Increasing plant diversity in agroecosystems (i.e. intercropping) has been widely accepted as a means of promoting conservation biological control of mites and insect pests. Nevertheless, the contribution from underlying mechanisms such as the provision of non‐prey alternative food (i.e. pollen and nectar) and shelter have not been properly disentangled; and additionally, it remains unexplored whether the performance of nocturnal and diurnal natural enemies is improved when provided with diverse plant communities. Using open field experiments and a greenhouse microcosm, we investigated whether intercropping collards with parsley could create shelter for natural enemies in the lower stratum (parsley), and whether or not nocturnal and diurnal natural enemies would carry out aphid biological control equally well in this increased plant diversity scenario (intercropping). The results showed that the shelter alone provided by the lower stratum/companion plants (parsley) mediated an increase in the abundance of natural enemies without involving the provision of non‐prey alternative food. However, the biological control of aphids exerted by nocturnal predators was negatively affected by intercropping. The lower stratum (parsley) appeared to hamper the ability of nocturnal predators to reach aphids more quickly on the collard host plants (higher stratum). In total, our findings indicate that intercropping non‐flowering companion plants is likely enough to mediate an increase of natural enemies via shelter provision. In addition, the results suggest that nocturnal predators, or non‐flying predators for that matter, are hampered by complex lower stratum vegetation. Thus, considering natural enemy behaviour and plant characteristics when designing polyculture systems are vital for attaining conservation biological control success. 相似文献

We compared the response to resource enhancement of a simple empirical model of intra‐guild predation (IGP) to the predictions of published, simple mathematical models of asymmetric IGP (a generalist IG Predator that feeds both on a specialist IG Prey and a Resource that it shares with the IG Prey). The empirical model was a food‐web module created by pooling species abundances across many families in a speciose community of soil micro‐arthropods into three categories: IG Predator (large predatory mites), IG Prey (small predatory mites), and a shared Resource (fungivorous mites and springtails). By pooling abundances of species belonging to broadly defined functional groups, we tested the hypothesis that IGP is a dominant organizing principle in this community. Simple mathematical models of asymmetric IGP predict that increased input of nutrients and energy to the shared Resource will increase the equilibrium density of Resource and IG Predator, but will decrease that of IG Prey. In a field experiment, we observed how the three categories of the empirical model responded to two rates of addition of artificial detritus, which enhanced the food of fungivores, the Resource of the IGP module. By the experiment''s end, fungivore densities had increased ~1.5× (ratio of pooled fungivore densities in the higher‐input treatment to plots with no addition of detritus), and densities of IG Predators had increased ~4×. Contrary to the prediction of mathematical models, IG Prey had not decreased, but instead had increased ~1.5×. We discuss possible reasons for the failure of the empirical model to agree with IGP theory. We then explore analogies between the behavior of the empirical model and another mathematical model of trophic interactions as one way to gain insights into the trophic connections in this community. We also propose one way forward for reporting comparisons of simple empirical and mathematical models. 相似文献

Plants use volatile organic compounds to attract invertebratepredators and parasitoids of their herbivore pests. Recently,it has been suggested that plants, either through visual orolfactory cues, may also "cry for help" from vertebrate predatorssuch as birds. We show that in a laboratory choice test, passerinebirds (Parus major and Cyanistes caeruleus) were attracted tothe intact branches of trees (Betula pendula) suffering fromfoliar damage caused by herbivore larvae (Epirrita autumnata)in nontest branches. Species, age, or sex of the experimentalbird or lighting (ultraviolet [UV] or non-UV) did not affectthe preference. However, the birds made a clear choice betweenthe treatments when the trees came from a forest patch receivingmore sunlight, whereas no obvious choice was observed when thetrees came from a shadier forest patch. Results of the choicetest were supported by the spectral reflectance of tree leaves. In the sunnier forest patch, control trees reflected more visiblelight than the herbivore trees, whereas no such difference wasfound in the shadier forest patch trees. We suggest that avianpredators use their vision within visible wavelengths to findinsect-rich plants even when they do not see the prey itemsor damaged leaves. 相似文献

