The impact of elutriated sediment-associated contaminants from Toronto and Toledo Harbours on ultraplankton (5–20 µm) and microplankton/netplankton (> 20 µm) carbon assimilation rates was determined using Algal Fractionation Bioassays (AFBs). All of the Toronto elutriate caused significant inhibition of ultraplankton carbon assimilation. The Toronto Site 2 elutriate caused the greatest significant inhibition (38 percent, p < 0.001) with a 20 percent dose of standard elutriate. Similarly, all Toledo elutriates caused significant inhibition of ultraplankton productivity. Toledo Site 2 elutriate was the most toxic with the 20 percent elutriate dose (35 percent, p < 0.001).The treatment of elutriates with Chelex-100 resin was used to remove dissolved free metal ions which, in some samples, resulted in the recovery of 14C assimilation. This was attributed to the elimination of the toxic effects of dissolved metals removed by the Chelex treatment. Residual toxicity after the Chelex treatment was ascribed to the high PCB levels observed in the sediment samples taken from both harbours and possibly to other organic contaminants. Due to the extreme sensitivity of the technique, an EC25 is proposed as an early warning indicator for applied use by regulatory agencies. Our procedure has been included amongst a battery of tests recommended by the International Joint Commission for monitoring areas of concern in the Laurentian Great Lakes. 相似文献

Experimental manipulation of the number of altricial offspring is supposed to modify parental expenditure in birds. In addition
to the observed increase in parental feeding rate, it is also possible that the choice of prey or the size of load may change
with the changing demand for food. Sexual differences in the provisioning response are also expected, on the basis of earlier
studies. We examined the effect of brood size manipulation on choice of prey brought to nestlings and load size in the pied
flycatcher. The composition and size of loads differed between years, possibly depending on varying availability of different
prey types. Males responded to brood size enlargement by gathering heavier loads, whereas females showed no response. The
alteration of load size in males was not explained by a larger number of prey items or mean prey size, but was a combination
of these components. It is likely that males also increased their work rate in response to increased food demand at the nest.
The absence of response in females might be because they are unable to increase work rate any further, or because food delivery
rate in females can not be optimized by changing load properties.

Recent developments in the field of genetic divergence and speciation focus more on diversifying processes than on geographic
mode of speciation (i.e. allopatric versus sympatric). Some of these new theories concern speciation driven by conflicts between
the sexes. Even though it is well known that the two reproductive functions in plants can have different selective optima,
sexual selection in plants is by many assumed to be weak or non-existent. Here we outline potential sexual conflicts in plants
and discuss how selection pressures generated by such conflicts may influence genetic divergence. There is opportunity for
conflicting selection pressures between individuals, such as manipulative pollen traits that enhance male reproductive success
at the expense of the female reproductive function. Within individual plants, fitness of the male function (pollen export)
and fitness of the female function (pollen import) may be optimised by different traits, leading to conflicting selection
pressures in relation to pollen transfer. This may affect selection for floral specialisation versus floral generalisation
in animal-pollinated species. We believe that selection pressures generated by sexual conflict need to be appreciated in order
to fully understand microevolutionary processes which may lead to genetic divergence and speciation in plants. 相似文献

Anoxia tolerance and ethanol sensitivity of rice (Oryza sativa L.) and oat (Avena sativa L.) seedlings were evaluated to clarify their growth habit in anoxia. Anoxic stress inhibited elongation and dry weight gain
of coleoptiles of the oat and rice seedlings; however, the inhibition of the oat coleoptiles was much greater than that of
the rice coleoptiles. Anoxic stress increased endogenous ethanol concentration and alcohol dehydrogenase activity in oat and
rice coleoptiles and their increases in the rice coleoptiles were much greater than those in the oat coleoptiles. At concentrations
greater than 30 mM and 300 mM, exogenously applied ethanol inhibited the elongation and weight gain for the oat and the rice
coleoptiles, respectively, and the inhibition was increased with increasing ethanol concentrations with marked inhibition
being achieved on the oat coleoptiles. These results suggest that anoxia tolerance and induction of ethanolic fermentation
in anoxia may be greater in rice than oat, and ethanol sensitivity of rice may be lower than that of oat. 相似文献

The mucosae of the nasal passages contain a large amount of glands which express secretory proteins as well as phase I and phase II biotransformation enzymes. In this review the metabolic activation, covalent binding and toxicity of chemicals in the Bowman's glands in the olfactory mucosa, in the sero-mucous glands in the nasal septum and in the lateral nasal glands and maxillary glands around the maxillary sinuses are discussed. Light microscopic autoradiographic studies have demonstrated a selective covalent binding of nasal toxicants and carcinogens such as halogenated hydrocarbons and N-nitrosamines, especially in the Bowman's glands following a single systemic exposure, suggesting a high rate of metabolic activation of chemicals in these glands. Special attention is put on the herbicide dichlobenil which induces necrosis in the olfactory mucosa following a cytochrome-P450-mediated metabolic activation and covalent binding in the Bowman's glands. 相似文献

The essentiality of vitamin D for normal growth and development has been recognized for over 80 years, and vitamin D fortification programs have been in place in the United States for more than 70 years. Despite the above, vitamin D deficiency continues to be a common finding in certain population groups. Vitamin D deficiency has been suggested as a potential risk factor for the development of preeclampsia, and vitamin D deficiency during infancy and early childhood is associated with an increased risk for numerous skeletal disorders, as well as immunological and vascular abnormalities. Vitamin D deficiency can occur through multiple mechanisms including the consumption of diets low in this vitamin and inadequate exposure to environmental ultraviolet B rays. The potential value of vitamin D supplementation in high‐risk pregnancies and during infancy and early childhood is discussed. Currently, there is vigorous debate concerning what constitutes appropriate vitamin D intakes during early development as exemplified by differing recommendations from the Institute of Medicine Dietary Reference Intake report and recent recommendations by the Endocrine Society. As is discussed, a major issue that needs to be resolved is what key biological endpoint should be used when making vitamin D recommendations for the pregnant woman and her offspring. In addition to the known antitumour effects of ursolic acid (UA), increasing evidence indicates that this molecule plays a role in cardiac protection. In this study, the effects of ursolic acid on the heart in mice treated with doxorubicin (DOX) were assessed. The results showed that ursolic acid improved left ventrical fractional shortening (LVFS) and left ventrical ejection fraction (LVEF) of the heart, increased nitrogen oxide (NO) levels, inhibited reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and decreased cardiac apoptosis in mice treated with doxorubicin. Mechanistically, ursolic acid increased AKT and endothelial nitric‐oxide synthase (eNOS) phosphorylation levels, and enhanced eNOS expression, while inhibiting doxorubicin induced eNOS uncoupling through NADPH oxidase 4 (NOX4) down‐regulation. These effects of ursolic acid resulted in heart protection from doxorubicin‐induced injury. Therefore, ursolic acid may be considered a potential therapeutic agent for doxorubicin‐associated cardiac toxicity in clinical practice. 相似文献
