Summary The flagella of the pigmented algaEpipyxis pulchra (Chrysophyceae) were observed with image enhanced video microscopy to play an active role in gathering, physically seizing and selecting prey prior to phagocytosis. Vegetative unicells of this sessile, freshwater species possess two structurally and functionally distinct flagella, both active in feeding. During prey gathering the long flagellum, which is adorned with stiff hairs, beats rapidly to direct a strong water current towards the cell while the short, smooth flagellum moves very little. When a potential food particle is drawn by the current to contact the flagellar surfaces, the long flagellum stops beating and positions itself, in concert with the short flagellum, to seize the prey between them. Both flagella then briefly rotate the prey before selecting or rejecting it. If rejected, the particle is discarded by the coordinated activity of both flagella. If selected as food, the prey is held in place until a complex collecting cup emanates out from a position near the basal bodies and engulfs it. The cup plus enclosed food particle, now a food vacuole, is then retracted back to the cell proper.  相似文献

A number of highly purified polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) isomers and congeners were synthesized and administered to male Wistar rats at dosage levels of 30 and 150 μmol · kg−1. The effects of this in vivo treatment on the drug-metabolizing enzymes were determined by measuring the microsomal benzo[a]pyrene (B[a]P) hydroxylase, dimethylaminoantipyrine (DMAP) N-demethylase and NADPH-cytochrome c reductase enzyme activities, the cytochrome b5 content and the relative peak intensities and spectral shifts of the reduced microsomal cytochrome P-450: CO and ethylisocyanide (EIC) binding difference spectra. The results were compared to the effects of administering phenobarbitone (PB), 3-methylcholanthrene (MC) and PB plus MC (coadministered) to the test animals. The synthetic PCB congeners used in this study included 3,4,4′,5-tetrachlorobiphenyl (TCBP-1), 2,3′,4,4′-tetrachlorobiphenyl (TCBP-2), 2,3′,4,4′,5′-pentachlorobiphenyl (PCBP-1), 2,3,4,4′,5-pentachlorobiphenyl (PCBP-2), 2,3,3′,4,4′,5-hexachlorobiphenyl (HCBP-1), 2,3,3′,4′,5,6-hexachlorobiphenyl (HCBP-2), 2,3,3′,5,5′,6-hexachlorobiphenyl (HCBP-3), 2,2′,3,5,5′,6-hexachlorobiphenyl (HCBP-4) and 2,3,3′,4,5,5′-hexachlorobiphenyl (HCBP-5) and were used to reappraise the structure-activity rules for PCBs as hepatic microsomal enzyme inducers. The results suggested that (a) PCBs which induce MC or mixed-type activity must be substituted at both para positions, at least two meta positions but not necessarily on the same phenyl ring and can also contain one ortho chloro substituent; (b) due to the considerable structural diversity of the PB-type inducers the rules for induction of this activity by PCB congeners are not readily defined.  相似文献

At dosage levels of 30 and 150 mumol . kg-1, pretreatment with 2,3,3',4,4'-pentachlorobiphenyl (PCBP-II), 2,3',4,4',5-pentachlorobiphenyl (PCBP-I), 2,3,3',4,4',5-hexachlorobiphenyl (HCBP-II) and 2,3,3',4,4',5-hexachlorobiphenyl (HCBP-III) gave hepatic microsomes with enzymic and spectral properties consistent with a mixed pattern of induction. These polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) isomers and congeners have been identified as either major or minor components of the commercial PCB mixtures and must contribute to their activity as MC-type inducers. The only PCB isomer in this series which was not a mixed type inducer was 2,3',4,4',5,5'-hexachlorobiphenyl (HCBP-I) which appeared to be a PB-type inducer. This contrasted to the mixed-type activity observed for 2,3',4,4',5,5'-hexabromobiphenyl which was isolated from a commercial polybrominated biphenyl (PBB) mixture.  相似文献

There have been multiple claims that exposing water to a static magnetic field affects its properties which influence living systems. To test this hypothesis, planarian subsequent to dissection were maintained in spring water that had been previously exposed for only one day to one of three (16, 160, or 1,600 G) intensity static magnetic fields or to a reference condition. Although there was no significant difference in regeneration rates over the subsequent seven-day period, there was a statistically significant nonlinear effect for planarian mobility and diffusion rates. Both mobility rates and diffusion velocity of a liquid within the water that had been exposed to the 16 G field was about twice that for water exposed to the other intensities. These results imply that nonlinear biophysical effects may emerge under specific conditions of intensity ranges for particular volumes of water.  相似文献