Predation by introduced mammals is decimating New Zealand's indigenous fauna. Understanding factors that influence this process allows resources for predator control to be applied with maximum effect. This study examines how predation of a secondary prey species (a relatively common but declining native plover, the banded dotterel Charadrius bicinctus ) varied with reductions in abundance of a major prey source (rabbits), kill-trapping of predators, nest density and habitat complexity. Banded dotterels mostly nest in open braided riverbeds alongside a number of endemic threatened species. We measured the fate of 753 dotterel clutches exposed to predation by cats, ferrets and hedgehogs. We found key times and places of high predation risk. Immediately after widespread reduction in rabbit populations by rabbit haemorrhagic disease (RHD), clutch predation rates were almost as high (mean, 50%) as those recorded during past rabbit poisoning programmes (mean, 57%). Both rates were significantly higher than the mean predation rate of 22% without rabbit control, suggesting a shift in predator diet immediately after rabbit population declines. Unlike after rabbit poisoning, clutch predation rate remained high in the years after RHD. Other patterns observed included higher clutch predation rate where nest density was lower, suggesting that predation can potentially cause local extinction. Clutch predation was also higher along riverbed margins where vegetation was dense. There was equivocal evidence for an effect of predator kill-trapping on clutch predation rate. Management strategies that could potentially reduce clutch predation risks include focusing predator mitigation measures during periods of rabbit decline, maintaining them for more than one breeding season if the rabbit declines are widespread (e.g. RHD epidemics), and applying greater effort at sites with relatively low nest density and along riverbed margins where predator use is more frequent. 相似文献

The abundance of pelagic invertebrate predators in relation to turbidity and depth gradients in Lake Hiidenvesi (southern
Finland) were studied. In the shallow (<5 m) and the most turbid (up to 75 NTU) part of the lake, the community of invertebrate
predators consisted of cyclopoid copepods (max biomass >500 μg dw l−1) and Leptodora kindtiii (Focke) (17 μg dw l−1), while in the less turbid (10–40 NTU) stratifying area Chaoborus flavicans (Meigen) dominated (max 146 μg dw l−1). In the temporarily stratifying and moderately turbid basin Chaoborus and small-bodied invertebrate predators co-existed. Mysis relicta (Lovén) occurred only in the stratifying area (max 15 μg dw l−1). The results suggested that both water depth and turbidity contributed to the community structure of Chaoborus flavicans. Depth great enough for stratification was of special importance and its effect was amplified by elevated turbidity, while
high turbidity alone could not maintain chaoborid populations. Mysis relicta also requires a hypolimnetic refuge but is more sensitive to low oxygen concentrations and may therefore be forced to the
epilimnion where it is vulnerable to fish predation. Cyclopoids as rapid swimmers can take advantage at elevated turbidity
levels and coexist in high biomass with fish even in shallow water. Leptodora kindtii can form high biomass despite planktivorous fish providing that turbidity exceeds 20 NTU. The results demonstrated that depth
and water turbidity can strongly regulate the abundance and species composition of invertebrate predators. These factors must
thus be taken into account when applying food web management, which aims to reduce phytoplankton biomass by depressing planktivorous
fish. 相似文献

Seed predation may reduce recruitment in populations that are limited by the availability of seeds rather than microsites.
Fires increase the availability of both seeds and microsites, but in plants that lack a soil- or canopy-stored seed bank,
post-fire recruitment is often delayed compared to the majority of species. Pyrogenic flowering species, such as Telopea speciosissima, release their non-dormant seeds more than 1 year after fire, by which time seed predation and the availability of microsites
may differ from that experienced by plants recruiting soon after fire. I assessed the role of post-dispersal seed predation
in limiting seedling establishment after fire in T. speciosissima, in southeastern Australia. Using a seed-planting experiment, I manipulated vertebrate access to seeds and the combined cover
of litter and vegetation within experimental microsites in the 2 years of natural seed fall after a fire. Losses to vertebrate
and invertebrate seed predators were rapid and substantial, with 50% of seeds consumed after 2 months in exposed locations
and after 5 months when vertebrates were excluded. After 7 months, only 6% of seeds or seedlings survived, even where vertebrates
were excluded. Removing litter and vegetation increased the likelihood of seed predation by vertebrates, but had little influence
on losses due to invertebrates. Microsites with high-density vegetation and litter cover were more likely to have seed survival
or germination than microsites with low-density cover. Recruitment in pyrogenic flowering species may depend upon the release
of seeds into locations where dense cover may allow them to escape from vertebrate predators. Even here, conditions suitable
for germination must occur soon after seed release for seeds to escape from invertebrate predators. Seed production will also
affect recruitment after any one fire, while the ability of some juvenile and most adult plants to resprout after fire buffers
populations against rapid declines when there is little successful recruitment. 相似文献

All "chick-a-dee" calls are not created equally. Part II. Mechanisms for discrimination by sympatric and allopatric chickadees 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The 'chick-a-dee' call, common to all members of the genus Poecile, is used by both sexes throughout the year to putatively co-ordinate flock movements and register alarm. In some regions, two or more chickadee species occupy overlapping territories, and therefore it is essential that these sympatric species learn to discriminate between the acoustically similar calls of the species. Previous work from our laboratory has shown that black-capped (P. atricapillus) and mountain chickadees (P. gambeli) discriminate between the species' calls and treat each species' calls as belonging to separate open-ended categories. In the current set of experiments we use an operant conditioning paradigm to gain an understanding of (1) how the birds perform this discrimination and (2) whether birds with different levels of experience with heterospecific calls perform this task differently. We use natural recordings of chick-a-dee calls and perform several manipulations to test the importance of the introductory 'chick-a' portion and the terminal 'dee' portion for discriminating among the calls of the two species. Evidence suggests that birds mainly use the terminal 'dee' portion, as all groups of birds responded similarly to these probe stimuli and control chick-a-dee calls. We propose that the terminal 'dee' portion, consisting of lower frequency notes, is more likely to be resistant to degradation, and therefore a more reliable species-specific marker. 相似文献

