Aquatic and aerial respiration of the amphibious fishes Lipophrys pholis and Periophthalmus barbarus were examined using a newly designed flow-through respirometer system. The system allowed long-term measurements of oxygen consumption and carbon dioxide release during periods of aquatic and aerial respiration. The M o 2 of L. pholis , measured at 15° C, was 2·1 μmol O2 g–1 h–1 during aquatic and 1·99 μmol O2 g–1 h–1 during aerial exposure. The corresponding values of the M co2 were 1.67 and 1.59 μmol O2 g–1 h–1 respectively, giving an aquatic respiratory exchange ratio (RER) of 0·80 and an aerial RER of 0·79. The M o2 of P. barbarus , measured at 28°C, was 4·05 μmol O2 g–1 h–1 during aquatic and 3·44 μmol O2 g–1 h–1 during aerial exposure. The corresponding values of the Mco2 were 3·29 μmol CO2 g–1 h–1 and 2·63 μmol CO2 g–1 h–1 respectively, giving an aquatic RER of 0·81 and an aerial RER of 0·77. While exposed to air for at least 10 h, both species showed no decrease in metabolic rate or carbon dioxide release. The RER of these fishes equalled their respiratory quotient. After re-immersion an increased oxygen consumption, due to the payment of an oxygen debt, could not be detected. 相似文献

Fragments of mtDNA genes Cyt B, ATPase 6, and ATPase 8 of six cottoid fishes species of Lake Baikal (East Siberia) were amplified and sequenced. In addition mtDNAs of the same fish were subjected to restriction analysis. The data obtained were used to construct phylogenetic trees. The topology of the ATPase tree differs from those of the Res (restriction) and Cyt B trees. Clustering of species within the trees confirms the viewpoint of Taliev (1955, Baicalian Sculpins (Cottoidei)) according to which Baikalian cottoids originate from two ancestral forms. The times of branching obtained do not confirm the existing viewpoint according to which the two golomyankas (Comephorus baicalensis and Comephorus dybowskii) are pre-Baikal (Myocene) relicts: these two species may have originated 1.2–1.8 million years ago in Baikal, and they seem to represent an example of rapid morphological evolution which resulted in the formation of a new family.

In the giant-celled marine algae Valonia utricularis the turgor-sensing mechanism of the plasmalemma and the role of the tonoplast in turgor regulation is unknown because of
the lack of solid data about the individual electrical properties of the plasmalemma and the vacuolar membrane. For this reason,
a vacuolar perfusion technique was developed that allowed controlled manipulation of the vacuolar sap under turgescent conditions
(up to about 0.3 MPa). Charge-pulse relaxation studies on vacuolarly perfused cells at different turgor pressure values showed
that the area-specific resistance of the total membrane barrier (tonoplast and plasmalemma) exhibited a similar dependence
on turgor pressure as reported in the literature for nonperfused cells: the resistance assumed a minimum value at the physiological
turgor pressure of about 0.1 MPa. The agreement of the data suggested that the perfusion process did not alter the transport
properties of the membrane barrier.
Addition of 16 μm of the H+-carrier FCCP (carbonylcyanide p-trifluoromethoxyphenyhydrazone) to the perfusion solution resulted in a drop of the total membrane potential from +4 mV to
−22 mV and in an increase of the area-specific membrane resistance from 6.8 × 10−2 to 40.6 × 10−2Ωm2. The time constants of the two exponentials of the charge pulse relaxation spectrum increased significantly. These results
are inconsistent with the assumption of a high-conductance state of the tonoplast (R. Lainson and C.P. Field, J. Membrane Biol.
29:81–94, 1976).
Depending on the site of addition, the pore-forming antibiotics nystatin and amphotericin B affected either the time constant
of the fast or of the slow relaxation (provided that the composition of the perfusion solution and the artificial sea water
were replaced by a cytoplasma-analogous medium). When 50 μm of the antibiotics were added externally, the fast relaxation process disappeared. Contrastingly, the slow relaxation process
disappeared upon vacuolar addition. The antibiotics cannot penetrate biomembranes rapidly, and therefore, the findings suggested
that the fast and slow relaxations originated exclusively from the electrical properties of the plasmalemma and the tonoplast
respectively. This interpretation implies that the area-specific resistance of the tonoplast is significantly larger than
that of the plasmalemma (consistent with the FCCP data) and that the area-specific capacitance of the tonoplast is unusually
high (6.21 × 10−2 Fm−2 compared to 0.77 × 10−2 Fm−2 of the plasmalemma). Thus, we have to assume that the vacuolar membrane of V. utricularis is highly folded (by a factor of about 9 in relation to the geometric area) and/or contains a fairly high concentration of
mobile charges of an unknown electrogenic ion carrier system.

