The morphometrics of subterranean mole rats, Spalax ehrenbergi superspecies in Israel, were studied. A total of 42 skull and body variables of 327 adults from 44 populations across the ranges of the 4 chromosomal species (2n = 52, 54, 58 and 60) were measured. The results showed: a. in general, significantly higher morphological values in males than in females; b. significant interspecific quantitative diffferences in 15 skull variables of males, and in 3 of females; but no qualitative diagnosis of any of the species; c. an intercorrelation between most skull variables at different orgamsmal levels, and a uniform and complete correlation with weight; d. a statistical discrimination in both metric and nonmetric multivariate analyses between most species pairs; e. an indication of high morphological similarity based on the relatively small multivariate Mahalanobis distances of dissimilarity between species; f. a possible explanation for a significant part of the variance in most skull and body variables resulting from a combination of temperature variables and water availability; g. a declination in size in skull and body variables between northern and southern species; h. the order of speciation events to be 2n = (54, 52)→58→60. Based on these results we conclude: 1. no morphological breaks are associated with the speciation of the S. ehrenbergi complex, and morphological differentiation is quantitative rather than qualitative between the species: 2. morphological diversity is significantly explained by climatic selection, and is therefore adaptive and explicable on even very low selective pressures over evolutionary time: 3. the morphospecies seem unable to reliably reflect the biological species in the S. ehrenbergi complex, and morphological differentiation, at least in this superspecies, evolves in a gradual rather than a punctual way: this would conform with Neo-Darwinian evolutionary theory.  相似文献

We have tested brain size diversity and encephalization in the actively speciating subterranean mole rats of the Spalax ehrenbergi superspecies in Israel. Our sample involved 171 individuals comprising 12 populations and 4 chromosomal species (2n = 52, 54, 58 and 60) distributed parapatrically from the northern Mediterranean region southward (2n = 52, 54→+58→60) into increasingly more arid and unpredictable climatic regimes, approaching the Negev Desert. Our results indicate that relative brain size and encephalization are highest in 2n = 60 as compared with 2n = 52, 54 and 58. We hypothesize that this pattern is adaptive and molded by natural selection. Brain evolution and higher encephalization in the S. ehrenbergi complex appears to be associated with increasing ecological stresses of aridity and climatic unpredictability.  相似文献

Evolutionary adaptation concerns a relative concept and the study of adaptations is directed to structures of individuals. The concept is devoid of any meaning when it is applied to species or populations. Adaptation is not synonymous with fitness or survival but does contribute to both of them. The term adaptation has a dual meaning since it refers both to the process of adaptation and to the state of being adapted. In the process of adaptation the mechanism of natural selection takes a prominent position. But the operation and effectiveness of natural selection are constrained by various limiting factors. Besides that, features may also be the result of nonadaptive evolution and only attain their present adaptive function at a later point in time. Another possibility is that features have at present a function different from the one for which they were initially designed. With respect to the state of being, the study of adaptation attempts to examine whether a particular feature indeed forms an adequate response to selection forces from the environment. Five methods or approaches generally are used to assess the adaptive significance of features, viz. the comparative, correlation, optimization, cladistic, and synthetic approach. Only the last-mentioned approach forms an adequate method since it attempts to establish, by direct analysis, which well-defined selection force exerts its influence on a certain character. The practicing taxonomist is faced with the problem that the data necessary to apply the synthetic method, generally require detailed field studies. Not all evolutionary changes are under the influence of natural selection. The presence of some features may be based on entirely different mechanisms, such as genetic drift, mutational pressure, pleiotropic gene action, allometric growth, or ecophenotypic responses. Various problems inherent to the optimization approach, and several others of practical and theoretical nature, make the morphocline method of the functional and evolutionary morphologists unsuitable as a method for phylogenetic reconstruction.  相似文献

The phenological patterns of 9 woody species that are common components of Kalahari Sand communities were observed over a period of 32 months. The observations were made on plants adjacent to the soil moisture study sites which have been described earlier (Childes & Walker 1987). A pre-rain flush was noted in the 2 shrub/small tree species Ochna pulchra and Terminalia sericea. Leaf fall in all species was related to a decrease in soil moisture and minimum temperature. The rooting habits and other adaptations of the species resulted in a sequential leaf fall in the communities. Open woodland and scrub species such as Pterocarpus angolensis showed a generally synchronised pre-rain flowering, while the closed woodland species e.g. Baikiaea plurijuga had protracted asynchronous flowering periods. Fruit ripening generally occurred in the dry season when conditions were ideal for fruit and seed dispersal.  相似文献