Spiders can use air particle movements to localize moving prey. We studied the responses of 32 wind-sensitive interneurones in the hunting spider Cupiennius salei to prey stimuli. Stimulation with a tethered flying fly or with artificial air pulses activated plurisegmental interneurones that responded to changes in air movement velocity and were thus well suited to represent the highly fluctuating air stream typical of prey stimuli. In most interneurones (n = 18) the responses to the stimulation of different legs were not significantly different from each other. Different interneurones had different response characteristics and their latencies largely overlapped suggesting that there is parallel processing of the signals by populations of interneurones with different response characteristics. In two interneurones the number of spikes and the spiking pattern elicited by stimulation of each of the eight legs markedly differed depending on the leg stimulated. These neurones may play an important role in directional information processing. Stimulation of the adjacent legs from front to back or from back to front revealed two interneurones sensitive to the direction of successive stimulation of the legs. These neurones may be able to detect the motion of an air movement source in a preferred direction and thus act as nearfield motion detectors to localize a moving prey item. PurposeSeveral magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) techniques exploit the difference in magnetic susceptibilities between tissues, but systematic measurements of tissue susceptibility are lacking. Furthermore, there is the question as to whether chemical fixation that is used for ex vivo MRI studies, affects the magnetic properties of the tissue. Here, we determined the magnetic susceptibility and water content of fresh and chemically fixed mouse tissue.MethodsMass susceptibility of brain, heart, liver and skeletal muscle samples were determined on a vibrating sample magnetometer at room temperature. Measurements at 50, 125, 200 and 295 K were performed to assess the temperature dependence of susceptibility. Moreover, we measured water content of fresh and fixed samples.ResultsAll samples show mass susceptibilities between −0.068 and −1.929 × 10−8 m3/kg, compared to −9.338 × 10−9 m3/kg of double distilled water. Heart tissue has a more diamagnetic susceptibility than the other tissues. Compared to fresh tissue, fixed tissue has a less diamagnetic susceptibility. Fixed tissue was not different in water content to fresh tissue and showed no consistent dependence of susceptibility with temperature, whereas fresh tissue shows a decrease to at least 125 K, indicative of a paramagnetic component.ConclusionsBiological tissues are diamagnetic in comparison to water, where the heart is more diamagnetic than the other tissues, with paramagnetic contributions. Fixation rendered tissue less diamagnetic compared to fresh tissue. Our measurements revealed differences in tissue susceptibility between VSM and QSM, inviting more research to compare susceptibility-based MRI methods with physical measurements of tissue susceptibility.  相似文献

A novel method for assessing the accuracy of inertial/magnetic sensors is presented. The method, referred to as the “residual matrix” method, is advantageous because it decouples the sensor's error with respect to Earth's gravity vector (attitude residual error: pitch and roll) from the sensor's error with respect to magnetic north (heading residual error), while remaining insensitive to singularity problems when the second Euler rotation is close to ±90°. As a demonstration, the accuracy of an inertial/magnetic sensor mounted to a participant's forearm was evaluated during a reaching task in a laboratory. Sensor orientation was measured internally (by the inertial/magnetic sensor) and externally using an optoelectronic measurement system with a marker cluster rigidly attached to the sensor's enclosure. Roll, pitch and heading residuals were calculated using the proposed novel method, as well as using a common orientation assessment method where the residuals are defined as the difference between the Euler angles measured by the inertial sensor and those measured by the optoelectronic system. Using the proposed residual matrix method, the roll and pitch residuals remained less than 1° and, as expected, no statistically significant difference between these two measures of attitude accuracy was found; the heading residuals were significantly larger than the attitude residuals but remained below 2°. Using the direct Euler angle comparison method, the residuals were in general larger due to singularity issues, and the expected significant difference between inertial/magnetic sensor attitude and heading accuracy was not present.  相似文献

We investigated the application of fungus Phallus impudicus loaded γ-Fe2O3 nanoparticles as a biosorbent for magnetic solid phase extractions of trace levels of Zn(II) and Cr(III) ions from natural samples before their measurements by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry. The characterization of magnetized P. impudicus was performed using the scanning electron microscope, the energy dispersive X-ray and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Important experimental factors were investigated. The experimental results fitted well to the Langmuir adsorption model and pseudo-second order kinetic model. Limit of detections of targeted ions by magnetic solid phase extraction method based on use of P. impudicus were found as 10.5 ngL−1 and 12.6 ngL−1 respectively for Cr(III) and Zn(II). The sorption capacities of the biosorbent were 22.8 mgg−1 for Cr(III) and 25.6 mgg−1 for Zn(II). The preconcentration factors were achieved as 100 for both of ions. RSDs for inter- and intraday precisions were found as lower than 2.0% and 2.1% respectively for both of targeted ions. The accuracy of the recommended process was tested by recovery measurements on the certificated reference materials and successfully applied for quantification recoveries of Cr(III) and Zn(II) ions from water and food samples.  相似文献
