This study evaluated the predation by Podisus nigrispinus (Dallas) (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) at various densities of larvae and pupae of the pest Plutella xylostella (L.) (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae). We tested predator behavior of female P. nigrispinus at six experimental densities (1, 5, 10, 15, 20, or 25 prey items in a 1‐l transparent plastic container, replicated 15 times for each density) of both the fourth instar and pupae of P. xylostella. The number of prey consumed was monitored every 15 min for 12 h and was subsequently monitored at 24 h. Podisus nigrispinus females were weighed before and after the experiments to determine the effect of different densities of prey on their weight gain. Female predators had a Type‐II functional response, with attack rate estimated at 1.387 and 0.260 and a handling time of 0.091 and 0.183 h?1 for larvae and pupae, respectively. Podisus nigrispinus consumed on average 10.9 larvae or 5.5 pupae in 24 h. Despite the similarity of the response type, P. nigrispinus preferred to feed on larvae, rather than on pupae. 相似文献

The effect of photoperiod on nymphal development, growth and adult size was examined in a pentatomid bug, Dolycoris baccarum , collected in Osaka (a warm temperate region) and Hokkaido (a subfrigid region), Japan. When insects were reared from eggs at 25°C, the developmental period was long and adult size was large under photoperiods close to the critical photoperiod for the induction of adult diapause. Adults of the Hokkaido population were larger than those of the Osaka population. There was no significant correlation between developmental period and adult size. Insects also showed variation in their growth rate: growth rate was low under photoperiods a little longer than the critical photoperiod for the induction of diapause. The ecological significance of variation in development and growth is discussed. 相似文献

Southern green stink bugs, Nezara viridula (L.) (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae), and related species are significant pests of cotton, Gossypium hirsutum L. (Malvaceae), in the USA Cotton Belt. Using their stylets, adults introduce pathogens of cotton into cotton bolls, and preliminary data indicate nymphs can also ingest these pathogens. However, data are lacking regarding stylet penetration potential of N. viridula nymphs, and records of stylet penetration by adults are typically determined after damage has occurred. In this study, rostral segments of all developmental stages of N. viridula were measured to estimate potential stylet penetration depth using a novel mathematical model. Overall mean stylet penetration estimates for all stages ranged from 135.3 μm for first instars to 2 389.3 μm for adult females. Potential stylet penetration significantly increased as the insect progressed through nymphal stages. Penetration was also significantly affected by insect posture while feeding. Overall minimum and maximum observed lengths of rostrum ranged from 835.3 μm (first instars) to 7 088.2 μm (adult females), and mean rostral lengths were significantly different between all stages. This report establishes conservative baselines of potential stylet penetration depths by all nymphal stages and both adult sexes of N. viridula. Additionally, the model presented here can be used to estimate potential stylet penetration for other Hemiptera and closely related insects with similar modes of feeding. In conjunction with crop phenology data, accurate estimates of potential stylet penetration will allow more proactive approaches to pest management in a wide range of high‐value cash crops affected worldwide by N. viridula. 相似文献

Two chemical compounds eliciting prey-locating behavior of the predatory stink bug, Eocanthecona furcellata, were isolated from solvent extracts of Spodoptera litura larvae and identified. A hexane eluted fraction from silica gel chromatography of the solvent extracts of S. litura larvae was attractive to E. furcellata nymphs when assayed with a linear track olfactometer. The hexane fraction was found to contain n-pentadecane (2500 ng/larva), n-tetracosane (54 ng/larva), n-heptadecane (41 ng/larva), n-heptacosane (61 ng/larva), n-nonacosane (147 ng/larva), n-hentriacontane (200 ng/larva) and squalene (323 ng/larva). The synthetic n-pentadecane was attractive to the bugs, although its activity was slightly lower than that of the hexane fraction. A mixture of synthetic n-pentadecane and the other six hydrocarbons was also attractive, although no improved attractiveness was observed by the addition of the latter compounds. On the other hand, a 15%-ether-in- hexane eluted fraction from silica gel chromatography stimulated bugs to display a proboscis-protruding behavior. A neutral-layer fraction of the 15% fraction, which contained E-phytol (480 ng/larva), also elicited this behavior. Synthetic E-phytol had the same effect on the predators as the neutral-layer fraction. 相似文献

