Epichloë fungal endophytes and the formation of synthetic symbioses in Hordeeae (=Triticeae) grasses

This review examines two classes of organism that live in symbiosis; grasses, and fungi. Specifically it deals with grasses of the tribe Hordeeae (formerly Triticeae) of the subfamily Poöideae and the Epichloë fungi of family Clavicipitaceae. Epichloë endophytes, particularly asexual forms, have important roles in pastoral agricultural systems in the Americas, Australia, and New Zealand. Selected strains add value to some grass-based forage systems by providing both biotic and abiotic stress resistance. The importance of cereal grasses such as wheat, barley, rye, and oats to human and animal nutrition and indeed to the foundation and maintenance of human civilization is well documented. Both organism classes, Epichloë endophytes and cereal grasses, are of great importance in their own contexts. Here, we seek to review these two classes of organism and examine the possibility of bringing them together in symbiosis with the ultimate goal of improving cereal production systems. 相似文献

该文从形态学和基因水平上对内蒙古中东部草原4个羽茅(Achnatherum sibiricum)种群所含的27个内生真菌(Neotyphodium)菌株的遗传多样性进行了研究,结果表明羽茅内生真菌在形态学和基因水平上均表现出较高的遗传多样性。在PDA培养基上,根据菌落颜色、质地、生长速率和分生孢子外观等特征,可分为4个形态型;西乌旗、霍林郭勒和定位站3个种群所含的内生真菌菌落具有相似的生长特性和外观,而羊草(Leymus chinensis)样地种群无论从菌落外观和质地的多样性,还是遗传多样性指数均高于其它3个样地。用20个随机引物对这27株内生真菌基因组DNA进行RAPD分析,共检测到463个位点,其中461个为多态位点,多态位点百分率达99.6%,特有位点93个,占20.1%。Nei基因多样性指数h和Shannon多样性指数I分别为 0.238 0和0.387 0;多数菌株间的遗传一致度较低而遗传距离较大,在DNA水平上存在较显著的遗传变异。基于Nei无偏遗传距离和UPGMA法的聚类分析结果将27株内生真菌分为7组,并且与形态型的划分基本一致,RAPD分析方法提高了内生真菌类群划分的可靠性。 相似文献

Abstract Pigment decomposition, oxygen evolution and CO2 fixation were measured in the cyanobacterium Phormidium uncinatum after infection with cyanophage LPP-1, under light and dark conditions. A gradual decrease in para benzoquinone supported O2 evolution, chlorophyll a and phycocyanin level were noticed after 6 h of infection. These results demonstrated decreased photosynthetic activity of the host P. uncinatum prior to the start of LPP-1 multiplication. Metabolic inhibitor investigations confirmed that the cyanophage LPP-1 multiplication was independent of host photosynthesis. 相似文献

在繁殖棚内昼夜施放CO2,使棚内CO2浓度保持在800±100μlL-1,对三种澳大利亚园林植物:Chamelauciumuncinatum、Correareflexa和Prostantherainctsa进行插条试验。结果表明:高浓度CO2处理的Chamelauciumuncinatum和Correareflexa插条干物质重量和淀粉含量显著增加,使插条出根早、出根率高和根量多,据后40d的插条出根率分别比对照高26.6%和33.4%.然而,同样的CO2处理对Prostantheraincisa的插条没有明显影响。这可能是由于后者对CO2处理不敏感之故。 相似文献

Effects of Neotyphodium fungi on Lolium multiflorum seed germination in relation to water availability 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Temperate endophyte-infected (Neotyphodium sp.) grasses have been shown to exhibit an ecological advantage over endophyte-uninfected grasses under abiotic stressful conditions. It is predicted that endophyte-infected plant populations will display higher rates of germination and proportion of germinated seeds under limiting water conditions. METHODS: The hydrotime regression model was used to describe the effect of Neotyphodium endophyte on seed germination of Lolium multiflorum at different water potentials. Additionally, seed mortality after water stress exposure was estimated in endophyte-infected and -uninfected seeds. KEY RESULTS: Endophyte infection inhibited seed germination at all water potentials. The hydrotime model described satisfactorily the germination responses, and revealed that endophyte-free seeds exhibited higher rates of and final percentage germination, probably due to a lower base water potential compared with endophyte-infected seeds. However, Neotyphodium endophyte conferred a higher rate of survival in those seeds that remained ungerminated when exposed to highly water stress conditions. CONCLUSIONS: Changes produced by Neotyphodium endophyte in L. multiflorum seeds might affect fitness in particular ecological scenarios. For example, the presence of the endophyte may curtail seed germination when water is limiting, reducing the risk of seedling death. Conversely, endophyte-free seeds would display an enhanced germination, ensuring a more rapid seedling establishment if later water conditions do not restrict plant growth. 相似文献

