To examine and compare the loading related changes in micro-morphology of the patellar tendon.Fifteen healthy young males (age 19 ± 3 yrs, body mass 83 ± 5 kg) were utilised in a within subjects matched pairs design. B mode ultrasound images were taken in the sagittal plane of the patellar tendon at rest with the knee at 90° flexion. Repeat images were taken whilst the subjects were carrying out maximal voluntary isometric contractions.Spatial frequency parameters related to the tendon morphology were determined within regions of interest (ROI) from the B mode images at rest and during isometric contractions.A number of spatial parameters were observed to be significantly different between resting and contracted images (Peak spatial frequency radius (PSFR), axis ratio, spatial Q-factor, PSFR amplitude ratio, and the sum). These spatial frequency parameters were indicative of acute alterations in the tendon micro-morphology with loading.Acute loading modifies the micro-morphology of the tendon, as observed via spatial frequency analysis. Further research is warranted to explore its utility with regard to different loading induced micro-morphological alterations, as these could give valuable insight not only to aid strengthening of this tissue but also optimization of recovery from injury and treatment of conditions such as tendinopathies.  相似文献

Limpets (Patella spp.) are suitable organisms to investigate the effects of climate change in marine systems. They are widespread over NE Atlantic intertidal rocky shores and have been extensively studied in terms of population dynamics and ecology. Within genus Patella, microsatellites have only been developed for Patella caerulea and cross-species tests are unknown. In this work, we describe 11 primer pairs for Patella depressa and the results of cross-species testing on Patella candei and Patella rustica.  相似文献

The mollusc Patella ferruginea, endemic to the Mediterranean, is the most endangered marine species on the list of the European Council Directive 92/43/EEC and it is under serious risk of extinction. In spite of the low abundances and restricted distribution of this limpet, important populations have been found in the harbour of Ceuta, north Africa. The main objective of the present study was to characterise, for the first time, the effects of sewage pollution on P. ferruginea and related limpet species, and to evaluate the potential value of these limpet assemblages as bioindicators, using univariate and multivariate analyses. Physicochemical parameters and limpets were sampled in nine stations located at 0, 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64 and 128 m away from the discharge point of a sewage effluent in Ceuta harbour. The stations closer to the outfall (0, 1, 2, 4 and 8) were characterised by higher values of turbidity, phosphate and ammonia in the water column, and organic matter, faecal coliforms and faecal Streptococci in sediments. A total of six limpet species were found and studied (Patella ferruginea, P. caerulea, P. nigra, P. rustica, P. ulyssiponensis and Siphonaria pectinata); the number of limpet species increased with increasing distance from the outfall, while diversity and evenness reached the highest values at intermediate sites. Siphonaria pectinata and P. caerulea were the most resistant and abundant species, while P. ferruginea was the most sensitive species to sewage pollution, only found at stations from 32 to 128 m. The distribution of this endangered limpet seems mainly affected by the pollution gradient, and not by the competition with the remaining limpets. The results of this study should be taken into account in future programmes of management and conservation of P. ferruginea.  相似文献

Bones of the lower extremity have been recovered for up to nine different individuals of Homo floresiensis - LB1, LB4, LB6, LB8, LB9, LB10, LB11, LB13, and LB14. LB1 is represented by a bony pelvis (damaged but now repaired), femora, tibiae, fibulae, patellae, and numerous foot bones. LB4/2 is an immature right tibia lacking epiphyses. LB6 includes a fragmentary metatarsal and two pedal phalanges. LB8 is a nearly complete right tibia (shorter than that of LB1). LB9 is a fragment of a hominin femoral diaphysis. LB10 is a proximal hallucal phalanx. LB11 includes pelvic fragments and a fragmentary metatarsal. LB13 is a patellar fragment, and LB14 is a fragment of an acetabulum. All skeletal remains recovered from Liang Bua were extremely fragile, and some were badly damaged when they were removed temporarily from Jakarta. At present, virtually all fossil materials have been returned, stabilized, and hardened. These skeletal remains are described and illustrated photographically. The lower limb skeleton exhibits a uniquely mosaic pattern, with many primitive-like morphologies; we have been unable to find this combination of ancient and derived (more human-like) features in either healthy or pathological modern humans, regardless of body size. Bilateral asymmetries are slight in the postcranium, and muscle markings are clearly delineated on all bones. The long bones are robust, and the thickness of their cortices is well within the ranges seen in healthy modern humans. LB1 is most probably a female based on the shape of her greater sciatic notch, and the marked degree of lateral iliac flaring recalls that seen in australopithecines such as “Lucy” (AL 288-1). The metatarsus has a human-like robusticity formula, but the proximal pedal phalanges are relatively long and robust (and slightly curved). The hallux is fully adducted, but we suspect that a medial longitudinal arch was absent.  相似文献

