Stingless bees (Meliponini) are one of only two highly eusocial bees, the other being the well studied honey bee (Apini). Unlike Apini, with only 11 species in the single genus Apis, stingless bees are a large and diverse taxon comprising some 60 genera, many of which are poorly known. This is the first attempt to infer a phylogeny of the group that includes the world fauna and extensive molecular data. Understanding the evolutionary relationships of these bees would provide a basis for behavioural studies within an evolutionary framework, illuminating the origins of complex social behaviour, such as the employment of dance and sound to communicate the location of food or shelter. In addition to a global phylogeny, we also provide estimates of divergence times and ancestral biogeograhic distributions of the major groups. Bayesian and maximum likelihood analyses strongly support a principal division of Meliponini into Old and New World groups, with the Afrotropical+Indo‐Malay/Australian clades comprising the sister group to the large Neotropical clade. The meliponine crown clade is inferred to be of late Gondwanan origin (approximately 80 Mya), undergoing radiations in the Afrotropical and Indo‐Malayan/Australasian regions, approximately 50–60 Mya. In the present study, spermatozoa of the Prorops nasuta (Hymenoptera: Bethylidae) parasitoid were described morphologically. This is the first publication to describe a species belonging to the superfamily Chrysidoidea. Light and transmission electron microscopy were used. The spermatozoa of P. nasuta are linear, with a mean length of 665 μm. The acrosome is composed of an acrosomal vesicle and a perforatorium. The nucleus measures approximately 17 μm in length and is circular at its cross-section; however, its anterior extremity is oval. The chromatin is electron-dense and compact, although there are clear areas in the posterior peripheral regions. In the nucleus-flagellum transition region, the cross-section of the centriole adjunct is oval, with a pleated border and an E-PTA-positive peripheral region. The axoneme shows a 9 + 9 + 2 microtubule arrangement. The microtubules are E-PTA positive and, at the posterior extremity, the accessories are the last to terminate. The diameters and shapes of the two mitochondrial derivatives are almost identical. One begins beside the nuclear base and the other after the centriole adjunct. Posteriorly, they terminate together, immediately before the axoneme. Both have mitochondrial cristae and a region of paracrystalline material; however, the format and arrangement of this material differs from those of all other species previously studied. The paracrystalline material is more strongly E-PTA positive than the cristae region. Accessories bodies are electron-dense and located between the mitochondrial derivatives and the axoneme. In general, P. nasuta spermatozoa are similar to those of the majority of Hymenoptera; however, they have various exclusive characteristics that may be useful for studying the phylogeny and taxonomy of the superfamily Chrysidoidea and of Hymenoptera in general.  相似文献

Infochemicals are the most important cues used by parasitoids for host location. The attractiveness of infochemicals in a tritrophic context is expected to be determined by the degree of specialization of the parasitoid and its host(s). Microctonus hyperodae Loan (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) is an oligophagous parasitoid that attacks adult Curculionidae of the Brachycerinae subfamily, especially Listronotus bonariensis Kuschel, on Gramineae. In 1996, a new host–parasitoid association between the carrot weevil Listronotus oregonensis LeConte and M. hyperodae was created in the laboratory. In this study, the infochemicals used by M. hyperodae when searching for its adult weevil hosts were determined using a Y‐shaped olfactometer. Three curculionid species (L. oregonensis, Listronotus sparsus Say, and Neydus flavicaudis Boheman) and one bruchid species [Callosobruchus maculatus (Fabricius)], and their feces, were tested. It was expected that hosts phylogenetically and ecologically close to L. bonariensis would be more attractive than species less related but in fact, M. hyperodae responded only to L. oregonensis and its feces. When feces and host insects were tested separately, M. hyperodae responded to the odors emitted by L. oregonensis adults but not to their feces, suggesting that most of the kairomones came from the host itself. Host plants were also tested, but M. hyperodae responded neither to Lolium multiflorum Lamark (Gramineae) nor to Daucus carota L. (Umbelliferae) leaves.  相似文献

Aim  To investigate biogeographical patterns of cleptoparasitic Exaerete bee species and their orchid bee hosts.
Location  Neotropical region, from Central America to southern Brazil.
Methods  Correlations between relative frequencies of cleptoparasitic Exaerete species and their host Eulaema species were employed to investigate the geographical association between such species pairs.
Results  Our data support the current proposition that the Eulaema meriana / Eulaema flavescens complex is the main host for Exaerete frontalis . Contrary to current belief, however, Eulaema nigrita apparently is not the only and, in some regions, not the most important host for Exaerete smaragdina .
Main conclusions  Current knowledge on cleptoparasite host associations among orchid bees is based on fortuitous observations, and in some instances generalizations from such observations are not corroborated by the frequencies and distributions of the bees involved. Our data suggest that cleptoparasitic pressure, rather than other features of the forest environment, may be responsible for the low abundance of E. nigrita in the Amazonian forests.  相似文献

