Analysis of the combined effects of allelochemicals on insect herbivores is useful because there may be adverse additive or even synergistic effects. Analysis of the simultaneous effects of temperature and alleochemicals is also necessary because these factors may interact. We examined the effects of three allelochemicals found in tomato (chlorogenic acid, rutin and tomatine) and thermal regime (21:10 °C and 26:15 °C, representing spring and summer respectively) on five insect herbivores (a Solanaceae specialist, Manduca sexta, and the polyphagous Heliothis virescens, Pseudoplusia includens, Spodoptera frugiperda and Trichoplusia ni). There were allelochemical interactions and thermal regime-allelochemical interactions for all species, and so the patterns were complex. In some cases, paired allelochemicals or the combination of three allelochemicals showed adverse additive effects on insect performance. But that was not always the case, and there were only a few examples of synergism. Negative effects of the allelochemicals were sometimes, but not always, damped by the cooler thermal regime. Comparing the growth rates of the five species in this study with those of a previous study (a total of seven species) revealed five patterns. For two of three pairs of closely-related species, the paired species had distinctly different patterns. For example, for H. virescens, tomatine prevented development and chlorogenic acid slowed growth, whereas for Helicoverpa zea, tomatine just slowed growth and the phenolics had little effect. The specialist Manduca sexta had a pattern that was midway between patterns of the generalists; it was not the most tolerant of the allelochemicals.  相似文献

Diapetimorpha introita(Cresson) (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae), a native ectoparasitoid ofSpodopteraspp. pupae, was reared in the laboratory on an artificial diet devoid of any insect host components. Diet-reared wasps demonstrated a propensity to search for and parasitize natural hosts in a field cage trial. Longevity of the diet-reared wasps was comparable with the longevity of wasps reared on host pupae. Survival rate ofD. introitawas 61.3% when reared on diet and 76.3% when reared on host pupae. Wasps reared on the artificial diet had longer developmental times, reduced fecundity, and reduced adult weights compared to wasps reared on host pupae. These studies suggest that future research efforts should focus on increasing fecundity and weight of diet-reared wasps and decreasing the mortality and developmental time of wasps reared on the artificial diet. The ability to rearD. introitaon an inexpensive, artificial diet significantly enhances the potential of mass rearing this parasitoid for inundative releases againstSpodopteraspp.  相似文献

Microplitis similis (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) is a solitary endoparasitoid of Spodoptera litura larvae (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae). Here, the effects of constant temperature (18, 21, 24, 27, 30, 33 and 36 °C) on the development and fecundity of M. similis developing in S. litura were studied in the laboratory to clarify the range of its potential distribution and better understand its potential as a biological control agent. The developmental duration of M. similis varied from 10.6 (33 °C) to 27.9 days (18 °C). The developmental threshold temperature and effective accumulative temperature of M. similis were 9.96 °C and 231.14 Degree-days, respectively. The average adult longevity of M. similis ranged from 5.1 (33 °C) to 26.8 days (18 °C). The maximum fecundity of the parasitoid was observed at 27 and 30 °C, which were 43.07 and 39.73 eggs, respectively. The minimum fecundity of the parasitoid was observed at 18 °C, which was 8.27 eggs. The intrinsic rate of increase (rm) and finite rate of increase (λ) of M. similis were the highest at 30 °C. The net reproduction rate (R0) was the highest at 27 °C and 30 °C, which were 44.34 and 40.39, respectively. We concluded that temperatures in the range 27–30 °C are the most suitable for development and reproduction of M. similis. Our study provides detailed basic information for development and reproduction of M. similis under different temperature conditions.  相似文献

The latent effects of precocenes I and II (PI and PH) and juvenile hormone I (JHI) when topically applied to the last three instars of Spodoptera littoralis (Boisd.) larvae have been studied. Application of both PI or PII resulted in morphogenetic abnormalities resemble some effects induced by administration of JHI, e.g., larval‐pupal intermediate, partial or severe cases of untanned pupae and imperfect moths. In PII‐treatments, the effect was instar‐dose‐dependent. The intermediate dose (55 μg) was more effective on S. littoralis larvae than other doses. The effectiveness of both doses of 40 or 70 μg in production of deformed larvae and pupae decreased when applied as repeated doses instead of single ones. In Pi‐treatments, the lower dose (25 μg) was more harmful to Spodoptera larvae than the higher dose (70 μg). Repeated application by either lower or higher doses did not enhance the production of imperfect insects. Application of JHI induced symptoms ranging from supernumerary instars, larval‐pupal intermediate, untanned pupae and deformed adults. The effect was dose‐dependent. In all tested compounds, there apparently was a latent or delayed effects. Although the insects were treated while they were larvae the complete effects were not apparent until after the insect had become a pupa or an adult. More efforts will be needed to understand how does precocene interferes with the process of tanning or sclerotization?  相似文献