Asymmetric resection of the patella during total knee arthroplasty (TKA) correlates with anterior knee pain, bony impingement and patellar maltracking. Despite this, there is no consensus regarding the desired landmarks; the cut is often done freehand; and there has been no quantitative comparison of proposed resection planes. The objectives of this study were to: determine the intra- and inter-surgeon repeatability of two radiographic resection definitions (medial–divot, MD, and medial–lateral extents, MLE); calculate two additional definitions from the radiographic patellar circumferences (parallel to the anterior surface, ANT, and perpendicular to the anteroposterior tangent points, PERP); compare the clinical resection line to the previous four definitions before and after introducing the MD method clinically; and identify distinguishing features of patellae with better vs. worse resection angles. We hypothesized that the MD method would improve repeatability both radiographically and clinically, that the different radiographic definitions would produce comparable angles, and that we could identify distinguishing features. For the radiographic study, three surgeons drew lines on 40 preoperative X-rays plus 9 interspersed repetitions of 3 of these X-rays. For the clinical study, we compared the patellar resection angle for 20 patients immediately before and after implementing the new method. Given that the clinical goal is to have equal distances from the resection surface to the anterior surface, we compared all results to the ANT definition as the theoretically ideal definition. Confirming the first hypothesis, intra-surgeon repeatability (10 repetitions of 3 X-rays) and inter-surgeon repeatability (3 surgeons×40 X-rays) were both significantly better using the new MD method compared to the MLE method (p<0.001). Contrary to the second hypothesis, clinical use of the MD method did not improve resection symmetry. Contrary to the third hypothesis, the PERP definition was significantly different from the other three definitions. In agreement with the fourth hypothesis, female patellae and more deformed patella had significantly greater asymmetry (p<0.001). Given the inherent variability shown in drawing the ‘patellar horizon’, we encourage researchers to draw the line several times and average the results when comparing tilt or the resection angle to this horizon. Based on the distinguishing characteristics of asymmetrically resurfaced patellae in our series, we recommend that clinicians be particularly careful when resecting laterally deformed patellae and the patellae of female patients.  相似文献

Improper activation of the quadriceps muscles vastus medialis (VM) and vastus lateralis (VL) has been implicated in the development of patellofemoral pain (PFP). This explanation of PFP assumes that VM and VL produce opposing mediolateral forces on the patella. Although studies have provided evidence for opposing actions of VM and VL on the patella, other studies have suggested that their actions might be similar. In this study, we took advantage of the experimental accessibility of the rat to directly measure the forces on the patella produced by VM and VL. We found that VM and VL produce opposing mediolateral forces on the patella when the patella was lifted away from the femur. These distinct mediolateral forces were not transmitted to the tibia, however: forces measured at the distal tibia were very similar for VM and VL. Further, when the patella was placed within the trochlear groove, the forces on the patella produced by VM and VL were very similar to one another. These results suggest that mediolateral forces produced by VM and VL are balanced by reaction forces from the trochlear groove and so are not transmitted to the tibia. These results provide a rich characterization of the mechanical actions of VM and VL and have implications about the potential role of these muscles in PFP and their neural control during behavior.  相似文献

Spatial and trophic competitive interactions were analysed for the seldom-studied limpet Patella ferruginea (which is considered as an “extinction risk”). Spatial patterns of distribution of P. ferruginea were studied using quadrats of 1 × 1 m2 at several transects along the coastline, whereas trophic interactions were studied through manipulations of densities of P. ferruginea and Patella caerulea in experimental plots located at the mid-shore. Physical parameters were measured inside each plot to determine the microenvironmental differences between fenced and unfenced plots. Fenced plots of 50 × 50 cm2 were used with six different treatments. Mortality was recorded every 15 days and length was measured monthly during the 3.5 months of the experiment. At the beginning and end of the experiment, lengths and weights of limpets were recorded and chlorophyll concentration was measured by spectrophotometric analysis of rock surface. Both species showed increased mortality and reduced size and weight in treatments with greater densities. High intraspecific competition was detected in P. caerulea compared with P. ferruginea whereas asymmetrical interspecific competition was observed. The results suggest that P. caerulea is the superior competitor, possibly due to differences in radular morphology and mobility between the two species. Microalgal food assessment showed that it is probably a limiting resource, especially for P. caerulea, although this species has a lower biomass than P. ferruginea. The high intraspecific competition observed in P. caerulea could be responsible for the coexistence of both species. The present study may be useful in helping to conserve P. ferruginea, which is presently under serious threat of extinction, because the results show that experimental fences are a viable means of concentrating breeding individuals.  相似文献

Objective:To investigate the immediate effect of horseshoe taping for patellar superior and inferior gliding (HTPSG and HTPIG, respectively) using kinesiology tape on the peak moment of fatigued quadriceps.Methods:Twenty-eight adults were divided into the HTPSG (experimental) and HTPIG (control) groups. The peak moment of the dominant quadriceps of the participants was measured using Biodex System 4 prior to the experiment and after inducing quadriceps fatigue. The peak moment of the quadriceps was measured after separate application of HTPSG and HTPIG using kinesiology tape.Results:After kinesiology tape application, the peak moment of the quadriceps muscle was significantly increased in both groups (p<.05); however, the peak moment of the fatigued quadriceps muscle was significantly higher in the HTPSG group than in the HTPIG group (p<.05).Conclusions:The application of HTPSG using kinesiology tape would more be helpful for immediate recovery after exercise-induced quadriceps fatigue.  相似文献

Germinoma is a gonadal neoplasm originating from progenitor cells in germinal epithelium. Frequently described in some populations of bivalve molluscs, to our knowledge, germinoma has never been reported in gastropods so far. In this paper we describe the histopathological findings of some atypical cellular masses, originating in the undifferentiated germ cell layer in the male gonads of a limpet (Patella coerulea), whose morphological appearance resembled that of a germ cell tumor. The abnormal, and independent growth with no evidence of maturation of the undifferentiated and atypical germ cells, the limited number of follicles involved (n < 10%) and the absence of tissue invasion, supported a diagnosis of Stage 1 germinoma.  相似文献
