ABSTRACT Avian bycatch, a common and undesired occurrence in small mammal studies, should be minimized by researchers. We examined effects of trap covering, treadle color (copper or yellow plastic), trap size (mouse or rat), and trap weathering (traps <1 yr or ≥ 1 yr old) on avian bycatch during 3 years. We found that covered traps caught 81% fewer birds and 70% fewer small mammals than did uncovered traps, that mouse traps caught 30% more birds and 38% more small mammals than did rat traps, and no capture differences for treadle color or trap weathering. Covered traps effectively reduced avian bycatch and should be used when reduced small-mammal capture rates are acceptable. 相似文献

Both the conversion of natural habitats to farmland and efforts at increasing the yield of existing crops contribute to a decline in biodiversity. As a consequence of land conversion, specialised species are restricted to remnants of original habitat patches, which are frequently isolated. This may lead to a genetic differentiation of the subpopulations. We used seven microsatellite markers to examine the genetic population structure of the grass snake, Natrix natrix (Linnaeus, 1758), sampled in remnants of pristine habitat embedded in an intensively used agricultural landscape in north‐western Switzerland. The study area, a former wetland, has been drained and gradually converted into an agricultural plain in the last century, reducing the pristine habitat to approximately 1% of the entire area. The grass snake feeds almost entirely on amphibians, and is therefore associated with wetlands. In Central Europe, the species shows severe decline, most probably as a result of wetland drainage and decrease of amphibian populations. We found no genetically distinct grass snake populations in the study area covering 90 km2. This implies that there is an exchange of individuals between small remnants of original habitat. Thus, gene flow may prevent any genetic differentiation of subpopulations distributed over a relatively large area. The leaf cuticular waxes of three Salix species and two Populus species hybrids, selected for their ability to produce high amounts of biomass, were characterized. Samples were extracted in CH(2)Cl(2) three times over the growing season. Low kV SEM was utilized to observe differences in the ultrastructure of leaf surfaces from each clone. Homologous series of wax components were classified into organic groups, and the variation in wax components due to clone, sample time, and their interaction was identified. All Salix species and Populus species hybrids showed differences in total wax load at each sampling period, whereas the pattern of wax deposition over time differed only between the Salix species. A strong positive relationship was identified between the entire homologous series of alcohols and total wax load in all clones. Similarly strong relationships were observed between fatty acids and total wax load as well as fatty acids and alcohols in two Salix species and one Populus species hybrid. One Salix species, S. dasyclados, also displayed a strong positive relationship between alcohols and alkanes. These data indicate that species grown under the same environmental conditions produce measurably different cuticular waxes and that regulation of wax production appears to be different in each species. The important roles cuticular waxes play in drought tolerance, pest, and pathogen resistance, as well as the ease of wax extraction and analysis, strongly suggest that the characteristics of the cuticular wax may prove to be useful selectable traits in a breeding program. 相似文献

To elucidate the mode of dissemination of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in neonate intensive care units (NICUs), a total of 223 isolates from 3 separate hospitals were investigated between 1994 and 1996 by a DNA fingerprinting technique with pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE). Exoprotein profiles of some strains were also examined using SDS-polyacrylamide gel-electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) and the assessment of enzyme/toxin production such as coagulase, enterotoxin and TSST-1. Judging from the strain typing data from PFGE results and the epidemiological data, 2 different types of PFGE patterns (A and B) and their subtypes (A′, A″ and B′) were identified. The A type including A′ and A″ (comprising approximately 95% of the isolates) was markedly dominant. Only 5% of the isolates belonged to type B and subtype B′. On the other hand, MRSA isolated from adult patients admitted to the same hospital showed many different PFGE patterns. The results strongly suggested that some strain(s) with specific PFGE pattern(s) is prevalent in NICUs. Furthermore, isolates which expressed the same PFGE pattern did not always express the same SDS-PAGE pattern. There were some isolates with different abilities to produce coagulase, enterotoxin C and toxic-shock syndrome toxin (TSST)-1, and the abilities had no relation with a particular type of PFGE pattern. Therefore, a combination of PFGE analysis and biochemical analyses of coagulase, enterotoxin C and TSST-1 may provide us with more detailed information for the epidemiological study of MRSA in NICUs. 相似文献

