We wanted to determine whether the microevolution of the mouse salivary androgen-binding protein (ABP) Alpha subunit gene (Abpa) could mediate sexual selection and thereby have a potential role in maintaining gene pool integrity where radiating mouse subspecies make secondary contact. This hypothesis is based upon previous work in this laboratory, which has shown that each subspecies apparently has its own allele and that these alleles have a 25-fold excess of nonsynonymous/synonymous base substitutions compared to an average protein under purifying selection. We provide direct evidence for ABP-assortative mate selection in a laboratory setting: Mus musculus domesticus and M. m. musculus female mice recognize and discriminate between the territories of male mice that essentially differ solely in their Abpa genotype and, when the males are present, the female prefers to mate with the one of her own ABP type. The observation that females could differentiate between the territories of the two males when those mice were absent suggests that the males marked their territories with ABP. In this study, we also detected ABP on the pelts of male mice and in their environment. It is likely that the animals apply the protein to their pelts by licking and that it is then deposited in their surroundings. We suggest that females of the two subspecies are able to discriminate between males of those subspecies on the basis of this protein molecule. Mouse salivary ABP might present a worthwhile system with which to study a prezygotic isolation mechanism in a mammal.  相似文献

A 4.9 m TL megamouth shark, only the sixth specimen known to science, was tracked continuously for 50.5 h, during which it exhibited distinct vertical migrations at the dawn and dusk transitions. The male shark was captured on 21 October 1990 in a drift gill net off Dana Point, California, restrained overnight in a harbor, and released at sea the next afternoon. Horizontally, the shark moved slowly southward, covering 62 km on a relatively straight path with no significant diel changes. For the major part of the tracking, its rate of movement was 1.15 km h–1, as determined from positions at 15 min intervals. Considering a probable head current of 10–25 cm sec–1, its estimated through-the-water swimming speed was more likely 1.5–2.1 km h–1 (X¯ = 1.8, representing 0.1 body lengths sec–1). Vertically, the shark stayed shallow at night (12–25 m depth range, X¯ = 17) and deep during the days (120–166 m, X¯ = 149) but still well above the bottom at 700–850 m. The four twilight depth-change events were very distinct and always spanned the times of sunset or sunrise. The ascent and descent profiles are a reasonble match to isolumes on the order of 0.4 lux for an extinction coefficient (0.07) calculated from water transparency measurements. Furthermore, the steepest parts of the shark's profiles correspond closely to the times of maximum rate-of-change of illumination. These findings suggest that, except during nights, the shark's chosen depth was to a large degree determined by light level.  相似文献

Bluegills, Lepomis macrochirus, form schools and use shade to avoid predators. How light intensity, predators, and experience might affect antipredator behavior of bluegill are not well understood. Hence, we evaluated use of shade and schooling by naive (hatchery) and experienced (wild) bluegills (50–60 mm total length) at four light levels (1.5, 85, 169, 340 lux) in the presence and absence of a model predator in experimental pools. Naive bluegills used shade extensively at all light levels, even when the predator was in the shade. They rarely schooled, preferring to shoal in the shade. Experienced bluegill used shade when the predator was in the open and avoided shade when the predator was there. Schooling was more prevalent at low light levels when shade was less intense. Use of shade became an increasingly important behavior at higher light levels, unless the predator was in the shade. A shaded predator caused experienced bluegills to shoal tightly in the opposite, open area. These data suggest naive bluegills may not have considered the model predator a threat. Their behavior suggests avian predator avoidance, a possibility given that avian predators were present at the hatchery. Experienced bluegill employed behaviors that would be useful in avoiding piscine predators.  相似文献

Varroa jacobsoni reproduces in honey bee brood cells. Here the behavioral activity and use of space by infestingVarroa females and progeny were quantified in transparent artificial brood cells. The time-activity budget of both infesting and developing mites converged toward a stable pattern which was established during the bee prepupal stage of the infesting mites and the protonymphal stage of mite progeny. The pattern was such that infesting females and offspring eventually divided their activity between the fecal accumulation on the cell wall, which served as the rendezvous site for newly molted individuals, and the feeding site prepared on the pupa by the foundress. Other parts of the cell wall were used for oviposition and molting, away from the fecal accumulation on which activity of mobile stages was concentrated. Space structuring and the time-activity budget inVarroa probably evolved to enhance the number of fertilized females produced within the capped brood, where space and time are limiting factors. These behavioral adaptations parallel those of other mite species which show group behavior within cavities.  相似文献

Colonies ofBelonogaster petiolata in Gauteng (South Africa) produced reproductive offspring (gynes and males) in late January and early February of each nesting season; their appearance was associated with a decline in worker and brood numbers. Brood decline could commence in the presence of a dominant, reproductively active queen, and loss or removal of the queen was not followed directly by cessation of nest growth and brood care. An older worker usually took over the α-position in queenless colonies. Several factors appear to contribute to brood decline and, ultimately, termination of the colony cycle in this species. These include (1) cessation of the supply of solid food to colonies (and particularly their larvae) during the reproductive phase, (2) a decrease in the worker/larva ratio during the latter phase due to the progressive loss of workers, (3) increasing number of gynes and males, and (4) an adult priority over food reception from foragers.  相似文献

