatments included growth at 24°C, leaf temperature of 30°C for 5 h, or witholding water from plants. With the new information on temperature and water stress effects on isoprene emission, we speculate that isoprene emission may help plants cope with stressful conditions. 相似文献

Diurnal variations of amino acids and organic acids in xylem fluid from Lagerstroemia indica: an endogenous circadian rhythm 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Diurnal variations in the concentrations of major organic compounds occurred in xylem fluid extracted from Lagerstroemia indica L. The concentration of amino acids and the N/C ratio was at a maximum and that of organic acids was at a minimum between 1230 and 2030 h. Since the concentrations of total organic nitrogen, total amino acids and most individual amino acids (but not organic acids or sugars) were also proportional to xylem tension two experiments were performed to discern whether variations in chemistry were a consequence of diurnal changes in moisture stress. In the first experiment, L. indica , exposed to variable levels of moisture stress during midday, manifested an increase in organic acids and a reduction in the N/C ratio. In the second experiment, chemical profiles of xylem fluid were collected and compared for plants exposed to a natural photoperiod, constant darkness or continuous light at noon and midnight. After 1 day amino acids increased in concentration during midday for all treatments; the variation was greatest (10-fold) for plants in constant darkness where xylem tension varied from 0.20 to 0.25 MPa. Only plants exposed to continuous light lost a diurnal rhythm after 3 days. Thus, the circadian rhythm was endogenous, terminated in continuous light and was not mediated by changes in moisture stress. Oxalis regnellii Mig. is a trifoliate plant, and the three leaflets usually show synchronized up and down movements with a circadian period of 26–27 h. The three leaflets can also perform desynchronized ultradian oscillations, and we report on such rhythms under different conditions. A study of the occurrence of ultradian leaf movement rhythms as a function of irradiance is presented. At an irradiance of approximately 1 μW cm−2 , the occurrence was maximal and ca 30%. The periods varied from 5 to 15 h. Four other cases of ultradian rhythms in different conditions are also presented. In one case spontaneous ultradian rhythms occurred, and in another, two of the leaflets showed ultradian rhythms when the third leaflet had received a light pulse. In two more cases, the three leaflets on a leaf were separated by physical cuts along the petiole between the pulvini; in both cases the period was approximately 5 h. Possible mechanisms to explain the ultradian rhythms in Oxalis regnelli are discussed. 相似文献

Goldfish Carassius auratus were acclimated to either 10 or 30°C for a minimum of 5 weeks. A 65-kDa protein specific to warm-temperature-acclimated fish was extracted from the gel with 70% formic acid after two-dimensional electrophoresis of the muscle cytoplasmic protein fraction. The 65-kDa protein thus prepared to homogeneity was used to raise specific antibodies in rabbit by conventional methods. The antibody produced exhibited specific reaction with a protein having the same molecular weight from brain and liver tissue, suggesting that the 65-kDa protein is a ubiquitous cytosolic component in warm-acclimated goldfish. When water temperature was increased from 20 to 30°C over a 20-h period, a prominent amount of the 65-kDa protein was observed in muscle tissue extracts within 5 days of additional rearing; this was demonstrated by immunoblotting with the specific antibody. The N-terminal amino acid sequence of the 65-kDa protein was determined as Asp-Glu-Pro-Gln-Gly-His-Gln-His (or Asp)-Glu-Leu, differing from that of a family of known heat-shock proteins having about 70 kDa in molecular mass (hsp 70). No interaction between ATP and the 65-kDa protein revealed by ATP-agarose affinity chromatography further confirmed the different properties of the 65-kDa protein from those of hsp 70.Abbreviations ATP

Latitudinal gradients of tree species composition along the Sierran/Cascade axis in northern California were explored by comparing forests of Lassen Volcanic and Yosemite National Parks, USA. A calibration procedure based on canonical correspondence analysis predicted a mean rate of elevational displacement of 172.1 m/° latitude for Lassen sites in Yosemite. This is a steep latitudinal gradient compared with other temperate uplands (which average around 100 m/0 latitude), but it corresponds with the magnitude of the July mean temperature gradient (143 m/0 latitude) and the annual precipitation gradient (230 m/0 latitude). Elevational displacement of basal-area weighted species means showed considerable variation. The range for montane species was 20–153 m/0 latitude; for subalpine species the range was 142–305 m/0 latitude. This disparity is related to differential temperature lapse rates between regions and is reinforced by contrasting biogeographic affinities of montane vs. subalpine species. Whereas it is uniformly hot and dry during the growing season at lower elevations in both regions, growing seasons in the subalpine zone are significantly warmer and drier (at comparable elevations) in Yosemite, the more southerly locale. Furthermore, montane species are principally of Sierran affinity, whereas subalpine are primarily of Pacific Northwestern affinity. 相似文献