In this paper I consider whether traditional behaviors of animals, like traditions of humans, are transmitted by imitation learning. Review of the literature on problem solving by captive primates, and detailed consideration of two widely cited instances of purported learning by imitation and of culture in free-living primates (sweet-potato washing by Japanese macaques and termite fishing by chimpanzees), suggests that nonhuman primates do not learn to solve problems by imitation. It may, therefore, be misleading to treat animal traditions and human culture as homologous (rather than analogous) and to refer to animal traditions as cultural.  相似文献

The success of adoptive immunotherapy is dependent in part on the successful delivery of effector cells to the tumor and the expression of cellular activities, such as adhesion, extravasation, and cytotoxic activity of the effector cells in the tumor. The structural rigidity of the effector cell is an important determinant of these functions. The present study was designed to quantify the changes in cellular rigidity and cytotoxic activity of human natural killer (NK) cells in the presence or absence of interleukin-2 (IL-2). Micropipet aspiration was used to measure the resistance of NK cells to an imposed external deformation. Homogeneous suspensions of NK cells were activated with 1000 U/mL of recombinant IL-2 in vitro and tested for cellular rigidity from 0 to 96 h post stimulation. The IL-2 activated cells increased their rigidity within 24 h and maintained it at this level for 96 h. Prolonged incubation of cells in IL-2 (14 d) resulted in a consistently high rigidity, which was further increased on starvation of the cells from IL-2. The increased rigidity of these cells was maintained throughout 96 h of IL-2 deprivation, although significant relaxation of rigidity was observed between 48 and 96 h. The relaxation of rigidity was associated with an increase in the number of nonviable cells. Reintroduction of IL-2 for 24 h to a culture of NK cells depleted of IL-2 for 48 h did not restore the cells to the predepletion level of rigidity. Cytotoxic activity of the activated NK cells following removal of IL-2 decreased to about 60% of the control activity within 24 h and continued through 72 h postdeprivation. These findings suggest that the initial activation of human NK cells by IL-2 will produce a relatively rapid increase in rigidity that may cause entrapment of these cells in small capillaries in vivo and that removal of IL-2 will produce an additional increase in rigidity, which is associated with decreased functional activity.  相似文献

Abstract. Assembly rules provide one possible unifying framework for community ecology. Given a species pool, and measured traits for each species, the objective is to specify which traits (and therefore which subset of species) will occur in a particular environment. Because the problem primarily involves traits and environments, answers should be generalizable to systems with very different taxonomic composition. In this context, the environment functions like a filter (or sieve) removing all species lacking specified combinations of traits. In this way, assembly rules are a community level analogue of natural selection. Response rules follow a similar process except that they transform a vector of species abundances to a new vector using the same information. Examples already exist from a range of habitats, scales, and kinds of organisms.  相似文献

Summary The efficacy of nitrate addition, with and without inoculation with a sulfide-resistant strain ofThiobacillus denitrificans (strain F), in reducing sulfide levels in an experimental system using cores and subsurface formation water from a gas storage facility was examined. The addition of nitrate (40 mM) alone to the formation water injected into core systems operated at hydraulic retention times of 3.2 and 16.7 h resulted in lower effluent sulfide concentrations, from an influent concentration of about 170–190 M to an effluent concentration of 110 and 3 M, respectively. A reduction in effluent nitrate concentrations in both core systems indicated the presence of indigenous nitrate-using populations. After strain F was inoculated into the core system operated at the shorter retention time, the effluent sulfide concentration decreased from 110 to 16–25 M. The effluent sulfate concentration increased, and the effluent nitrate concentration decreased concomitant with the presence of high concentrations of denitrifying thiobacilli in the inoculated core system. The denitrifying thiobacilli detected after inoculation were presumed to be strain F since these organisms were not detected in this core system before inoculation, or in any of the samples from the uninoculated core system. These data suggest that the efficacy of the nitrate treatment may depend on the residence times of the liquids in the core system, and that inoculation with strain F was required to reduce sulfide levels to <20 M in the core system operated at a short hydraulic retention time.  相似文献
