The existence of consistent individual differences in behaviour (‘animal personality’) has been well documented in recent years. However, how such individual variation in behaviour is maintained over evolutionary time is an ongoing conundrum. A well-studied axis of animal personality is individual variation along a bold–shy continuum, where individuals differ consistently in their propensity to take risks. A predation-risk cost to boldness is often assumed, but also that the reproductive benefits associated with boldness lead to equivalent fitness outcomes between bold and shy individuals over a lifetime. However, an alternative or complementary explanation may be that bold individuals phenotypically compensate for their risky lifestyle to reduce predation costs, for instance by investing in more pronounced morphological defences. Here, we investigate the ‘phenotypic compensation’ hypothesis, i.e. that bold individuals exhibit more pronounced anti-predator defences than shy individuals, by relating shell shape in the aquatic snail Radix balthica to an index of individual boldness. Our analyses find a strong relationship between risk-taking propensity and shell shape in this species, with bolder individuals exhibiting a more defended shell shape than shy individuals. We suggest that this supports the ‘phenotypic compensation’ hypothesis and sheds light on a previously poorly studied mechanism to promote the maintenance of personality variation among animals.  相似文献

The foraminiferal order Rotaliida represents one third of the extant genera of foraminifers. The shells of these organisms are extensively used to decipher characteristics of marine ecosystems and global climate events.It was shown that shell calcite of benthic Rotaliida is twinned. We extend our previous work on microstructure and texture characterization of benthic Rotaliida and investigate shell calcite organization for planktonic rotaliid species. Based on results gained from electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD) and field emission electron microscopy (FESEM) imaging of chemically etched/fixed shell surfaces we show for the planktonic species Globigerinoides sacculifer, Pulleniatina obliquiloculata, Orbulina universa (belonging to the two main planktonic, the globigerinid and globorotaliid, clades): very extensive 60°-{0 0 1}-twinning of the calcite and describe a new and specific microstructure for the twinned crystals. We address twin and crystal morphology development from nucleation within a biopolymer template (POS) to outermost shell surfaces. We demonstrate that the calcite of the investigated planktonic Rotaliida forms through competitive growth. We complement the structural knowledge gained on the clade 1 and clade 2 species with EBSD results of Globigerinita glutinata and Candeina nitida shells (clade 3 planktonic species). The latter are significantly less twinned and have a different shell calcite microstructure.We demonstrate that the calcite of all rotaliid species is twinned, however, to different degrees. We discuss for the species of the three planktonic clades characteristics of the twinned calcite and of other systematic misorientations. We address the strong functionalization of foraminiferal calcite and indicate how the twinning affects biocalcite material properties.  相似文献

In this work, we evaluated the ovicidal activity and the deleterious effects of cashew (Anacardium occidentale) nut shell oil and its fractions on the development of Musca domestica and Chrysomya megacephala, important vectors of several diseases. The insecticidal effects of this plant were also measured on the first and second instar larvae of Anticarsia gemmatalis and Spodoptera frugiperda, soy and maize pests, respectively. The fly eggs and the crop pest insect larvae were exposed to the cashew (Anacardium occidentale) nut shell liquid (CNSL) and its fractions: technical CNSL, anacardic acid, cardanol and cardol. The results show that the cardol fraction, for both species of flies, presented the lowest lethal concentration with LC50 of 80.4 mg/L for M. domestica and 90.2 mg/L for C. megacephala. For the mortality of the larvae of A. gemmatalis and S. frugiperda, the most effective fraction was anacardic acid with LC50 of 295.1 mg/L and 318.4 mg/L, respectively. In all species, the mortality rate of the commercial compounds (cypermethrin 600 mg/L and temephos 2 mg/L) was higher than that of the evaluated compounds. Despite this, the results obtained suggest their potential in field trials, once the fractions of A. occidentale presented high mortality at low lethal concentrations in laboratory conditions, with the possibility of integrated use in the control of disease vectors and agricultural pests, employing ecofriendly compounds.  相似文献

The activation volumes for the reactions of horseradish peroxidase compound II with L-tyrosine. 3-iodo-L-tyrosine. p-aminobenzoic acid and ferrocyanide were determined by using a high-pressure stopped-flow technique at 25°C and pH 7. For the tyrosines, the solvent electrostriction accompanying substrate ionization and H+ transfer from the substituted phenol to a basic group of the enzyme can account for the observed negative activation volumes. For p-aminobenzoic acid a simple electron transfer without H+ transfer appears to occur. The positive activation volume for ferrocyanide may be explained in terms of electron transfer associated with a large change in electrostriction of the inorganic redox couple.  相似文献

