Diatom assemblages of sediments obtained from three sites on Kushiro Moor were analyzed to investigate the Holocene sedimentary
history. The results showed that: 1) The Takkobu site was originally at the bottom of the paleo-Kushiro Bay, and after-wards
the paleo-Takkobu Lagoon developed, became sealed off, and changed to a freshwater lake. The succession to peat moor probably
began about 2000 yr B.P. at the Takkobu site. 2) The Tsurui site was originally at the bottom of the paleo-Kushiro Bay, then
changed to the paleo-Kushiro Lagoon and became peat moor as a result of the first Holocene regression, which finished about
3600 yr B.P. The site then returned to a brackish lake again, probably due to the second Holocene transgression between 3600
and 3000 yr B.P., thereafter passing through brackish lake and freshwater lake stages, and eventually becaming peat moor at
about 2000 yr B.P., 3) At the Chuo site, the second paleo-Kushiro Bay developed again as a result of the second Holocene transgression,
which finished about 3000 yr B.P. Thereafter, brackish or freshwater lakes, rivers, and then peat moor developed in the central
area of Kushiro Moor. 4) The second marine diatom zone (MD2 Zone), which indicates the second Holocene transgression, complete by about 3000 yr B.P., is detected only at the Chuo site

ABSTRACT.
- 1 There is a narrow hybrid zone between two chromosomal races of the grasshopper Podisma pedestris (L.) in the French Alps.
- 2 There are no gross differences in habitat across the zone, and a multivariate analysis of the vegetation composition detected no significant transition either.
- 3 The hatch and development rates of Podisma in hybrid populations were lower than those found in matched habitat types outside the zone.
- 4 The simplest explanation for the persistence of the parapatric distribution of the two races is that hybrid disadvantage is maintaining a tension zone between them.

Kallar grass is a highly salt-tolerant grass grown as a pioneer plant on alkaline, salt-affected soils in Pakistan. Nitrogen-fixing bacteria and kallar grass were found to be in close association, which was even root-zone specific: rhizoplane and endorhizosphere were colonized by two different populations. Among theAzospirillum isolates originating from the root surface, some were of a new species, now namedA. halopraeferens. To study plant-bacterium interactions, this natural kallar grass association was chosen. The possible role of bacterial chemotaxis and oxygen tolerance are discussed. 相似文献

Field enrichments with nitrate in two spring-fed drainage lines within the riparian zone of a small woodland stream near Toronto, Ontario showed an absence of nitrate depletion. Laboratory experiments with riparian substrates overlain with nitrate enriched solutions revealed a loss of only 5–8% of the nitrate during 48 h incubation at 12°C. However, 22–24% of the initial nitrate was depleted between 24 and 48 h when a second set of substrate cores was incubated at 20°C. Short-term (3 h) incubations of fresh substrates amended with acetylene were used to estimate in situ denitrification potentials which varied from 0.05–3.19 g N g–1 d–1 for organic and sandy sediments. Denitrification potentials were highly correlated with initial nitrate content of substrate samples implying that low nitrate levels in ground water and riparian substrates may be an important factor in controlling denitrification rates. The efficiency of nitrate removal in spring-fed drainage lines is also limited by short water residence times of < 1 h within the riparian zone. These data suggest that routes of ground water movement and substrate characteristics are important in determining nitrate depletion within stream riparian areas. 相似文献

A diurnal vertical migration of larvae of Chaoborus punctipennis (Say) was observed in shallow temporary woodland pools in East Texas. In the laboratory, in 153 cm tall columns, the larvae underwent a much greater migration than possible in the shallow pools. We hypothesize that the migratory behavior and transparent body of Chaoborus larvae may have originally evolved in such shallow water habitats. Summary There are many contradictory observations on the mechanohydraulic relation of growing higher plant cells and tissues. Graphical analysis of the simultaneous equations which govern irreversible wall yielding and water absorption has made more comprehensive the understanding of this relation when relative growth rate is plotted against turgor pressure. It suggests that some respiration-dependent and auxin sensitive process might regulate the difference of osmotic potential between cells and water source. Based on anatomical and electrophysiological knowledge of the pea stem xylem, we propose the wall canal system as the mechanism of respiration-dependent water uptake which is sensitive to auxin. This system consists of the xylem apoplastic walls, the xylem proton pumps, active solute uptake system and cell membranes. In the simplest case, third-order simultaneous differential equations are involved. Numerical analysis showed that net uptake of solutes enables water to be taken up against an opposing gradient of water potential. The behaviour of this wall canal system describes well the mechano-hydraulic relation of enlarging plant cells and tissues. Recent typical, but incompatible, interpretations of this relation are critically discussed based on our model.Abbreviations V

We have made an extensive allozyme survey of 21 enzyme and protein loci in populations of the alpine grasshopper Podisma pedestris. This species occurs in two races, differing by a chromosomal fusion which separates the ancestral XO/XX race from a derived neo-XY race. These races also differ in DNA content, and hybrids between them have reduced viability. Electrophoresis reveals that the amount of genetic differentiation between these races is no greater than the variation among populations within each race. Both larger-scale surveys and a detailed survey of an area where the races hybridize, show that the chromosomal change is not correlated with gene frequency changes at any of the 21 loci studied. These findings are consistent with recently developed theory concerning the strength of the barrier to gene flow posed by a hybrid zone with characteristics such as those measured experimentally in Podisma. It is argued that hybrid zones in other species which involve allozymic differences do so because of stronger selection against hybrids rather than through mating isolation. 相似文献