Fish kills of milkfish Chanos chanos and tilapia Oreochromis spp. now occur frequently in brackish, marine, and freshwater
farms (ponds, pens, and cages) in the Philippines. Aquafarms with high organic load, limited water exchange and circulation,
no aeration, and high stocking and feeding rates can become oxygen-depleted and allow sulfide from the sediments to appear
in the water column and poison free-swimming fish. The sulfide tolerance of 2–5 g milkfish and 5–8 g O. mossambicus was determined
in 25-liter aquaria with flow-through sea water (100 ml min-1) at 26–30 °C and sulfide stock solutions pumped in at 1ml min-1.
Total sulfide concentrations in the aquaria were measured by the methylene blue method and used in the regression against
the probits of % survival. Four experiments showed that the two species have similar sulfide tolerance. In sea water of pH
8–8.5, about 163 ± 68 μM or 5.2 ± 2.2 mg l-1 total sulfide (mean ± 2 se) or 10 μM or 313 μg l-1 H2S was lethal to 50% of the
fish in 4–8 h, and 61 ± 3 μM total sulfide or 4 μM H2S in 24–96 h (to convert all sulfide concentrations: 1 μM = 32 μg l-1).
Earthen pond bottoms had 0–382 μM total dissolved sulfide (mean ± sd = 54 ± 79 μM, n = 76); a tenth of the samples had >200
μM. The water column may have such sulfide levels under hypoxic or anoxic conditions. To simulate some of the conditions during
fish kills, 5–12 g milkfish were exposed to an abrupt increase in sulfide, alone or in combination with progressive respiratory
hypoxia and decreasing pH. The tests were done in the same flow-through set-up but with sulfide pumped in at 25 ml min-1.
The lethal concentration for 50% of the fish was 197 μM total sulfide or 12 μM H2S at 2 h, but 28–53 μM sulfide allowed fish
to survive 6–10 h. Milkfish in aquaria with no aeration nor flow-through sea water died of respiratory hypoxia in 5–8 h when
oxygen dropped from 6 to 1 mg l-1. Under respiratory hypoxia with 30–115 μM sulfide, the fish died in 2.5–4 h. Tests with
low pH were done by pumping a weak sulfuric acid solution at 25 ml min-1 into aquaria with flow-through sea water such that
the pH dropped from 8 to 4 in 5 h. Under these conditions, milkfish died in 7–9 h when the pH was 3.5. When 30–93 μM sulfide
was pumped in with the acid, the fish died in 2–6 h when the pH was still 4.5–6.3. Thus, sulfide, hypoxia, and low pH are
each toxic to milkfish at particular levels and aggravate each other's toxicity. Aquafarms must be well oxygenated to prevent
sulfide toxicity and fish kills.

The capture of prey by last instar larvae of the aphidophagous coccinellidHarmonia axyridis Pallas (Col.,Coccinellidae) modified larval movement so that extensive search was replaced by intensive search. The continuous rearing of this species on eggs ofEphestia kühniella Zell. (Lep.,Pyralidae) or on the aphidAcyrthosiphon pisum Harris (Homopt.,Aphidae) led to conditioning. Only larvae that ate the same prey as they were reared on, adopted intensive searching movements after feeding. Hemoglobin released into the bloodstream is tightly bound by haptoglobin. The resulting complex (HpHb) is promptly cleared from the circulation and accumulates in the liver. A binding protein with a high affinity for HpHb has been solubilized from an acetone powder of rat liver and freed from an endogenous inhibitor by passage over a column of immobilized hemoglobin. An assay procedure has been developed whereby the bound HpHb is selectively precipitated by polyethylene glycol 6000. Employing this assay, the binding reaction was shown to be linear and saturable with respect to the ligand. In contrast to several previously described receptors for glycoproteins, the carbohydrate moiety of haptoglobin did not appear to participate in the binding of HpHb by the soluble receptor. 相似文献

In an accelerated longitudinal design (ALD), individuals enter the study at different points of their growth trajectory and are observed over a short time span relative to the entire time span of interest. ALD data are combined across independent units to provide an estimate of an overall population curve and predictions of individual patterns of change. As a modest extension of the work of Ruppert et al. (2003, Semiparametric Regression, Cambridge University Press), we develop a computationally efficient procedure for the application of longitudinal semiparametric methods under ALD sampling schemes. We compare balanced and complete longitudinal designs to ALDs using the Berkeley Growth Study data and apply our method to longitudinal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) brain structure size (volume) measurements from an ongoing developmental study. Potential applications extend beyond growth studies to many other fields in which cost and feasibility constraints impose restrictions on sample size and on the numbers and timings of repeated measurements across subjects. 相似文献

Pasture lands are an important facet of land use in the northeast United States, yet little is known about their recent diversity. To answer some fundamental questions about the diversity of these pasture lands, we designed a broad survey to document plant species richness using an intensive, multi scale sampling method. We also wanted to learn whether environmental (soils or climate) or land management variables could help explain patterns of species richness. A total of 17 farms, encompassing 37 pastures, were sampled in New York, Pennsylvania, Vermont, Maryland, Massachusetts and Connecticut during July and August 1998. We positively identified a total of 161 different plant species across the study region. Species richness averaged 31.7±1.1 on pastures. Infrequent, transient species that were mostly perennial and annual forbs accounted for 90% of the species richness. Except for a subjective rating of grazing intensity, land management methods were not good predictors of species richness. Over time, it appears that grazing neither reduces nor increases species richness in pastures. Of the environmental variables measured, only soil P explained a significant amount of the variation in species richness. Soil P was inversely related to species richness at the 1m2 scale. Percent SOM was positively associated with species richness at this scale, although weakly. At larger spatial scales, we suggest that patterns of species richness are best explained by the species diversity of soil seed banks, or seed rain, and stochastic recruitment of these species into existing vegetation. 相似文献