Genitalia are multitasking structures whose development is mediated by numerous regulatory pathways. This multifactorial nature provides an avenue for multiple sources of selection. As a result, genitalia tend to evolve as modular systems comprising semi-independent subsets of structures, yet the processes that give rise to those patterns are still poorly understood. Here, we ask what are the relative roles of development and function in shaping modular patterns of genitalia within populations and across species of stink-bugs. We found that male genitalia are less integrated, more modular, and primarily shaped by functional demands. In contrast, females show higher integration, lower modularity, and a predominant role of developmental processes. Further, interactions among parts of each sex are more determinant to modularity than those between the sexes, and patterns of modularity are equivalent between and within species. Our results strongly indicate that genitalia have been subjected to sex-specific selection, although male and female genitalia are homologous and functionally associated. Moreover, modular patterns are seemingly constant in the evolutionary history of stink-bugs, suggesting a scenario of multivariate stabilizing selection within each sex. Our study demonstrates that interactions among genital parts of the same sex may be more fundamental to genital evolution than previously thought. 相似文献

Herbivory is known to increase the emission of volatiles, which attract natural enemies to herbivore‐damaged plants in laboratory and agricultural systems. We report on signalling through volatiles induced by Euschistus heros (F.) (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) in two legumes that influence the attraction and retention of the egg parasitoid Telenomus podisi (Ashmead) (Hymenoptera: Scelionidae). Air‐borne extracts obtained from two host plants of E. heros, soybean, Glycine max, and pigeon pea, Cajanus cajan (Leguminosae), produce a different blend of emitted volatiles when attacked by adult males or females and nymphs of the pest species, compared with the undamaged plants. The same results were obtained when the plants were treated with extracted saliva of E. heros which had been mechanically introduced into the plants. This indicates that some substance in the saliva contributed to the release of the volatiles. Bioassays in a Y‐tube olfactometer with female T. podisi and treated plants confirmed the significant preference of the egg parasitoid for plants attacked by either males, females, or fourth instar nymphs of the pest species. On the other hand, volatile extracts obtained from soybean subjected to the velvetbean caterpillar, Anticarsia gemmatalis, a non‐host species for T. podisi, showed a different blend of volatiles compared to those obtained from plants subjected to E. heros. Additionally, the volatiles obtained from this plant–host complex were not attractive to T. podisi. These results indicate that E. heros causes an increase in the emission of specific plant volatiles, and that the induction is possibly caused by an elicitor present in the pest saliva. The possibility that these plant volatiles play an important role in the attraction and retention of the egg parasitoid T. podisi is discussed. 相似文献

Intraguild predation (IGP) betweenthe pentatomid Podisus maculiventris(Say) and the coccinellid Harmoniaaxyridis (Pallas) in the absence or presenceof the extraguild prey Spodopteralittoralis (Boisduval) and Myzuspersicae (Sulzer) was studied in thelaboratory. Interactions were asymmetric infavor of the pentatomid. Podisusmaculiventris readily fed upon eggs and larvaeof H. axyridis, but adult beetles wererarely attacked. Success of attacks by P.maculiventris was stage dependent, fourthinstars and adults being more successful inkilling ladybeetle larvae than second instars.Attacks by H. axyridis on the pentatomidwere rare and none of them were successful. Theeffect of introducing extraguild prey on thelevel of IGP was tested both in petri dishesand on caged sweet pepper plants. Whensufficient numbers of S. littoralislarvae were present to satiate the pentatomid,predation on H. axyridis larvae decreasedsignificantly, indicating that the coccinellidis a less preferred or less vulnerable prey.When the aphid M. persicae was presentedas extraguild prey, levels of IGP were notaltered. Nymphs of P. maculiventrissuccessfully completed development whenexclusively fed on larvae of H. axyridis,but developmental time was longer than onlepidopteran prey. No pentatomid nymphs reachedadulthood on aphids alone. IGP by P.maculiventris on H. axyridis may be ofsome importance in greenhouse crops, where bothpredators are being used increasingly inaugmentative biological control programs.Nonetheless, it is expected that in practicelarger larvae and adults of H. axyridiswill escape most attacks by the pentatomid. 相似文献