Homing to a more or less permanent scar after each foragingexcursion is a common movement pattern among intertidal gastropodsand chitons; however, details of the timing and spacing of foragingactivity have been investigated only in a few species. The presentstudy analyzes the short-term behavior of the limpet Patellarustica along the Tyrrhenian coast, Italy, using a motographictechnique to assess the fine organization of its foraging duringfavorable periods of sea roughness. P. rustica becomes activeonce the upper midlittoral is well splashed. It alternates foragingexcursions and resting at home with a periodicity slightly longerthan 12 h, suggesting a tidal-diel pattern. However, periodogramanalysis of the sea level oscillations during the study periodsrevealed no such rhythmicity because tidal oscillations werehidden by irregular variations caused by waves. As a resultof this time partitioning, limpets move, on average, less than50% of their potential activity time. Time partitioning maybe highly adaptive in reducing potential risks. Nevertheless,in the absence of clear external driving cues, the significanceof a very regular and apparently tidal pattern, fairly synchronousamong the different specimens, remains to be explained. Theactivity of P. rustica during each excursion is organized intothree parts: the outgoing journey during which grazing activityprogressively increases, a central part characterized by intensegrazing, and the return characterized by fast displacement anda more or less consistent trail following. Limpets head forrandom directions to reach foraging grounds in successive excursions,showing only a slight avoidance of the direction taken duringthe previous outward journey. The genetic relationship between vegetative growth at low temperatures and productivity was investigated for strawberries grown in controlled and field environments. Genotypes from 20 biparental crosses were grown in controlled environments with 11°, 14°, and 17 °C days, 11 °C nights, and 11-h daylength to simulate a range of winter growing conditions expected in mediterranean environments. Individual plants were scored for two initial runner traits and eight vegetative growth traits. Significant main effects of temperature and cross were detected for all growth chamber traits, and conservative estimates of the broad sense heritability (h2) for these traits were 0.10–0.28. None of the temperature x cross interaction effects were significant, suggesting that genetic potential for vegetative growth and vigor is expressed similarly at low and optimal growing temperatures. Highly significant genetic correlations were detected between many growth chamber trait pairs, indicating pleiotropic effects for the genes that condition these traits. Complementary field trials were established, and individual plants were scored for traits that describe yield, production pattern, and plant size. Significant negative genetic correlations were detected between traits that describe growth in the chambers and early production in the field trials, but genetic correlations between chamber growth traits and mid-season or total production were significantly positive and occasionally large. Several of the yield and field growth variables were genetically correlated to initial runner plant traits, suggesting that indirect selection using traits scored in the nursery can be used to improve yield and modify production pattern in the field. 相似文献

The coupling mechanism between weakly coupled two optic lobe circadian pacemakers in the cricket Gryllus bimaculatus was investigated by recording the locomotor activity, under light-dark cycles with various lengths, after the optic nerve was unilaterally severed. The activity rhythm split into two components under the light cycles different from 24 h: one was readily entrained to the light cycle and the other only loosely entrained or freeran. Additional removal of the optic lobe on the intact side resulted in a loss of the entrained component and that on the blinded side caused the reverse effect, indicating that the entrained component was driven by the pacemaker on the intact side and the other by the one on the blinded side. The synchronization between the two components was achieved only in light cycles with a limited length between 23 and 25 h. Without this range, the desynchronization of the components occurred. In the split rhythm, the phase-dependent modulation of the period of freerunning component and the mutual suppression of locomotor activity during the subjective day phase were clearly observed. The suppression was also evident in the lights-on peak that was the masking effect of light. The light cycle with dim light significantly reduced the ratio of animals with the pacemaker coupling as well as the magnitude of the period modulation. These results suggest (1) that the mutual coupling is achieved only when the difference in the periods between the two pacemakers is within an allowable range, (2) that the photic information is also involved in the mechanism of mutual coupling, and (3) that the suppression of activity occurs at the regulatory center for locomotion.Abbreviations CT
