Climatic and biogeographical associations of southern African dung beetles (Scarabaeinae, Coprinae) were analysed from a collection amassed between 1971 and 1986. Endemism to Africa south of 15°S was much greater in southwesterly climates (winter rainfall, bimodal spring/autumn rainfall, arid late summer rainfall) than to the north‐east in the moist, mid‐summer rainfall region. Major biogeographical groups centred to the south‐west comprised predominantly southern African endemics, Western/Eastern Cape coast, Karoo, Karoo/Namib, northern Namibia and the south‐western Kalahari. Biogeographical groups centred on the south‐eastern highlands and the subtropical east coast (mid‐summer rainfall) also comprised predominantly southern African endemics. All other major groups centred to the north‐east in the mid‐summer rainfall region comprised predominantly species with widespread tropical biogeographical affiliations, pan‐southern Africa but centred in the east, pan‐mid‐summer rainfall region, eastern mid‐summer rainfall region, tropical east Zimbabwe/central Moçambique, subtropical/tropical game reserves (non‐ruminant dung specialists). There were cross‐climatic differences in taxonomic composition of the fauna. Within the winter rainfall region, percentage species composition of Scarabaeinae was greater whereas that of the coprine tribe, Onthophagini, was lower than within the other three climatic regions. Percentage species richness of most other tribes of Coprinae differed little between most climates but that of Scarabaeinae declined from west to east (Canthonini, Scarabaeini), east to west (Sisyphini) or to either side of the late summer rainfall region (Gymnopleurini).  相似文献

1 The two most abundant cockchafer species in Europe, the forest cockchafer Melolontha hippocastani Fabr. and the European cockchafer Melolontha melolontha L., tend to form calamitous mass breedings with casual reports on sympatric and simultaneous occurrence. 2 Both species are known to use feeding‐induced green leaf volatiles (GLV) as primary attractants (sexual kairomones) for mate finding. The attractiveness of GLV is enhanced by the sex pheromones 1,4‐benzoquinone in M. hippocastani and toluquinone in M. melolontha. Phenol attracts males from both species. All three compounds are present in females of both species. 3 In the present study, it is confirmed that only male M. melolontha perform the typical swarming flight at dusk, as has already been shown for M. hippocastani. Furthermore, whether swarming Melolontha males were cross‐attracted to heterospecific females, and whether males could discriminate olfactorily between conspecific and heterospecific females, was tested in the field. 4 Males of both species preferred females when given the choice between females and males of the other species. However, they preferred conspecific females when females from both species were offered simultaneously. 5 The results suggest that species‐specific pheromone blends contribute to precopulatory reproductive isolation in sympatric populations of M. melolontha and M. hippocastani, but are not mutually exclusive or indispensable prerequisites for mate finding as in other insects.  相似文献

Abstract  This study surveys the population genetic structure of Childers canegrub, Antitrogus parvulus , to elucidate its population dynamics and gene flow. Antitrogus parvulus is a pest of sugarcane in the Bundaberg region and this knowledge can be used to optimise integrated pest management practices. Here, base-pair differences in the cytochrome oxidase II gene ( COII ) were used to characterise haplotypic diversity, infer levels of gene flow, and phylogenetic relationships of alleles and their phylogeographical structure. There were 28 unique haplotypes among the 70 sequenced individuals from the seven locations. All three variance components (among regions, among populations, within populations) are highly significant, with highest genetic diversity among regions and lowest among populations within regions. A positive correlation between migration rates and geographical distance and significant phylogeographical structure between four main geographical regions. The main implication of these findings for pest management is that if a grower can eliminate an existing infestation within a field, then reinvasion will be slow and further outbreaks within that field are unlikely to occur. The low dispersal ability of females also means that any resistance to insecticides that develops is likely to remain localised, but will rapidly become dominant within the affected population.  相似文献

Competitive interactions in northern temperate dung beetles are poorly understood. This investigation therefore comprises a series of field and experimental work on a dung beetle species common in northern Europe, Aphodius ater, with special focus on intraspecific competitive interactions. The between-pat distribution of adult A. ater in relation to the age of sheep dung pats was studied in the field. The distribution of both sexes was contagious in the fresh pats but became more regular with increasing pat age. The successional occurrence of males and females did not differ, but immature females tended to occur in fresh pats while mature females were mainly found in older pats. With increasing age of pats, the egg load of females also increased. Egg-laying behaviour of the beetles was studied in laboratory experiments. The mean number of eggs laid per female per dung pat decreased with increasing beetle density. Thus, density-dependent processes seem to regulate resource utilisation with regard to breeding behaviour, resulting in equal exploitation of the available pats. Survival and weight of recently hatched beetles decreased with increasing initial density of eggs. Hence, in A. ater, competition between larvae for food within pats does occur. Today, indigenous forests cover less than 0.6% of South Africa's land surface and are highly fragmented. Most forest relicts are very small and typically occur in fire‐protected gorges along the eastern Great Escarpment. Yet, they hold a unique and valuable fauna with high endemism and ancient phylogenetic lineages, fostered by long‐term climatic stability and complex microclimates. Despite numerous studies on southern African vegetation cover, the current state of knowledge about the natural extension of indigenous forests is rather fragmentary. We use an integrated approach of population‐level phylogeography and climatic niche modeling of forest‐associated chafer species to assess connectivity and extent of forest habitats since the last glacial maximum. Current and past species distribution models ascertained potential fluctuations of forest distribution and supported a much wider potential current extension of forests based on climatic data. Considerable genetic admixture of mitochondrial and nuclear DNA among many populations and an increase in mean population mutation rate in Extended Bayesian Skyline Plots of all species indicated more extended or better connected forests in the recent past (<5 kya). Genetic isolation of certain populations, as revealed by population differentiation statistics (), as well as landscape connectivity statistics and habitat succession scenarios suggests considerable loss of habitat connectivity. As major anthropogenic influence is likely, conservational actions need to be considered.  相似文献

