The mangrove vegetation of a disturbed and undisturbed site in bothKenya and Sri Lanka was investigated in the field for three vegetation layers:adult trees, young trees, and juvenile trees. A minimum of 25 sample points, inwhich the vegetation was described and environmental factors (salinity, lightintensity, land/water ratio, abundance of herbivorous crabs and snailabundance)were measured or estimated, were taken on each site. Detrended correspondenceanalysis (DCA) and canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) were used tosummarize the data bulk, to investigate the vegetation dynamics(e.g., comparability of species distribution in the threevegetation layers), and/or to link the vegetation data to the environmentalfactors. Results showed that species clusters were relatively easy todelineate,whether mangrove zonation was present or not. Among the environmental factors,the abundance of propagule predators (mostly sesarmid crabs) contributedsignificantly to the variation in vegetation and could be an explanatoryparameter for the observed vegetation data in a majority of sites. In the sitewhere it was not, the most important factor in the ordination was theland/waterratio, which is important at the ecological level as well (link between waterlevel and vegetation dynamics). However, none of the environmental factorscouldsuccessfully explain the total variability in the vegetation data suggestingthat other, more determining factors exist. Our results further provideinformation on the dynamic or non-dynamic nature of a forest and on its abilityto rejuvenate, and may contribute to appropriate forestry management guidelinesin the future.  相似文献

Abstract. Bryophyte dynamics after fire in the Mediterranean macchia of Southern Italy was studied both by diachronic and synchronic approaches. Changes of bryophyte cover and species composition were found in relation to both age and fire intensity. During the first 2 yr after fire, bryophytes dominated the plots which had experienced the highest fire intensity while herbs were dominant in plots affected by lighter fires. Pioneer species, such as Funaria hygrometrica, Barbula convoluta and Bryum dunense, characterized recent intense fires, whereas Bryum torquescens, B. radiculosum and B. ruderale were dominant after less intense burning. Pleurochaete squarrosa, Tortula ruraliformis and Tortella flavovirens dominated intermediate successional stages. Pleurocarpous mosses were dominant only in the older closed stands. Different patterns of regeneration strategies were described: spores dominated early stages of intense fire, while vegetative propagules characterized later successional stages and less severely burned areas. Although bryophytes usually have a low abundance in Mediterranean vegetation, their role in post-fire vegetation dynamics may be locally enhanced according to burning conditions.  相似文献

本文报道了丘陵地区发育于第四纪红色粘土母质的马尾松林自然植被下红壤、栽种胡枝子的两种侵蚀红壤及花生-油菜轮作的耕作红壤等3种生态条件下的土壤中VA菌根真菌繁殖体数量、种类、侵染势、施用石灰石粉改土和增施磷肥对VA菌根真菌侵染的影响以及VA菌根真菌的接种效应.试验结果表明,3种生态条件下的土壤中VA菌根真菌繁殖体数量和侵染势显然不同:马尾松林自然植被下的红壤中VA菌根真菌繁殖体数量大,侵染迅速;花生-油菜轮作的耕作红壤VA菌根真菌繁殖体数量也大,但侵染缓慢,有明显的滞后期;栽种胡枝子的侵蚀红壤VA菌根真菌繁殖体数量小,侵染力很低.对侵蚀红壤与耕作红壤接种VA菌根真菌,显著提高了VA菌根的侵染率,在适当施用磷肥及施石灰石粉改土后,都能促进VA菌根侵染,从而增加了植物的吸磷量,植物生长量显著提高.  相似文献

Species invasions have been a central theme in ecology over the past decades, with a focus on invasions of non-indigenous European species in the New World. However, within Europe, native species may also become invasive. Such species rapidly increase their geographic range and may at the same time broaden their ecological amplitude. We report on Lactuca serriola L., which has shown a rapid range expansion in many parts of Europe. We reconstructed its geographical spread through The Netherlands; furthermore, we tested for changes in its ecological amplitude.

Before 1950, L. serriola was rare in The Netherlands, recorded from only 80 grid-cells (of 5×5 km2). Subsequently, its distribution increased from 219 grid-cells (1980), to 546 cells (990) and 998 grid cells (2000). It currently occupies at least 60% of The Netherlands. Analyses of relevées demonstrate, using detrended correspondence analysis (DCA), that the variance in the assemblage of species co-occurring with L. serriola increased significantly since 1940, indicating that the species currently occurs in a broader range of vegetation types. Correlating averages of Ellenberg's indicator values per vegetation relevée with time, we found correlations for continentality (+), acidity (−) and (soil) humidity (+). Moreover, the proportion of phanerophytes in the relevées increased over time. These findings suggest that in addition to its original ruderal habitat, L. serriola also currently occurs in more closed vegetation types. Based on analyses of two other co-occurring Asteraceae species, we showed that these patterns were specific for L. serriola only. We conclude that L. serriola has broadened its ecological amplitude and discuss four mutually non-exclusive explanations for the recent invasiveness of L. serriola: (i) Effects of a changed environment: global warming and ruderalisation; (ii) metapopulation dynamics and increased diaspore pressure; (iii) microevolution; (iv) genetic reinforcement due to hybridisation with conspecific (crop) species.  相似文献

