Isoprene is the primary biogenic hydrocarbon emitted from temperate deciduous forest ecosystems. The effects of varying photon flux density (PFD) and nitrogen growth regimes on rates of isoprene emission and net photosynthesis in potted aspen and white oak trees are reported. In both aspen and oak trees, whether rates were expressed on a leaf area or dry mass basis, (1) growth at higher PFD resulted in significantly higher rates of isoprene emission, than growth at lower PFD, (2) there is a significant positive relationship between isoprene emission rate and leaf nitrogen concentration in both sun and shade trees, and (3) there is a significant positive correlation between isoprene emission rate and photosynthetic rate in both sun and shade trees. The greater capacity for isoprene emission in sun leaves was due to both higher leaf mass per unit area and differences in the biochemical and/or physiological properties that influence isoprene emission. Positive correlations between isoprene emission rate and leaf nitrogen concentration support the existence of mechanisms that link leaf nitrogen status to isoprene synthase activity. Positive correlations between isoprene emission rate and photosynthesis rate support previous hypotheses that isoprene emission plays a role in protecting photosynthetic mechanisms during stress. 相似文献

Concentrations of Ni were determined in xylem and phloem of Quercus ilex trees growing on serpentine and sandy loam soils of northeast Portugal. Radial distribution patterns of Ni in stemwood were compared to variations in annual growth increments of the trees.Concentrations of Ni in xylem and phloem were higher in Q. ilex from serpentine soil, when compared with Q. ilex of a sandy loam soil.The radial distributions of Ni showed large variations among the trees, although they all grew in the same area within a short distance from each other. These differences can be caused by small-scale spatial variations in the soil. Therefore, the use of such radial Ni distributions for a retrospective biomonitoring of the Ni pollution of larger areas appears questionable. 相似文献

Chloroplast DNA polymorphisms have been detected by the conventional Southern-blotting hybridization method in four species of European oaks (Quercus petraea, Q. robur, Q. pubescens and Q. pyrenaica). Three polymorphisms, shared by at least three of these species, can be scored directly in ethidium bromidestained gels and were used in a broad survey of the level of differentiation of the oak species and of their pattern of genetic structure in western Europe. The highly significant geographic variation and the high genetic differentiation (Gst=0.895, SGst=0.025) indicate a low level of cytoplasmic gene flow. We conclude that cytoplasmic genomes are well suited for the reconstruction of past migrational routes of such a complex of species. 相似文献

Abstract. Germination and developmental behaviour during juvenile stages are of importance in relation to succession mechanisms acting on plant communities. This is particularly so in the Mediterranean region, where the climatic summer drought causes stress. We investigated and compared germination and development of four tree species in two parts of the French Mediterranean region where the original dominant tree species (Quercus pubescens) has been largely replaced by Quercus ilex in the southern part, and Castanea sativa in the northern part. Observed differences in germination rates and developmental behaviour, especially shootroot ratio and the role of water supply, suggest that other species may eventually replace the current dominant species. 相似文献

Elevated atmospheric carbon dioxide (Ca) usually reduces stomatal conductance, but the effects on plant transpiration in the field are not well understood. Using constant‐power sap flow gauges, we measured transpiration from Quercus myrtifolia Willd., the dominant species of the Florida scrub‐oak ecosystem, which had been exposed in situ to elevated Ca (350 µmol mol ? 1 above ambient) in open‐top chambers since May 1996. Elevated Ca reduced average transpiration per unit leaf area by 37%, 48% and 49% in March, May and October 2000, respectively. Temporarily reversing the Ca treatments showed that at least part of the reduction in transpiration was an immediate, reversible response to elevated Ca. However, there was also an apparent indirect effect of Ca on transpiration: when transpiration in all plants was measured under common Ca, transpiration in elevated Ca‐grown plants was lower than that in plants grown in normal ambient Ca. Results from measurements of stomatal conductance (gs), leaf area index (LAI), canopy light interception and correlation between light and gs indicated that the direct, reversible Ca effect on transpiration was due to changes in gs caused by Ca, and the indirect effect was caused mainly by greater self‐shading resulting from enhanced LAI, not from stomatal acclimation. By reducing light penetration through the canopy, the enhanced self‐shading at elevated Ca decreased stomatal conductance and transpiration of leaves at the middle and bottom of canopy. This self‐shading mechanism is likely to be important in ecosystems where LAI increases in response to elevated Ca. 相似文献

Abstract. The development of secondary Pinus densiflora (Japanese red pine) forests after pine wilt disease was studied through phytosociological analysis, estimation of forest structure before disease and size-structure, tree ring and stem analyses. Following the end of the disease, the growth of previously suppressed small oak trees was accelerated. This is quite different from the development of forests following fire, which starts with the establishment of pine seedlings. Pine wilt disease shifted the dominance of secondary forests from Pinus densiflora to Quercus serrata oak forest. In pine forests, disturbance by fire is important for forest maintenance. In contrast, disturbance by pine wilt disease leads to an acceleration of succession from pine forest to oak forest. 相似文献