Understanding the life-history complex of eusociality has remained an enduring problem in evolutionary ecology, partially because natural selection models have considered traits in relative isolation. I aim for a more inclusive model that uses ecological interactions to predict the evolutionary existence of sexual reproduction, sexual reproduction asymmetry, and sex ratios in eusocial species. Using a two-level selection process, with within-population selection on the sex ratio of the sexual caste and between-population selection on the worker sex ratio and the degree of sexual reproduction asymmetry, it is found that a male-haploid genome and a worker caste of pure females is the evolutionary optimum of most initial conditions when, like in eusocial hymenoptera, there is no pair bond between the sexual male and female. That a diploid genome and a worker caste with both males and females is the evolutionary optimum of most initial conditions when, like in eusocial termites, there is a pair bond. That sex-linked genomes may evolve in diploid eusocials, and that the model will not generally maintain sexual reproduction by itself. These results hold for ploidy-levels that behave as quantitative or discrete traits, over a relatively wide range of the relative investment in a sexual male versus sexual female, and for partial sexual systems where the genomic portion with diploid inheritance is either fixed or random.  相似文献

For ectothermic species, temperature is a key environmental factor influencing several aspects of their physiology and ecology, acting particularly on reproduction. To measure the consequences of a severe thermal stress during development on male reproduction, a cold shock (1h at -18 degrees C) was tested on Dinarmus basalis pupae. D. basalis (Hymenoptera: Pteromalidae) is a parasitoid wasp in which sperm management in both male and female is of prime importance. After a cold shock, developmental success was reduced, with a quarter of cold-shocked males not emerging correctly. The stress effects were estimated at the level of sperm stock in seminal vesicles of males at different ages and on the ability of 2-day-old males to access females in single and multiple mating and in male-male competition. Cold-shocked males had a reduced sperm stock compared to control males and this difference persisted with age. The rate of sperm production was similar in both groups. The consequences of a cold shock on male reproductive ability were perceptible in multiple mating and male-male competition but not in single mating. Cold-shocked males were at a disadvantage, inseminating fewer females and copulating less frequently. Finally, male pupae of D. basalis were able to withstand severe temperature stresses and their reproductive functions were partially preserved.  相似文献

(1) Male western cicada killers (Sphecius grandis) had elevated, apparently regulated, thorax temperatures during territorial patrolling. (2) Abdomen temperature increased steeply with increasing ambient temperature, approaching thorax temperature when ambient temperature exceeded 35 °C. (3) Both indirect evidence and heating experiments demonstrated the apparent ability to shunt heat from thorax to abdomen. (4) Dead, dry wasps reached lethal temperatures when placed in full sunlight on the bare ground, and substantially lower temperatures on plants. (5) The percentage of males perching was extremely low, occurring primarily during early morning hours. Most perching occurred on plants, and very little on the ground. (6) In contrast to what has been reported for eastern cicada killers (Sphecius speciosus), S. grandis males did not appear to use sophisticated behaviors to regulate body temperature during territorial defense, relying primarily on physiological mechanisms. (7) This strategy may be more appropriate for S. grandis in the hotter, drier environment of the lowland Chihuahuan desert.  相似文献

Ants use cuticular hydrocarbons (CHC-profiles) as multicomponent recognition cues to identify colony members (nestmates). Recognition cues (label) are thought to be perceived during ant–ant encounters and compared to a neuronal template that represents the colony label. Over time, the CHC-profile may change, and the template is adjusted accordingly. A phenotype mismatch between label and template, as happens with CHC-profiles of foreign workers (non-nestmates), frequently leads to aggressive behavior. We investigated the template reformation in workers of the carpenter ant Camponotus floridanus by masking their antennae with postpharyngeal gland (PPG) extracts from nestmates or non-nestmates. The behavioral response of manipulated workers encountering unmanipulated workers was measured independently after 2 and after 15 h. After 2 h of incubation, workers treated with either of the two PPG-extracts showed low aggression towards nestmates and high aggression towards non-nestmates. In contrast, after 15 h of incubation, workers treated with non-nestmate PPG-extract showed low aggression towards both nestmates and non-nestmates. The slow (>2 h) adjustment of the template indicates a reformation localized in the central nervous system rather than in chemosensory neurons. In addition, our data show that template adjustment to a new CHC-profile does not impair the assessment of the old CHC-profile as nestmate label.  相似文献
