Genetic parameters of size through sexual maturity have been relatively unexplored for Pacific salmon. In this study, individually tagged coho salmon were raised in freshwater, and the heritabilities of size and growth rate were estimated at several intervals between 13 and 24 months of age (spawning). Heritability estimates for size were moderate to high from 13 to 19 months of age, ranging from 0.36 to 0.50, and lower from 21 months to spawning at 24 months, ranging from 0.17 to 0.32. Heritabilities of specific growth rates estimated over 3-month intervals were moderate from 16 to 21 months of age, ranging from 0.21 to 0.34. Genetic and phenotypic correlations between sizes measured at different ages were moderate to high, ranging from about 0.7 to 1.0. Correlations between growth rate and size indicated that the larger fish were the fastest growing between 16 and 19 months of age and were slower growing between 19 and 21 months of age. 相似文献

Spatial variation in infection by digenetic trematodes in a population of freshwater snails (Potamopyrgus antipodarum) 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Larval digenetic trematodes commonly castrate their first intermediate hosts, and should therefore impose strong selection on the timing and mode of host reproduction. Here we examine spatial variation in infection by trematodes in the freshwater snail Potamopyrgus antipodarum. Snails were collected at 11 different sites at Lake Alexandrina on the South Island of New Zealand from transects that ran perpendicular to the shore and across several different habitat types (from 0 to 8 m deep). Logistic regression was used to analyze the relationships between the frequency of trematode infection and snail size, habitat type, and transect location. On average, the probability of infection increased 3.3 times with each 1 mm increase in shell length. Prevalence of infection by the most common species of trematode, Microphallus sp., was highest in the shallow-water habitats where its final hosts (waterflow) spend most of their time. Prevalence of infection by another parasite, Telogaster ophistorchis (final host: eels) increased with depth, but because Microphallus was much more common, total infection by all trematodes decreased with depth. The effects of transect location were minor for Telogaster, but there was significant variation in Microphallus prevalence among transects, especially in the shore-bank habitat. Taken together, these results suggest that the risk of infection is spatially variable, but generally higher in shallow-water habitats, which may explain the greater frequency of sexual individuals as well as earlier reproduction among individuals near shore. 相似文献

The effects of inorganic mercury (HgII) and methylmercury (MeHg) on the colonization of artificial substrates by periphytic
diatoms were studied using indoor freshwater microcosms. These consisted of a mixed biotope– water column + natural sediment
– with rooted macrophyte cuttings (Elodea densa) and benthic bivalve molluscs (Corbicula fluminea).The periphyton was collected
on glass slides in the water column after 34and 71 days. The two Hg sources were introduced either by daily additions to the
water column, or once at the beginning into the sediment, using two nominal concentrations: water column, 0.5 μgL-1 and 2 μg L-1 for both compounds: sediment, 0.5 mg kg-1 (fw) and 2 mgkg-1 (fw) for MeHg and 1 mg kg-1 (fw) and 10 mgkg-1 (fw) for HgII. Several complementary criteria were used to analyse the structural and functional perturbations induced: cell
density, species richness, diatom size, relative abundance. Exposure to MeHg added to the water column resulted in reduced
cell density and changes in species composition with enhancement of e.g. Fallacia pygmaea or Nitzschia palea; inorganic Hg
had less effect on the population structure. After contamination via the sediment, the effects of the two compounds were less
pronounced than for the water source.

Big Muskellunge Lake, a softwater lake (pH 7.5–8.0, alkalinity 0.36 meq/L) in northern Wisconsin, harbors a diverse (25 species) submersed macrophyte vegetation. The present submersed flora combines species generally thought distinct in their ecological affinities, and is very similar to that reported in 1935. The only differences are the apparent loss of three previously infrequent Potamogeton species, and the addition to the flora of two infrequent Potamogeton species and the now abundant Elodea canadensis. Dramatic differences in composition and pattern of the vegetation occurred between sites of contrasting exposure and sediment type. Substantial compositional variation, at scales ranging from tens of centimeters to tens of meters, occurred along transects of contiguous quadrats at uniform depth and exposure. Analyses of species sequences along line transects detected significant segregation of species that is most plausibly explained by biotic factors such as colonization, clonal growth, and competition. Heterogeneity at small scales of a few meters or less is common in Big Muskellunge Lake. Such pattern has been neglected in macrophyte ecology, in spite of its significance for neighbor relationships which may critically influence growth and reproduction of aquatic plants. 相似文献