Genetic variation for fitness‐relevant traits may be maintained in natural populations by fitness differences that depend on environmental conditions. For herbivores, plant quality and variation in chemical plant defences can maintain genetic variation in performance. Apart from plant secondary compounds, symbiosis between plants and endosymbiotic fungi (endophytes) can produce herbivore‐toxic compounds. We show that there is significant variation among aphid genotypes in response to endophytes by comparing life‐history traits of 37 clones of the bird cherry‐oat aphid Rhopalosiphum padi feeding on endophyte‐free and endophyte‐infected tall fescue Lolium arundinaceum. Clonal variation for life‐history traits was large, and most clones performed better on endophyte‐free plants. However, the clones differed in the relative performance across the two environments, resulting in significant genotype × environment interactions for all reproductive traits. These findings suggest that natural variation in prevalence of endophyte infection can contribute to the maintenance of genetic diversity in aphid populations. 相似文献

An expedment was designed to determine the effect of the fungal endophyte Neotyphodium lolii on the growth, physiological parameters and mineral element content of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perennel L.), when growing at two N supply levels. Endophyfe infection had a significant positive effect on both shoot and root growth of ryegrass, but this difference was only significant in the high N supply treatment. At high N supply, endophyte-infected (EI) plants accumulated more soluble sugar in the sheath and the root than endophyte-free (EF) plants. Endophyte infection affected mineral element concentrations In the root more than in the shoot. We found a significant effect of endophyte infection on B, Mn and Mg in the root, but significant effect was only found on B in the shoot. EI plants tended to accumulate less B in the shoot at both N levels, but accumulated more B, Mn and Mg in the root at low N levels. The difference of growth parameters in different periods was significant. The content of soluble sugar and crude protein in the sheath were also dependent on the growth stages of both EI and EF plants. 相似文献

Plant symbiotic fungi (endophytes) of the genus Neotyphodium [anamorphs, asexual derivatives of Epichloë (Ascomycota: Clavicipitaceae)] often associate with grass species of the subfamily Pooideae, which includes important forage and turf species. These endophytes are known to produce a range of alkaloids that enhance their host's resistance to insects or are toxic to grazing animals. Among the alkaloids, loline alkaloids (saturated 1‐aminopyrrolizidines) are generally observed in the highest concentrations in many Neotyphodium–grass symbiotic associations, and are known to be toxic to insects but not to mammals. Some Neotyphodium‐infected grasses have enhanced resistance to rice leaf bug, Trigonotylus caelestialium (Kirkaldy) (Heteroptera: Miridae), one of the major pests for rice production in Japan. Our laboratory experiments quantified the effects of purified loline (N‐formylloline) and in planta synthesis of loline alkaloids by meadow fescue [Lolium pratense (Huds.) S.J. Darbyshire (syn. Festuca pratensis Huds.)]–Neotyphodium uncinatum (Gams, Petrini & Schmidt) Glenn, Bacon & Hanlin and Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.)–Neotyphodium occultans Moon, Scott & Christensen associations on the development and survival of T. caelestialium. No‐choice feeding assays with laboratory populations of the insect revealed that their growth was significantly decreased by the infected grasses, and the effect was greater for N. uncinatum than for N. occultans, in keeping with differences in N‐formylloline concentrations in the plants. Artificial feeding of N‐formylloline through feeding sachets indicated that the chemical has an adverse effect on survival of larvae, even at the lowest concentration tested (50 µg/g), which was considerably lower than the typical concentrations in many Neotyphodium–grass associations. The results confirmed the ability of Neotyphodium‐infected forage grasses to control T. caelestialium propagation in meadows, which may cause damages to nearby rice paddies. 相似文献