Aim Using dung beetles (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Scarabaeinae) in a tropical land‐bridge island system, we test for the small island effect (SIE) in the species–area relationship and evaluate its effects on species richness and community composition. We also examine the determinants of species richness across island size and investigate the traits of dung beetle species in relation to their local extinction vulnerability following forest fragmentation. Location Lake Kenyir, a hydroelectric reservoir in north‐eastern Peninsular Malaysia. Methods We sampled dung beetles using human dung baited pitfall traps on 24 land‐bridge islands and three mainland sites. We used regression tree analyses to test for the SIE, as well as species traits related to local rarity, as an indication of extinction vulnerability. We employed generalized linear models (GLMs) to examine determinants for species richness at different scales and compared the results with those from conventional linear and breakpoint regressions. Community analyses included non‐metric multidimensional scaling, partial Mantel tests, nestedness analysis and abundance spectra. Results Regression tree analysis revealed an area threshold at 35.8 ha indicating an SIE. Tree basal area was the most important predictor of species richness on small islands (<35.8 ha). Results from GLMs supported these findings, with isolation and edge index also being important for small islands. The SIE also manifested in patterns of dung beetle community composition where communities on small islands (<35.8 ha) departed from those on the mainland and larger islands, and were highly variable with no significant nestedness, probably as a result of unexpected species occurrences on several small islands. The communities exhibited a low degree of spatial autocorrelation, suggesting that dispersal limitation plays a part in structuring dung beetle assemblages. Species with lower baseline density and an inability to forage on the forest edge were found to be rarer among sites and hence more prone to local extinction. Main conclusions We highlight the stochastic nature of dung beetle community composition on small islands and argue that this results in reduced ecosystem functionality. A better understanding of the minimum fragment size required for retaining functional ecological communities will be important for effective conservation management and the maintenance of tropical forest ecosystem stability.  相似文献

Tiphia vernalis Rohwer and Tiphia popilliavora Rohwer were introduced as biocontrol agents against Japanese beetles (Popillia japonica Newman) and oriental beetles (Anomala orientalis Waterhouse). Studies have shown that under field conditions, T. vernalis parasitize Japanese beetles more often than oriental beetles. This study was done to understand how tiphiid wasps handle the two different host species and the influence of host defensive behaviors on the oviposition process of tiphiid wasps. The preovipositional behaviors performed by Tiphia wasps included: stinging, examining, moving soil, kneading, host-feeding, and host scraping. The frequency, sequence, and total time spent on each behavior before oviposition were scored and compared between two host species. The sequence and frequency of preovipositional behaviors performed by both Tiphia wasps did not show a difference between the two host species. However, female T. vernalis spent significantly longer time trying to sting oriental beetles than Japanese beetles in order to paralyze them. The time T. popilliavora spent on prestinging behaviors did not show a difference between Japanese and oriental beetles. The defensive behaviors performed by Japanese and oriental beetle grubs included: vigorous movements, rubbing their abdomen or head against the wasp’s abdomen, and biting at the attacking wasp. The frequency and total time spent on each defensive behavior was scored and compared between two host species. Overwintered, third instar oriental beetle grubs spent significantly longer time on defensive behaviors when they were attacked by T. vernalis which likely cause wasps to spend longer time trying to sting oriental beetle grubs. The active host resistance gained through behavioral defenses could make oriental beetle grubs less susceptible to T. vernalis attack than Japanese beetle grubs, especially under field conditions. Younger grubs attacked by T. popilliavora did not exhibit these differences.  相似文献

Despite being the focus of an international research effort spanning decades, the spatial distribution of southern African scarab beetles remains poorly documented. As well as reinforcing the magnitude of the challenge facing biodiversity scientists, this raises real concerns about best practice conservation strategies in the absence of detailed distribution information. However, dung beetles appear to be well represented in established conservation areas. This apparent contradiction could be ascribed to anthropogenic transformation, successful conservation efforts, the presence of dung generalists and reserve-biased or mesic-biased dung beetle collection efforts. It is suggested that all of the above contribute to the observed pattern to varying degrees. The implications of selecting areas that are either rich in species, contain rare species or contain taxonomically distinct species from a group whose taxonomy is well known but for which inadequate distribution data exist are explored. Best practice, in the face of inadequate data, appears to revolve around a subtle interplay between advantages and disadvantages associated with data interpolation techniques, reserve selection algorithms that use criteria more robust than database rarity (such as taxonomic distinctiveness) and the long-term economic costs of proceeding with the data at hand versus investing in biological surveys.  相似文献
