Hordeum spontaneum , the ancestor of cultivated barley, is mainly distributed in the Mediterranean zone of the Near East as well as in the Irano-Turanian steppes and Saharo-Arabian region; these areas receive unpredictable small amounts and distribution of rain followed by long, hot and dry summers. Caryopses of seven local ecotypes of H. spontaneum were collected in Israel from natural populations near Sede Boker, Neve Yaar, Tabigha and Mount Hermon. Three generations of these ecotypes were grown in natural conditions at Sede Boker with additional irrigation. The germination of caryopses of the third generation was tested. Due to the self pollination and atelechoric system of seed dispersal of this species, genetic ecophysiological diversity of afterripening and salt tolerance was found between the ecotypes originating from different areas, even within local populations and patches of plants that grew on different types or depths of soil at a distance of only a few meters from each other. Afterripening is important to prevent the caryopses from germinating shortly after maturation after a late rain at the beginning of the dry summer. Germination of the different ecotypes is regulated by temperature and length of post-maturation dry storage, as well as temperatures during wetting, and salinity.  相似文献

The first embryonic M-phase is special, being the time when paternal and maternal chromosomes mix together for the first time. Reports from a variety of species suggest that the regulation of first M-phase has many particularities; however, no systematic comparative study of the biochemical aspects of first and the following M-phases has been previously undertaken. Here, we ask whether the regulation of the first embryonic M-phase is modified, using Xenopus cell-free extracts. We developed new types of extract specific for the first and the second M-phase obtained either from parthenogenetic or from in vitro fertilized embryos. Analyses of these extracts confirmed that the amplitude of histone H1 kinase activity reflecting CDK1/cyclin B (or MPF for M-phase Promoting Factor) activity is higher and persists longer than during the second M-phase, and that levels of cyclins B1 and B2 are correspondingly higher during the first than the second embryonic M-phase. Inhibition of protein synthesis shortly before M-phase entry reduced mitotic histone H1 kinase amplitude, shortened the period of mitotic phosphorylation of chosen marker proteins, and reduced cyclin B1 and B2 levels, suggesting a role of B-type cyclins in regulating the duration of mitotic events. Moreover, addition of exogenous cyclin B to the extract prior the second mitosis brought forward the activation of mitotic histone H1 kinase but prolonged the duration of this activity. We also confirmed that the inhibitory phosphorylation of CDK1 on tyrosine 15 oscillates between the first two embryonic M-phases, but is clearly more pronounced before the first than the second mitosis, while the MAP kinase ERK2 tended to show greater activation during the first embryonic M-phase but with a similar duration of activation. We conclude that discrete differences exist between the first two M-phases in Xenopus embryo and that higher CDK1/cyclin B activity and B-type cyclin levels could account for the different characteristics of these M-phases.  相似文献

In dryland ecosystems, the timing and magnitude of precipitation pulses drive many key ecological processes, notably soil water availability for plants and soil microbiota. Plant available water has frequently been viewed simply as incoming precipitation, yet processes at larger scales drive precipitation pulses, and the subsequent transformation of precipitation pulses to plant available water are complex. We provide an overview of the factors that influence the spatial and temporal availability of water to plants and soil biota using examples from western USA drylands. Large spatial- and temporal-scale drivers of regional precipitation patterns include the position of the jet streams and frontal boundaries, the North American Monsoon, El Niño Southern Oscillation events, and the Pacific Decadal Oscillation. Topography and orography modify the patterns set up by the larger-scale drivers, resulting in regional patterns (102–106 km2) of precipitation magnitude, timing, and variation. Together, the large-scale and regional drivers impose important pulsed patterns on long-term precipitation trends at landscape scales, in which most site precipitation is received as small events (<5 mm) and with most of the intervals between events being short (<10 days). The drivers also influence the translation of precipitation events into available water via linkages between soil water content and components of the water budget, including interception, infiltration and runoff, soil evaporation, plant water use and hydraulic redistribution, and seepage below the rooting zone. Soil water content varies not only vertically with depth but also horizontally beneath versus between plants and/or soil crusts in ways that are ecologically important to different plant and crust types. We highlight the importance of considering larger-scale drivers, and their effects on regional patterns; small, frequent precipitation events; and spatio-temporal heterogeneity in soil water content in translating from climatology to precipitation pulses to the dryland ecohydrology of water availability for plants and soil biota.  相似文献

大猿叶虫Colaphellus bowringi Baly是十字花科上的重要害虫,一生能多次交配。本试验在25℃,光周期L∶D=12∶12条件下观察了大猿叶虫成虫连续7d的交配行为。结果表明:(1)每日平均交配(5.67±0.26)次,最高可达11次,不同日龄间的交配次数存在显著差异。(2)平均每日用于交配的时间为(238±10)min,占总时间的33.5%,最长可达493min,占总时间的68.5%,不同日龄间的交配时间有极显著差异。(3)交配持续时间最短8min,最长达289min,平均为(48±2)min;同一日内,随着交配次数增加,交配持续时间逐渐缩短;不同日龄间的交配持续时间存在显著差异。(4)相邻两次交配之间的间隔时间最短5min,最长300min,平均交配间隔(75±3)min;交配间隔时间随日龄的增加而明显延长。  相似文献

