The osteological development of the vertebral column and fins in shi drum Umbrina cirrosa was studied in order to improve knowledge for its introduction in Mediterranean aquaculture. The osteological development was studied in 171 individuals, of total length (LT) from 2·7 to 30·2 mm that were reared under the mesocosm technique. Vertebral ontogeny starts at 3·4 and 4·0 mm LT, with the formation of the first cartilaginous neural and haemal arches, and spines, respectively, and is completed with the full attainment of epicentrals (12·5 mm LT). The formation of vertebral centra occurs between 4·1 and 7·4 mm LT. Pectoral supports are the first fin elements to develop (3·0 mm LT), followed by those of the caudal fin (3·8 mm LT), pelvic fin (3·9 mm LT) and finally by those of the dorsal and anal fins (4·5 mm LT). The caudal fin is the first to develop fin rays and attain the full count of principal fin rays (4·5–6·8 mm LT), but the last to be fully completed with the formation of procurrent fin rays (6·9–17·5 mm LT). The next fins starting to present rays are the dorsal (5·3 mm LT) and the pectoral fins (5·6 mm LT), while the anal and pelvic fins are the last (5·7 mm LT). Following the caudal principal fin rays (6·8 mm LT), the dorsal, anal (6·9 mm LT), pelvic (7·4 mm LT) and pectoral fins (9·8 mm LT) are the next with fully completed ray counts. Aggregation of qualitative changes, such as the appearance of cartilages, the beginning and the complement of the ossification process and the full complement of elements in U. cirrosa were measured as cumulative frequency counts. These measurements reveal three ontogenetic intervals: one very developmentally active period during early life stages (from 3 to 5·9 mm LT), a second slower developmental period (from 6·0 to 8·9 mm LT) and finally a period of ontogeny more focused on structure refinement up to metamorphosis and settlement (>9·0 mm LT).  相似文献

Silicates have the potential to induce disease resistance in plants. Induction of nematode resistance usually results from paralysis of nurse cell development or activation of the hypersensitivity response. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of silicon (Si) treatment on the penetration and development of Meloidogyne javanica in various crops. The experiment was set up in a randomized (3 × 4) + 1 factorial design, with 3 Si sources (Silifort®, Rocksil® and wollastonite), 4 crops (maize, rice, common bean and soybean) and 1 treatment control (distilled water). The Si treatments included adding wollastonite to the soil 10 days prior to seedling transplantation, or spraying with solutions of Silifort® or Rocksil®, 2 days after seedlings transplantation. Twelve days after transplantation, the plants were inoculated with 1000 eggs and eventual second‐stage juveniles (J2) of M. javanica. At 3, 8, 13 and 18 days after inoculation (DAI), the plants were harvested and nematode penetration evaluated by optical microscopy. All Si treatments adversely affected development of M. javanica in soybean, common bean and rice and reduced nematode penetration of rice roots. Silifort® and wollastonite reduced nematode penetration in common bean and soybean roots, respectively. However, none of the Si treatments influenced the variables analysed in maize. The results of this study illustrate the potential of Si treatment to control M. javanica parasitism in plants.  相似文献

Larvae and juveniles of six species of Luciogobius were collected at Aritsu Beach on Okinawa Island using a small seine. Postflexion larvae were dominant during sampling and were collected when they approached the shoreline adjacent to or at the entrances to their adult habitats prior to settlement. Standard lengths of postflexion larvae ranged from 5.4 to 14.4 mm and varied depending on the species. The larvae occurred mainly from January to April, but some larvae were caught in October and November. Their pelagic larval durations were estimated to range from 17 to 36 days and varied depending on the species. Morphologies of field-caught larvae and juveniles and laboratory-reared juveniles were described. Six species were clearly distinguished based on fin ray and vertebral counts, proportions, body size, and pigment patterns. Although their taxonomic statuses could not be determined, it is thought that they have independent relatives in other regions.  相似文献

