Background
Sex steroids can positively affect the brain and from this it would follow that high levels of sex steroids could be associated with better cognitive function in older men and women.Methods
This Healthy Ageing Study sample comprised of 521 older participants (51% women) without dementia at baseline, with an age range from 64 to 94 years. Testosterone and sex hormone binding globulin were measured using the automated Immulite 2000 and analyzed in association with baseline memory, global cognitive function and decline (assessed using the Mini-Mental Status Examination or MMSE) and controlling for potential confounds such as age, education, vascular disease, smoking, diabetes, thyroid function, and body mass index.Results
In healthy older men and women, optimal levels of testosterone were associated with better MMSE scores at baseline. Follow-up analyses indicated that in men, low testosterone levels (OR = .94, 95% CI = .88 to 1.00) were a risk factor for a sharp cognitive decline after 2 years, perhaps indicative of dementia. Associations were independent of covariates and baseline MMSE. Conversely, women at risk for a sharp drop in cognitive function showed some evidence for higher calculated free testosterone levels at baseline.Conclusions
Results replicate earlier cross-sectional findings that high levels of sex steroids are not associated with better cognitive function in older people. In men, age accelerated endocrinological change could be associated with dementia pathology.General significance

First-line antituberculosis (anti-TB) compounds have been considered as proven components of the Directly Observed Treatment-Short course (DOTS). Drug therapy against tuberculosis has been categorized as I, II, or III following the Revised National Tuberculosis Control Program guidelines. Anti-TB are drugs are quite common and show limited adverse effects. However, first-line anti-TB compounds mediated DOTS therapy and were found with several complications. Thus, those drugs have been discontinued. Therefore, the present study was designed to find out the possible impact of socioeconomic, income, and educational status on the adverse effects of drugs and their therapeutic episodes in patients targeted with a combination of tuberculosis intervention. This study found that an increased incidence of tuberculosis was found in patients who have finished high school, contributing to a high percentage of adverse effects. Notably, adverse events were shown maximally in poor patients compared with rich- or high-income patients. On the contrary, a high prevalence of adverse events was shown to be increased in partially skilled workers compared with full-skilled workers. Consequently, adversely considerable events were implicated to be raised in patients associated with minimal socioeconomic class. Metabolic Changes in Cerebral Cortex, Hippocampus, and Cerebellum During Sustained Bicuculline-Induced Seizures 总被引:7,自引:6,他引:1
Abstract— The objective of the present experiments was to study metabolic correlates to the localization of neuronal lesions during sustained seizures. To that end, status epilepticus was induced by i.v. administration of bicuculline in immobilized and artificially ventilated rats, since this model is known to cause neuronal cell damage in cerebral cortex and hippocampus but not in the cerebellum. After 20 or 120 min of continuous seizure activity, brain tissue was frozen in situ through the skull bone, and samples of cerebral cortex, hippocampus, and cerebellum were collected for analysis of glycolytic metabolites, phosphocreatine (PCr), ATP, ADP, AMP, and cyclic nucleotides. After 20 min of seizure activity, the two “vulnerable” structures (cerebral cortex and hippocampus) and the “resistant” one (cerebellum) showed similar changes in cerebral metabolic state, characterized by decreased tissue concentrations of PCr, ATP, and glycogen, and increased lactate concentrations and lactate/ pyruvate ratios. In all structures, though, the adenylate energy charge remained close to control. At the end of a 2-h period of status epilepticus, a clear deterioration of the energy state was observed in the cerebral cortex and the hippocampus, but not in the cerebellum. The reduction in adenylate energy charge in the cortex and hippocampus was associated with a seemingly paradoxical decrease in tissue lactate levels and with failure of glycogen resynthesis (cerebral cortex). Experiments with infusion of glucose during the second hour of a 2-h period of status epilepticus verified that the deterioration of tissue energy state was partly due to reduced substrate supply; however, even in animals with adequate tissue glucose concentrations, the energy charge of the two structures was significantly lowered. The cyclic nucleotides (cAMP and cGMP) behaved differently. Thus, whereas cAMP concentrations were either close to control (hippocampus and cerebellum) or moderately increased (cerebral cortex), the cGMP concentrations remained markedly elevated throughout the seizure period, the largest change being observed in the cerebellum. It is concluded that although the localization of neuronal damage and perturbation of cerebral energy state seem to correlate, the results cannot be taken as. evidence that cellular energy failure is the cause of the damage. Thus, it appears equally probable that the pathologically enhanced neuronal activity (and metabolic rate) underlies both the cell damage and the perturbed metabolic state. Patients with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) often display cognitive deficits. However, current epilepsy therapeutic interventions mainly aim at how to reduce the frequency and degree of epileptic seizures. Recovery of cognitive impairment is not attended enough, resulting in the lack of effective approaches in this respect. In the pilocarpine-induced temporal lobe epilepsy rat model, memory impairment has been classically reported. Here we evaluated spatial cognition changes at different epileptogenesis stages in rats of this model and explored the effects of long-term Mozart music exposure on the recovery of cognitive ability. Our results showed that pilocarpine rats suffered persisting cognitive impairment during epileptogenesis. Interestingly, we found that Mozart music exposure can significantly enhance cognitive ability in epileptic rats, and music intervention may be more effective for improving cognitive function during the early stages after Status epilepticus. These findings strongly suggest that Mozart music may help to promote the recovery of cognitive damage due to seizure activities, which provides a novel intervention strategy to diminish cognitive deficits in TLE patients. 相似文献