Multielement analysis was performed on bone samples extracted from the femora of 39 adults from three mortuary sites (Johns Mound, Santa Catalina de Guale, and Santa Catalina de Guale de Santa Meria) and time periods (late preagricultural, early contact, and late contact) in the Georgia Bight. This study was used to investigate whether elemental analysis would support or contradict other lines of data regarding diets and dietary change previously generated for the region. The data are in agreement with an earlier interpretation, based on stable isotopes, that dietary maize increases through time but fails to support the idea that marine resources decreased in importance. Synopsis In a high salinity estuary at North Inlet, South Carolina, co-occurrence and possible competition among adults of four dominant zooplanktivorous fishes were minimized by seasonal adjustments in lateral and vertical distributions as well as in dietary preferences. In winter, Atlantic silversides, Menidia menidia, occupied the entire water column while other planktivores were rare or absent from the estuary, and they consumed large prey such as mysid shrimps and fish larvae. An immigration of bay anchovies, Anchoa mitchilli, in the spring resulted in a redistribution of species with Atlantic silversides shifting to the surface waters and bay anchovies dominating the lower half of the water column. Both fishes consumed mostly copepods in the spring, but each favored a different species. There was little similarity in the large prey items consumed by the two fishes. Striped anchovies, Anchoa hepsetus, arrived in mid-summer and were most abundant at the surface while bay anchovies continued to dominate the bottom waters. Atlantic silversides were rare in all summer collections. The diets of the two anchovies were similar, but vertical separation during the period of maximum zooplankton abundance probably minimized competition. Rough silversides, Membras martinica, which were obligate surface dwellers, shared the upper water column with striped anchovies, but the two species had very different diets during their period of co-occurrence. Although seasonal changes in fish diets reflected shifts in zooplankton composition and all fishes consumed a variety of prey types, preferences for some prey taxa and total avoidance of others were indicated. Electivity indices indicated an especially strong selection for fiddler crab megalopae by all fishes in the summer and fall. All fishes, except rough silversides, which fed almost exclusively on copepods and crab zoeae, consumed large prey items when they were available. Fine scale partitioning of the food resources was apparent in the selection of different copepod and insect species by the fishes. Spatial and temporal separation in the distribution and/or dietary preferences of the zooplanktivores fishes probably reduces the potential for resource competition. Given the high abundances and selectivity of the planktivores, significant impacts on some zooplankton populations probably result. 相似文献

Synopsis Turbot sperm motility is observed using dark field microscopy and stroboscopic illumination combined with video recording. Sperm motility is triggered by dilution of spermatozoa in sea water or in non ionic media (glucose or saccharose), presenting osmotic pressure ranging from 300 to 2100 mOsmol. The percentage of motile spermatozoa reaches 100% under conditions of osmotic pressure of 300 to 1100 mOsmol and pH close to 8.0. In full sea water, glucose or saccharose solutions an agglutination of spermatozoa is observed; this is prevented by addition of bovine serum albumin (5 mg ml–1). Immediately after transfer in activation solutions, 100% spermatozoa are motile in most samples freshly stripped. This percentage drops suddenly between 15 and 30% after 70 to 100 sec. The beat frequency remains at a constant value of 50 Hz during 40 s post activation and then drops suddenly between 15 and 30 Hz. The spermatozoa velocity is about 200 micrometers s–1 during 30 to 40 s and then declines to a stable value of 100 micrometers s–1 at 50 s post activation. After 1.20 mn, more and more spermatozoa become motionless. The minimum calculated and averaged distance covered during 1.20 min, is about 12 mm. The high performances of turbot spermatozoa motility are interpreted as a compensatory mechanism for the low sperm production. 相似文献

Synopsis Nocturnal foraging habitats of Haemulon flavolineatum and H. sciurus were investigated in the backreef habitat around Tobacco Caye, Belize. Grunts leave the reef at dusk to forage in the grass beds and sand flats surrounding the reef. The hypothesis that French and bluestriped grunts use separate foraging habitats was examined by following tagged fishes from their diurnal territories or schooling sites to nocturnal foraging grounds. The tag consisted of a small, glowing Cyalume light stick sutured to the dorsal musculature of the fish, next to the first dorsal fin. Surveys of foraging habitats were done to support the tracking study. Large quadrats (225 m2) were set out over the sand flats and grass beds during the day. The numbers of French and bluestriped grunts feeding in each habitat were counted one hour after dark. Foraging French grunts used sand flats, whereas bluestriped grunts usually fed in grass beds. Repeated sightings of two French grunts and one bluestriped grunt in the same individual night-time locations support the hypothesis that nocturnal foraging sites may be used repeatedly by the same individuals. 相似文献