Abstract: Experiments were conducted in the laboratory and in greenhouses. Of three neem preparations sprayed upon eggs, only neem oil (NO) exerted a negative impact on the hatching rate of Coccinella septempunctata and Chrysoperla carnea . First instar larvae of Episyrphus balteatus proved to be highly susceptible, when feeding 24 h on aphids sprayed with neem kernel water extract (NKWE). First instar larvae of C. septempunctata showed a very high mortality when feeding on aphids sprayed with different neem preparations. Aphid feeding and live span was reduced. When NKWE had been applied to the soil, the mortality of larvae of E. balteatus and C. septempunctata were lower, when feeding on aphids. Second instar larvae of C. septempunctata were far less susceptible when feeding 48 h on neem-sprayed aphids than first instars; the time of their development was prolonged, and aphid consumption reduced. Larvae of C. carnea proved to be less susceptible, when feeding on neem-sprayed aphids, than E. balteatus and C. septempunctata . In C. carnea , however, significant influences were also observed in aphid consumption, time of development, mortality, longevity, and rate of deformity. NO, containing a very low concentration of azadirachtin A, had stronger negative effects than NeemAzal-T/S® , in all observations. In the parasitoid Diaeretiella rapae , NKWE application to the soil induced negative reactions, when aphids on these plants were parasitized: low percentage parasitization, lowered mummy weight, low emergence rate of adults of F1 and even of F2. Foliar sprays of NKWE had less severe effects in this parasitoid species. The results are discussed with regard to their theoretical and practical significance. 相似文献

The plausibility of sympatric speciation has long been debated among evolutionary ecologists. The process necessarily involves
two key elements: the stable coexistence of at least two ecologically distinct types and the emergence of reproductive isolation.
Recent theoretical studies within the theoretical framework of adaptive dynamics have shown how both these processes can be
driven by natural selection. In the standard scenario, a population first evolves to an evolutionary branching point, next,
disruptive selection promotes ecological diversification within the population, and, finally, the fitness disadvantage of
intermediate types induces a selection pressure for assortative mating behaviour, which leads to reproductive isolation and
full speciation. However, the full speciation process has been mostly studied through computer simulations and only analysed
in part. Here I present a complete analysis of the whole speciation process by allowing for the simultaneous evolution of
the branching ecological trait as well as a continuous trait controlling mating behaviour. I show how the joint evolution
can be understood in terms of a gradient landscape, where the plausibility of different evolutionary paths can be evaluated
graphically. I find sympatric speciation unlikely for scenarios with a continuous, unimodal, distribution of resources. Rather,
ecological settings where the fitness inferiority of intermediate types is preserved during the ecological branching are more
likely to provide opportunity for adaptive, sympatric speciation. Such scenarios include speciation due to predator avoidance
or specialization on discrete resources.

In many fishes, individuals prefer to associate with phenotypically similar or conspecific individuals (conspecific cueing).
Such phenotypic segregation can be an important evolutionary driver, for example, in intralacustric sympatric speciation processes.
I examined conspecific cueing in two species of sympatric pupfish from Laguna Chichancanab in southern Mexico: the little
shoaling and highly territorial Cyprinodon beltrani and the highly shoaling but non-territorial C. simus. Females were tested for shoal species preferences in two testing scenarios: (1) a sequential choice test where shoals of
four conspecific or four heterospecific (Cyprinodon sp. or Poecilia reticulata) females were presented in succession, and (2) a simultaneous choice test where female shoals of both Cyprindon species were presented concurrently. Overall, higher shoaling in C. simus was corroborated in this study. In the sequential test, no effect of the type of stimulus shoal (con- or heterospecific)
on shoaling behavior was detected. In the simultaneous tests, C. beltrani, but not C. simus females showed a preference for the conspecific shoal. It seems possible that C. simus females did not evolve species recognition mechanisms because no other Cyprinodon species in the Laguna Chichancanab shows equally high shoaling, which automatically leads to the formation of single-species
(i.e., C. simus-) shoals. C. simus males do not establish long-term territories, but rather spawn within shoals, whereas C. beltrani females approach males in their breeding territories to spawn. I discuss that this behavioral difference still provides a
powerful reproductive isolation mechanism even in the absence of conspecific cueing in C. simus. 相似文献