Whether female crickets choose among males based on characteristics of the courtship song is uncertain, but in many species, males not producing courtship song do not mate. In the house cricket,Acheta domesticus, we examined whether a female chose or rejected a male based on his size, latency to chirp, latency to produce courtship song, or rate of the high-frequency pulse of courtship song (“court rate”). We confirmed that females mated only with males that produced courtship song, but we found no evidence that the other factors we measured affected a female’s decision to mate. In addition, we investigated whether the outcome of male agonistic encounters affected the subsequent production of courtship song. In one experiment, we observed courtship and mating behavior when a single female was placed with a pair of males following a 10-min interaction period between the two males. Winners of male agonistic encounters had higher mating success. However, winners and losers of agonistic encounters were not different in their likelihood or latency to produce courtship song or in the number of times they were disrupted by the other male in the pair. In a second experiment, we allowed two males to interact for a 10-min period, but following this interaction period, we placed a female with each male separately and observed courtship and mating behavior. The mating success of winners and losers was not different under these circumstances, and we found no differences between winners and losers in any subsequent courtship or mating behavior examined. We conclude that winning agonistic encounters influences a male’s mating success in ways other than his production of courtship song and this effect is lost when winning and losing males are separated and each is given an opportunity to mate.  相似文献

The flight behavior of Anopheles gambiae s.s. Giles and An. stephensi Patton exposed to different odor cues was studied in a wind tunnel. Odors consisted of CO2, CO2 + acetone (at two concentrations), and CO2 + 1-octen-3-ol. Mosquitoes were released singly and their behavior was recorded on video. Parameters studied included flight velocity, percentage of time spent flying, percentage of time spent in plume, and number of turns toward the plume. Large differences in behavior toward the odors tested were observed. An. gambiaedid not respond well to CO 2,whereas An. stephansiwas positively affected by this compound. In contrast, An. gambiaeresponded significantly to CO 2 + acetone (at a low concentration), but the behavior of An. stephensiwas completely suppressed by this combination of odor stimuli. CO 2 + a high concentration of acetone or CO 2 + 1-octen-3-ol did not cause significant effects in An. gambiaecompared to no odor, while these treatments elicited strong behavioral responses in An. stephensi. The latter species responded particularly well to CO 2 + 1-octen-3-ol. The results suggest that the observed differences may be inherent to the known differences in host preferences, where An. gambiaeis highly anthropophilic and An. stephensimore zoophilic. This would explain why the latter species responds well to CO 2 and even better to CO 2 + 1-octen-3-ol, a compound readily emitted by bovine ruminants.  相似文献

I studied dominance relations in a wild group of bonobos at Wamba, Democratic Republic of Congo. Although agonistic interactions between males occurred frequently, most of them consisted only of display, and physical attacks were infrequent. Dominance rank order seemed to exist among males, but its linearity is unclear. Dominant males rarely disturbed copulatory behavior by subordinate males. However, high-ranking males usually stayed in the central position of the mixed party and, so, would have more chance of access to estrous females. Among females, older individuals tended to be dominant over younger individuals. However, agonistic interactions between females occurred rather infrequently, and most consisted of displacement without any overt aggressive behavior. Dominance between males and females is unclear, but females tended to have priority of access to food. The close social status between males and females may be related to the prolonged estrus of females and their close aggregation during ranging. Existence of a male's mother in the group and her dominance status among females seemed to influence his dominance rank among males. Young adult males whose mothers were alive in the group tended to have high status. In some cases, change in dominance between high-ranking males was preceded by a corresponding change in dominance between their mothers. As the dominance status of females is similar to that of males, mothers may be able to support their sons to achieve high status, stay in the center of the mixed party, and so have greater access to females, which may maximize the number of descendants of the mothers.  相似文献

We examined alternative hypotheses for the benefits of footdrummingin the presence of snakes by the banner-tailed kangaroo rat,Dipodomys spectabitis, by testing whether the target of thesignal includes conspecifics, the predator or both. Footdrummingrecorded in the field revealed that rats altered their footdrummingsignatures when drumming at snakes. In playback tests, however, neighbors failed to show any measurable change in behavior tobroadcasts of the snake drumming pattern, but mothers footdrummedsignificantly more than nonmothen in the presence of a tetheredsnake. Gopher snakes, Pituophis melanolsucus affinis, respondedto footdrumming vibrations created by a mechanical thumper.Nonhungry snakes avoided footdrumming, while hungry snakes approachedthe seismic footdrumming. Snakes decreased stalking rates asfootdrumming increased, but they spent more time stalking drummingthan nondnimming rats. We conclude that D. spectabilis footdrumsin individual defense and in parental care, rather than to warnadult conspecfics. Footdrumming deters pursuit by informingthe snake that the rat is alert and the chances of predationare low. We find little evidence that footdrumming startles, confuses, or harasses the snake. Hungry gopher snakes, however, may locate prey by eavesdropping on territorial footdrumming  相似文献