Abstract The survival of Aspidosperma quebracho‐blanco juveniles in the Arid Chaco is facilitated under the canopy of nurse plants. The possible effects of nurse plants were studied at intra‐ and interspecific levels by analysing the spatial distribution of juveniles and adults of A. quebracho‐blanco, of the main shrubs Larrea divaricata and Mimozyganthus carinatus, and of the group of deciduous and evergreen shrub species, and their pair associations. Data were analysed using the SADIE (Spatial Analysis by Distance Indices) software. A. quebracho‐blanco seedling abundance followed the distribution pattern of the main shade‐providing species: an aggregated spatial distribution pattern in most of the categories studied. The seedling bank of A. quebracho‐blanco also showed an aggregated pattern and was spatially associated with shrubs and adults of its own species. The intensity of the association depended on the functional types: deciduous Fabaceae, deciduous non‐Fabaceae, evergreen and conspecific adults, each of which provides a different canopy structure and therefore different amounts of shade. The spatial association was significant with the evergreen group, and less significant with the deciduous Fabaceae group. There was no positive association with deciduous non‐Fabaceae, or with gaps (open sky). The differences generated by canopy cover may influence the nurse effect, as observed in the intensity of association of A. quebracho‐blanco with shrubs and conspecific adults.  相似文献

The interactions between Meloidogyne javanica, Fusarium udum and Rhizobium on pigeon pea, in the presence of nickel (Ni) and cobalt (Co) as soil pollutants, were studied. In single inoculations, M. javanica caused a reduction in plant growth, particularly at higher inoculum levels (1000 and 10 000 JJ2). Fusarium udum induced wilting symptoms and the higher concentrations of Ni and Co suppressed plant growth. Meloidogyne javanica and F. udum interacted to show more severe wilting symptoms than F. udum alone. Wilting was completely inhibited by Ni but reductions in plant growth and nodulation occurred. In the presence of Ni, M. javanica did not cause galling but nodulation was suppressed. Cobalt also suppressed wilting and nodulation but interacted with M. javanica to increase root galling and to reduce plant growth by a greater amount than the total of reductions caused by the individual treatments.  相似文献

In this study, we examined whether levels of P4501A mRNA expression were naturally induced in feral fish, Liza saliens, and whether CYP1A protein levels and associated enzyme activity, EROD, were also increased. Induction of mRNA was measured using a nucleic acid hybridization technique. For the hybridization studies, a new 33-mer oligonucleotide probe 5'-dCTC ATC CAG CTT CCT GTC CTC GCA GTG ATC AAT-3' was designed, which corresponded to the totally conserved amino acid motif of CYP1A protein from positions 291 to 301 among the various fish species. Results of Northern blot analysis revealed that RNA isolated from the liver of mullet collected from the highly contaminated region of Izmir Bay with a dissolved and dispersed petroleum hydrocarbon content of 12.45 microg l(-1) gave a strong hybridization signal, whereas only a weak hybridization signal was detected in the liver RNA of fish caught from the reference site containing less than 1 microg l(-1) of petroleum hydrocarbons. Similarly, fish from the contaminated site had approximately 80 times more EROD activity than the feral fish captured from the reference site. Studies using polyclonal antibodies produced against purified mullet CYP1A also showed the similar trend. In conclusion, feral leaping mullet caught from contaminated water displayed induction of CYP1A at three levels of expression, namely, mRNA, apoprotein and catalytic activity.  相似文献

The birth of a new sibling is believed to signify an abrupt and important transition in a young primate's relationship with its mother-one that is of potential importance from at least three theoretical perspectives: attachment theory, parent-offspring conflict theory, and dynamic assessment models. This study examines changes in relationships between free-ranging yearling rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta) and their mothers concomitant with the birth of the mother's next infant, and tests predictions derived from each theoretical perspective. We observed 31 yearling rhesus on Cayo Santiago, Puerto Rico, 3 months before and 3 months after their siblings' births, using focal animal sampling methods. Changes in measures related to mother-yearling interaction and yearling distress were examined using repeated-measures analysis of variance. After sibling birth, mothers and yearlings abruptly reduced amounts of time in contact and increased amounts of time at a distance and out of sight of one another. Mothers and yearlings played approximately equal roles in bringing about decreases in proximity, and yearlings took the primary roles in bringing about decreases in contact. Rates of maternal aggression toward yearlings increased immediately and markedly after birth, possibly providing yearlings with early cues regarding subsequent decreased levels of maternal care. There were no marked increases in overt signs of yearling distress (e.g., vocalizations or tantrums) following the births. We conclude that yearlings generally acquiesced to reduced levels of care, responding behaviorally with increased independence and maturity. In this sense, our study provides preliminary support for dynamic assessment models over attachment theory and parent-offspring conflict theory models.  相似文献