Composition and seasonal patterns of the fern spore bank were compared to the surface vegetation of grasslands on dolomite rock in Hungary. Viability and potential dormancy of spores were tested through storage experiments. Although Asplenium ruta-muraria L. was the only species found at the study sites, five others, probably originating from air-borne spores from nearby areas, emerged from the soil samples. Considerable seasonal variability was detected in the number of prothallia emerging from soil samples from different sampling dates, with a peak after spore dispersal. The increased number of emerging prothallia after 1 year of storage suggests that a part of the spores stored in the soil samples were presumably dormant. Investigations on the dormancy of fern spores might be of great interest, especially in species adapted to seasonally unfavourable habitats.  相似文献

Islands are often considered easier to invade than mainland locations because of lower biotic resistance, but this hypothesis is difficult to test. We compared invasion success (the probability of establishing a wild reproducing population) for bullfrogs (Rana catesbeiana) introduced to enclosures on 26 farms on islands in the Zhoushan archipelago and 15 farms in neighboring mainland China. Bullfrogs were more likely to invade farms located on islands with lower native frog species richness than mainland farms, consistent with the biotic resistance hypothesis. However, human frog hunting pressure also differed between islands and the mainland and, along with the number of bullfrogs raised in enclosures, was a stronger predictor of invasion success than native frog richness in multiple regression. Variation in hunting pressure was also able to account for the difference in invasion success between islands and mainlands: islands had lower hunting pressure and thus higher invasion probability. We conclude that the ease with which bullfrogs have invaded islands of the Zhoushan archipelago relative to the mainland has little to do with biotic resistance but results from variation in factors under human control.Electronic Supplementary Material Supplementary material is available for this article at and is accessible for authorized users.  相似文献

Abstract

Growing coastal urbanization together with the intensification of maritime traffic are major processes explaining the increasing rate of biological introductions in marine environments. To investigate the link between international maritime traffic and the establishment of non-indigenous species (NIS) in coastal areas, biofouling communities in three international and three nearby local ports along 100?km of coastline in south-central Chile were compared using settlement panels and rapid assessment surveys. A larger number of NIS was observed in international ports, as expected in these ‘invasion hubs’. However, despite a few environmental differences between international and local ports, the two port categories did not display significant differences regarding NIS establishment and contribution to community structure over the studied period (1.5 years). In international ports, the free space could be a limiting factor for NIS establishment. The results also suggest that local ports should be considered in NIS surveillance programs in Chile.  相似文献

Seed predation impacts heavily on plant populations and community composition in grasslands. In particular, generalist seed predators may contribute to biotic resistance, i.e. the ability of resident species in a community to reduce the success of non-indigenous plant invaders. However, little is known of predators’ preferences for seeds of indigenous or non-indigenous plant species or how seed predation varies across communities. We hypothesize that seed predation does not differ between indigenous and non-indigenous plant species and that seed predation is positively related to plant species diversity in the resident community. The seed removal of 36 indigenous and non-indigenous grassland species in seven extensively or intensively managed hay meadows across Switzerland covering a species-richness gradient of 18–50 plant species per unit area (c. 2 m2) was studied. In mid-summer 2011, c. 24,000 seeds were exposed to predators in Petri dishes filled with sterilized soil, and the proportions of seeds removed were determined after three days’ exposure. These proportions varied among species (9.2–62.5%) and hay meadows (17.8–48.6%). Seed removal was not related to seed size. Moreover, it did not differ between indigenous and non-indigenous species, suggesting that mainly generalist seed predators were active. However, seed predation was positively related to plant species richness across a gradient in the range of 18–38 species per unit area, representing common hay meadows in Switzerland. Our results suggest that generalist post-dispersal seed predation contributes to biotic resistance and may act as a filter to plant invasion by reducing the propagule pressure of non-local plant species.  相似文献

We document the invasion of Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) to southern South America providing historical, current and future perspectives. We conducted field sampling, angler surveys, and analyzed all written records, and found evidence of reproductive populations in more than ten Andean (and many more coastal) watersheds draining mainly to the Pacific Ocean in Chile (39°–53° S), but also to the Atlantic Ocean in Argentina (50° S). Invasion begun ∼25 years ago apparently from a few point sources of introduction by ocean ranching operations using spring-run Chinook salmon originated from tributaries of the lower Columbia River, USA. The rapid spread suggests that Chinook salmon were pre-adapted to their novel marine and freshwater environments because of similarities to equivalent North Pacific habitats, and invasion may have been facilitated by low ecological resistance. Preliminary data suggest that populations express a latitudinal gradient in juvenile migration life histories equivalent to that in their native range. Parallels to the only other establishment of anadromous Chinook salmon outside their native range, New Zealand, suggests a predictable invasion rate. In South America, the invasion is ongoing in southern areas, yet we deem unlikely colonization of rivers north of the range reached thus far. This is the first anadromous salmon species to have invaded such a large range in South America, and it raises many evolutionary, ecological, environmental and socioeconomic issues, with several discussed here.
