The dental awareness and needs of a Parkinson's disease population

The dental awareness and needs of a population with Parkinson's disease were assessed by means of postal questionnaires sent to members of Parkinson's disease societies of Belfast and London. A total of 228 valid replies were received representing a response rate of 31%. Results showed that dental problems were reported often, xerostomia and burning sensation being at least twice that of the general population. Satisfaction with dental care was high although it was significantly reduced in those with loose dentures and burning sensation. The results of this study support a greater participation by dentists in the planning and provision of healthcare for sufferer of Parkinson's disease.     

Alkaloids of melodinus guillauminii

Fourteen alkaloids were isolated from the stem bark and aerial parts of Melodinus guillauminii. They were 11-hydroxytabersonine, venalstonine, venalstonidine, 14,15-seco-3-oxokopsinal, 3-oxovenalstonine, 11-methoxy-Δ¹⁴– vincamenine, 3-oxo-hydroxykopsinine, 11-methoxy-Δ¹⁴-vincanol, kopsinine, 15-α-hydroxykopsinine, 11-methoxy- tabersonine, pleiocarpamine, 19-β-hydroxyvenalstonine and guillauminiine.     

Studies on bone marrow histogenesis: Morphometric and autoradiographic studies of regenerating marrow stroma in extramedullary autoimplants and after evacuation of marrow cavity

Summary The marrow cavity of the rat tibia was mechanically evacuated and autoimplanted to the subcutaneous tissue. The regenerative process which restored the integrity of marrow stroma and hemopoiesis, was morphometrically evaluated in whole mount of tibia. Following evacuation, the clot filled the cavity. The granulation tissue then appeared and expanded, penetrating and replacing the clot. The fibroblasts of the granulation tissue differentiated into osteoblasts forming osteoid bone. Within its interstices, the primordial marrow consisting of loose connective tissue and vascular sinuses appeared and hemopoiesis resumed. Expansion of hemopoiesis resulted in the resorption of bone and within three weeks the tibial cavity was restored to the pre-evacuation state.Autoradiography indicated that the labeling index was initially high in fibroblasts and osteoblasts but was subsequently reduced while it increased in osteocytes, cells of Haversian canals, stromal and hemopoietic cells of marrow. The finding is in disagreement with the view that the regenerative process originates from the Haversian canal. When the label was introduced on day 4 post-operatively, it subsequently appeared in osteocytes, cells of Haversian canal, stromal elements of the marrow, but not in the hemopoietic cells. Acute abdominal vagotomy reduces drinking to peripheral but not central angiotensin II

Rats were tested two or three days after bilateral abdominal vagotomy or a laparotomy control procedure for their drinking responses to subcutaneous (1 mg-kg-1) or intracerebroventricular (100 ng) injections of angiotensin II. Vagotomy delayed the initiation of drinking and decreased 60-min water intake after subcutaneous, but not after intracerebroventricular, angiotensin II. This is the shortest postoperative interval in which the decrease in drinking after systemic injection of angiotensin II by abdominal vagotomy has been observed. The failure of vagotomy to decrease the response to intracerebroventricular angiotensin II demonstrates that the deficit after subcutaneous injection was not a nonspecific effect of recent vagotomy. These results, therefore, suggest that the abdominal vagus is necessary for normal drinking in response to circulating angiotensin II. Furthermore, the selective and acute onset of the deficit is consistent with the loss of a specific, rather than tonic facilitatory, vagal mechanism for drinking after elevation of circulating angiotensin II levels. Finally, the results imply that the physiological mechanisms which mediate the drinking responses to central and peripheral angiotensin are not identical.     

Increased Neopterin Levels in Brains of Patients with Human Immunodeficiency Virus Type 1 Infection

Postmortem levels of native neopterin (D-erythro-neopterin) were measured in cerebral cortical samples from 44 human immunodeficiency virus type 1-infected and eight uninfected, nonneurological control patients. Cerebral cortical gray and white matter neopterin levels for the controls ranged from 0.5 to 7.2 pmol/mg of protein in contrast to neopterin levels in brains of the virus-infected patients, which frequently were more than threefold and occasionally more than 30-fold higher than mean control levels. Cortical neopterin levels did not correlate with severity of the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome dementia complex, but subcortical levels correlated with the presence of active human immunodeficiency virus type 1 infection, as reflected by pathological evidence of multinucleated giant cell encephalitis. Evidence of opportunistic cytomegalovirus infections in approximately 25% of the human immunodeficiency virus type 1-infected patients was associated with enhanced levels of neopterin in frontal cortex.     

Heritability of,and relationships between phosphorus and nitrogen concentration in shoot,stolon and root of white clover (Trifolium repens L.)

Ninety eight white clover genotypes were cloned and grown in pots at two levels of phosphorus (P) supply in soil. After harvest the nitrogen (N) and P content of shoot (leaf, petiole and unrooted stolon), stolon and root tissue was determined. Broad sense heritabilities for %N, %P, and proportion of total N or P in each tissue type were calculated. Heritabilities ranged from 0.22 to 0.68. They were generally higher for %P than %N; and higher in shoot and stolon tissue than root tissue for %P, %N, and proportion of N or P. Level of P in which plants were grown had little effect on heritability values. Genotypes from bred cultivars differed from those collected from hill country pastures for plant size, and partitioning of N and P to shoot, stolon and root. Relationships between plant characters were examined to determine the consequences of selection.     

INTERACTIONS BETWEEN KURIL SEALS AND SALMON TRAP NET FISHERY IN THE COASTAL WATERS OF SOUTHEASTERN HOKKAIDO

An annual average of 163 Kuril seals was found dead in two years in salmon trap nets along the coastal waters of the Nemuro Peninsula and adjacent areas. The seal-caused damage to the total salmon catch at the salmon trap nets was concentrated in some of them, particularly No. 27, where seals killed or injured 5.1% of the catch in 1982, and 1.8% in 1983. Based on the proportion of Kuril seals among the dead seals in the trap nets, it was estimated that Kuril seals damaged 4.7% of the total salmon catch at No. 27 in 1982, and 1.7% in 1983. Not all seals that entered the trap net drowned; some killed or damaged salmon, and then escaped.
