In order to determine the suitability of ants as indicator organisms for habitat disruption in tropical forests, we studied the effects of both high and low impact logging on ant communities in northeastern Pará State, in the Brazilian Amazon. We collected ants from logged forests and unlogged forest sites with Winkler bags throughout the 1998 rainy season (January and April) and the following dry season (July and September). Both methods of timber harvesting showed impacts on ant community composition when compared with unlogged forest, although these impacts did not include modifications in total species richness or the relative contribution of each ant subfamily to the total number of species. Instead, logging induced alterations took place at the level of species and genera. A 2-fold reduction in the dominance of ants of the highly diverse genus Pheidole was associated with forest alterations in high-impact logging sites. Thus, logging in Amazonia can be seen to promote species shifts in ant communities, without, however, altering species richness. Ants of the genus Pheidole are potentially useful indicators for forest disturbances resulting from timber extraction. 相似文献

The composition of semi-aquatic bug communities from eight permanent ponds from southern Transylvania was investigated between 2001 and 2004. Three of the ponds were sampled repeatedly throughout the active period of the year, while the other five were sampled only once. Microvelia reticulata (Burmeister, 1835) and Gerris argentatus Schummel, 1832 were the dominant species from the thoroughly investigated habitats. Statistical analysis proved that each of the sampled species has specific habitat preferences in relation to the modifications of the hydrological regime of the ponds (reflected by the modifications of open water areas, station sizes, and percentages of vegetation coverage). The results, obtained from the three habitats investigated throughout the active period, were confirmed by the samples taken from the other five habitats opening the discussion about the use of semi-aquatic bug communities as bioindicators of the hydrological regime for permanent ponds. 相似文献

The Cimicomorpha is one of the largest and highly diversified infraorders of the Heteroptera. This group is also highly diversified cytogenetically and demonstrates a number of unusual cytogenetic characters such as holokinetic chromosomes; m-chromosomes; multiple sex chromosome systems; post-reduction of sex chromosomes in meiosis; variation in the presence/absence of chiasmata in spermatogenesis; different types of achiasmate meiosis. 1. Benthic macroinvertebrate communities were sampled in 30 tributary streams at altitudes from sea level to about 3000 m draining three geologically distinct regions within the catchment of the Sepik River, Papua New Guinea. The fauna of this near‐pristine river has been little studied, and the impacts of ongoing and anticipated human impacts on the Sepik are uncertain. 2. Data on community composition were analysed at different levels of taxonomic resolution (species or morphospecies versus family) to compare their responses to environmental variables such as altitude and geology (reflected in water chemistry), and to indicate their potential utility for the detection of environmental change. 3. A total of 183 000 macroinvertebrates representing 250 species were collected, predominantly insects (232 species and >99% of individuals). The fauna was co‐dominated by Diptera (42% of individuals; 32 morphospecies, mainly Orthocladiinae, Simuliidae and Chironominae) and Ephemeroptera (36%; 48 species), although the Trichoptera showed the highest species (67) and family (13) richness, with Coleoptera ranked third (43 species). Naucoridae (Heteroptera) and Crambidae: Acentropinae (Lepidoptera), each represented by 13 species, were distinctive faunal elements. Mayflies were represented by only four families, one consisting of a single species. 4. Multivariate analysis of the species‐level data set revealed that community composition was influenced by geological region, but the effect was largely due to altitude as most streams in one region (the Central Highlands) were at higher elevations (>800 m) than streams in the other two regions (<500 m). However, altitude had no direct effect on species richness. A secondary influence of current speed and a subsidiary effect of water chemistry (pH and N‐NO3) on community composition were also detected. Naucorid bugs showed evidence of altitudinal zonation and some species replacement, plus a tendency for certain genera to be associated with highland or lowland streams. 5. Analysis of the family‐level data set failed to uncover strong effects of any environmental variable, either individually or in combination, although some sensitivity to altitude plus slope was detected. 6. These findings suggest that attempts to use macroinvertebrates to detect environmental change in New Guinea streams will require species‐level monitoring of community composition. 相似文献

Current evidence suggests that sexual size dimorphism (SSD) reflects the male and female adaptation to their different reproductive roles. Belostoma and Lethocerus species, included in Belostomatidae, present different kinds of paternal care. Females of Belostoma Latreille species lay their eggs on the back of males. Males carry, aerate and protect the clutch until hatching, which is critical for offspring survival. Males of Lethocerus Mayr species exhibit some parental care behavior but do not carry the eggs. The genera are nearly related. We studied and compared the SSD patterns of B. oxyurum (Dufour), B. micantulum (Stål), B. elegans (Mayr), B. bifoveolatum Spinola, B. gestroi Montandon and Lethocerus annulipes (Herrich‐Schäffer) by means of a multivariate approach to distinguish selection targets in different components of size. Morphometric analysis revealed that SSD patterns vary among traits and that the arrangements are similar in Belostoma species, showing a common trend under resembling selective mechanisms. The widespread SSD trend in insects is that all components of body size are biased towards females, generally related to a fecundity advantage, a pattern now also detected in L. annulipes. We found in Belostoma species that the male has relatively longer middle and hind legs. We propose that SSD in hind legs biased towards males is a selective response for paternal care; they denote a brood‐adapted morphology. Two chemical compounds eliciting prey-locating behavior of the predatory stink bug, Eocanthecona furcellata, were isolated from solvent extracts of Spodoptera litura larvae and identified. A hexane eluted fraction from silica gel chromatography of the solvent extracts of S. litura larvae was attractive to E. furcellata nymphs when assayed with a linear track olfactometer. The hexane fraction was found to contain n-pentadecane (2500 ng/larva), n-tetracosane (54 ng/larva), n-heptadecane (41 ng/larva), n-heptacosane (61 ng/larva), n-nonacosane (147 ng/larva), n-hentriacontane (200 ng/larva) and squalene (323 ng/larva). The synthetic n-pentadecane was attractive to the bugs, although its activity was slightly lower than that of the hexane fraction. A mixture of synthetic n-pentadecane and the other six hydrocarbons was also attractive, although no improved attractiveness was observed by the addition of the latter compounds. On the other hand, a 15%-ether-in- hexane eluted fraction from silica gel chromatography stimulated bugs to display a proboscis-protruding behavior. A neutral-layer fraction of the 15% fraction, which contained E-phytol (480 ng/larva), also elicited this behavior. The predaceous bug,Macrolophus caliginosus Wagner (Heteroptera: Miridae) is a biological control agent used in greenhouses in the French Mediterranean region. The egg of this mirid is embedded in plant tissues and all embryonic development occurs in this environment. In order to define an artificial substrate for egg-laying, exchanges of chemical substances between the egg and the host plant were investigated by morphological and biochemical analyses. Egg wet weight doubled throughout embryonic development, while egg dry weight did not vary. The amino acid content of the egg remained stable during embryogenesis. Only aspartic acid, serine and alanine decreased during the first five days of development. It can be concluded that exchanges mainly involved uptake of water by the egg. 相似文献
