We studied the influence of entomopathogenic nematodes , Steinernema carpocapsae and S. riobravis, on natural populations of plant - parasitic nematodes (PPNs) infesting turfgrass in Georgia and South Carolina . S. riobravis applied at 6 109 infective juveniles (IJs) / acre provided up to 95 - 100% control of the root - knot , Meloidogyne sp ., sting , Belonolaimus longicaudatus, and ring nematode , Criconemella sp ., in Georgia , but S. carpocapsae had no effect . S. riobravis was as effective as the chemical nematicide , Fenamiphos (Nemacur 10G) at 4 weeks after treatment and more effective at 8 weeks after treatment . In South Carolina , both S. riobravis and S. carpocapsae applied at 1 109 IJs / acre provided up to 86 - 100 % control of the root - knot , sting and ring nematodes . Application of 6 109 IJs / acre increased control by only 4 - 14 % over the 1 109 dosage . Possible causes of differences in efficacy of S. carpocapsae at the two sites are discussed . It is concluded that S. riobravis may provide effective , predictable and economical control of PPNs in turfgrass . 相似文献

Seven hundred and fifty-two rhizobacteria were isolated from 186 rhizosphere soil samples collected across tomato growing regions of Karnataka. Among them, 26% strains were Gram positive and other 74% were Gram negative and dominant being Bacillus and Pseudomonas. Sampling of different locations showed variation in species richness and diversity indices. Similarity matrix computed with Jaccard’s coefficient and principle coordinate analysis to correlate bacterial diversity revealed that rhizobacterial genera of Mysore, Mandya and Kolar soil samples were very closely related and rarefaction curve analysis indicated that these soil samples also harbored higher number of rhizobacteria which included all the genera studied. PGPR trait analysis revealed that most of the rhizobacteria were endowed with more than one beneficial trait which may act individually or simultaneously, and indole acetic acid production and phosphate solubilization are the two predominant traits exhibited by these rhizobacteria. Rhizobacterial isolates also showed a varied level of plant growth promotion traits and offered protection against fungal origin foliar and root pathogens. Among the nine regions studied, Mysore, Mandya and Kolar regions recorded higher percentage of promising PGPRs in comparison with other regions studied of Karnataka. 相似文献

Abstract An extensive literature survey of the host-range of Agrobacterium -induced neoplasms has revealed that highly susceptible plant families are accumulators of polyphenolics, whereas families assumed to be non-sensitive to the pathogen seem to lack this property. These and other results might indicate that polyphenolics play a role in the host-pathogen relationship of Agrobacterium -induced neoplasms. ABSTRACT Brood parasites often must overcome host defenses that may include behaviors that serve other functions, such as deterrence of predators and nest attendance during laying and incubation. Host use by brood parasites may also be influenced by competitors in areas where more than one parasitic species occurs. We identified the degree to which behavior of potential hosts and potential competitors affected laying by Brown‐headed Cowbirds (Molothrus ater) and Bronzed Cowbirds (M. aeneus) at a site in south Texas where they co‐occur. We watched potential host nests during the presunrise period to record cowbird laying and document nest visitation, laying, cowbird‐host encounters, and nest attentiveness by hosts. Hosts were frequently at their nests when cowbirds laid eggs (83% of 121 watches among nests of five host species) and cowbirds regularly encountered hosts (43–74% and 40–77% of watches per species of host for Brown‐headed and Bronzed cowbirds, respectively). Host nest defense infrequently interfered with cowbird laying and cowbirds rarely interacted with one another during laying. Overall, 12% of the 42 cowbird laying attempts that elicited host nest defense failed, resulting in cowbird eggs either laid atop hosts as they sat in nests or laid outside the nest cup. We clearly documented that relatively small hosts can thwart parasitism by cowbirds. Thus, the potential for successful defense of nests should be considered when assessing the evolution of behaviors to deter the removal of host eggs by cowbirds and mechanisms leading to nest abandonment. Regarding the latter, the presence of a cowbird at a nest would be a poor indicator for parasitism as some laying attempts were thwarted and unparasitized broods were reared at those nests. Despite the potential for nest defense to affect host use by cowbirds, we did not detect an effect of nest defense. Because most host defense was ineffective, we examined hypotheses for the timing of cowbird laying and host nest attendance. Our analysis of time of day of laying by Brown‐headed Cowbirds at our site and data compiled from the literature suggests that laying time is best predicted by the time of civil twilight (first light) rather than sunrise. 相似文献

The reconstitution of Brome Mosaic Virus (BMV) has been studied using neutron scattering. Experiments were performed on disassembled virus without subsequent separation of components. Phase diagrams of the disassembly and subsequent reassembly of BMV were established as a function of pH and LiCl molarity by analytical centrifugation and quasi-elastic light scattering. Disassembly occurs at a pH above 6.5 and above 0.8 M LiCl. On reassembly, if the pH is lowered first, capsids are formed without subsequent incorporation of RNA. Neutron scattering was used to investigate the formation of virus particles, when the ionic strength was lowered from 1.4 to 0.1 M LiCl at pH 7.8. The reconstitution was followed continuously. As it was driven by a lowering of the ionic strength the kinetics of the process cannot be studied for short times. However the fact that at any given ionic strength no evolution of the scattering was observed with time implies that the reconstitution is complete within a few minutes. The observations in buffers with various amounts of D2O lead to the conclusion that the reassembly is achieved by co-condensation of the RNA and of the capsid proteins. 相似文献

This study was designed to determine the changes that occur in the thermoregulatory ability of the immature rat repeatedly exposed to low-level microwave radiation. Beginning at 6-7 days of age, previously untreated rats were exposed to 2,450-MHz continuous-wave microwaves at a power density of 5 mW/cm2 for 10 days (4 h/day). Microwave and sham (control) exposures were conducted at ambient temperatures (Ta) which represent different levels of cold stress for the immature rat (ie, "exposure" Ta = 20 and 30 degrees C). Physiological tests were conducted at 5-6 and 16-17 days of age, in the absence of microwaves, to determine pre- and postexposure responses, respectively. Measurements of metabolic rate, colonic temperature, and tail skin temperature were made at "test" Ta = 25.0, 30.0, 32.5, and 35.0 degrees C. Mean growth rates were lower for rats exposed to Ta = 20 degrees C than for those exposed to Ta = 30 degrees C, but microwave exposure exerted no effect at either exposure Ta. Metabolic rates and body temperatures of all exposure groups were similar to values for untreated animals at test Ta of 32.5 degrees C and 35.0 degrees C. Colonic temperatures of rats repeatedly exposed to sham or microwave conditions at exposure Ta = 20 degrees C or to sham conditions at exposure Ta = 30 degrees C were approximately 1 degrees C below the level for untreated animals at test Ta of 25.0 degrees C and 30.0 degrees C. However, when the exposure Ta was warmer, rats exhibited a higher colonic temperature at these cold test Ta, indicating that the effectiveness of low-level microwave treatment to alter thermoregulatory responses depends on the magnitude of the cold stress. 相似文献

Summary The effect of artificial acid rain on the reproduction and survival of the aphid Euceraphis betulae on silver birch was studied in Turku, southern Finland. Eight bioassays were done during 1984–1986. In four of the bioassays the aphids produced 40% to over 100% more progeny on birches watered with dilute sulphuric acid (pH 3.5) than on control trees. In four other cases the performance of aphids did not differ between the treatments. An index of aphid reproduction pooled over the whole study was significantly higher on acid-treated than on control birches. The reproduction of aphids on acid-treated birches was enhanced when precipitation was below long term average, suggesting an interaction between the stress caused by acid treatment and dry periods. 相似文献