基于2005年、2008年、2009年和2011年8月(夏季)在长江口水域(30°30'—31°45'N,121°15'—123°10'E)4个航次的浮游生物拖网资料,分析了长江口水域鱼卵和仔稚鱼的种类组成、数量分布特征及其年间变化。结果表明:4个航次采集的鱼卵和仔稚鱼鉴定到种的种类有17种,隶属于8目13科,以鲈形目种类最多,11种,其次是鲱形目,5种,其他各目种类均小于5种;种类数存在明显年间差异,2005年种类数最多(鱼卵3种,仔稚鱼8种),其次是2009年和2011年,2008年种类数最少(鱼卵1种,仔稚鱼5种)。优势种年间更替明显,长蛇鲻(Saurida elongata)、虾虎鱼(Gobiidae spp.)和中华小公鱼(Stolephorus chinensis)在2005年是优势种,2008年优势种为鳀鱼(Engraulis japonicus),2009年优势种为鳀鱼、寡鳞飘鱼(Pseudolaubuca engraulis)、虾虎鱼等,2011年虾虎鱼和小公鱼(包括小公鱼属未定种Stolephorus spp.和中华小公鱼Stolephorus chinensis)成为优势种。2005年鱼卵和仔稚鱼数量分布的密集区在嵊泗列岛附近水域,2008年鱼卵和仔稚鱼出现较少,未出现明显的数量密集区;2009年鱼卵数量较少,仔稚鱼数量较多,密集区主要分布在在长江口以外123°E附近水域;2011年鱼卵主要分布在在长江北支口门外附近水域,仔稚鱼在调查区内分布相对均匀。  相似文献

Increasing amounts of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) from human industrial activities are causing changes in global ocean carbonate chemistry, resulting in a reduction in pH, a process termed “ocean acidification.” It is important to determine which species are sensitive to elevated levels of CO2 because of potential impacts to ecosystems, marine resources, biodiversity, food webs, populations, and effects on economies. Previous studies with marine fish have documented that exposure to elevated levels of CO2 caused increased growth and larger otoliths in some species. This study was conducted to determine whether the elevated partial pressure of CO2 (pCO2) would have an effect on growth, otolith (ear bone) condition, survival, or the skeleton of juvenile scup, Stenotomus chrysops, a species that supports both important commercial and recreational fisheries. Elevated levels of pCO2 (1200–2600 μatm) had no statistically significant effect on growth, survival, or otolith condition after 8 weeks of rearing. Field data show that in Long Island Sound, where scup spawn, in situ levels of pCO2 are already at levels ranging from 689 to 1828 μatm due to primary productivity, microbial activity, and anthropogenic inputs. These results demonstrate that ocean acidification is not likely to cause adverse effects on the growth and survivability of every species of marine fish. X‐ray analysis of the fish revealed a slightly higher incidence of hyperossification in the vertebrae of a few scup from the highest treatments compared to fish from the control treatments. Our results show that juvenile scup are tolerant to increases in seawater pCO2, possibly due to conditions this species encounters in their naturally variable environment and their well‐developed pH control mechanisms.  相似文献

The life history of two Soleidae, the common sole, Solea solea, and the thickback sole, Microchirus variegatus, were compared in the Bay of Biscay in an attempt to set out factors which could explain settlement styles known to be different between juveniles of each species. Common sole juveniles had been shown to depend on coastal and estuarine nurseries, and the thickback sole to develop in open-sea nurseries, although the spawning grounds and spawning season of both species overlapped (offshore and at springtime, respectively). For this study, data on adult, juvenile and larva distributions were obtained from cruises carried out in the Bay of Biscay during the last decade. In addition, growth rate of larvae and planktonic interval duration, estimated by means of otolith increment analysis, were compared, as well as literature-derived information on behaviour of larvae. By comparing larval features, it appeared that thickback sole did not obtain the advantage of a slightly longer pelagic life span for an increased dispersal, due to an early shift to benthic behaviour. Other evidence was given by more specifically stated distributions that the further and deeper offshore spawning of M. variegatus, compared to S. solea, was a likely key-factor of the juvenile settlement process. This could explain why the thickback sole, contrary to the common sole, never reach coastal areas and thus settle offshore, in waters deeper than 30 m.  相似文献