The origin, ultrastructure and histochemical properties of the egg membranes in the South Indian anostracan, Streptocephalus dichotomus have been studied. The egg morphology and the ultrastructure of the tertiary membrane of this phyllopod crustacean have been examined both by scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Scanning electron microscopic observations on the egg surface reveal the characteristic ridges on the egg surface with pores. Similarly, the tertiary egg shell of S. dichotomus consists of two distinct layers, an outer cortex and an inner alveolar layer. There are specific differences in the structure and in the relationship of one layer to the other. The alveolar layer is characterised by large lipid droplets and an alveolar mesh. These two layers termed as tertiary layers are secreted by maternal shell glands. The outer tertiary egg layers are phenolically tanned, the precursor materials for tanning being derived from shell gland secretions.  相似文献

The predictability of evolution depends on the roles that selection and historical contingency play in determining its outcomes, but the relative importance of these evolutionary mechanisms has attracted considerable debate. One view is that historical events have such a profound impact on the genetic structure of populations that patterns of phenotypic evolution are essentially unpredictable. The opposing view is that selection is so powerful that evolutionary change is primarily deterministic, and thus highly predictable. By controlling for the effects of phylogeny, geographic location and habitat, this study examined the relative roles of contingency and determinism in a local radiation of land snails, genus Rhagada, in a continental archipelago. Informed by previous studies on a single island, which revealed a strong association between low‐spired shells and rocky habitats, 28 population pairs were sampled in directly adjoining rocky and spinifex plain habitats. When considered in their respective pairs, the effect of habitat was remarkably consistent, with lower‐spired shells observed in the rocky habitat in 24 of the comparisons. However, when analyzed outside the context of those pairs, the association was obscured by broad variation in shell shape within habitat types and among lineages. These results reveal the complex nature of a morphological radiation; while the pattern of ecological divergence is highly predictable at the scale that selection acts, deterministic evolution is largely obscured by phylogenetic and population history.  相似文献

Stable isotopes in mollusc shells, together with variable growth rates and other geochemical properties, can register different environmental clues, including seawater temperature, salinity and primary productivity. However, the strict biological control over the construction of biominerals exerted by many calcifying organisms can constrain the use of these organisms for paleoenvironmental reconstructions. Biologically controlled calcification is responsible for the so called vital effects that cause a departure from isotopic equilibrium during shell formation, resulting in lower shell oxygen and carbon compared to the equilibrium value. We investigated shell oxygen and carbon isotopic composition of the bivalve Chamelea gallina in six sites along with a latitudinal gradient on the Adriatic Sea (NE Mediterranean Sea). Seawater δ18O and δ13CDIC varied from North to South, reflecting variations in seawater temperature, salinity, and chlorophyll concentration among sites. Shell δ18O and δ13C differed among sites and exhibited a wide range of values along with the ~400 km latitudinal gradient, away from isotopic equilibrium for both isotopes. These results hampered the utilization of this bivalve as a proxy for environmental reconstructions, in spite of C. gallina showing promise as a warm temperature proxy. Rigorous calibration studies with a precise insight of environment and shell growth are crucial prior to considering this bivalve as a reliable paleoclimatic archive.  相似文献

In high knee flexion, contact between the posterior thigh and calf is expected to decrease forces on tibiofemoral contact surfaces, therefore, thigh-calf contact needs to be thoroughly characterized to model its effect. This study measured knee angles and intersegmental contact parameters in fifty-eight young healthy participants for six common high flexion postures using motion tracking and a pressure sensor attached to the right thigh. Additionally, we introduced and assessed the reliability of a method for reducing noise in pressure sensor output. Five repetitions of two squatting, two kneeling, and two unilateral kneeling movements were completed. Interactions of posture by sex occurred for thigh-calf and heel-gluteal center of force, and thigh-calf contact area. Center of force in thigh-calf regions was farther from the knee joint center in females, compared to males, during unilateral kneeling (82 and 67 mm respectively) with an inverted relationship in the heel-gluteal region (331 and 345 mm respectively), although caution is advised when generalizing these findings from a young, relatively fit sample to a population level. Contact area was larger in females when compared to males (mean of 155.61 and 137.33 cm2 across postures). A posture main effect was observed in contact force and sex main effects were present in onset and max angle. Males had earlier onset (121.0°) and lower max angle (147.4°) with onset and max angles having a range between movements of 8° and 3° respectively. There was a substantial total force difference of 139 N between the largest and smallest activity means. Force parameters measured in this study suggest that knee joint contact models need to incorporate activity-specific parameters when estimating loading.  相似文献