To understand the effects of HCN as potential mediators in the pathogenesis of epilepsy that evoke long-term impaired excitability; the present study was designed to elucidate whether the alterations of HCN expression induced by status epilepticus (SE) is responsible for epileptogenesis. Although HCN1 immunoreactivity was observed in the hippocampus, its immunoreactivities were enhanced at 12 hrs following SE. Although, HCN1 immunoreactivities were reduced in all the hippocampi at 2 weeks, a re-increase in the expression at 2-3 months following SE was observed. In contrast to HCN1, HCN 4 expressions were un-changed, although HCN2 immunoreactive neurons exhibited some changes following SE. Taken together, our findings suggest that altered expressions of HCN1 following SE may be mainly involved in the imbalances of neurotransmissions to hippocampal circuits; thus, it is proposed that HCN1 may play an important role in the epileptogenic period as a compensatory response. Excavation at the Ecuadorian highland site of La Florida in suburban Quito revealed six deep shaft tombs yielding high-status individuals (n = 9) as well as apparent sacrifices and other low-status individuals (n = 23). Determination of sex and age at death of the recovered skeletal remains resulted in a sample of 32 individuals aged from approximately 7 to 50 years of age. The sample of 18 individuals over the age of 18 years included 14 females and 4 males. Temporally, the remains are assigned to the Chaupicruz Phase (circa 100 to 450 AD) of the Regional Developmental Period. In this study, we analyze stable isotopes of carbon and nitrogen from human bone in order to compare the diets of the high- and low-status individuals. Stable carbon isotope analyses were carried out on preserved protein and biological apatite (bioapatite), and stable nitrogen isotope analyses were carried out on preserved protein. There is a statistically significant difference in δ13C between the two groups for both protein and mineral sources of carbon with evidence for the greater consumption of maize in the high-status group. There is no significant difference in δ15N between the two groups, nor is there a significant difference in the spacing between protein and mineral δ13C values between the two groups. Ethnohistorical evidence for the 16th century AD provides the expectation that the only dietary difference was the higher consumption of animal protein by the elite. There is no evidence for this based on the bone chemistry data from La Florida. Instead, the isotope data, along with the archaeological evidence, indicate that the major dietary difference during the Chaupicruz Phase was the greater intake of maize by the elite, probably in the form of beer (chicha). © 1995 Wiley-Liss, Inc. 相似文献

The IUCN Red List of Threatened Animals is an important conservation tool, but the accuracy of predictions about risks of
global extinction within 10 years or three generations is difficult to test objectively. In this study, we compare IUCN predictions
with the results of attempts to derive realistic scenarios that could lead to the global extinction of six species of long-lived
reptiles. For three species, the IUCN predictions matched real events reasonably well but still overestimated risks of global
extinction. For the other species, the predictions did not match real events. Reasons why disparities occur are discussed.

Chen)有4个自然居群和2个人工居群,个体数量分别为139和11棵;拟海桑(S. × gulngai N. C. Duke & B. R. Jackes)有4个自然居群和3个人工居群,个体数量分别为345和12棵;它们的自然居群更新能力都极差,人工种群也均未见新生个体。气候变化和人为干扰是种群规模急剧减小的直接原因,自身更新困难是种群规模难以恢复的制约因素。因此,建议在天然种群就地保护的基础上,优化迁地保护策略,加强人工辅助育种研究,加快突破育种难题,并科学抚育野外回归种群,以保证其种群的正常更新。 相似文献
