Synopsis A study was designed to test whether habitat association affects the movement patterns and habitat preferences of copper, quillback, and brown rockfishes. Resighting of tagged rockfishes (512 tagged rockfishes and 726 resightings) from July 1986 through June 1988 indicated that home ranges, movements from reefs, and tendency to return from experimental displacement (up to 8.0 km) were significantly different on the three habitat types compared. On high relief rocky reefs, rockfishes maintained small home ranges (most within 30 m2) and displayed strong reef fidelity that was not affected by season; no off-reef movement was detected and rockfishes generally returned from displacements. On artificial reefs, rockfishes also maintained small home ranges (most within 30 m2), however, there were pronounced seasonal habitat preferences. In the summer, artificial reefs become less suitable; considerable off-reef movement occurred and rockfish did not return from displacements. In contrast, during fall and winter, rockfishes remained on artificial reefs and returned from displacements. On low relief rocky reefs, rockfishes maintained considerably larger home ranges (most within 400 m2 and some up to 1500 m2) and habitat use was strongly affected by season; rockfishes only inhabited low relief reefs in the summer and only returned from displacements in the summer coincident when peak algal cover. In addition, there was substantial movement between artificial reefs and adjacent low relief reefs; many rockfishes leave artificial reefs in the summer, move to low relief reefs, and return to artificial reefs in the fall when kelp disappears on low relief reefs. Through habitat assessment, movement in response to habitat quality, and ability to home, these rockfish maintain a flexible behavior for optimal habitat use.  相似文献

Mesenchymal stromal cells(MSCs) are currently being investigated for use in a wide variety of clinical applications. For most of these applications, systemic delivery of the cells is preferred. However, this requires the homing and migration of MSCs to a target tissue. Although MSC hominghas been described, this process does not appear to be highly efficacious because only a few cells reach the target tissue and remain there after systemic administration. This has been ascribed to low expression levels of homing molecules, the loss of expression of such molecules during expansion, and the heterogeneity of MSCs in cultures and MSC culture protocols. To overcome these limitations, different methods to improve the homing capacity of MSCs have been examined. Here, we review the current understanding of MSC homing, with a particular focus on homing to bone marrow. In addition, we summarize the strategies that have been developed to improve this process. A better understanding of MSC biology, MSC migration and homing mechanisms will allow us to prepare MSCs with optimal homing capacities. The efficacy of therapeutic applications is dependent on efficient delivery of the cells and can, therefore, only benefit from better insights into the homing mechanisms.  相似文献

Orientation toward breeding ponds plays an important role in the seasonal movements of amphibians. In this study, adult marbled newts were tested in a circular arena to determine sensory cues used to locate breeding ponds. Animals were collected from a temporary pond situated in northern Spain, taken to the experimental site 340 m distant, and tested for orientation under a variety of conditions (i.e., orientation under a clear night sky, orientation under an overcast night sky, and orientation under a clear night sky in the presence of an altered geomagnetic field). These investigations have demonstrated that the marbled newt is able to orient using celestial cues. Animals chose a compass course in the direction of their breeding pond only when celestial cues were available. Conversely, the ambient geomagnetic field does not seem to be relevant to orientation of marbled newts since they were unable to orient themselves using the ambient geomagnetic field in the absence of celestial cues. Generation of a vascular network is a hallmark of solid tumor growth, and attempts to switch off the tumor angiogenic phenotype are promising. However, this angiogenic potential might also be exploited to obtain incorporation into tumor vessels of genetically modified third-party cells, which could behave as targets of immunologic or pharmacologic attack. With this in mind, we addressed the efficiency and selectivity of third-party cell recruitment into experimental tumors generated in severe combined immunodeficiency mice. The animals were inoculated intraperitoneally with human ovarian carcinoma cell lines and with beta-galactosidase (beta-gal)-transduced human umbilical vein endothelial cell (HUVEC) or human fibroblasts. Transgenic HUVEC were scattered in tumors, but not in normal mouse tissues; immunohistochemical analysis revealed their selective homing to tumor vascular structures, over 50% of which contained beta-gal(+) cells. Injection of beta-gal-transduced human fibroblasts was also associated with transgenic cell incorporation into tumor masses; however, beta-gal(+) fibroblasts did not home to tumor blood vessels and were only localized within the tumor stroma. These findings show that the recruitment of primary third-party cells into the different compartments of experimentally induced tumors is an efficient and selective phenomenon and indicate possible alternative ways of confronting the tumor angiogenic potential in cancer therapy.  相似文献

The mathematically exact solution for navigating with respect to two non-orthogonal gradient fields requires taking both fields into account conjointly. Such a complex solution may be beyond the brain capability of most animals. Animals may use an approximate, simpler solution by considering each field separately (i.e., the angle between the two gradient directions is ignored). This generates directional biases that may prove useful in determining the nature of the fields actually involved in bicoordinate navigation.  相似文献

An intein is a polypeptide that interrupts the functional domains of a protein, called the exteins. The intein can facilitate its own excision from the exteins, concomitant with the ligation of the exteins, in a process called protein splicing. The alpha subunit of the ribonucleotide reductase of the extreme thermophile Pyrococcus abyssi is interrupted by three inteins in separate insertion sites. Each intein can facilitate protein splicing when over-expressed in Escherichia coli, with affinity domains serving as the exteins. The influence of the N-terminal flanking residue on the efficiency of splicing is specific to each intein. Each intein has a different downstream nucleophilic residue, and cannot tolerate substitution to a residue of lesser or equal nucleophilicity. We examined the effects of river environment on the timing of spawning migrations by anadromous Pacific lamprey, Lampetra tridentata, in the Columbia River (U.S.A.). In a 41-year time series of adult lamprey counts, migration timing was earliest in warm, low-discharge years and latest in cold, high-flow years. Threshold temperatures associated with run timing were similar throughout the dataset despite significant impoundment-related warming, suggesting that temperature-dependent migration cues have been temporally stable. Within each year, migration rates of PIT-tagged lampreys were positively correlated with temperature and negatively correlated with discharge through multiple river reaches, offering additional evidence for environmental control of upstream movement. Both visual count and PIT-tag data indicated that there may be population-based differences in migration timing within the aggregate Columbia River lamprey run. These life history and behavioral results have potentially far-reaching implications for management of lamprey species.  相似文献

Four green turtle females were tracked by satellite during their post-reproductive migration in the South China Sea. Three of them reached their feeding grounds 923–1551 km distant. During nesting activity, a female was displaced twice, and her return trips to the nesting beach from 11 and 284 km were tracked by a direction-recording data-logger and by satellite, respectively. Part of the journeys occurred coastwise, indicating that leading geographical features had been utilised. The straightness of the turtles' tracks in open seas, both over shallow and deep waters, and their ability to pinpoint distant targets and home after displacement off their usual routes, provides circumstantial evidence for a true navigation mechanism.Abbreviation PTT platform transmitter terminal  相似文献
