In the developing peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.) kernels, the period between 15 and 35 days after podding (DAP) was identified as the active period of oil-filling. The
period of active oil-filling was associated with a decrease in the starch, soluble sugars and proteins so as to make available
the energy and carbon skeleton for the synthesis of oil. The oil content in the mature kernels decreased by 11, 12 and 25
per cent with Zn, S and Zn+S deficiency, respectively. In addition, proteins and starch content decreased significantly while
that of soluble sugars increased slightly. The activity of malate dehydrogenase and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase also
decreased due to Zn as well as S deficiency. The deficiency treatments resulted in a decrease in phospholipids, free fatty
acids and triacylglycerols in mature kernels. Further the proportion of 16∶0 and 18∶2 decreased while that of 18∶1 increased

pruning, total transpiration and leaf water potential were significantly lower (P=0.05) and the stomatal resistance was significantly higher (P=0.05) where 54 and 71 per cent roots were pruned, as compared to no root pruning or 24 per cent root pruning. The leaf relative

Summary Advances in and prospects for the development of salt tolerant crops are discussed. The genetic approach to the salinity problem
is fairly new, but research has become quite active in a short span of time. Difficulties and opportunities are outlined.
Salinity varies spatially, temporally, qualitatively, and quantitatively. In addition, the responses of plants to salt stress
vary during their life cycle. Selection and breeding, including the use of wide crosses, are considered the best short-term
approaches to the development of salt tolerant crops, but the new biotechnological and molecular biological techniques will
make increasingly important contributions. Cooperation is called for among soil and water scientists, agronomists, plant physiologists
and biochemists, cytologists, and plant geneticists, breeders, and biotechnologists. Given such cooperation and adequate support

Summary Growth and mineral uptake of twenty-four tropical forage legumes and grasses were compared under glasshouse conditions in a sterile low P oxisol, one part inoculated and the other not inoculated with mycorrhizal fungi. Shoot and root dry weights and total uptake of P, N, K, Ca, and Mg of all the test plants were significantly increased by mycorrhizal inoculation. Mycorrhizal inoculation, with few exceptions, decreased the root/shoot ratio. Non-mycorrhizal plants contained always lower quantities of mineral elements than mycorrhizal plants. Plant species showed differences in percentage mycorrhizal root length and there was no correlation between percentage mycorrhizal infection and plant growth parameters. A great variation in dependence on mycorrhiza was observed among forage species. Total uptake of all elements by non-mycorrhizal legumes and uptake of P, N and K by non-mycorrhizal grasses correlated inversely with mycorrhizal dependency. Mycorrhizal plants of all species used significantly greater quantities of soil P than the nonmycorrhizal plants. Summary Periwinkle (Catharanthus roseus) cells cultured in 1-B 5 medium display the ultrastructure of parenchyma cells. The parenchyma character remained unchanged when cells were exposed to any one of three different conditions effecting alkaloid accumulation. Transfer of cells to alkaloid production medium for 2 weeks (condition 1) accorded two special features,i.e., unusually big lipid droplets in the cytoplasm and, upon fixation, one or several electron-dense droplets of spongy precipitate in vacuoles. Among hormone-autotrophic cultures (condition 2) some cells showed a fine electron-dense vacuolar precipitate. Addition ofPhythium homogenate (fungal elicitor) to cells cultured in 1-B 5-medium for 10 days (condition 3), cells showed a frequent appearance of singular big lipid droplets in the cytoplasm, whereas vacuoles remained devoid of precipitate. Summary Two lines of mice were selected for high post-weaning weight gain (3 to 6 weeks) adjusted for 3 week weight. One line (F) was grown on freely available food and the other (S) on a feeding scale set at the same level for all mice. Food intake of the S line averaged 80% of the F line. The realised heritabilities after 6 generations of selection were 0.38±0.06 and 0.33±0.07 for the F and S lines, respectively. In generation 7, mice from the F and S lines and from an unselected control line (C) were compared on both free and set levels of feeding from 3 weeks to 9 weeks of age. Measurements taken were growth rate, appetite, food conversion efficiency (weight gain/food intake) and body composition (fat, protein, ash, water). The F and S lines grew more rapidly and efficiently than the C line on both levels of feeding, each line performing best on the level of feeding on which it was selected. The average genetic correlation between growth rates of the same line on the two feeding levels was 0.54±0.10. The F line grew 19% faster and was 9% more efficient than the S line on free feeding but the S line grew 15% faster and was 15% more efficient than the F line on set feeding. Relative to the C line, food intake per day on free feeding was 4% higher in the F line and 6% lower in the S line. There was no difference between the lines in food intake/g body weight. The rate of deposition of all body components increased in both selection lines. In the F, S and C lines respectively, efficiencies of gains in body components (102x gain/food) were 1.79, 1.31 and 1.06 for fat, 1.53, 1.63 and 1.22 for protein and 5.88, 6.45 and 4.98 for protein + water. Apparently energy lost as heat was reduced in both the F and S lines. The partitioning of energy retained was altered in favour of more fat in the F line and more protein in the S line. 相似文献

Summary Resistance to watermelon mosaic virus-2 in Phaseolus vulgaris L. is conferred by two distinct dominant alleles at independent loci. Based on segregation data one locus is designated Wmv, the other, Hsw. The dominant allele Wmv from cv. Great Northern 1140 prevents systemic spread of the virus but viral replication occurs in inoculated tissue. In contrast, Hsw confers both local and systemic resistance to WMV-2 below 30C. At higher temperatures, plants that carry this allele in the absence of modifying or epistatic factors develop systemic veinal necrosis upon inoculation with the virus that results in rapid death. Patho-type specificity has not been demonstrated for either allele; both factors confer resistance to every isolate tested. A temperature-sensitive shift in epistasis is apparent between dominant alleles at these loci. Because Hsw is very tightly linked if not identical to the following genes for hypersensitivity to potyviruses I, (bean common mosaic virus), Bcm, (blackeye cowpea mosaic virus), Cam, (cowpea aphid-borne mosaic virus) and Hss (soybean mosaic virus), parental, reciprocal dihybrid F1 populations, and selected F3 families were inoculated with each of these viruses and held at 35 C. F1 populations developed vascular necrosis completely or primarily limited to inoculated tissue, while F3 families from WMV-2-susceptible segregates were uniformly susceptible to these viruses. The relationship between Hsw, Wmv and other genes for potyvirus resistance suggest patterns in the evolution of resistance and viral pathogenicity. Characterization of the resistance spectrum associated with each factor provides an additional criterion to distinguish genes for plant virus resistance. 相似文献

Summary An amylose-free potato mutant was isolated after screening 12,000 minitubers. These minitubers had been induced on stem segments of adventitious shoots, which had been regenerated on leaf explants of a monoploid potato clone after Röntgen-irradiation. The mutant character is also expressed in subterranean tubers and in microspores.
