Over recent years there have been substantial efforts to record and interpret the post-nesting movements of leatherback turtles (Dermochelys coriacea) breeding in tropical regions. Less well documented are the movements undertaken by individual turtles during the breeding season itself, or more specifically between sequential nesting events. Such movements are of interest for two reasons: (1) gravid female leatherbacks may range extensively into the territorial waters and nesting beaches of neighbouring countries, raising questions for conservationists and population ecologists; and (2) the magnitude of movements themselves help elucidate underlying reproductive strategies (e.g. whether to rest near to the nesting or forage extensively). Here, satellite relay data loggers are used (SRDLs) to detail the movements and behaviour of two female leatherback turtles throughout three consecutive inter-nesting intervals in the Commonwealth of Dominica, West Indies. Both near-shore residence and extensive inter-nesting movements were recorded, contrasting previous studies, with movements away from the nesting beach increasing towards the end of the nesting season. Using this behavioural study as a backdrop, the suitability of attaching satellite transmitters directly to the carapace was additionally explored as an alternative approach to conventional harness deployments. Specifically, the principal aims were to (1) gather empirical data on speed of travel and (2) assess dive performance (aerobic dive limit) to enable comparisons with turtles previously fitted with harnesses elsewhere in the Caribbean (n = 6 turtles; Grenada, WI). This produced mixed results with animals bearing directly attached transmitters travelling significantly faster (55.21 km day− 1; SD 6.68) than harnessed individuals (39.80 km day− 1; SD 6.19); whilst no discernable difference in dive performance could be found between the two groups of study animals.  相似文献

We report the first study to monitor ocelot (Leopardus pardalis) spatial patterns with Global Positioning System (GPS) telemetry. The study area was in southern Texas in areas of dense thornshrub (closed habitat) and open grasslands interspersed with small patches of dense thornshrub cover (open habitat). We used a 200-g GPS-Posrec collar (Televilt, TVP Positioning AB, Lindesberg, Sweden). We obtained 61% of GPS fixes from the ocelot GPS collar. The ocelot preferred closed habitat, even with GPS bias against closed habitat, and used small patches and corridors of dense thornshrub. Due to the success of this pilot study, we recommend that GPS telemetry be used to monitor ocelots.  相似文献

Satellite cells are tissue-specific stem cells responsible for skeletal muscle growth and regeneration. Although satellite cells were identified almost 50 years ago, the identity of progenitor populations from which they derive remains controversial. We developed MyoDiCre knockin mice, and used Cre/lox lineage analysis to determine whether satellite cell progenitors express MyoD, a marker of myogenic commitment. Recombination status of satellite cells was determined by confocal microscopy of isolated muscle fibers and by electron microscopic observation of muscle tissue fixed immediately following isolation, using R26R-EYFP and R26R (β-gal) reporter mice, respectively. We show that essentially all adult satellite cells associated with limb and body wall musculature, as well as the diaphragm and extraocular muscles, originate from MyoD+ progenitors. Neonatal satellite cells were Cre-recombined, but only a small minority exhibited ongoing Cre expression, indicating that most satellite cells had expressed MyoD prenatally. We also show that satellite cell development in MyoD-null mice is not due to functional compensation by MyoD non-expressing lineages. The results suggest that satellite cells are derived from committed myogenic progenitors, irrespective of the anatomical location, embryological origin, or physiological properties of associated musculature.  相似文献

During satellite-tracking investigations of 140 white storks (Ciconia ciconia), one individual, the long-term world record holder among birds, was followed along 12 migratory journeys over a period of 10 years. This long-term study confirms what previous several-year tracking studies of white storks had indicated: there can be great variability from year to year in the choice of winter quarters as well as in the routes and times of migration, intermediate destinations and stop-over periods, but constancy of winter quarters and migration routes is also possible. The variability may well be caused by external factors, of which food supply is probably predominant.Communicated by F. Bairlein  相似文献

The evolution of research into meteorological factors affecting the migration of the Cattle Egret (Ardeola ibis coromandus) in the southwestern Pacific region (Australia, New Zealand and the Tasman Sea) – from ground-based studies dependent on volunteer observers to a pilot satellite-tracking project – is reviewed and the results are related to the literature on bird migration. The predominant pattern is a seasonal migration from breeding colonies in southeast Queensland and northern New South Wales which takes place in stages along the east coastal plain under favourable meteorological conditions. Migration outward (southward) occurs in February through April and return to the breeding colonies occurs in October and November. Wintering destinations include Tasmania, southern Victoria and parts of New Zealand. Favourable meteorological conditions for migration southward include:moderate north to northwest airflow behind a high; light and variable winds in a high or col; and light and variable winds over New South Wales with moderate westerlies over Victoria and Tasmania. A satellite-tracking project helped to validate findings from the ground-based studies, provided additional information not otherwise obtainable, and demonstrated the potential of the technique to further clarify the relation between timing and staging of migration, and meteorology. The subspecies Chironomus thummi thummi and C. t. piger display dramatic differences in the copy number and chromosomal localization of a tandemly repeated DNA family (Cla elements). In order to analyze the evolutionary dynamics of this repeat family, we studied the organization of Cla elements in the related outgroup species C. luridus. We find three different patterns of Cla element organization in C. luridus, showing that Cla elements may be either strictly tandem-repetitive or be an integral part of two higher-order tandem repeats (i.e., Hinf[lur] elements, Sal[lur] elements). All three types of Cla-related repeats are localized in the centromeres of C. luridus chromosomes. This suggests that the dispersed chromosomal localization of Cla elements in C. t. thummi may be the result of an amplification and transposition during evolution of this subspecies.