We examined the relationships between male body and horn sizes and mating duration in the Japanese horned beetle, Allomyrina dichotoma. Smaller males possessing shorter horns spent more time for copulation with a female and mounting the female without copulation. The results of multiple regression analyses indicate that the horn length is a determining factor for the time spent by the males during mating. A previous study has documented that the horn length of male A. dichotoma primarily determined the outcomes of aggressive male–male interactions; hence, predicts access to females. Therefore, instead of fighting for females, males possessing short horns may maximize their fertilization success by mating longer with the few females they have access to.  相似文献

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: It is well known that plant aerial development is affected by light intensity in terms of the date of flowering, the length of stems and petioles, and the final individual leaf area. The aim of the work presented here was to analyse how shade-induced changes in leaf development occur on a dynamic basis from the whole rosette level to that of the cells. METHODS: Care was taken to ensure that light intensity was the only source of micro-meteorological variation in the study. The dynamics of leaf production, rosette expansion, individual leaf area expansion and epidermal cell expansion were analysed in Arabidopsis thaliana plants grown under two light intensities in three independent experiments. KEY RESULTS: The total area of rosette leaves was reduced by the shading treatment. Both the number of leaves produced and their individual leaf areas were reduced. The reduction in leaf number was associated with a reduction in leaf initiation rate and the duration of the phase of leaf production. The reduction in individual leaf area was associated with a reduction in leaf expansion rate and an increase in the duration of leaf expansion. The changes in leaf expansion dynamics were accompanied by a decrease in epidermal cell number which was partly compensated for by an increase in epidermal cell area. Overall, the whole rosette leaf expansion rate was reduced by shading, whereas the total duration of rosette leaf expansion was unaffected. This was mainly due to the accumulation of the increases in the durations of expansion of each individual leaf which was associated with an increase in cell expansion. CONCLUSIONS: The dynamic analysis presented here reveals a new shade-adaptative response mediated via the control of area expansion at the cell, organ and whole plant levels.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Genetically abnormal action potential duration (APD) can be a cause of arrhythmias that include long and short QT interval syndrome. PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the arrhythmogenic effect of short QT syndrome induced by the over-expression of Kv1.5 in rat. METHODS: From Sprague-Dawley rats on fetal days 18-19, cardiomyocytes were excised and cultured with and without transfection with the Kv-1.5 gene using an adenovirus vector. The expression of Kv1.5 was proven by immunohistochemistry and Western blot analysis. In the culture dish and in the whole cells, the electrical activities were recorded using the whole-cell patch-clamp technique and the effects of 4-AP and verapamil were tested. RESULTS: After transfection with Kv1.5 for 12h, immunohistochemical staining and Western blot analysis were positive for Kv1.5 while they were negative in the control transfected with only Lac-Z. In the culture dish, the myocytes showed spontaneous beating at 115beats/min (bpm) just prior to the transfection with Kv1.5 and increased to 367bpm at 24h. The control myocytes showed stable beating rates during culturing. 4-AP at 200microM slowed down the rate and verapamil abolished the beating. In the whole cells, the maximal resting membrane potential was slightly depolarized and APD was extremely abbreviated both at 50% and 90% of repolarization compared with those of the control. Rapid spontaneous activities were found in a single myocyte with Kv1.5 transfection and 4-AP slowed down the frequency of the activities with a reversal of the shortened APD. CONCLUSION: The over-expression of Kv1.5 induced short APD and triggered activities in rat cardiomyocytes. This model can be used to study the arrhythmogenic substrate of short QT syndrome.  相似文献

In this study we describe the growth of several different larval cohorts (i.e. half-siblings of the same mother born on the same day) of a rare, xeric-adapted salamander Salamandra s. infraimmaculata Martens, 1885, under constant density and food conditions from birth to metamorphosis. The larvae spend the critical first phase of their lives in water, mostly in temporary ponds. Age and weight at metamorphosis were highly affected by varying food conditions. We have identified six different growth modes that these larvae use, both fast growing and slow growing. Each larval cohort was found to use 2-4 different such growth modes regardless of their initial weight. Fast growing modes (I-III) will enable larvae to survive dry years, and metamorphose bigger. Slow growing modes (IV-VI), used by 8% of the larval population, will enable survival only in rainy years. These last growth modes effect differential temporal dispersal in wet years by delaying the emergence of postmetamorphs onto land. Distribution of growth modes in the larval population is affected by food but not by density conditions. Late-born, fast-growing larvae will have an advantage in dry years being able to metamorphose and disperse, whereas the slow-growing larvae will survive only in wet years.  相似文献

In situ recording of the intracellular action potential (IAP) of human muscle fibres is not yet feasible, and consequently, knowledge about certain IAP characteristics of these IAPs is still limited. The ratio between the amplitudes of the second and first phases (the so-called peak-to-peak ratio, PPR) of a single fibre action potential (SFAP) is known to be closely related to the IAP profile. The PPR of experimentally recorded SFAPs has been found to be largely independent of changes in the fibre-to-electrode (radial) distance. The main goal of this paper is to analyze the effect of changes in different aspects of the IAP spike on the relationship between PPR and radial distance. Based on this analysis, we hypothesize about the characteristics of IAPs obtained experimentally. It was found that the sensitivity of the SFAP PPR to changes in radial distance is essentially governed by the duration of the IAP spike. Assuming that, for mammals, the duration of the IAP rising phase lies within the range 0.2-0.4 ms, we tentatively suggest that the duration of the IAP spike should be over approximately 0.75 ms, with the shape of the spike strongly asymmetric. These IAP characteristics broadly coincide with those observed in mammal IAPs.  相似文献
