Wellington Harbour supports large populations of the mussels Aulacomya maoriana, Mytilus galloprovincialis and Perna canaliculus that are almost entirely absent from nearby coastal locations in Cook Strait. We calculated scope for growth (SFG) using ambient Cook Strait water over a broad temporal scale and a broad range of seston conditions to determine if negative SFG explains this phenomenon. Although all three mussel species had positive mean SFG values, variation in SFG was high and negative values often occurred: A. maoriana 19.1 J g−1 h−1, 43% of mussels showed negative SFG; M. galloprovincialis 1.26, 52% negative SFG; P. canaliculus 45.6, 27% negative SFG. Negative SFG was most often due to negative absorption efficiency caused by metabolic faecal loss that is characteristic of mussels feeding in environments with low seston quality. From our ecophysiology data we constructed a model to estimate SFG based on physiological responses to the narrow range of seston conditions typical of Cook Strait (Model One), and a model to estimate SFG based on physiological responses of mussels to the broad range of seston conditions typical of Wellington Harbour and Cook Strait (Model Two). We used seston data collected over an 18-month period from sites in Wellington Harbour and Cook Strait to derive 159 estimates of species-specific mussel SFG from both models. Both models produced higher estimates of SFG for mussels in the Harbour compared with those at Cook Strait sites. This was consistent with elevated particulate concentrations in the Harbour than at Cook Strait sites, and in agreement with previous studies. For Cook Strait mussels, both models produced negative estimates of net energy balance for long periods of time (several months), whereas for Harbour mussels negative SFG estimates were generally short in duration. We conclude that our short-term laboratory-based determinations of SFG and our long-term bioenergetics modelling estimates do not conclusively support the hypothesis of food limitation for three coexisting taxa of mussels in the intertidal region of Cook Strait, New Zealand. Mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis) are the main bivalves cultured in the Mediterranean Sea and in the Thermaikos gulf North of Greece. Global warming might affect these cultures since increases in the sea temperatures especially during summertime and may cause mass mortalities. Thus projections of the effects of global warming and the knowledge of the mechanisms of thermal limitation and adaptation are considered important in this context. In the present work we studied the seasonal expression of Hsp70 and Hsp90 of aquacultured mussels in nature in an effort to examine whether mussels are seasonally thermally stressed. Moreover we determined the activity of the key glycolytic enzyme PK in order to examine seasonal changes in the metabolic profile. The present data showed a biphasic seasonal pattern in the expression of Hsps in the mantle and PAM of M. galloprovincialis. The expression of inducible Hsp72 and Hsp90 increased between February and mid April, and remained constant or decreased slightly by the end of May. Hsps expression started again in early June leading to a gradual increase by mid July and remained by the end of August. The pattern of the HSR indicates increased protein turnover or protein damage in the tissues of aquacultured M. galloprovincialis between winter and summer seasons. The induction temperature is probably limited, and beyond some upper limits there is no further change in the HSR induction temperatures and the HSR sets in. PK activity in the mantle was significantly higher in winter than in spring. Early May saw a reactivation of PK to higher than spring values. Similar to mantle PK, PK activity in PAM was significantly higher in winter than in spring. A slight reactivation was observed by the end of August.  相似文献

Small changes in environmental conditions can unexpectedly tip an ecosystem from one community type to another, and these often irreversible shifts have been observed in semi-arid grasslands, freshwater lakes and ponds, coral reefs, and kelp forests. A commonly accepted explanation is that these ecosystems contain multiple stable points, but experimental tests confirming multiple stable states have proven elusive. Here we present a novel approach and show that mussel beds and rockweed stands are multiple stable states on intertidal shores in the Gulf of Maine, USA. Using broad-scale observational data and long-term data from experimental clearings, we show that the removal of rockweed by winter ice scour can tip persistent rockweed stands to mussel beds. The observational data were analyzed with Anderson’s discriminant analysis of principal coordinates, which provided an objective function to separate mussel beds from rockweed stands. The function was then applied to 55 experimental plots, which had been established in rockweed stands in 1996. Based on 2005 data, all uncleared controls and all but one of the small clearings were classified as rockweed stands; 37% of the large clearings were classified as mussel beds. Our results address the establishment of mussels versus rockweeds and complement rather than refute the current paradigm that mussel beds and rockweed stands, once established, are maintained by site-specific differences in strong consumer control. The proliferation of genomic sequencing approaches has significantly impacted the field of phylogenetics. Target capture approaches provide a cost-effective, fast and easily applied strategy for phylogenetic inference of non-model organisms. However, several existing target capture processing pipelines are incapable of incorporating whole genome sequencing (WGS). Here, we develop a new pipeline for capture and de novo assembly of the targeted regions using whole genome re-sequencing reads. This new pipeline captured targeted loci accurately, and given its unbiased nature, can be used with any target capture probe set. Moreover, due to its low computational demand, this new pipeline may be ideal for users with limited resources and when high-coverage sequencing outputs are required. We demonstrate the utility of our approach by incorporating WGS data into the first comprehensive phylogenomic reconstruction of the freshwater mussel family Margaritiferidae. We also provide a catalogue of well-curated functional annotations of these previously uncharacterized freshwater mussel-specific target regions, representing a complementary tool for scrutinizing phylogenetic inferences while expanding future applications of the probe set.  相似文献

Mussels ( Mytilus sp.) from Sanriku Bay, NE Honshu, Japan were examined using morphological characters and electrophoretically detectable enzyme polymorphisms. Using both sets of criteria, the mussels were identified as M. galloprovincialis , the mediterranean mussel. This confirms an earlier opinion, which was based on morphological criteria alone, that the mediterranean mussel occurs on the mainland coast of Japan. Investigation of some early Japanese literature suggests that mussels did not occur in this area earlier this century, and M. galloprovincialis may have been introduced to the region of Kobe, around 1930–1935. The present-day distribution of M. edulis and M. galloprovincialis in the Japanese archipelago may be explained by sea-surface temperatures in the region.  相似文献