Females of the cotton leafworm (Spodoptera littoralis) reared in long day conditions (LD 16:8 h) and mated to males kept throughout the whole period of development in continuous light (LL) oviposit very small numbers of mostly sterile eggs. It was found that in control males reared from the first larval instar in long day conditions there was a large accumulation of euperene sperm bundles in their testes on day 1 after imaginal moult. On day 10 of adult life the number of the sperm bundles was very small. In males kept from the first instar in continuous light there was also high number of sperm bundles on day 1 after imaginal moult but it did not decrease significantly on day 10 as was observed in controls. Transfer of different developmental stages of S. littoralis from long day conditions to continuous light resulted in a big difference in the density of eupyrene sperm bundles in their testes. In control insects reared through the whole of their development in long day conditions there was a significant decrease in the density of eupyrene sperm bundles on day 10 of adult life. By contrast, in males in continuous light, regardless of their developmental stage when transferred, there was either no change in density of sperm bundles in day 10 adults or there was a significant increase in comparison with day 1 adults. The highest density of eupyrene sperm bundles was observed in day 10 adults when they were transferred to continuous light shortly before moulting to the last instar (as day 4 larvae in the last stadium or day 1 pupae). Generally, the density of eupyrene sperm bundles on day 10 of adult development was about 2–2.5 times higher in males in continuous light then those under long day conditions. The results presented here indicate that the last larval instar and the pupa are the stages most sensitive to constant light treatment, which greatly reduces the amount of eupyrene sperm bundles released from the testes.  相似文献

Parasitoid wasps are widely used as biocontrol agents. For successful deployment, it is important to know how they search for and recognize their hosts. They often use chemical cues in host searching and recognition. Little attention has been paid to the use of physical cues, particularly when combined with chemical cues, though a combination of cues may improve searching efficiency. Chelonus inanitus L. (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) is a solitary, egg–larval parasitoid wasp that parasitizes various lepidopteran species, including serious crop pests. In this study, effects of physical and/or chemical cues on host recognition were investigated in C. inanitus by observing its antennal searching, ovipositor probing, and the duration of arrestment. In a physical cue test, egg-mass models with glass beads differing in size were used, and a single-egg model with a specific size of bead. Egg-mass models with beads of 0.4–1.0 mm in diameter arrested C. inanitus, in accordance with egg size and arrangement of the host. In a chemical cue test, extract from egg masses of the host Spodoptera litura (Fabricius) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), equivalent to half of a host egg mass and extract diluted 100-fold were used, and the undiluted extract stimulated C. inanitus. Untreated egg-mass models (0.2-mm-diameter glass beads) and diluted egg extract arrested C. inanitus less effectively; however, when glass beads were treated with the diluted extract, arrestment increased to the same degree as the undiluted extract. These results suggest that C. inanitus uses both physical and chemical cues to recognize eggs of its host, S. litura, and that these stimuli act synergistically.  相似文献

Abstract. Penultimate (fifth) and last (sixth) stadium larvae of Spodoptera mauritia Boisd. (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) of various ages were injected with 0.5 μg, 1 μg or 2 μg azadirachtin and the effects on moulting and larval-pupal transformation were analysed. Higher doses (1 μg and 2 μg) of azadirachtin induced a prolongation of the fifth stadium in larvae treated on day 0 and day 1. The resulting sixth stadium larvae failed to pupate. Sixth stadium larvae injected with 0.5 μg, 1 μg or 2 μg azadirachtin showed prolongation of sixth larval period. Azadirachtin treatments completely prevented normal pupation in 'day 0' and 'day 1' larvae even though the percentage of pupation increased in treated larvae of other age groups. Injection of 2 fig azadirachtin prevented normal pupation in larvae of all age groups. Injection of 4 μg ecdysterone to sixth stadium larvae pre-treated with 1 fig azadirachtin (on day 0) promoted normal pupation in the majority of animals.  相似文献

Summary Leaves of soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) and cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) were mechanically damaged with a single hole and offered to Spodoptera littoralis Boisd (Lep., Noctuidae) larvae in laboratory bioassays at intervals of between 0 and 7 days from damage. The subsequent within-leaf grazing patterns of damaged and undamaged areas were compared using an image-analysing computer, and estimations were made by eye of percentage, areas grazed at three spatial scales. Reduction in palatability of damaged areas of both plant species was detected, at time intervals ranging from 0 to 7 days after damage. This effect was strongest for the longer time intervals and the effect became weaker with increasing distance from the site of damage. These results are discussed in relation to possible defensive roles of wound-induced changes.  相似文献

Fern-feeding insects in Britain are mainly found on mature fronds in late summer. Six fern species (Dtyopteris filix-mas, D. dilatata, D. borreri, Phyllitis scolopendrium, Polyslkhum setiferum and Polypodium vulgare) were analysed for fibre, lignin, cellulose, tannins, cyanogenesis and thiaminase activity in an attempt to determine the biochemical basis for this seasonal pattern of attack. A bioassay was also carried out, using frond material incorporated in the diet of Spodoptera littoralis, to determine the effects of seasonal changes in fern toxins on a non-adapted, insect herbivore. The young fronds of all six species had a high protein content and low fibre-lignocellulose; protein levels decreased and cell wall materials increased as the fronds matured. Tannin concentrations and thiaminase activity showed a less consistent seasonal pattern. Tannins were present in the highest concentration in the young fronds of D. borreri, Polystichum and Polypodium and decreased with season; D. dilatata, Polystichum and Polypodium showed a similar pattern of thiaminase activity. The other species showed no strong seasonality in the levels of either tannins or thiaminase. No cyanogenic activity was detected in any of the fern species. Frond material from all six species decreased survivorship and growth rates of Spodoptera larvae. Larval performance and growth on diets containing fern material from young immature fronds was generally poorer than on diets containing material from mature fronds, collected later in the season. Neither tannin concentrations nor thiaminase activity levels closely corresponded to the observed interspecific and seasonal patterns of larval development and mortality, and other toxins must be involved. It is concluded that ferns are highly toxic to non-adapted herbivorous insects but the effects on adapted species are unknown. The restricted seasonal occurrence of a small number of insect species exhibiting specialized feeding habits suggests, however, that biochemical properties of the ferns determine this pattern of attack and limit the number of species which are able to exploit ferns as food resources.  相似文献