Fecundity of four species of catfishes, namely, Mystus seenghala (Sykes), Mystus cavasius (Ham), Wallagonia attu (Bloch) and Heteropneustes fossilis (Bloch), was studied. The fecundity of Mystus seenghala and Mystus cavasius varied between 20064 to 46443 and 3314 to 63135 respectively. In Wallagonia attu and Heteropneustes fossilis it varied between 66070 to 453148 and 1375 to 46737 respectively. In all the four species fecundity has a linear relationship
with body weight and gonad weight, and a parabolic relationship with length in all the fishes excepting Mystus seenghala, where it is linear. By subjecting the data to multiple regression analysis, it is observed that the fecundity of each species
can be most accurately determined by taking two variables together. In all the fishes studied the relative fecundity (Egg/body

Synopsis The timing of ovarian maturation and spawning of 17 warmwater fish species in Lake Oahe (South and North Dakota) was estimated from changes in the mean ovary indices (ratios of ovary weight to fish length). The onset of vitellogenesis varied within species (up to 2 months). Maturation of the ova took from 7.5 to 10 months, depending on species. Annual variations in the mean date of peak spawning of individual species during 1964–1971 were usually less than a week. There was little overlap of the annual mean peak spawning dates of the 17 species, and an established sequence of spawning among species was shown. A relatively high incidence of atresia in the shovelnose sturgeon, northern pike, and carp indicated that these species had apparently not yet adapted to the altered and variable spawning conditions in this reservoir. Regularity of spawning would seem to provide the best chance for spawning success in variable environments such as Lake Oahe. 相似文献

Synopsis The Río Bayano in eastern Panama is one of many tropical rivers in which bull sharks (Carcharhinus leucas) and largetooth sawfish (Pristis perotteti) have been known to occur. Since both species can osmoregulate in fresh water throughout life, theoretically, both could survive in landlocked situations for many years.P. perotteti reproduces in fresh water, butC. leucas ordinarily does not, so only the former would appear to have the potential for establishing a breeding stock in such a landlocked freshwater body.The damming of the Rio Bayano and the creation of a large impoundment in 1976 provides a test of the ability of members of both species trapped there to survive and to establish breeding stocks. In 1980 and 1981 three mature femaleC. leucas were found dead in Lake Bayano and three sub-adult femaleP. perotteti were taken by trammel net. Growing evidence demonstrates that fluctuating metal stressors can have profound impact on the ecophysiological responses in aquatic species. However, how environmental stochasticity affects the complex damage-recovery dynamics in organisms remains difficult to predict. The objective of this paper was to investigate the stochastic behavior in the damage-recovery dynamics in tilapia in response to pulse waterborne copper (Cu). We developed a mathematical framework that allows discrimination between damage and recovery processes in tilapia exposed to designed pulse Cu scenarios. We built deterministic nonlinear models for the damage-recovery dynamics that produce response surfaces describing killing/recovery rate–Cu-pulse interval interactions. Here we showed that the stochastic switching behavior arose from competition among killing, recovery rates, and Cu pulse frequency. This competition resulted in an ultrasensitivity appeared in whole body, gills, muscle, liver, and kidney with Hill coefficients of ≥7, 4, 7, 5, and 5, respectively, at Cu 3 mg L−1, dilution rate 0.05 h−1, and pulse interval 72 h, indicating that a stochastic switch-like response was generated. We argue that the role of gill-associated Hill coefficient as a direct signal of the stochastic switch-like response in the damage-recovery dynamics in response to pulse metal stressor can serve as a sensitive indicator for risk detection in fluctuating environments. Our approach constitutes a general method to identify the stochastic switch-like response for aquatic species exposed to fluctuating metal stressors, which may help to predict and, eventually, expand our understanding of the damage-recovery dynamics. Finally, we implicate that Hill coefficient-based switch-like signal and its damage with hazard response can be linked in an information theoretic framework to handle environmental stochasticity. 相似文献
